Flames buy out Michael Stone, the final four salary arbitration filings, and more in today’s NHL morning coffee headlines.

TSN.CA: The Calgary Flames officially bought out the final year of defenseman Michael Stone’s contract after he cleared unconditional waivers on Friday. He was entering the final season of a three-year, $10.5-million contract.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Cap Friendly indicates the Flames now have over $7.75-million in salary-cap space with restricted free agents Matthew Tkachuk and Andrew Mangiapane to re-sign. Tkachuk’s next contract will likely exceed that amount.

It’s anticipated they’ll make a cost-cutting move before the season opens in October.  Possible trade candidates could include defensemen T.J. Brodie or Travis Hamonic or winger Michael Frolik.

TORONTO SUN: The Maple Leafs signed former Philadelphia Flyers winger Matt Read to a professional tryout offer.

NEW YORK POST: The Rangers have added Gord Murphy to the coaching staff of their AHL affiliate in Hartford.

  1. Yesterday I expanded on the trade offers between BlackNGold and Flames fan:

    “Brodie and Frolik

For Rust and JJ and Ruhweedel

    Waive Ruhweedel

Now Cgy has over $10 M available to sign Tkachuk and Mangiapane

Ggy gets Rust to augment the forwards

Ggy moves on from Frolik which is a contract that has been recently bandied about as a trade option”

With that trade Pens Go from ZERO chance at cup (with JJ as a Reg) to fair chance at meeting Bolts in ECF

GMJR just needs to shed some Sal to sign Petterson and also still get under the Cap

    • Pengy , you’re a good fella but you’re obsessed with getting rid of JJ .
Maybe just pretend they did trade him and that the new guy has tremendous upside.
When he is on the ice sing a little bit, I find that helps till the medication kicks in.

      • I think what Pengy is after here; is he wants all of us to refer to him as JJ; but to nervous to ask.

Maybe Lyle can assist and have Pengy handle autocorrected to JJ.

      • I keep forgetting who JJ is until I look it up.

      • Thanks Vinnie

        I might go hoarse singing.

I just wish that GMJR had an obsession to win the cup again in the magnitude of a minute fraction of my obsession to rid the Pens of JJ.

If he did; JJ would be gone ; Pens would have a chance again ; and I could end my obsession

With my luck it would be a Pens/Leafs trade involving JJ

I can’t afford to start taking meds due to JJ; because if I start; I’d likely not stop

      • Hi Caper

        Jumpin’ Jehoshaphat here

      • Hi J Shark

Since I offered a proposal of a trade with Sharks (see on Today’s Rumours side) to meet your suggested needs of filling out 3rd line ; AND getting 2nd line winger; please then do NOT look up who JJ is.

Let’s just pretend it’s a silly nickname for say um , Bobby Orr …. Oki Doki?

  2. @ Pengy: Vinnie does have a point: In short, the more you wish for JJ to be traded, is the less likely it will ever happen.

    • Hi Joey

So if I wish for him to stay; he’ll get traded?

      • 🙏🙏🙏

      • @ Pengy: Ya never know bud 🙂
