NHL Morning Coffee Headlines – September 28, 2019

The latest on Sidney Crosby, Corey Perry, Aleksander Barkov, and more in today’s NHL morning coffee headlines.

TRIBLIVE.COM: Sidney Crosby had his No. 87 retired by the Rimouski Oceanic of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Crosby spent two seasons with the Oceanic (2003-04, 2004-05) before being drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins. In 2005, he led them to the QMJHL President’s Cup championship.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The QMJHL has retired his No. 87 league-wide.  I caught a few games with Crosby’s Oceanic whenever they came to Charlottetown and he was always the best player on the ice. It was obvious he was headed to NHL superstardom.

THE ATHLETIC: Florida Panthers head coach Joel Quenneville believes Aleksander Barkov and Brett Connolly should be fine after leaving Thursday’s preseason game against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The pair were reevaluated on Friday. Meanwhile, Lightning center Cedric Paquette was fined $2,500.00 for high-sticking Panthers winger Frank Vatrano.

TSN: A broken foot could delay Corey Perry’s debut with the Dallas Stars. Perry signed a one-year contract with the Stars this summer after being bought out by the Anaheim Ducks. The injury sidelined him throughout training camp and could keep him out of their season-opener.

STARTRIBUNE.COM: Victor Rask could be the odd man out among Minnesota Wild centers. Acquired from Carolina midway through last season, Rask managed just three points in 23 games with the Wild.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Rask’s stats have tumbled since reaching 21 goals and 48 points in 2015-16. If he can’t cut it in Minnesota he could end up on the trade block again.

THE SCORE: The Calgary Flames signed free agent winger Tobias Rieder to a one-year, two-way contract worth $700K.

TSN: Ottawa Senators forward Rudolfs Balcers is sidelined indefinitely with a lower-body injury.

NBC SPORTS BOSTON: Bruins forward Joakim Nordstrom’s foot injury could keep him out of the club’s season-opener.

THE DETROIT NEWS: Former Red Wings coach Nick Polano died Thursday of Alzheimer’s disease at age 78. He was the Wings’ bench boss from 1982 to 1985 and was Steve Yzerman’s first NHL coach. He went on to become an assistant GM with the Wings and held scouting jobs with the Calgary Flames and Ottawa Senators.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: My condolences to Palono’s family, friends and the Wings organization.

  1. Remember that clip of Crosby, when playing for Rimouski, putting the puck on the flat of his blade, wheeling around the net and tucking it in the goal like he had a lacrosse stick? And Cherry, showing it on Coach’s Corner, called him a hot-dog.

    • Crosby came into the league as an 18 year with an entire universe of expectations on his shoulders and he met all of them and more. At 32 and after winning just about anything possible he is still the hardest worker on the team. He’s got not ego and he’s super humble and always makes time for fans. He has nothing to prove to anyone. It’s been a genuine pleasure watching him grow up.

    • That has been done by Finnish and swedish players for decades! Crosby, good as he is, was hardly the first to do it!

  2. Cherry is the biggest Oscar Meyer of all

    • As things turned out – and to paraphrase Winston Churchill “some hot dog!”

  3. I’m very happy for my future son-in-law….. we unfortunately couldn’t make the trip to see his sweater retired.

    • The Leutner’s must be surprised!

      • George

How do you know that I’m not Leutner!..LOL

Sid is just with Leutner for public appearances

    • Pengy…penguins and leafs made a trafe… goalie Tristan Jarry to Toronto Timashov to Pittsburgh.
What do you know about timashov? I heard with Toronto’s depth he wasn’t going to play projected 4th liner. Jarry has looked great at penguins camp..

      More moves coming?

      • I can’t find anything confirming this. Jarry was MAFs supposed replacement until Matty destroyed the AHL and won 2 cups while still being a rookie. I hate this trade and it proves that Rutherford should probably move on and retire. And I hate the Leafs almost as much as the Flyer and the Caps. It’s hard enough seeing Kappanan wearing that god awful blue monstrosity.

      • Where’d you see – hear – this Blackngold, Absolutely nothing on it anywhere that I can find, including CapFriendly, and they’re pretty quick incorporating such changes.

      • Pens were going to lose Jarry for nothing if they waived him… so they got something … Timoshov May never make it out of WBS

        Time will tell

I’m very upset that JJ still a Pen …. he’s playing right now

Oddly enough a reporter had posted the other day a suggestion of one of the moves that I’ve been touting for 2 months …. Jj for Kessler

The Jarry move doesn’t free up any space …. he wasn’t counting in the CF list showing the 330 K over

So Pens start with 22 OR must waive a player earning >$1M ; replace with League min player; start season at 23 with only $4,600 (that’s four thousand, six hundred) in space

        Neither is sustainable

The offer to Duck’s could be stepped up …. Kessler and Eaves for JJ

Ducks paying $4.6 M for those two to sit at home then retire …. that’s a load for getting nothing for a team that has a very tight budget

Kessler and Eaves for JJ gets them JJ effectively for $1.9 Per

        They keep talking about Rusty

Had a great game the other day and so far today has played well

        Rusty + JJ + Ruhweedel

For Kessler + Eaves + Ritchie

That Leaves Pens at 21 (13-6-2) with $4.9 M in space

Sign McQ as 7th D for $1M or less and then $3.9 M left for 1 depth forward…. use a Baby Pen and start season with 23 and $3.2 M in space

No matter what —— JJ just canNOT play for the Pens

They reported yesterday that he would sit today …. yet he’s playing (if you can call that playing ….. NOT)

      • Deee

        All a public front

        Can she cook?

My daughter is a wonderful cook

        Wait ‘till Sid meets her

        It’s in the cards!

      • Deee,

Every father feels his daughter is beautiful

        I do believe so

My daughter is blonde as well

She has a great personality and fantastic sense of humour just like her old man … LOL

Wait ‘till I tell her about her future husband

      • Dee & Pengy…It said minor swap Jarry and Timoshev. I could have misread it wrong on hf boards pretty sure it wasn’t a proposal..

        j j will go with a sweetner added Rust…

pen may move petterson to second pair and Marino is making a big push for the final spot with grudbrason…

      • Dude that girl can cook just by putting a bikini on. It can’t be easy to find a supermodel that is cool about how much time you obsess about working out and getting better when you are already the best. That girl deserves a Stanley cup just for standing by that kind of perfectionist. And I’m 100% sure your daughter is a wonderful person both on the outside and the inside. She just might have to drop her standards to a Jack Eichel level talent. It will still be fine:

      • Deee

Hitting below the belt there … betrothing my daughter to JJ

        Not cool man

        No Soup for you

Now your not invited to the Sid / Daughter Pengy wedding

We’re having it at the Cole Harbour Tim Horton’s… open doughnut bar

      • Sorry Dee

Read Jack … and thought you meant JJ; missed that it was Eichel

That’s one thing JJ has over Eichel …. looks…. by a farrrrrrr margin

Wow …. no …. my Daughter counts personality first ; but I don’t believe that Eichel could possibly have a personality that compensated for his looks that are best suited fir Radio

  4. Pengy you might like this someone tweeted Crosby was crying because he was thinking about Johnson and Gudbranson on defense.

    • Now that was funny!

    • Caper,

Just JJ on D makes me cry

      He brings down everybody 😢

GudB not anywhere near as bad as he was in Van

He actually played very well (small sample size ) with Pettersson👍

      • Plus Gudbranson can actually knock out most of the guys in the league. And he is actually really well spoken in interviews he’s not the big dummy I thought he was. I really don’t mind keeping him around. Jackass on the other hand let his parents steal all his money and he’s always sucked. He can go.

    • Caper..Johnson will be gone one way or another.

      • I’m 🙏🙏🙏🙏

  5. Dee & Pengy & George…I may have misread the Jarry for Timoshev article it said Leafs-Penguins minor league swap. it didn’t say proposal???

If I misread sorry I checked the penguins site and Jarry is still listed on their roster so…..

Moves must come by October 2nd for cap compliance. Pens are moving a defenseman for sure most likely Chad Rudwhedel $750,000 they are $331,000 over the cap.. They are trying hard to move Jack Johnson but hearing that a sweetener will have to be added to take Johnson…that sweetener will be either Brian Rust Dominik Simon or Zack Aston reese

    possible —–Anahein Los Angeles Minnesota..

With Guerin now the Gm in Minny talks have reopened. They want to move Victor Rask we want to move Jack JohnsoN.

We had talks way back about Kessel and Zucker.. they names have changed… ill take Victor Rask as our 4th line center he has skills. Johnson and Simon to minny..

Nick Bujgstad or Brian Rust plus Jack Johnson to kings

Tyler Toffoli & Alec Martinez to Pittsburgh
