  1. Crowd reaction or just the crowd…….I don’t have
access to a TV but I want to know over the course
of the Detroit/Winnipeg game if their were chants
“SELL THE TEAM” or were signs held up with the
    same remark.

  2. OWNERSHIP…..I just turned 70 and have been following hockey since my mid teens. I have never
seen a fan base that I can recall turn on ownership
like the Detroit fans are doing. Ownership deserves
it. All I am asking has there ever been anything like
this happen before in the NHL.???

    • I’d say the both the last years of Toronto’s Ballard years (I know I’m old) and the Ottawa’s Melnyk years are comparables. Chicago also had a similar stretch under previous ownership.

    • You have never been to Arizona eh? Fans turned on several owners here. All of whom deserved it

    • FREDO, Rob and AZHockeyNut cited 2 of at least 5 other similar fan reaction.

Here in Ottawa there was the “Melnyk Out” episode, which went WAY beyond fans chanting in the arena. In fact, a fund was raised from donations by outraged fans to plaster “sell demands” on billboards around the city, and that more or less continued right up to the time of the death of owner Eugene Melnyk and the eventual sale to Andlauer.

Chicago owner Bill “Dollar Bill” Wirtz earned the nickname foisted upon him by enraged fans who charged that his modus operandi was the run the team on the cheap, including a ban on televised home games charging it was unfair to season ticket-holders. Fans there often left the huge Chicago rink almost empty, and when the team asked for “a moment of silence” at a home game following his death, many of the small crowd there booed.

And on Long Island, NYI fans, fed up with the antics of owner Charles Wang also chanted “sell the team” and “we want Wang out.”

So, what’s occurring in Detroit is not exactly unique.

    • Pocklington became public enemy #1 in Edmonton and might top the most hated NHL owner chart.

  5. I want to chime in on comments yesterday about Detroit in the 1970’s ad some poor management decisions.

Full disclosure the Big M was my favourite player for his 4 years on the Habs. No point in explaining why as all who watched him then know his qualities and either like him or don’t.

However, that trade was good for Detroit, a young Mickey Redmond just started scoring, Bill Collins and Guy Charron were solid 2-way centres.
Between the three of them they scored 136 more goals than Mahovlich over the same four year period.
Redmond on his own outscored Mahovlich during those four years.

The trade was great for the Habs for the reasons enumerated yesterday and to be fair it was a real win/win trade.

Loved the Power line of Howe, Mahovlich and Delvecchio, but Mickey Redmond was great add to Detroit, and he is still serving Detroit fans!!!!!
