The Blues even the Stanley Cup Final at a game apiece. Check out the game recap and other notable news in today’s NHL morning coffee headlines.

NHL.COM: Carl Gunnarsson’s overtime goal on a delayed penalty gave the St. Louis Blues a 3-2 victory over the Boston Bruins in Game 2 of the 2019 Stanley Cup Final. It’s the first win in the Cup Final for the Blues in franchise history and ties this series at a game apiece.

Gunnarsson had an opportunity to win the game in the third period but his shot clanged off the goalpost. Running into head coach Craig Berube in the bathroom before overtime, he told his bench boss he needed just one more chance to score.

The Bruins played most of this game without defenseman Matt Grzelcyk. He left the game in the first period after being boarded by Blues winger Oskar Sundqvist in the first period.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Game 2 saw a better effort from the Blues. They out-played and out-hit their opponent in this contest. Grzelcyk’s absence left the Bruins short a defenseman for most of Game 2 and that took on a toll on their blueline as the game went on.

The Bruins’ top line struggled in Game 2, prompting speculation Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand could be nursing injuries. Game 3 of this series goes Saturday night in St. Louis.

OTTAWA SUN: The Senators re-signed backup goaltender Anders Nilsson to a two-year contract extension worth $2.6-million per season.

NBC SPORTS: The San Jose Sharks are welcoming back Bob Boughner as an assistant coach. Boughner was previously on their coaching staff from 2015 to 2017 before becoming head coach of the Florida Panthers for two seasons. In April, the Panthers relieved him of his duties.

LOS ANGELES DAILY NEWS: The Anaheim Ducks are looking at three potential candidates for their vacant head-coaching position. “Dallas Stars assistant coaches Rick Bowness and Todd Nelson and New York Islanders assistant Lane Lambert are set to be interviewed for the job.”

NHL.COM: John Madden is stepping down as head coach of the Cleveland Monsters, the AHL affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

SUN-SENTINEL.COM: The Florida Panthers have inked a three-year broadcasting contract extension with 560 WQAM Sports Radio.

SPORTSNET: has the complete list of the 108 players attending the NHL Scouting Combine in Buffalo, NY this week.

  1. Go Gunnarson – Go Steen – Go Bozak … GO BLUES!

      • Anywhere but Toronto! 🙂 they been there – this is the closest they’ve ever been to the Cup

  2. Thank you! I was afraid of the broom on this one…
They gotta beat Boston. Hit the top line harder and maybe those injuries will come to light…

  3. Great game by the Blues, the Bruins top two lines need to play much better. Interesting the Bergeron wasn’t taking the draws in his own zone with less then a minute to play in regulation. 4 forwards had more ice time then Bergeron last night. This isn’t good.

    • Bergeron was very quiet. Two days off to help.

The media is missing the story of comparing Bergeron and ROR. Very similar players.

      • They are two of the best at what they do and the fact they can shut each other down, isn’t exciting as putting the puck in the net; therefore you don’t hear the talking heads commenting on it.

  4. Sundqvist’s hit did not warrant a suspension. The turn as the guy got hit made his head hit the boards…

Weird time in the league… Love the Krug hit but he really did skate half up the ice to deliver it. So open ice charging that does not result in a hit to the head is ok?
I have no idea what is a penalty or accepted any longer

    • Toronto and Ottawa , 4 playoff series.
      Toronto 4 wins
      Ottawa 0 wins
      Toronto won 16 games
      Ottawa won 8 games
      0 cups in 27 years
      Ottawa no cup since 1927
What do you think Google George

      • George must be having his afternoon nap. I wonder what he will call me today. I’m kinda excited I bought a dictionary to look up the words. Strange book no pictures.

  5. Sundqvist will be suspended at least one game maybe two there is no place in the game for drilling a guys head through the glass. He should be gone as long as Griz. Bruins need to play better but winning 8 of last nine not to bad. Time for Boston to start running the blues goalie a little payback never hurts.

    • True that Obe

  6. Looks like George has realized defeat. This feels good.
