An update on Connor McDavid, Jesse Puljujarvi signs with Finnish club, Mikko Rantanen trains with Norwegian team, Senators talk contract with Thomas Chabot, and much more in today’s NHL morning coffee headlines.

TSN: Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid said his recovery from a late-season knee injury is progressing well. “Just working hard to get to camp and focus on that. [This off-season] has been different, just focusing on that [rehab]. It’s taking a lot of time, but it’s been good.”

McDavid also said he recently had dinner with new Oilers coach Dave Tippett and claimed his initial reaction was excitement over the club hiring Ken Holland as general manager. However, he was disappointed to see his friend, Milan Lucic, traded to Calgary for James Neal.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: Speaking of Holland, he’s unconcerned over McDavid’s decision not to skate in this summer’s BioSteel camp. “McDavid is skating every day since early August with his rehab people,” he said. “I think he wants to stick to his rehab protocol.” Holland also indicated his captain’s recovery is progressing well.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: With training camp opening in just over two weeks, we’ll find out soon enough how long it’ll take McDavid to participate in training camp and get up to full speed for the season. The Oilers need him at his best to have a realistic shot at reaching the playoffs.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: cites a report out of Finland indicating Oilers winger Jesse Puljujarvi has signed a one-year contract with Finnish club Karpat Oulu. “The agreement includes an option for Puljujärvi to qualify for the NHL until December 1.” A restricted free agent lacking arbitration rights, Puljujarvi has requested a trade after struggling to reach expectations with the Oilers.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Oilers could still shopo Puljujarvi but his low trade value right now means they won’t get anything worthwhile in return. Puljujarvi could also return to the Oilers before Dec. 1 but I think he’ll be spending this season in Finland. Holland won’t be pressured into trading him and seems content to let the struggling winger try to regain his form in his home country.

THE SCORE: Colorado Avalanche winger Mikko Rantanen “is skating with the Storhamar Dragons in Norway as he awaits a new NHL contract, the Norwegian team confirmed Monday.”

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Unlike Puljujarvi’s situation in Edmonton, Rantanen isn’t demanding a trade or threatening to play the entire season overseas. This looks more like an insurance option for the young winger in case his contract talks drag into the start of training camp. The Avs remain hopeful of getting Rantanen under contract before then.

OTTAWA SUN: The Senators are working on a contract extension with Thomas Chabot. GM Pierre Dorion remains tightlipped over the status of the talks, though they’re ongoing and believed to be going well. The 22-year-old defenseman is in the final season of his entry-level contract.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Looks like the Sens want to lock up Chabot to a long-term deal. Cap Friendly indicates they have over $33 million invested in just nine players for 2020-21, giving them plenty of cap space to ink the blueliner to a hefty raise.

PHILLY.COM: Flyers RFAs Ivan Provorov and Travis Konecny remain unsigned but GM Chuck Fletcher expects contract discussions to heat up as training camp approaches next month. Fletcher’s open to either a bridge deal or a long-term contract for one or both players.

The Flyers GM also said center Tyler Pitlick underwent surgery last week to repair a tendon in his left wrist. It’s hoped Pitlick will be ready for the start of the Flyers’ regular-season schedule on Oct. 4.

WINNIPEG SUN: The Jets signed forward Gabriel Bourque to a “one-year, two-way deal worth an annual average value of $700,000 in the NHL.”

THE SCORE: The Florida Panthers signed forward Denis Malgin to a one-year contract. Cap Friendly indicates it’s a one-way deal worth $750K.

NEWSOBSERVER.COM: Carolina Hurricanes prospect Stelio Mattheos “is completing treatments for testicular cancer, the team said Monday, and will not participate in the Canes’ 2019 training camp.”

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Here’s hoping Mattheos makes a full recovery and resumes his playing career soon.

The Iowa Wild signed NHL veteran Cody McLeod to an AHL contract.

THE ATHLETIC’s Sean Shapiro reports Scottie Upshall will attend Dallas Stars training camp on a professional tryout offer.

TSN: Former NHL enforcer Donald Brashear will appear in a Quebec City courtroom on Sept.4 facing a charge of cocaine possession. He was arrested on June 5 “after allegedly breaking an apartment window and was found to have the drug in his possession.”

STLTODAY.COM: The Blues and the NHL unveiled the logo for the 2020 NHL All-Star Game.

  1. Yesterday I compiled a list of unsigned RFAs who were probably not seen as essential to their team’s expectations and who could be allowed to sit long-term if demands exceed perceived value to the team.

IF – and I stress IF because no one knows one way or another – Malgin was one such who thought he could get a substantial raise, he came back down to Earth in a hurry, finally signing for 1 year at $750,000 – $60,000 over what he made last season.

I wonder how many more from that list will now follow suit as training camp nears?

    • Hi George

I would think a handful are going to sign in that League min ($700 K) —- $775 K range

  2. Thomas Chabot should get at least what Erik Karlsson is receiving .
Chabot will have more points and play more games than Karlsson . We can’t use stats or history to justify Karlsson getting more. The experts on this site said the stats can be manipulated to prove what ever you want.
So Dorion said on the eighth God created Karlsson.
Ottawa has stated they did not miss Karlsson because they have Chabot.
Chabot is younger and going to produce more than Karlsson in the next 8 years.
Chabot would be a fool to sign for less than what Karlsson got.

    • You’re act is wearing thin Vinnie.
Keep it fun at least, the latest from you has been weak sauce.
See if you can get BBB fired up about the Habs or something.
George is like that big trout who’s been caught and released a few times.
He’s not inclined to bite on poor quality bait any longer, as he’s learned his lesson. So might as well let him swim or try another lure.
If you absolutely need to muddy the water, please know,
      I’m here for you.

  3. To be quite honest I’m being serious. Everyone goes on and on about Marner being worth 11.5 million, why wouldn’t Chabot be worth the same.
Just trying to play within the parameters set forth from previous posts.
I used stats to show if Colin White was worth 5 million Nylander was worth 7 million.
I was told stats could be twisted to prove what a person wanted.
I actually think George as multiple alias on this site and is actually posting to himself.
Don’t know whether you noticed or not but Lyle mentioned Chabot and I responded.
It’s cute , but let George look after himself.
Prince Charming and Sleeping Beauty is a fairy Tale
If Lyle wants he could stop me posting, it wouldn’t offend me

    • Please don’t stop posting.
      You’re a knowledgeable guy.
It just looks like you’re off with regards to George.

Marner may not get 11.5 and break the bank, but Dubas has a history of paying once strong armed into it.
Why should Marner be paid less when he has actually shown to be able to produce?
      Matthews and Nylander haven’t imo.
If Matthews could stay healthy he could earn his, but I’m not so sure about young Nylander.

    • George doesn’t have multiple alias, Vinnie. Stick to talking hockey and stop lobbing baseless accusations at other posters.

  4. Lyle , maybe you’re George.
If they are baseless accusations don’t let me post.
I live 50 minutes from Ottawa’s rink live in the area, probably know more about what is happening in the area than most.
Ottawa fans complain about the oppositions fans out numbering them at their home rink as they watch it on TV.

  5. And here I always thought George was a Habs fan (of the Old Guard), living in Ottawa.
Kinda like Ray with the Bruins/Oilers and Caper with the Bruins/Jets among a host of other displaced fans.
    Stick to Hockey Vinster.
You’re not bad in that area.

  6. I’m George!

    • No, George is intelligent

    • I’m George, and so is my wife!

      • Man. What move was that from?

      • Monty Python’s Life of Brian.

  7. Nylander and Pasta were drafted same year same round Pasta has almost 3 times as many goals and almost twice the points. Pasta makes 6.6 Nylander should have been signed for about 4.5 not 6.9 but like I’ve said before I’m glad scuba kid pays his young players all the money makes it impossible to win. Marner should be signed for similar money as Aho not McDavid money. Just my opinion and I also think McAvoy shouldn’t get more than 7. Three years at 6 eight years at 7 or close to it.

    • I believe the discussion started over Thomas Chabot.
      Think that was last week

  8. Shoreorrpark says my act is wearing thin. Seems as how I value his opinion, this is my final post.
    Go Leafs Go
    Love those Bruins

    • No bud.
      Just the George angling part.
I like reading the other parts of your posts.
Don’t pout. Just gimmie good stuff to read.

  9. Been reading a lot how Crosby Mackinnon and Marchand work out together and hangout. Bergeron and Krech will be both gone when Nathan becomes an UFA love to see him in Black and Gold playing with Bad Brad. When dreaming you might as well dream big.

    • He’s probably a Penguin or Habs fan from way back.
I doubt we’d be on his list of preferred destinations.
I’mholding out hope for Taylor Hall.
      I can dream too.

    • There ain’t no bad brad in n the black and gold… but if Nate wants to play on the black and gold he could maybe center guentz after sid walks away.
