Alexander Ovechkin scored twice (including in overtime) to give the Washington Capitals a 4-3 win over the Winnipeg Jets. At one point, the Caps led 3-0. The Jets also lost Matthieu Perreault and Joel Armia to injuries.
Vincent Trochek also scored twice (including in overtime) as the Florida Panthers nipped the New Jersey Devils 4-3.
Nic Dowd’s overtime goal lifted the Los Angeles Kings to a 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Sidney Crosby scored twice in a losing cause for the Pens. The Kings were playing without defenseman Tom Gilbert, who received a three-game suspension for boarding Anaheim Ducks winger Nick Ritchie.
Rick Nash’s game-winning goal (also his 399th career NHL goal) lifted the New York Rangers to a 5-3 win over the Edmonton Oilers.
Marian Hossa scored twice and Corey Crawford made 38 saves for his second shutout in three games as the Chicago Blackhawks blanked the Colorado Avalanche 4-0.
Mitch Marner scored twice and Frederik Andersen made 42 saves as the Toronto Maple Leafs edged the Buffalo Sabres 2-1. Earlier in the day, the Sabres learned defenseman Zach Bogosian could be sidelined a month with a sprained knee.
Rookie Matthew Tkachuk rewarded the Calgary Flames’ decision not to return him to junior hockey by scoring twice to lead his club to a 3-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks.
Mike Hoffman scored the only goal and Mike Condon made 27 saves in his Ottawa Senators’ debut to blank the Vancouver Canucks 1-0. Condon, acquired earlier this week in a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins, was filling in for starter Craig Anderson, who’s been given another leave of absence as his wife battles cancer. The Sens were also without forward Mark Stone (neck injury).
The Boston Bruins endured 10 shootout rounds before Jimmy Hayes goal lifted them to a 4-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Claude Giroux’s shootout goal gave the Philadelphia Flyers a 3-2 win over the New York Islanders.
Shootout goals by Anthony Duclair and Radim Vrbata gave the Arizona Coyotes a 3-2 win over the Nashville Predators. Coyotes rookie defenseman Jakob Chychrun is sticking with the club beyond 10 games, disproving the low assessment of him by scouts at the NHL draft.
