In today’s NHL Rumor Mill, we look at the latest on Devils defenseman Dougie Hamilton and Flyers winger Owen Tippett, plus the difficulty facing the Canucks in finding a second-line center.

THE ATHLETIC: Pierre LeBrun reports New Jersey Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald downplayed the effect of defenseman Luke Hughes’ new contract on blueliner Dougie Hamilton’s future with the club.

Hughes recently signed a seven-year contract with an average annual value of $9 million. With the rising salary cap, it’s not a big deal to have two defensemen earning $9 million annually. However, there is only one top power-play unit on a team, and both Hughes and Hamilton are suited for it.

LeBrun noted that NHL clubs are keeping a close eye on this situation in case Hamilton becomes available. He carries a 10-team trade list in his contract through 2027-28.

Fitzgerald pointed out that the Devils are running a power play where the strategy is based on the opposing team’s penalty kill, adding that Hughes and Hamilton play different styles. He also said that Hamilton is on a long-term contract and insisted that Hughes’ contract had nothing with the other Devils defensemen.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Devils are riding high in the standings right now. If they remain there throughout the season, they will have no reason to part with Hamilton. However, if things get rocky and they start tumbling down the standings, Hamilton’s name could resurface in the rumor mill.

Some have pointed to rumors suggesting Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes would like to one day join his brothers in New Jersey. For that to happen means shopping Hamilton to free up the cap space.

For now, there is no indication that such a move will take place. The earliest that it could be would be next summer, depending on how things shake out for Quinn in Vancouver.

THE PROVINCE: Ben Kuzma pointed out the difficulty the Vancouver Canucks face in finding a suitable second-line center if Filip Chytil remains sidelined for a lengthy period.

He believes Canucks GM Patrik Allvin will have to get creative to address the issue. That could mean parting with a good prospect and draft picks because that’s what it would take to swing a suitable deal.

The Canucks were linked to Minnesota Wild center Marco Rossi and Anaheim Ducks center Mason McTavish during the summer. However, the duo re-signed with their respective clubs.

Kuzma pointed out that the struggling Calgary Flames need to do something. He wondered if the Canucks should pursue Flames captain Mikael Backlund. The 36-year-old center is struggling offensively this season, but he’s strong in the faceoff circle and is capable of more on a better team.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Canucks are among several clubs that were in the market for a second-line center this summer. However, there were no suitable options available then, and none are now. By the time the market for centers improves, it could be too late to save the Canucks’ season.

Backlund is unlikely to be available if the Canucks were interested in him. He’s in the final season of his current contract with a full no-movement clause. He signed a two-year extension in September with the intention of finishing his career with the Flames.

PHILLY HOCKEY NOW: William James cited Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman telling the “Morning Cuppa Hockey” podcast that he doesn’t see the Flyers shopping Owen Tippett.

The 26-year-old Flyers winger was the recent subject of trade speculation as some observers suggested he could be a trade chip to address other roster needs. However, Friedman hasn’t heard Tippett’s name out there in the trade market, adding that he’s a player the Flyers aren’t really looking to move.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Tippett is under contract through 2031-32 and is off to a sizzling start with a team-leading five goals in six games. He’s not going anywhere.

RECAPPING WEDNESDAY’S GAMES

NHL.COM: Buffalo Sabres goaltender Colten Ellis stopped 27 shots in his NHL debut as his club doubled up the Detroit Red Wings 4-2, snapping the latter’s five-game win streak. Jack Quinn had a goal and two assists for the Sabres (3-4-0), who’ve won three of their last four contests. J.T. Compher and Emmitt Finnie replied for the 5-2-0 Red Wings.

The Montreal Canadiens (6-2-0) picked up their sixth win in their last seven games by nipping the Calgary Flames 2-1. Mike Matheson tallied the winner in overtime on a beautiful set-up from rookie winger Ivan Demidov. Zack Bolduc also scored, and Jakub Dobes kicked out 37 shots for the win. Dustin Wolf made 28 saves and Adam Klapka tied the game for the Flames, who have lost seven straight (0-6-1) since their season-opening win over the Edmonton Oilers.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Lighting issues in the aging Scotiabank Saddledome delayed the start of the game by 10 minutes. With the win, the Canadiens sit atop the Atlantic Division with 12 points.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that sidelined Canadiens winger Patrik Laine was seeking a second opinion for a lower-body injury, raising questions over whether he reinjured the knee that sidelined him for over two months early last season.

New Jersey Devils goalie Nico Daws turned aside 29 shots, and teammate Dawson Mercer collected two assists in a 4-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild. Brenden Dillon scored what proved to be the game-winning goal as the Devils extended their win streak to six games (6-0-1). Matt Boldy scored for the 3-4-1 Wild, who have dropped four of their last five contests (1-3-1).

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Devils hold first place in the Metropolitan Division with 12 points. Devils forward Stefan Noesen made his season debut after undergoing a procedure for a groin injury that he re-injured during the offseason.

HEADLINES

OTTAWA SUN: Senators captain Brady Tkachuk spoke to the media on Wednesday for the first time since undergoing surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb last week. He was non-commital about when he’ll return to action, but remains confident he’ll be back within the six to eight-week recovery period.

VEGAS HOCKEY NOW: Golden Knights goaltender Adin Hill is week-to-week after suffering an injury to his left leg during Monday’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes. The club also placed defenseman Noah Hanifin on injured reserve. He has been out since October 8 with an undisclosed injury. Sidelined forward Brett Howden (upper-body injury) will travel with the team and could return to action on Saturday.

SPORTSNET: Vancouver Canucks winger Brock Boeser returned to the team after missing their last two games for personal reasons.

TSN/ESPN: New York Islanders forward Pierre Engvall is expected to miss the remainder of the season after undergoing ankle surgery. The Islanders also announced they fired goaltending coach Piero Greco, promoting Sergei Naumovs from their AHL affiliate in Bridgeport. Naumovs worked with Isles starter Ilya Sorokin during their years with KHL club CSKA Moscow.

BOSTON HOCKEY NOW: The Bruins placed defenseman Jordan Harris (lower body) on injured reserve.

TSN: The Nashville Predators returned forward Brady Martin to the OHL’s Soo Greyhounds. The 18-year-old center was chosen fifth overall by the Predators in the 2025 NHL Draft. He had one assist in three games.

RECAPPING TUESDAY’S NHL ACTION

NHL.COM: Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby scored to pass Mario Lemieux for the most regular-season and playoff points (1,896) in franchise history in a 5-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks. Kris Letang collected two assists to reach 600 for his career, and Justin Brazeau had a goal and two assists for the 5-2-0 Penguins. Conor Garland replied for the injury-depleted Canucks, who are 4-3-0 in their first seven games.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Canucks were missing Filip Chytil, Jonathan Lekkerimaki, Teddy Blueger, and Derek Forbort. The four remain sidelined by injuries. Winger Brock Boeser also missed this game as he’s on a leave of absence for personal reasons.

New York Islanders rookie Matthew Schaefer scored and collected an assist as his club nipped the San Jose Sharks 4-3, handing the latter their sixth straight loss (0-4-2). Schaefer became the youngest defenseman in NHL history to score a game-winning goal, and tied the record for the longest points streak to begin a career for a defenseman (six games). The Islanders have won three straight after losing their first three games. Collin Graf had a goal and an assist, and rookie forward Michael Misa picked up an assist for his first NHL point.

Brad Marchand collected two assists to help the Florida Panthers defeat his former club, the Boston Bruins, by a score of 4-3. During the first period, the Bruins honored Marchand with a video tribute, garnering a standing ovation from Boston fans that moved the winger to tears. Carter Verhaeghe scored with 26 seconds left for the Panthers, snapping a four-game losing skid. Pavel Zacha had a goal and an assist for the Bruins, who’ve lost five straight after winning their first three games.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Bruins held defenseman Hampus Lindholm out of this game as he continues to be hampered by a nagging lower-body injury.

An overtime goal by Jake Walman lifted the Edmonton Oilers (3-3-1) over the Ottawa Senators by a score of 3-2, snapping a three-game losing skid. Cale Makar, Jack Drury, and Martin Necas scored for the Avalanche, whose points streak has reached seven games (5-0-2).

Columbus Blue Jackets forwards Boone Jenner, Adam Fantilli, and Kent Johnson each had a goal and an assist in a 5-1 upset of the Dallas Stars. Elvis Merzlikins stopped 22 shots for the Blue Jackets, improving their record to 3-3-0. Tyler Seguin replied for the Stars, who have lost three straight after winning their first three games of the season.

NHL.COM: An overtime goal by Seth Jarvis gave the Carolina Hurricanes a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings. Jarvis became the first player in NHL history to score four game-winning goals through his club’s first five games of the season. Jordan Staal scored twice as the Hurricanes took a 3-0 lead, but the Kings rallied on goals by Trevor Moore, Andrei Kuzmenko, and Kevin Fiala.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Hurricanes are the only undefeated team this season with a 5-0-0 record, sitting first in the Eastern Conference and second in the overall standings. The Kings are winless in their last four (1-3-2).

Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon scored twice in a 4-1 win over the Boston Bruins. Artturi Lehkonen collected three assists as the Avalanche extended their season-opening points streak to six games (5-0-1), putting them atop the overall standings with 11 points. John Beecher replied for the Bruins, who have lost three straight after winning their first three games.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Bruins defenseman Hampus Lindholm returned to action after missing three games with a lower-body injury. Before the game, the Avalanche announced that forward Joel Kiviranta is sidelined indefinitely with a lower-body injury.

The Seattle Kraken nipped the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 on an overtime goal by Josh Mahura. Shane Wright, Mason Marchment, and Chandler Stephenson each had two points for the Kraken as they extended their season-opening points streak to five games (3-0-2). John Tavares scored twice for the Maple Leafs, who are 3-2-1 in their first six games.

Tavares had 621 points with the New York Islanders. He needs three goals to reach 500 for his entire career. Kraken defenseman Brandon Montour missed this game as he’s on a leave of absence to attend to a family matter. 

Mitch Marner scored his first two goals with the Vegas Golden Knights as they rolled to a 6-1 drubbing of the Calgary Flames. Mark Stone also scored twice and collected two assists, and Jack Eichel had four assists as the Golden Knights are unbeaten in their first six games (4-0-2). Flames winger Jonathan Huberdeau scored in his season debut after being sidelined by an injury.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Stone left this game midway through this game with an undisclosed injury. Meanwhile, the Flames have lost five straight since winning their season-opener against the Edmonton Oilers.

Winnipeg Jets center Mark Scheifele scored to pass Blake Wheeler as the franchise’s all-time points leader (813) in a 4-1 win over the Nashville Predators. Jonathan Toews, Nino Niederreiter, and Vladislav Namestnikov each had two points as the Jets have won four straight (4-1-0). Michael Bunting scored for the Predators, who are winless in their last three games and 2-2-2 in their first six contests.

Anders Lee tallied twice (including the winning goal) and set up another as the Isles have won two straight after dropping their first three games. Shane Pinto scored his league-leading seventh goal for the Senators, who have lost four of their first six games.

The New Jersey Devils picked up their fourth straight victory (4-1-0)with a 5-3 win over the Edmonton Oilers, handing the latter their third loss in their first five contests (2-2-1). Jack Hughes had two goals and an assist, and Nico Hischier collected two assists for the Devils. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored twice and Connor McDavid had two helpers for the Oilers.

Buffalo Sabres goaltender Alex Lyon stopped 32 shots to shut out the Florida Panthers 3-0, giving his club their second straight win after dropping their first three games of the season. Josh Doan scored twice and Owen Power netted his first of the season. Sergei Bobrovsky made 28 saves for the Panthers, who have dropped four in a row after winning their first three of the season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Panthers winger Brad Marchand received two minor penalties in the second period after tangling with Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin. He took Dahlin’s helmet with him to the penalty box, where he tore off the straps and threw them and the helmet onto the ice.

Panthers defenseman Niko Mikkola and Sabres blueliner Jacob Bryson left this game with upper-body injuries. There was no immediate word on their conditions.

The New York Rangers overcame an early 2-0 deficit to down the Montreal Canadiens 4-3, snapping the latter’s four-game win streak (4-2-0). Artemi Panarin led the way with a goal and three assists for the Rangers, who ended a three-game winless skid and are 3-3-1 on the season. Nick Suzuki and Noah Dobson each scored their first goals of the season for the Canadiens.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Canadiens were without three roster regulars for this game. Defenseman Kaiden Guhle is sidelined for four to six weeks with a lower-body injury, while forwards Patrik Laine and Kirby Dach are day-to-day with lower-body injuries.

An overtime goal by Noah Cates lifted the Philadelphia Flyers to a 2-1 win over the Minnesota Wild, leaving the latter winless in their last three and with a 2-3-1 record on the season. Owen Tippett also scored for the Flyers, who are 2-2-1. Vladimir Tarasenko scored his first of the season for the Wild.

The St. Louis Blues picked up their first home win of the season by holding off the Dallas Stars 3-1. Jordan Kyrou scored his first of the season while teammates Jimmy Snuggerud and Pius Suter also scored for the Blues (3-2-0). Mikko Rantanen replied for the Stars, who have lost two straight after winning their first three games.

Columbus Blue Jackets winger Kirill Marchenko scored early in the third period to snap a 2-2 tie as his club defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2, leaving the latter with a record of 1-3-2 in their first seven games of the season. Kent Johnson and Damon Severson also scored for the 2-3-0 Blue Jackets. Ryan McDonagh and Anthony Cirelli tallied for the Lightning.

The Pittsburgh Penguins got a 31-save shutout from Tristan Jarry to blank the San Jose Sharks 3-0. Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin each had a goal and an assist for the 4-2-0 Penguins. Alex Nedeljkovic made 24 saves for the Sharks, who remain winless through five games (0-3-2).

In today’s NHL Rumor Mill: the Devils hope to re-sign Jacob Markstrom, Rangers winger Brennan Othmann is drawing some interest, and the latest on the Maple Leafs.

DEVILS TALKING CONTRACT WITH MARKSTROM

TSN: Darren Dreger reports the New Jersey Devils have had contract extension talks with the representatives for goaltender Jacob Markstrom.

The 35-year-old goaltender is in the final season of a six-year contract with an average annual value of $6 million. He is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent next July.

Dreger indicated the discussions were “healthy”, adding that negotiations are expected to continue. There is a mutual interest from both sides to get something done.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: There was a recent rumor claiming the Devils offered Markstrom an extension with a slightly lower AAV of $5 million. However, there’s been no confirmation about that.

Markstrom could draw a lot of attention if he goes to market next summer. Apart from himself, there aren’t many experienced starting goalies who could be available. They include Florida’s aging Sergei Bobrovsky, Carolina’s oft-injured Frederik Andersen, and Edmonton’s inconsistent Stuart Skinner.

RANGERS COULD CONSIDER MOVING OTHMANN

SPORTSNET: Elliotte Friedman reports New York Rangers prospect winger Brennan Othmann is garnering some interest in the trade market. The 22-year-old was sent down to their AHL affiliate in Hartford, and there have been conversations with other clubs about his future.

Friedman indicates the Rangers have a lot of wingers. Othmann might benefit from a change of scenery.

THE ATHLETIC: Vincent Z. Mercogliano cited a league source claiming the Rangers are open to moving Othmann. There’s been no trade request from the young winger, but both sides feel he might benefit from a fresh start elsewhere.

Rangers general manager Chris Drury is believed to be gauging interest in Othmann, but he’s not in a rush to move him. It’s uncertain what type of return Drury would want.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Othmann was the Rangers’ first-round pick (16th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft. He’s had 25 games with the Blueshirts since 2023-24, collecting two assists.

Drury has been steadily reshaping the Rangers’ roster since last December. Othmann would be the latest of several players to be shipped out in recent months. Given the young winger’s struggles, he might not fetch much of a return unless he’s included in a package deal.

LEAFS MANAGEMENT HAS THE GREEN LIGHT TO MAKE A MAJOR MOVE IF POSSIBLE

TSN: Pierre LeBrun reports that Keith Pelley, the CEO and president of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), feels that it’s “go time” for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

With the salary cap rising and the Maple Leafs having some cap flexibility, LeBrun believes Pelley has given the green light to general manager Brad Treliving to “take a swing” at a deal sometime before the March 6 trade deadline.

Treliving remains in the market for a top-six forward. Given the average age of the Leafs roster, there’s a sense of urgency to get over the hump this season.

LeBrun believes they’ll have to get creative given their limited trade assets. They don’t have a first-round pick in the 2026 or 2027 NHL Drafts.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It’ll be interesting to see how creative Treliving can get to land that elusive top-six forward before the trade deadline. And no, shopping Nick Robertson won’t be enough to get it done.

NHL.COM: Winnipeg Jets center Mark Scheifele scored two goals in a 5-2 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers, tying former teammate Blake Wheeler for the Jets 2.0 franchise points record with 812. Kyle Connor collected two assists for the Jets, who extended their win streak to three games. Flyers winger Matvei Michkov scored his first of the season as his club has dropped three of its first four games (1-2-1).

An overtime goal by Auston Matthews lifted the Toronto Maple Leafs over the New York Rangers 2-1. Matthews tied Mats Sundin for the most regular-season overtime goals (14) in Leafs history. William Nylander also scored for the Leafs, who’ve won three of their first five games. Juuso Parssinen replied for the Rangers, who dropped their third straight contests.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Sportsnet’s Luke Fox reports Maple Leafs goaltender Anthony Stolarz believes there should be a rule change when a goalie loses his mask during play.

Under NHL rules, play can continue against a goalie who is not wearing a mask if a scoring chance is imminent. Stolarz’s mask was knocked off by a shot from Rangers forward Matt Rempe, but the Rangers still controlled the play, forcing the Leafs’ goalie to make a save without his mask before a stoppage in play.

Montreal Canadiens winger Cole Caufield scored the tying goal with 20 seconds remaining in the third period and the winning goal in the final seconds of overtime for a 3-2 win over the Nashville Predators. Caufield tied Howie Morenz for the most regular-season overtime goals in franchise history with 10. Oliver Kapanen also scored for the Canadiens, who have won four of their last five to sit in first place in the Atlantic Division. Steven Stamkos and Nick Perbix scored for the Predators, who are 2-2-1 to open the season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Caufield’s tying goal came after teammate Lane Hutson blocked an attempt at an empty-net goal by Jonathan Marchessault. Hutson quickly fired a long pass to Caufield, and the rest is history.

The Vegas Golden Knights held off the Boston Bruins 6-5, extending their season-opening points streak to five games (3-0-2). William Karlsson scored twice, Mark Stone had three assists, and Jack Eichel and Pavel Dorofeyev picked up two points for the Golden Knights. Michael Eyssimont and Sean Kuraly each had two points for the Bruins, who’ve dropped two straight after winning their first three games.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Dorofeyev is tied with Ottawa Senators center Shane Pinto for the most goals this season with six. Stone leads all skaters with nine assists, and Eichel is the points leader with 11. Golden Knights forward Brett Howden and defenseman Noah Hanifin missed this game due to injuries.

Earlier in the day, the Golden Knights announced the signing of free-agent goaltender Carter Hart to a professional tryout offer.

A hat trick by Bo Horvat powered the New York Islanders to their first win of the season (1-3-0) by doubling up the Edmonton Oilers 4-2. Mathew Bazal had a goal and an assist, and David Rittich stopped 31 shots for the Islanders. Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored for the Oilers.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It was a horrible game for Oilers defenseman Evan Bouchard. His defensive mistakes led to breakaway goals by Barzal and Horvat.

Shootout goals by Tim Stutzle and Shane Pinto lifted the Ottawa Senators over the Seattle Kraken 4-3. Pinto also scored in regulation to tie Pavel Dorofeyev with his league-leading sixth goal, while Dylan Cozens tied the game late in regulation. Chandler Stephenson tallied twice for the Kraken, who are 2-0-2 in their first four games.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Earlier in the day, the Senators announced team captain Brady Tkachuk underwent surgery on his injured hand. He is expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks.

Kraken forward Frederick Gaudreau left the game after the second period with an undisclosed injury.

The New Jersey Devils defeated the Florida Panthers 3-1, handing the defending Stanley Cup champions their third straight loss after they opened the season with three straight wins. Timo Meier had a goal and an assist while Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier also scored for the Devils, who have won three straight. Evan Rodrigues scored for the Panthers.

Vancouver Canucks defenseman Quinn Hughes and winger Conor Garland each had a goal and an assist as they overcame a 2-0 deficit for a 5-3 upset of the Dallas Stars. Thatcher Demko made 28 saves for the Canucks, who are 2-2-0 to start the season. Jason Robertson had two assists for the Stars, who suffered their first loss after opening the season with three straight wins.

The Colorado Avalanche extended their season-opening points streak to five games (4-0-1) by dropping the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-1, leaving them with one win in their first four games. Valeri Nichushkin tallied twice, and Cale Makar had a goal and an assist. Elvis Merzlikins turned aside 32 shots for the Blue Jackets.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Earlier in the day, Cam Atkinson signed a one-day contract with the Blue Jackets and officially announced his retirement. The 36-year-old forward spent 10 of his 13-season NHL career with the Blue Jackets. In 809 regular-season games with Columbus, Philadelphia Flyers, and Tampa Bay Lightning from 2011-12 to 2024-25, Atkinson had 253 goals and 236 assists for 489 points. He also had 26 points in 35 playoff games.

Carolina Hurricanes forward Seth Jarvis scored two goals and set up another in a 4-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks. Shayne Gostisbehere had three assists, and Frederik Andersen stopped 23 shots for the Hurricanes, who remain undefeated to start the season (4-0-0). Leo Carlsson replied for the Ducks (2-2-0).

The Pittsburgh Penguins overcame a 2-0 deficit to upset the Los Angeles Kings 4-2. Filip Hallander’s first NHL goal was the game-winner, and Erik Karlsson collected two assists for the 3-2-0 Penguins. Warren Foegele and Kevin Fiala scored for the Kings, who’ve dropped four of their last five contests (1-3-1).
