NHL Morning Coffee Headlines – May 14, 2026
The Avalanche advance to the Western Conference Final, reaction to Matthew Schaefer winning the Calder Trophy, the Maple Leafs firing head coach Craig Berube, and more in today’s NHL Morning Coffee Headlines.
NHL.COM: The Colorado Avalanche are going to the Western Conference Final after defeating the Minnesota Wild 4-3 on an overtime goal by Brett Kulak in Game 5 to take the series four games to one.
The Wild opened the scoring on a goal by Marcus Johansson and expanded that lead to 3-0 on two goals by Nick Foligno. However, Avalanche forward Parker Kelly made it 3-1 in the second period, with Jack Drury and Nathan MacKinnon scoring late in the third period to tie it, setting the stage for Martin Necas making a great individual effort to set up Kulak’s series-winning goal.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Wild were seemingly poised to send the series back to Minnesota for Game 6. They dominated Colorado early, driving Mackenzie Blackwood from the Avalanche net after he gave up three goals on 13 shots. Scott Wedgewood took over and stopped all seven shots he faced as the Avalanche stormed back, outshooting the Wild 22-7 over the remaining two periods and overtime.

Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon (NHL Images).
MacKinnon’s tying goal was a back-breaker, sniping a wrist shot from the faceoff circle that went over the right shoulder of Wild goaltender Jesper Wallstedt and bulged the twine under the crossbar.
Necas’ assist on Kulak’s goal occurred because he realized the Avalanche didn’t have enough men on the ice as he was about to go off for a line change. He stayed on, gained control of the puck, skated around the Wild net, and set up Kulak to end the series.
The Wild were hampered in this series with the absences of two-way center Joel Eriksson Ek and blueline stalwart Jonas Brodin, and blueliner Zach Bogosian missed this game with an upper-body injury. The Avalanche were banged up too, playing without forward Artturi Lehkonen and defenseman Sam Malinski for the second straight game. Superstar blueliner Cale Makar left this game briefly with an upper-body injury.
Colorado’s depth and experience made the difference in this game and in this series. The Wild are an excellent team and should remain a contender next season, but the Avs showed everyone in this series why they’re the favorite to win the Stanley Cup this year.
The Avalanche await the winner of the Anaheim Ducks-Vegas Golden Knights series. The Golden Knights hold a 3-2 series lead and could advance to the Western Conference Final with a win on Thursday.
NHL.COM: New York Islanders defenseman Matthew Schaefer won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the 2025-26 Rookie of the Year.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: A well-deserved honor for Schaefer, who was chosen first overall in last year’s draft by the Islanders, quickly establishing himself among their core players. He was presented with the Calder Trophy by his family while appearing on ABC’s “GMA3” in New York.
Schaefer is the second player to win the award by unanimous vote, joining Hall of Famer Teemu Selanne, who won it in 1993. He set the NHL record for points by an 18-year-old defenseman (59) and tied the single-season record for most goals (23) by a rookie blueliner. He’s the youngest player to win the Calder, and the first Islander to do so since Mathew Barzal in 2017.
MONTREAL HOCKEY NOW: Canadiens winger Ivan Demidov was runner-up to Schaefer for the Calder Trophy, garnering the majority of the second-place votes. Canadiens goaltender Jakub Dobes finished fourth behind Anaheim Ducks winger Beckett Sennecke, and Habs center Oliver Kapanen was 11th.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Demidov led all rookies in 43 assists and 62 points. Dobes led all rookie netminders with 29 wins, and was second in goals-against average (2.78) for rookie goalies with at least 20 games played. Kapanen was third among rookie goal scorers with 22.
TSN: The Toronto Maple Leafs fired head coach Craig Berube on Wednesday morning. He was their bench boss for the past two seasons, coaching them to first place in the Atlantic Division with 108 points in 2024-25 and the second round of the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs. However, they tumbled to 78 points this season and missed the playoffs.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Berube paid the price for the poor decisions by Brad Treliving, who lost his job as general manager in March. Some insiders assumed he was safe because of his friendship with Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment honcho Keith Pelley, but that obviously wasn’t the case.
Berube will likely land with another NHL club at some point. Meanwhile, Treliving’s replacement, John Chayka, must find a suitable replacement for Berube who will meet the approval of team captain and franchise player Auston Matthews.
Chayka claimed that the players had no input into his decision to fire Berube. However, he will have to take into account what effect the next coach will have on Matthews, who has two years left on his contract and has made Leafs Nation nervous with his silence about his future.
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL: Golden Knights defenseman Brayden McNabb received a one-game suspension for his hit on Anaheim Ducks center Ryan Poehling during Game 5 of their second-round series on Tuesday.
THE PROVINCE: The Vancouver Canucks appeared poised to make assistant general manager Ryan Johnson their next general manager.
Johnson is also the GM of their AHL affiliate in Abbotsford. Reports by CHEK-TV’s Rick Dhaliwal, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, and Canucks Army’s Irfaan Gaffar claimed Johnson is set to take over the role.
MAYOR’S MANOR: The Los Angeles Kings are getting closer to staging an NHL outdoor game on the beach in Santa Monica, CA.
RATINGS.COM: Marco D’Amico profiled prospect winger Wyatt Cullen, who is the son of former NHL forward Matt Cullen.
The 6’1, 180-pound Cullen is in his second season with the US National Development Team, overcoming an injury that sidelined him during the opening months of the season to finish with 16 points in 15 games. He also had a breakout performance at the U-18 World Championships, with three goals and nine points in five games for Team USA.
Matt Cullen related to the Cullen brothers who played for the Leafs a long time ago?
BCLeaf Fan: John Cullen is Wyatt’s great-uncle.
The Avs are a team that look like no matter how much the other teams ahead they have the players to come back, sign of a great team.
Like I said before and others before me I think it will be an Avs/canes final. Bruins in order to sign at one of their free agents and make some good trades, need to shed some more money in order to entice, some better players to Boston, no. 1 Korpisalo, followed by Elias Lindholm I believe have to go. There’s ten mill off the books and Lohrei another three mill gone, his offensive abilities one of the best on the team defensively he’s not very good. Casey M., turned into a decent two way forward Henri showed he can step in. I only hope this is not another disappointing season with Sweeney not being able to trade for anyone who can fill in the no. 1 centre and someone else capable of shoring up the d.
Hope is a wonderful thing Mr. Apple.
But unless you think Pettersson in VCR is a #1 C, Sweeney won’t be getting one.
Unless he trades the farm or McAvoy/Pasta.
I’m not disappointed by that, as I couldn’t pull it off either. Not sure anyone else could either.
I don’t go along with that Ray I think something will be done because it has to be done I don’t agree with a lot of what Sweeney’s done. But I don’t hate him however despite what ownership says if the bruins don’t improve and what I see as improved means making it past the first round I think this might be Sweeney’s last year re: of whether his contract runs until 2028 or not. Most bruins fans I’ve talked to friends and business acquaintances want Don out. They can’t stand him.
Ray.. my 2 … I’m thinking Sweeney is in a much tougher position trying to build this B’s team this year than last year … they have 3 Dmen and goalies to count on and a a 4th line that is probably set … work is needed on the 1-2 & 3 lines
John, here is what the up and coming teams – ANA, PHI, BUF, MTL – have in common.
They all struggled for an extended period and accumulated young talented players in the draft. Or traded more established players while rebuilding for young prospects. Thompson and Byrum in Buffalo, Suzuki in MTL are examples.
All of them were rebuilds. And I am cool if they go that route, but they won’t. At least not yet.
Even COL went through it, it was just a while ago. Their #1 C was drafted 1st overall. Landeskog 2nd OA. Makar 4th OA.
You get the odd guy like Aho, Suzuki or Bergeron for a #1 C that get picked later in the first, but doesn’t happen often. And they don’t get traded once they are established. Suzuki never played a game in the NHL until he got to MTL.
I would like to be wrong about the ability to get a #1C, because that is what they need. We agree on that!
Happy to see suggestions of who that might be, and what they would cost in terms of assets.
Its’ easy to pick guys to get rid of, you hear it in Edmonton all the time. The hard part is who do you get that’s better.
Agree Joe. And up front they don’t have elite talent outside of Pasta.
Heh, Ray. When did Ottawa tumble back from the “up and coming?” Are they already “over the hill?” 🙂
Last I looked they finished 7 up on Anaheim (and did so in a MUCH tougher Conference overall), 1 up on Philadelphia, 7 b/o Montreal and 10 b/o Buffalo – hardly insurmountable.
haha, no slight intended for your beloved Sens George.
I basically just did a quick run through in my head for teams that played in the 2nd round.
Heh. Just kidding. Had Philadelphia met Carolina in the 1st round and Ottawa had played Pittsburgh, the reverse would be true.
JA I am on record as saying that the Bruins need multiple top 6 forwards. Wings are easier to get than a first line center. Go get wings ,you are stuck with Elias Lindholm and Zacha is there most dependable all around forward! There are 32 teams in the league and about 15-20 legitimate first line centers. And one Kopitar is retiring this year.
I agree sr but I can’t see how Sweeney can do it. He can definitely get one top centre and another good d. I wish we had the bucks the wings had when I heard Sweeney had 16 mill I thought this is great and then I saw the wings I might be wrong but I thought I heard they had over twice that amount.
Lack of center depth and/or lack of an elite center sealed the Wild’s fate.
Next controversy: What will Quinn Hughes do? It is obvious that if he wishes to stay in competition for cup, the Wild are there. They were the 2nd best team in these playoffs!
I don’t agree with that. The Wild are way too weak down the middle to be considered serious cup contenders IMO. Canes are much better team than wild.
As I said in today’s other offering, the Wild are going to feel the bite of Kaprizov’s absurd 17 million, as soon as next year. And Hughes has one year left and will suck up whatever cap increases come along, meaning the Wild will be in cap hell shortly. Never mind that they currently have 6 players 34 year old or more …
Wow. Sens Legends Nick Foligno and Sparker Kelly heavily involved in last night’s game. To be up 3-0 and blow it. Ughh…that’ll sting for a while in Minny.
Was never a Parker Kelly fan. Good for him though.
Well deserved by the Islander’s rookie. It’ll be interesting to watch him and Hutson grow and battle in the league.
Bruins … Sweeney got lucky last offseason filling out the roster with depth players and making the playoffs even though the Bruins might have been the worst team to make the playoffs .. This year it’s different with lots of questions that need to be answered… Goalie situation what to do with Korpisalo and DiPietro .. Korpisalo is going to be a hard move and MD won’t pass thru waivers …Arvidsson is a UFA who’s going to want to $$ and years a raise up from his $4 million now and at 33 years old …Lohrei is he keep or try to move in part of a package his stand alone value can’t be that high he’s a bad Dman in his DZone but has some offense skills …Zacha and Minten are eligible to sign for extensions this offseason .. do they extend Minten and try to trade Zacha who’s probably going to want up towards $8 million per … Bruins offseason needs …a legit center .. a goal scorer..
2 Dmen one with size and toughness in front of net the other who can play both zones …. Lots of luck with getting a center they are a hard get .. there are more that a few UFA Dmen who can help this team …..a consistent goal scorer is another hard get …
E Lindholm is going to be a bad contact that they will be stuck with .. Good Luck Sweeney
IMO, Sturm is hands down coach of the year. What he did with that roster is nothing short of wizardry. Fact he is not even in final three is laughable. Roster is arguably bottom three in league.
Lindy Ruff says, “Hold my beer.”
Berube will be hired … and probably fairly soon … as the NHL Coach’s Carousel never seems to cease rotating judging by the number of coaching changes by 30 of the 32 teams over the past two decades. This averages out to 8 per team and includes numerous “recycled” opportunities (Vegas and Seattle joined in 2017 and 2021 and they, too, feature “recycled” bench bosses)
Starting with the Eastern Conference, 6 of the 16 come in at below the league average of 8:

Tortorella, Laviolette and Hitchcock have each worn more hats than a lost and found bin in that span!
Which teams have vacancies now? Toronto, Edmonton, presumably L.A. … anyone else?
I would guess that Bruce Cassidy has his pick. If the Avs go all the way, Hakstol presumably gets another HC gig.
George O so you are saying rent instead of buying, because you won t be there long enough!
Heh … certainly where some of those teams are concerned, Sr.
fikshun, although not out of a job yet, the coaches (including those classified as “interim”) of New Jersey, Nashville, Vancouver, Winnipeg and Columbus could still get the axe. Along with Tortorella in Vegas if he doesn’t get them to at least the Cup finals – they’re that ruthless.
And they’ll probably do it by removing his name tag from his dressing-room door.
George, I am pretty sure Berube will not be hired, possibly ever again. The drop in the Leafs play this year was ridiculous and he and his staff had no answers.
I also think teams are looking more at younger coaches and hoping they can connect with today’s, shall we say, entitled players.
@BCLeafFan you think other GMs will actually look at Berube in that light? Highly doubtful.
The Leafs gave away Marner and then threw money at weak, old support crews. Marner was far ore important to that team then they admitted.
Berube is taking the blame for horrible team management. He will get a job very soon.
BCLF why did Columbus hire Bowness a nd Totorella ended up in Vegas,if teams are looking for younger coaches!
The other shoe has finally and inevitably fallen in Edmonton but the wrong guy is terminated.
Not saying Chris Knoblauch is – or was – the ultimate answer to the Oilers current struggles but owner Daryl Katz should take a look at how his upper management team of Jeff Jackson and Stan Bowman have borrowed pages from the Keystone Cops playbook. Meanwhile, here in Edmonton, the fan base is increasingly concerned about Connor and his long term future with the organization.
I for one, would not blame him in the least for seeking greener pastures over the course of his two year extension. With Bowman (and Jackson) at the helm, this franchise is on track to repeat its now notorious “Decade of Darkness”.
Amateur hour how that was handled yesterday.
What a joke.
Yep, I could not agree more.
SR, good point, and time will tell. Berube to Edmonton would blow my mind though.
I’m hoping the Leafs hire Bruce Cassidy and expecting, someone from out of the blue instead so that affected my thinking.
Tess
Until EDM can identify that perhaps it’s not only the coaches to blame but management’s inability to find sound goaltending, defensive depth, and to tell their stars McDavid and Draisaitl, that defensive responsibility wins championships, the results will be the same.
It’s reminiscent of Yzerman in Detroit. Until Scotty Bowman got there and convinced Yzerman to be a more complete pjj lb Ayer the wings were perennial playoff disappointments.
Oil will never have better leverage in trade market than now. He gets past July 1 next year without signing and they are hosed. If things look ugly this coming year (Repeat of this year) the drums will be banging and they will have less leverage than they do now.
IMO, this year showed McD and Leon not firing on all cylinders this team is not very good. A testament to their greatness that they got as close as they did. I don’t see that team being legit contender in next two years. Mistakes were made and they have a lot of holes to fill.
Will be interesting to see how it plays out, but my feeling is now is the time to trade him. Bargain price for acquirer, two years to convince him to re-sign. Question is, who has the assets to get him yet still remain on an upward trend as contender? Ultimately he controls everything here.
SJ could do it, and that’s about it Eagle. But not gonna happen. Neither party wants that.
Can’t argue with the mistakes part of your post, and ya, some holes, but I wouldn’t write them off just yet.
Won’t find an established true #1 starter in net, so will need to find a guy who is blocked. NHL backup type guy or a guy who is thriving in the AHL. And hope you catch lightning in a bottle. Like Vladar.
The rest of the need list is the bottom half of the lineup.
The biggest trade chip they have is one of their 3 LD’s, all can play in the top 4 so wasting cap space there. And Isaac Howard.
Tess, one thing for sure …. Bowman knows with almost absolute certainty that, if and when he’s fired, his chances of ever landing another NHL GM job ranks somewhere between slim and none.
Ryan Johnson confirmed as the new GM of the Canucks.
Willing to bet Edmonton goes after Berube for HC position.
Edmonton being denied the right to speak with Bruce Cassidy makes me believe he may already be heading somewhere like Toronto…
“You have to realize, the Canucks are paying Jim Rutherford and Patrik Allvin next year to do nothing. Plus, they’re still paying OEL… Economics play a role.”
Nucks hired him because of the low pay he accepted.
I feel that it was fitting that Brett Kulak got the series winning goal last night. Played for 3 teams last year. He is playing well despite being an Oiler cap dump.
