The Flames are seeking more offense, teams are calling about Blue Jackets forward Yegor Chinakhov, plus updates on the Canucks’ search for a center, the asking price for Rangers winger Brennan Othmann, and more in today’s NHL Rumor Mill.

FLAMES SHOPPING FOR SCORING PUNCH

TSN: Pierre LeBrun reports the Calgary Flames are frustrated over their lack of production. They’re currently last in the league, averaging 1.5 goals per game.

General manager Craig Conroy is exploring the trade market in search of offensive help. However, it’s still very early in the season, and teams typically don’t make those kinds of moves yet.

THE ATHLETIC: LeBrun also believes the Flames could become sellers if they don’t reverse their fortunes soon.

Rasmus Andersson would be their biggest trade chip. The 28-year-old defenseman is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent next summer, and there’s no indication he and the Flames are any closer to a contract extension.

Nazem Kadri could also be in demand. However, the 35-year-old center has a full no-movement clause until July 1, when it reverts to a 13-team no-trade list. So far, there’s no evidence that Kadri wants out of Calgary.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Unless Conroy can find a worthwhile deal to bolster his club’s scoring, he’ll become a seller later in the season. It won’t happen now because it’s unlikely he’ll find suitable returns for Andersson and Kadri (if he’s willing to move) at this point in the season.

BLUE JACKETS GETTING CALLS ABOUT YEGOR CHINAKHOV

TSN: Pierre LeBrun reports the Columbus Blue Jackets are getting more calls about Yegor Chinakhov. The 24-year-old forward has played only three games this season, all of those on their fourth line.

Chinakhov hasn’t rescinded the trade request that he made this summer after being a healthy scratch for most of the Blue Jackets’ stretch run last season.

LeBrun said the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers, Buffalo Sabres, and Calgary Flames are among the clubs believed to have called or expected to check in. However, the Jackets are seeking a player in return rather than draft picks and prospects.

THE ATHLETIC: LeBrun noted the Maple Leafs are still trying to sort out Nick Robertson’s role, while New York Rangers winger Brennan Othmann is out there in the trade market. He believes the Jackets, Leafs, and Rangers could help each other out at some point.

SPORTSNET: Elliotte Friedman reported the Maple Leafs are investigating options for Robertson. He claimed they made a pitch for Chinkhov this summer, but it wasn’t to the Blue Jackets’ liking.

TIDBITS FROM THE LATEST “32 THOUGHTS” COLUMN

SPORTSNET: Elliotte Friedman believes contract extension talks between the Los Angeles Kings and Adrian Kempe will resume soon…The Vancouver Canucks are searching for a center, but they don’t want to part with their 2026 first-round pick.

The San Jose Sharks are carrying nine defensemen and could move one of them. The Edmonton Oilers could also move a blueliner. The Detroit Red Wings have rearguard Erik Gustafsson in the AHL, and have some forwards who might need a change of scenery.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: No, the Sharks aren’t at the stage yet where they will move UFA-eligible defenseman Mario Ferraro…If the Oilers move a defenseman, it will be Ty Emberson, Troy Stecher, or Alec Regula…The forwards Friedman was referring to could be those with less than two years left on their contract. They included Jonatan Berggren and Elmer Soderblom.

The Blackhawks remain open to trade offers for winger Lukas Reichel…The Rangers have requested good AHL prospects in exchange for Brennan Othmann…Friedman believes that if the Ottawa Senators and Shane Pinto agree to a contract extension, it’ll likely be a three-year deal.

THE LATEST SABRES SPECULATION

DAILY FACEOFF: Anthony Di Marco examined who stays or goes if the Buffalo Sabres end up rebuilding their roster, should they extend their league-record playoff drought, currently at 14 seasons.

Among their forwards, Di Marco believes there isn’t much outside of Tage Thompson and winger Alex Tuch that would fetch a major return. Young forwards Zach Benson, Jiri Kulich, and Jack Quinn have potential, but they aren’t proven commodities.

The defense is a different story, where Rasmus Dahlin, Owen Power, and Bowen Byram would garner plenty of interest in the trade market. Of the three, Dahlin would fetch a king’s ransom given his status among the league’s elite blueliners.

NEW JERSEY HOCKEY NOW: Zach Berman suggested the Devils target Thompson, citing speculation that the 27-year-old forward could be leaning toward asking out of Buffalo.

If Thompson becomes available, Berman believes Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald should go all-in to land him. He suggested that no one, other than the Hughes brothers, Nico Hischier, Jesper Bratt, and Timo Meier, should be considered untouchable.

SPORTSNET: Player agent Brian Bartlett said his client, Alex Tuch, has paused contract negotiations with the Sabres. Bartlett indicated they weren’t able to get a deal done during the offseason, and that things are on the back burner for now.

Tuch, 29, is among the notable forwards eligible for unrestricted free-agent status next summer. Bartlett indicated that there had been good, consistent communication with Sabres management, adding that his client informed them that he was happy to stay in Buffalo.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Sabres’ 1-3-0 start has already made them a hot topic for trade conjecture. If they don’t snap out of this early-season funk, it would lead to significant changes in the front office and behind the bench, subsequently leading to roster changes if things don’t improve.

Thompson, Tuch, Dahlin, Power, and Byram will definitely draw the most attention if the Sabres decide to tear down the roster and rebuild again.

Tuch’s UFA status for next summer makes him the most obvious trade candidate, which is why he’s already surfaced in media trade chatter. However, he could be joined by one or more of the other core players if any of them finally reach the limit of their patience with the club’s current direction.

UPDATE ON LEAFS WINGER NICK ROBERTSON

THE ATHLETIC: Jonas Siegel and Chris Johnston noted the recent trade speculation swirling around Toronto Maple Leafs winger Nick Robertson.

Siegel and Johnston believe the Pittsburgh Penguins and Columbus Blue Jackets as potential trade destinations.

The Penguins are rebuilding and targeting players in Robertson’s age group, plus there’s his connection with Penguins general manager (and former Leafs GM) Kyle Dubas. Columbus doesn’t have the same apparent need for a scoring winger, but they believe the Blue Jackets should still call.

TORONTO SUN: Terry Koshan also noted Robertson’s return to the rumor mill. However, he believes the Leafs are better off hanging onto him, citing his goal-scoring potential despite his early-season drought. Trading him for a draft pick would free up his $1.85 million salary for this season, but Koshan feels that money is better spent on keeping him.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Leafs likely see Robertson as a depth forward worth retaining in case injuries strike the lineup. Unless they go into a tailspin and drop out of playoff contention, which is unlikely, trading him for a draft pick doesn’t improve their roster.

The Blue Jackets aren’t a suitable destination for Robertson unless injuries deplete the ranks of their wingers this season. Seigel and Johnston noted that Yegor Chinakhov can’t crack the Jackets roster, so it’s unlikely Robertson would fare better.

FLAMES SEEK BLUELINE HELP

DAILY FACEOFF‘s Anthony Di Marco stated that the Calgary Flames are looking for “a young, left-shot defenseman with size.” He pointed out that they have “too many bodies on 1-way deals and want to move some out.”

Di Marco heard that the Flames would like to move Jake Bean and Daniil Miromanov. He’s heard they like Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Egor Zamula, who played his junior hockey in Calgary.

In today’s NHL Rumor Mill: the latest on Adrian Kempe’s contract talks with the Kings, a suggested trade target for the Sabres, what’s next for the Canadiens, and the Nick Robertson trade rumors return.

THE LATEST ON ADRIAN KEMPE’S CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS

SPORTSNET: Elliotte Friedman reports Adrian Kempe wants to remain with the Los Angeles Kings. The 28-year-old winger is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent next July.

Friedman said that initial contract discussions between the Kings and Kempe’s camp had been about an average annual salary between $9 million and $10 million. However, the recent signings of notable stars like Minnesota’s Kirill Kaprizov and Winnipeg’s Kyle Connor could push that price higher.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Kings will have to pony up if they want to keep Kempe in the fold, perhaps between $10.5 million and $11.5 million on a long-term deal. Unless they intend to rebuild, they can’t risk losing their leading scorer, especially with Anze Kopitar retiring at the end of this season.

SHOULD THE SABRES PURSUE RICKARD RAKELL?

THE ATHLETIC: Matthew Fairburn recently looked at several options for the Buffalo Sabres to replace sidelined center Josh Norris.

The trade route is one option. Fairburn suggested Rickard Rakell of the Pittsburgh Penguins as a trade target. The 32-year-old has spent much of his career as a winger but can play center and could be a decent middle-six addition.

Rakell is signed through 2027-28 with an AAV of $5 million. He also carries an eight-team no-trade list, which could be a problem for the Sabres.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Rakell doesn’t appear to be in any hurry to leave the Penguins. Given the Sabres’ long-time woes, they’re likely among the teams on his no-trade list.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE CANADIENS AFTER RE-SIGNING LANE HUTSON?

TSN: Pierre LeBrun reports the Montreal Canadiens’ next priority is re-signing Mike Matheson. The 31-year-old defenseman is UFA-eligible next July.

LeBrun said Canadiens management wants to re-sign Matheson, and the veteran blueliner and his agent are interested in having that discussion. The contract term will be the issue, as he doesn’t want a short-term deal. LeBrun speculates the sweet spot could be a four or five-year contract. Finding the right AAV will also be a factor.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Sportsnet’s Eric Engels reports Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis and several Habs, including team captain Nick Suzuki, think highly of Matheson’s play. He’s become more comfortable in his role as a big-minute blueliner, especially now that he’s paired with offseason addition Noah Dobson.

Matheson is finishing an eight-year contract with an AAV of $4.875 million. The Canadiens have the cap space to sign him to a four or five-year contract with an AAV of $6.5 million to $7 million. Given his value to the Habs, it won’t be surprising if that’s what he gets from them.

THE NICK ROBERTSON TRADE RUMORS HAVE RETURNED

TSN: Darren Dreger reports Nick Robertson has resurfaced in the rumor mill. He said that Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has recently spoken with clubs that may have some interest in the 24-year-old forward.

Dreger said Robertson is pushing for a larger role with the Maple Leafs. However, the club’s depth has put him in a tough spot.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: We’ve heard the same thing about Robertson for the past two years. Either the Maple Leafs have set an unreasonably high asking price, or the interest in him from some other clubs is lukewarm. We’ll see what happens as the season unfolds.

Check out the latest on the Rangers and Maple Leafs in today’s NHL Rumor Mill.

THE ATHLETIC: Peter Baugh and Vincent Z. Mercogliano believe the New York Rangers will attempt to take a big swing in next summer’s free-agent market.

By that point, the Rangers are projected to have more salary-cap space and roster flexibility than they’ve had for some time. Several high-end stars, including Edmonton’s Connor McDavid, Vegas’ Jack Eichel, and Minnesota’s Kirill Kaprizov, could be available.

That’s why they’re not in a rush to re-sign Artemi Panarin, who is UFA-eligible next July. They want to keep their options open for as long as possible to size up the market.

The Rangers could have over $20 million available after re-signing restricted free agents like Brendan Schneider and adding a couple of depth pieces and a backup goalie. They could free up more cap room by peddling Alexis Lafreniere or Vincent Trocheck.

If those potential big-name UFAs become unavailable, the Rangers could use that cap flexibility to spread it out among multiple impact players in the market.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Baugh and Mercogliano aren’t saying Lafreniere or Trocheck will be traded. They’re suggesting they could be moved if the Rangers need more cap room to sign a UFA superstar. Those players could also stay put if they play well this season.

Pursuing multiple players via free agency doesn’t guarantee success. The Rangers attempted to spend their way into Stanley Cup contention between 1997-98 and 2003-04, but missed the playoffs for seven straight years.

The Nashville Predators recently learned that lesson the hard way. They made a big splash in last year’s free-agent market, signing Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault, and Brady Skjei. Projected by some observers to be a possible Stanley Cup contender, they finished near the bottom of the standings.

LEAFS NATION: Michael Mazzei cited NHL insider Chris Johnston saying the Toronto Maple Leafs are no longer as interested in free-agent forward Jack Roslovic as they once were.

Johnston no longer considers the 28-year-old Roslovic a fit for the Leafs, citing the depth among their forward lines.

According to Johnston, Roslovic received a couple of contract offers between two and three years in length with average annual values between $3.5 million and $3.75 million. He rejected those offers in the hope that he’d receive better ones, but they never materialized. He may have to pivot toward a one-year “prove it” contract and hope to set himself up for a better payday next summer.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Being the best player still available in what was a thin unrestricted free-agent market didn’t pan out so well for Roslovic.

Unrestricted free agency can be lucrative for some players due to their exceptional talent or impressive body of work. However, waiting too long for better offers can backfire, leaving a player scrambling to find a contract worth much less than what they could’ve had earlier in the summer.

THE ATHLETIC: Jonas Siegel recently examined three possible paths for Maple Leafs winger Nick Robertson. The most likely is a trade.

Robertson, 24, isn’t especially thrilled to be back with the Leafs in his current situation. It’s uncertain if he’ll receive regular playing time, and Siegel argues it wouldn’t make sense for the player or the team to keep him around in that situation.

Siegel wondered if there’s a team out there willing to take on Robertson and his $1.85 million cap hit for this season, with restricted free agency and possible arbitration ahead next summer.

“If that team is out there, though, why wasn’t Robertson dealt already?”

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Probably for the same reason Robertson wasn’t dealt last year around this time after requesting a trade early in the 2024 offseason: he’s not as valuable as some observers think he is.

Robertson has a decent scoring touch, and he’s worked to improve his overall game, but he hasn’t elevated his performance to the level where he’s a reliable top-six forward. And if he were a dependable scoring winger, there wouldn’t be any question about his role or his future with the Leafs.

Updates on the Wild’s Kirill Kaprizov, the Rangers’ Artemi Panarin, and the Jets’ Kyle Connor, plus the latest Maple Leafs’ speculation in today’s NHL Rumor Mill.

THE LATEST ON KAPRIZOV’S CONTRACT SITUATION

TSN: Pierre LeBrun reports the Minnesota Wild’s eight-year, $128 million contract offer to Kirill Kaprizov remains on the table despite the winger rejecting the proposal last week.

He also indicated that the Wild are definitely not engaged in trade discussions with other teams regarding Kaprizov. Their only focus is re-signing him as they believe the winger wants to stay in Minnesota.

Kaprizov has not been heard from since rejecting the offer. He will meet the media when training camp opens on Thursday, as will general manager Bill Guerin.

LeBrun also mentioned that the vibes in these negotiations are not cordial compared to those with the Edmonton Oilers and Connor McDavid. “This is a little more edgy, let’s just say, between Kaprizov’s agent and Guerin,” Lebrun said. “I think last week was very emotional, and it’s not clear what the endgame here is.”

The Wild believe they made an “unbelievable offer” of eight years with an average annual value of $16 million. LeBrun isn’t certain how far they might have to move off that, but they may have to to get a deal done.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Bleacher Report’s Frank Seravalli noted that there’s been some speculation linking Kaprizov to the New York Rangers or the Chicago Blackhawks. However, he indicated that there hasn’t been as much trade talk about the winger as some suggest. Seravalli stated that he’s seen little indication from the Kaprizov camp that the superstar winger wants to play elsewhere.

WILL THE RANGERS RE-SIGN PANARIN?

THE ATHLETIC: Peter Baugh and Vincent Z. Mercogliano wondered what’s next for Artemi Panarin in his contract year. The 33-year-old New York Rangers winger’s point-per-game rate dipped to its lowest since 2018-19, his last season with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

It’s believed Rangers GM Chris Drury is in no rush to decide how aggressively he’ll pursue an extension for Panarin. The club has cap flexibility, but they’re closely monitoring some of the big-name players who could become UFAs next summer, like the Wild’s Kirill Kaprizov.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Mercogliano recently speculated about the possibility of the Rangers pursuing Kaprizov if he becomes available by the March 2026 trade deadline. He suggested including winger Alexis Lafreniere in the deal, clearing his $7.45 million cap hit from their books. It would give the Rangers over $37 million in cap space, more than enough to sign Kaprizov and perhaps retain Panarin on a reduced salary.

KYLE CONNOR AND THE JETS ARE TALKING ABOUT AN EXTENSION

TSN: Darren Dreger reports there is an open line of communication between Kyle Connor and the Winnipeg Jets, who have made re-signing the 28-year-old winger a priority.

“I don’t doubt for a second that they will extend Kyle Connor,” Dreger said. He went on to say that the winger has been an important part of the club’s past, present, and future. There is no timeline for getting a deal done.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Like Kaprizov, Connor is eligible for unrestricted free-agent status next July.

Some folks wondered if the Jets risk losing Connor after Nikolaj Ehlers departed for the Carolina Hurricanes as a free agent in July. However, they re-signed core players Connor Hellebuyck and Mark Scheifele in 2023.

Connor is just as important as Hellebuyck and Scheifele, so don’t be surprised if he’s re-signed to a lucrative new contract.

THE LATEST ON THE MAPLE LEAFS

TORONTO SUN: Terry Koshan believes re-signing goaltender Anthony Stolarz should be the Maple Leafs’ priority. He anticipates the 31-year-old will get a nice raise over his current $2.5 million AAV after leading the league in save percentage last year.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: TSN’s Darren Dreger reports the two sides are working on a multi-year extension. He considers Kevin Lankinen’s contract with the Vancouver Canucks (five years, $4.5 million AAV) as a comparable.

Koshan anticipates Leafs GM Brad Treliving could move a depth forward in a cost-cutting trade before the start of the regular season. Calle Jarnkrok, David Kampf, or Nick Robertson are the likely candidates.

A suggested trade for the Maple Leafs and Penguins, and speculation the Kings considered shopping Brandt Clarke in the Sunday NHL Rumor Roundup.

THE LEAFS NATION: cited former Toronto Maple Leafs player Jay Rosehill saying he’d welcome a trade that would have the Leafs ship defenseman Morgan Rielly and winger Nick Robertson to the Pittsburgh Penguins for puck-moving blueliner Erik Karlsson.

Rosehill made his comments about the mock trade during his Aug. 21 appearance on the “Leafs Morning Take” podcast. He believes they’re trying to move Nick Robertson because he doesn’t think there’s a fit for the winger on their roster. Rosehill also noted that Rielly’s performance has stalled, and he no longer produces as he used to.

Despite the 35-year-old Karlsson’s age, Rosehill believes the former Norris Trophy winner would still have upside quarterbacking the Leafs’ power play.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: You can tell we’re still mired in the dog days of a quiet offseason when a mock trade starts making the rounds in the rumor mill.

Thankfully, September is fast approaching, and so is the start of training camp. We should soon start seeing some movement in the trade market, and hopefully some more realistic trade rumors once the pundits all return from their vacations.

As for this mock trade, Pittsburgh would have to retain $3 million of their $10 million share of Karlsson’s $11.5 million average annual value through 2026-27 to make the dollars fit for the Leafs. Regardless, the Penguins likely won’t take on the remaining four years of Rielly’s contract ($7.5 million AAV) just to get the final two years of Karlsson’s deal off their books, especially when it appears Rielly’s performance is declining.

THE HOCKEY NEWS: Jesse Courville-Lynch cited Michael Russo of The Athletic saying the Los Angeles Kings considered trading defenseman Brandt Clarke.

Russo made those comments during a recent appearance on the “DFO Rundown” podcast. The 22-year-old Clarke had 33 points last season, which was his first full NHL campaign. According to Russo, there were points during this offseason when it felt like the Kings would consider moving Clarke. However, he believes general manager Ken Holland wants to “get his eyes on him” before making a major move like that.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Kings lost defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov to the New York Rangers through free agency and traded blueliner Jordan Spence to the Ottawa Senators. They added Cody Ceci and Brian Dumoulin via free agency, two moves that were greeted with criticism.

Some observers suggest that Clarke could be traded for a return that bolsters their forward depth. However, moving him could further deplete their blueline, making life miserable for their goaltenders.
