NHL Morning Coffee Headlines – December 15, 2024

Nathan MacKinnon is the first to reach 50 points this season, Leon Draisaitl extends his multi-point streak, David Pastrnak reaches a scoring milestone, and more from a busy Saturday night of action in today’s NHL Morning Coffee Headlines.

NHL.COM: Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon became the first player to reach 50 points this season in a 5-2 victory over the Nashville Predators. MacKinnon scored two goals and collected an assist, Artturi Lehkonen tallied twice and Mackenzie Blackwood made 37 saves in his debut with the Avalanche. Steven Stamkos and Luke Evangelista replied for the Predators, who’ve dropped nine of their last 10 games.

The Edmonton Oilers picked up their fifth straight win by defeating the Vegas Golden Knights 6-3. Leon Draisaitl netted his league-leading 22nd goal and added two assists to extend his multipoint streak to five games and Stuart Skinner made 38 saves for the win. Golden Knights defenseman Noah Hanifin had two assists.

Boston Bruins winger David Pastrnak had a goal and three assists in a 5-1 drubbing of the Vancouver Canucks. Pavel Zacha had a goal and an assist for the Bruins. Max Sasson tallied for the Canucks, who’ve lost three of their last four contests.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Pastrnak reached the 400-assist milestone in this game. Earlier in the day, the Bruins claimed forward Oliver Wahlstrom off waivers from the New York Islanders.

Los Angeles Kings forwards Adrian Kempe, Quinton Byfield, Warren Foegele and Alex Turcotte each had a goal and an assist as they downed the New York Rangers 5-1. Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin got the hook in the second period after giving up five goals on 21 shots as the Kings picked up their seventh win in their last eight games. Filip Chytil scored for the Rangers, who’ve dropped nine of their last 12 games.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Former Rangers coach Mike Keenan told RG.Org that he believes the Rangers are built for success with the right goalie in Shesterkin to lead them to the Stanley Cup. Their performance in recent weeks suggests otherwise, so I’ll have more about the Rangers in today’s Sunday Rumor Roundup.

Four goals in the third period powered the New Jersey Devils to a 4-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. Dawson Mercer and Timo Meier each had a goal and an assist for the Devils. Jason Dickinson had the Blackhawks’ only goal.

Minnesota Wild winger Kirill Kaprizov scored twice to reach the 20-goal plateau as his club rolled to a 4-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers. Mats Zuccarello and Jonas Brodin each collected an assist as they returned to the lineup. Travis Sanheim scored for the Flyers.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Wild called up goalie Jesper Wallstedt on an emergency basis and placed forward Jakub Lauko on injured reserve.

An overtime goal by Brady Tkachuk lifted the Ottawa Senators over the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2. Thomas Chabot had a goal and an assist and Linus Ullmark got the win with a 25-save effort as a surprise starter after Anton Forsberg was injured in the warmup. Blake Lizotte and Kris Letang scored for the Penguins, who lost defenseman Marcus Pettersson in the first period to a lower-body injury. There was no postgame update about his condition.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The win vaulted the Senators over the Flyers into the final Eastern Conference wild-card spot. They’ve won seven of their last 10 games.

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Jeff Petry tallied twice as his club doubled up the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2. Wings netminder Ville Husso stopped 23 shots for his first win of the season. Leafs winger Mitch Marner had two assists for the Leafs, who welcomed back winger Bobby McMann from his seven-game absence as he recovered from a lower-body injury.

Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson scored two goals in a 4-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres, handing the latter their ninth straight loss (0-6-3). Dylan Strome snapped a 2-2 tie and John Carlson collected three assists for the Capitals, who sit in first place in the Eastern Conference standings with 43 points.

The Anaheim Ducks got two goals and an assist from Alex Killorn (including the winning goal in overtime) to nip the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-3. John Gibson kicked out 39 shots and Jackson LaCombe had a goal and an assist for the Ducks. Kirill Marchenko, Cole Sillinger and James van Riemsdyk replied for the Blue Jackets, who’ve lost six of their last seven games (1-4-2).

An overtime goal by Matt Duchene lifted the Dallas Stars over the St. Louis Blues by a score of 2-1. Jason Robertson had a goal and an assist for the Stars while Jordan Kyrou scored for the Blues, who’ve lost three of their last four.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Cam Fowler wasted no time joining the Blues. Traded earlier in the day from the Ducks, the defenseman hopped a plane to Dallas and was in the lineup for this contest, averaging over 17 minutes of ice time. You can read my take on his trade by following this link.

Winnipeg Jets forwards Kyle Connor and Gabriel Vilardi each had a goal and an assist in a 4-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens. Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck stopped 26 shots for the victory as his club regained first place in the overall standings with 45 points. Canadiens rookie Lane Hutson scored his first NHL goal as his club lost for the third time in their last four outings.

Calgary Flames rookie goalie Dustin Wolf made 32 saves for his second shutout of the season to blank the Florida Panther 3-0. Mikael Backlund had a goal and an assist while Nazem Kadri and Blake Coleman also scored as the Flames picked up their third win in their last 10 games. Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov missed this game due to illness.

A power-play goal by Clayton Keller with 44 seconds remaining in the third period lifted his team to a 4-3 win over the San Jose Sharks. Keller, Nick Schmaltz, and Mikhail Sergachev each finished with two points for Utah HC (33 points), putting them within two points of the final Western Conference wild-card berth. Fabian Zetterlund had a goal and an assist and Vitek Vanecek stopped 36 shots for the Sharks.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Sharks activated Will Smith off injured reserve for this game and placed forward Klim Kostin on IR.

Tampa Bay Lightning forward Brandon Hagel scored twice to down the Seattle Kraken 5-1. Jake Guentzel had a goal and an assist to extend his points streak to six games while Brayden Point and Nikita Kucherov each collected two points. Brandon Montour scored for the Kraken.

GAME RECAPS

NHL.COM: The Detroit Red Wings overcame a 5-3 deficit to defeat the Buffalo Sabres 6-5 on a shootout goal by Dylan Larkin. Andrew Copp scored two goals, Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider had a goal and an assist each, and Sebastian Cossa picked up the win in his first NHL game after Ville Husso got the hook after giving up three goals on seven shots. Buffalo winger Jason Zucker tallied twice and picked up an assist.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Wings snapped a five-game winless skid (0-3-2) while the Sabres are 0-4-3 in their last seven contests. Both clubs began this season hoping to be postseason contenders but find themselves near the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings with 26 points in 28 games. The Wings risk extending their playoff drought to nine seasons while the Sabres’ postseason drought could reach 14 years.

Chicago Blackhawks winger Taylor Hall snapped a 1-1 tie in the second period as his club held on to upset the New York Rangers 2-1. Hall finished with two points as he assisted on Tyler Bertuzzi’s game-opening goal. Will Cuylle netted a shorthanded goal for the Rangers. The Blackhawks ended a five-game losing skid while the Rangers have won only twice in their last 10 games.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: This was the first NHL win for Blackhawks interim coach Anders Sorensen. Meanwhile, Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette faces growing criticism for his team’s recent struggles.

The Montreal Canadiens downed the Anaheim Ducks 3-2 on shootout goals by Patrik Laine and Cole Caufield. Laine and Kirby Dach scored in regulation and Samuel Montembeault stopped 27 shots for the Canadiens. Troy Terry netted both goals for the Ducks.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Laine’s off to a hot start with the Canadiens, collecting four points in as many games. Meanwhile, Jacob Trouba debuted with the Ducks following his trade by the Rangers on Friday, playing with a greater sense of urgency than in his final games in New York.

HEADLINES

NHL.COM: Florida Panthers winger Matthew Tkachuk, Tampa Bay Lightning center Brayden Point, and Vegas Golden Knights goaltender Adin Hill are the NHL’s three stars for the week ending Dec. 8, 2024.

TSN: Pierre LeBrun reports Ottawa Senators owner Michael Andlauer is fed up with rejecting trade rumors about team captain Brady Tkachuk.

The latest was a recent report by Larry Brooks of the New York Post claiming the Rangers made Tkachuk their primary trade target. Andlauer said that report could be considered “soft tampering” if Brooks’ reporting came from a source within an NHL team.

Andlauer said this was the third separate occasion in his year as Senators owner “where there’s been fires to put out”, referring to the Tkachuk trade rumors. “I can tell you 100 percent there’s never actually been an ounce of discussion about Brady Tkachuk being anything other than an Ottawa Senator.”

The Rangers issued a statement to LeBrun in response to Andlauer’s comments rejecting any notion of tampering. “This is an irresponsible accusation and we defer to the commissioner’s office.”

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I’ll have more about this in today’s NHL Rumors update.

THE ATHLETIC: The NHL is holding its Board of Governors’ meetings on Monday and Tuesday.

Upcoming negotiations with the NHL Players’ Association on a new collective bargaining agreement is expected to be among the topics of discussion. The current CBA expires in September 2026 but both sides appear keen to reach an agreement well before then.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Perhaps Andlauer’s concerns about soft tampering will be on the agenda.

THE DENVER POST: Corey Masisak weighed in on the Colorado Avalanche making a multi-player trade on Monday that saw goaltender Alexandar Georgiev shipped to the San Jose Sharks for netminder Mackenzie Blackwood. Masisak considered it a “bold, risky move” by Avalanche general manager Chris MacFarland to improve his club’s shaky goaltending.

NBC SPORTS BAY AREA: Sheng Peng reports Sharks GM Mike Grier believes the offer from the Avalanche was too good to pass up. He believes the return, including promising forward Nikolai Kovalenko, will help his club continue rebuilding. Grier said the addition of Georgiev will also buy a little more time for promising goalie Yaroslav Askarov to develop his game with their AHL affiliate.

NEW JERSEY HOCKEY NOW: The Devils will induct Jacques Lemaire into its Ring of Honor in January. He is the winningest coach in franchise history, with 276 career regular-season victories, and 35 playoff wins. Lemaire coached the Devils to their first Stanley Cup championship in 1995.

THE HOCKEY NEWS: St. Louis Blues defenseman Nick Leddy has returned to St. Louis for further testing regarding his lower-body injury. He’s been sidelined for the past 24 games.

DAILY FACEOFF: Nashville Predators defenseman Alexandre Carrier is out week-to-week with an upper-body injury suffered during Saturday’s game against the Senators.

TSN: The Minnesota Wild assigned defenseman David Jiricek to their AHL affiliate in Iowa. He was acquired on Nov. 30 in a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

THE SCORE: Beckett Sennecke has been added to Team Canada’s selection camp for the upcoming 2025 World Junior Championship. Chosen third overall by the Ducks in this year’s draft, he was passed over during the initial selection.

Are more moves coming for the Rangers after trading Jacob Trouba to the Ducks? Will the Leafs try to bring back Nazem Kadri? Find out in today’s NHL Rumor Mill.

ARE MORE TRADES IN STORE FOR THE RANGERS?

NEW YORK POST: Larry Brooks reports more moves are coming for the Rangers after they traded Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks on Friday.

Brooks claims Rangers general manager Chris Drury spent the week in trade talks with multiple clubs. He indicated that Ottawa Senators winger Brady Tkachuk is Drury’s primary trade target.

Acquiring “the Senators’ 25-year-old hardscrabble captain” would immediately change the Rangers’ identity. However, the package going to Ottawa would have to be significant and likely include winger Alexis Lafreniere.

OTTAWA SUN: Bruce Garrioch reports the Senators may have “kicked tires” on Jacob Trouba before he was shipped to the Ducks. However, they weren’t anywhere close to a deal because the veteran defenseman did not want to be traded to a Canadian team.

Garrioch also reports the Senators have no intention of trading Tkachuk. One well-placed source called the Post story “total bullshit” while another called the report “garbage.” The Senators would rather win with Tkachuk rather than trade him away. Garrioch indicated that Sens GM Steve Staios intended to speak with his captain to assure him there was nothing to the story.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Those well-placed sources Garrioch referred to are probably members of the Senators’ front office, perhaps even Staios himself.

Staios could consider shaking up the Senators if they fail to end their playoff drought this season. Moving Tkachuk would be an extreme decision unless he wants out and there’s no indication he does. Something worth keeping in mind is Tkachuk’s no-movement clause begins on July 1, 2025. 

NEW YORK POST: Returning to the Rangers, Brooks believes Drury has put the club in a better place by trading Trouba and his $8 million annual salary cap hit through 2025-26. That move leaves the Rangers with a projected $21.9 million of trade deadline cap space. “No other contender comes close,” claims Brooks, believing the Rangers “will have their pickings the rest of the way.”

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Brooks also walked back his claim that the Rangers were pursuing Tkachuk, but noted the Senators winger is the type of player the Blueshirts are seeking. They have the cap space to add that player at the trade deadline.

In an earlier report, Brooks suggested Drury should contact the Nashville Predators and find out if Steven Stamkos would waive his no-movement clause. He also proposed speaking with the Buffalo Sabres and Utah Hockey Club as those teams must make changes.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Stamkos isn’t a young power forward like Tkachuk. The 34-year-old winger is under contract for three more seasons with an AAV of $8 million. His decline this season could be due to age and the wear-and-tear of 17 NHL seasons catching up with him. Stamkos is an expensive risk the Rangers can’t afford to take.

RG.ORG: Jim Biringer reports the Rangers and Ducks might not be done dealing with each other. Sources close to the situation claimed the Rangers sought winger Frank Vatrano in the Trouba deal.

They opted to move on from Trouba’s $8 million cap hit but could revisit their interest in Vatrano. Biringer’s sources say Drury spoke with Ducks GM Pat Verbeek at last year’s trade deadline about Vatrano but the Rangers GM didn’t want to part with winger Kaapo Kaako. However, Drury might be willing to move on from Kaako now.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: As Brooks noted, the Rangers have plenty of cap space to make significant moves by the March 7 trade deadline. They can afford Vatrano’s $3.65 million cap hit. He played briefly for them in the 2021-22 season and had a solid performance during their run to the 2022 Eastern Conference Final. Vatrano departed for the Ducks via free agency that summer as the Rangers couldn’t afford to retain him.

ESPN’s Emily Kaplan reported Detroit Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman was very interested in landing Trouba but couldn’t reach suitable trade terms with the Rangers.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Rangers reportedly tried to trade Trouba to the Red Wings in June but he used his no-movement clause to spike the deal for family reasons. Maybe Yzerman will try again next summer if Trouba doesn’t work out for the Ducks.

SHOULD THE LEAFS PURSUE NAZEM KADRI?

THE HOCKEY NEWS: Evan Doerfler recently cited former Sportsnet analyst Doug MacLean telling Sportsnet 590 The Fan that he believes the Toronto Maple Leafs should bring back Nazem Kadri. The 34-year-old center began his career with the Leafs and now plays with the Calgary Flames.

MacLean claimed the Leafs were kicking tires for a second-line center. He believes Kadri’s physical two-way style is what they need to compete against the defending champion Florida Panthers as well as the Carolina Hurricanes, New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers.

DAILY FACEOFF’s Jeff Marek shared MacLean’s opinion, believing it would be a good fit for both clubs. The Flames are rebuilding and won’t make the playoffs right now. He acknowledged Kadri’s leadership is helpful to the young Flames but he’d be a better fit with the Leafs if they’re to compete against a tough team like the Panthers.

SPORTSNET: Calgary Flames beat writer Eric Francis was asked where he thought the Flames would trade Kadri. He believes the veteran center would generate plenty of interest and didn’t rule out the possibility if the right offer came along. However, he doesn’t see that happening and doesn’t believe the Flames are shopping Kadri.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Some fans have cited these reports as substantiation that the Leafs are trying to acquire Kadri or that he would welcome a trade to a contender. However, MacLean and Marek were suggesting the Leafs pursue Kadri, not stating it as a fact. Francis said we should “never say never” but made it clear the Flames aren’t peddling him.

None of them said Kadri wants out of Calgary. During training camp, Kadri told reporters to pump the brakes on the trade speculation that dogged him during the offseason, claiming he loved the team and the city. He might welcome a trade at some point but not right now.

Kadri is a more mature player than when his loose cannon act proved costly to the Leafs in the 2018 and 2019 playoffs. He elevated his stock with a superb effort helping the Colorado Avalanche win the 2022 Stanley Cup and has fit well into the elder statesman role with the Flames.

He would be a better fit with the Leafs now. Nevertheless, everything linking him to Toronto right now is based on the musings of a couple of pundits.

What’s the latest on Rangers stars Jacob Trouba and Chris Kreider? Could the Rangers or Red Wings have former coach Joel Quenneville in their sights? Are changes in store for the Islanders? Find out in the Sunday NHL Rumor Roundup.

THE LATEST ON THE RANGERS

SPORTSNET: Elliotte Friedman reports teams are trying to figure out what the New York Rangers are trying to do after they sent around a note last week indicating Jacob Trouba and Chris Kreider were available.

Friedman noted that Trouba had been in the rumor mill before but not Kreider. “Are there other players available? And since Trouba and Kreider have partial no-trade clauses, where would they be willing to go?”

Things may have calmed down a bit on Saturday after the Rangers beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 to snap a five-game losing skid. Friedman thinks they want to tone down the heat and pause before doing anything too intense or something they might regret later.

Friedman indicated the Rangers haven’t permitted rival clubs to speak with Trouba or Kreider. They want to keep control of the process, which is critical as no one wants to run afoul of the NHL’s tampering rules.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The salaries of Trouba and Kreider are also obstacles that could be insurmountable. Trouba is signed through 2025-26 with an average annual value of $8 million while Kreider’s is $6.5 million through 2026-27. Those sound like deals that get done in the offseason when teams have more cap space and willingness to swing major deals.

Trouba and Kreider each have 15-team no-trade lists. Clubs with depth in tradeable assets are likely rebuilding and would probably be on those no-trade lists.

Drury bungled this situation. His actions could jeopardize the rest of the Rangers’ season, leading to Igor Shesterkin’s departure next summer as a free agent, jeopardizing Drury’s tenure as general manager.

RG.ORG: Marco D’Amico cites a source suggesting a coaching change could be coming for the Rangers. The source claims their current bench boss, Peter Laviolette, doesn’t have long in New York, adding Joel Quenneville could be the guy if general manager Chris Drury wants to go that route.

D’Amico cites another NHL insider suggesting that Quenneville could also be on the radar of Detroit Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman if he changes things behind the bench.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Drury is unlikely to find a suitable trade for Trouba or Kreider. A coaching change might be his only option to get his club back on track. The Red Wings, meanwhile, rarely replace coaches during the season and could stick with current bench boss Derek Lalonde until the end of this campaign.

ARE CHANGES COMING FOR THE ISLANDERS?

RG.ORG: Jim Biringer reports a source claims the New York Islanders were considering a management change before last season began. However, general manager Lou Lamoriello saved his job when the club squeaked into the 2024 playoffs.

Lamoriello has shunned rebuilding because his teams are never out of the playoff mix. However, the Islanders could become sellers this season if they don’t soon turn things around. They’re dealing with injuries to key players like Mathew Barzal, Anthony Duclair, Adam Pelech and Mike Reilly, but they weren’t winning when they were in the lineup.

Brock Nelson is the most likely trade candidate if the Isles become sellers. The 33-year-old center is slated to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Biringer’s source claims Nelson was in play last season and could’ve been moved if the team wasn’t in the wild-card mix. He said the Vancouver Canucks were interested in him and could have their eye on the center again this year.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It will be interesting to see what unfolds if they fail to gain ground in the standings. I’ve mentioned before that the Islanders won’t move Nelson if they’re still in the playoff chase by the March trade deadline but he will draw interest just the same.

The Canucks could be a suitor for Nelson. However, most of the chatter out of Vancouver indicates their focus is on shoring up their defense corps.

Jordan Binnington sets a Blues record, a hat trick performance for the Blackhawks’ Taylor Hall, Hurricanes forward Martin Necas takes over the league scoring lead, and more in today’s NHL Morning Coffee Headlines.

NHL.COM: St. Louis Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington set a franchise record with his 152nd win by making 31 saves to shut out the New Jersey Devils 3-0. Robert Thomas opened the scoring just nine seconds in to tie the second-fastest goal in franchise history. Dylan Holloway scored the other two goals. Jacob Markstrom stopped 17 shots for the Devils.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Blues forward Pavel Buchnevich left the game early with an injury to his right leg after getting knocked to the ice by Devils forward Paul Cotter. He’ll be reevaluated on Thursday with an update expected on Friday.

Chicago Blackhawks winger Taylor Hall netted his first hat trick since Dec. 2013 in a 6-2 upset of the Dallas Stars. Connor Bedard snapped a 12-game goalless drought and Tyler Bertuzzi collected two assists. Colin Blackwell and Matt Duchene replied for the Stars.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Stars center Roope Hintz missed this game with an undisclosed injury.

Carolina Hurricanes forward Martin Necas collected two assists to take over the NHL scoring lead with 37 points in a 4-3 victory over the New York Rangers, handing the latter their fourth straight loss. The Hurricanes got unanswered third-period goals from Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Jackson Blake for the win. Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin stopped 26 shots while teammate Brett Berard scored his first NHL goal.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Necas sits two points ahead of Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon atop the scoring race. Rangers forwards Filip Chytil and Chris Kreider missed this game due to injuries. Kreider and teammate Jacob Trouba are the subject of trade rumors after reports emerged they were among several Rangers veterans made available by management. He said he’s spoken with general manager Chris Drury and admitted there’s “frustration, angst, tension” in the dressing room. “Let’s go through this s**t now and figure out who we are,” he said.

The Minnesota Wild got a 39-save shutout from Filip Gustavsson to blank the Buffalo Sabres 1-0, ending the latter’s three-game win streak. Kirill Kaprizov scored his 14th goal of the season. Ukko-Pekka Luukonen turned aside 28 shots for the Sabres.

An overtime goal by Lucas Raymond lifted the Detroit Red Wings to a 2-1 win over the Calgary Flames. Cam Talbot stopped 24 shots and Alex DeBrincat scored for the Red Wings while Connor Zary replied for the Flames.

The Washington Capitals overcame goalie Charlie Lindgren accidentally scoring into his own net to nip the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-4. Lindgren’s own goal in the third period gave the Lightning a 4-3 lead and was credited to Brayden Point, giving him a hat trick. However, Lindgren’s teammates John Carlson and Tom Wilson subsequently scored to give their team the win.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Wilson, Aliaksei Protas and Dylan Strome each had a goal and an assist for the Capitals.

Florida Panthers winger Carter Verhaeghe had a goal and two assists as his club ended a four-game losing skid with a 5-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs, snapping the Leafs’ four-game winning streak. Panthers forward Sam Reinhart tallied his league-leading 17th goal while Aleksander Barkov and Sam Bennett each had a goal and an assist. Leafs winger Mitch Marner scored to extend his points streak to five games.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Reinhart wasn’t expected to score at the same pace that netted him a career-high 57 goals last season. He could exceed that mark at his current level of production. Meanwhile, Panthers center Anton Lundell missed this game after taking a puck to the face during Monday’s game against Washington.

The Boston Bruins got two goals from Pavel Zacha and Brad Marchand to defeat the New York Islanders 6-3. Elias Lindholm and David Pastrnak each collected three assists for the Bruins. Brock Nelson had two goals and an assist for the Islanders, who are 1-4-1 in their last six games.

Pittsburgh Penguins winger Bryan Rust tallied twice, including the winning goal, as his club held off the Vancouver Canucks 5-4. Rust finished with three points and teammate Erik Karlsson had three assists. Quinn Hughes had a goal and two assists and Elias Pettersson a goal and an assist for the Canucks. The Penguins snapped a three-game winless skid.

Montreal Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki’s overtime goal gave his club a 4-3 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Canadiens winger Juraj Slafkovsky ended a 14-game goalless drought and collected an assist while teammate Cole Caufield scored his 13th goal. Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski extended his points streak to six games with a Gordie Howe hat trick after fighting Canadiens winger Brendan Gallagher.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Blue Jackets head coach Dean Evason was furious over the Suzuki goal, believing the Canadiens captain should’ve received a holding penalty on Kent Johnson seconds before.

Philadelphia Flyers captain Sean Couturier scored in overtime as his club overcame a 2-1 deficit for a 3-2 victory over the Nashville Predators. Morgan Frost scored the tying goal with 12 seconds remaining in regulation to set the stage for Couturier’s game-winner. Roman Josi and Ryan O’Reilly scored for the Predators, who’ve won only three games in their last 12 contests.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Before the game, the Predators announced defenseman Jeremy Lauzon is sidelined week-to-week with a lower-body injury.

Colorado Avalanche winger Valeri Nichushkin scored the tying goal in the second period and the winner in a shootout to beat the Vegas Golden Knights 2-1. Pavel Dorofeyev scored for the Golden Knights.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Golden Knights defenseman Alex Pietrangelo returned to action after missing three games with an upper-body injury. Teammate William Karlsson also returned after missing the previous game to attend the birth of his second child. Before the game, the Avalanche announced that winger Jonathan Drouin was out week-to-week with an upper-body injury.

The Los Angeles Kings downed the Winnipeg Jets 4-1. Anze Kopitar and Adrian Kempe each had a goal and an assist while goaltender David Rittich made 13 saves for his 100th NHL win. Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck turned aside 29 shots and Gabriel Vilardi scored his club’s only goal.

Anaheim Ducks netminder John Gibson kicked out 42 shots in a 5-2 win over the Seattle Kraken. Trevor Zegras, Alex Killorn and Cutter Gauthier each had a goal and an assist for the Ducks. Eeli Tolvanen and Oliver Bjorkstrand replied for the Kraken.

Ottawa Senators forward Adam Gaudette tallied twice and Tim Stutzle collected three assists in a 4-3 win over the San Jose Sharks despite being limited to 11 shots. Sharks rookie Will Smith had a goal and an assist while teammate Macklin Celebrini scored his sixth point in the last four games.

A record night for Lightning winger Brandon Hagel, Hurricanes winger Martin Necas sits on top of the scoring race, the three stars of the week are revealed, and more in today’s NHL Morning Coffee Headlines.

RECAPS OF MONDAY’S GAMES

NHL.COM: Tampa Bay Lightning winger Brandon Hagel collected a career-high five assists in an 8-2 drubbing of the Colorado Avalanche. Hagel tied an NHL record with four assists in the first period. Nikita Kucherov had a goal and two assists and Jake Guentzel tallied twice for the Lightning. Ivan Ivan scored two goals for the Avalanche as their three-game win streak ended.

Carolina Hurricanes forward Martin Necas had a goal and an assist to take over first place in the NHL scoring race (35 points) as his club downed the Dallas Stars 6-4. The Hurricanes got a goal and three assists from Sebastian Aho plus a goal and two assists from Seth Jarvis. Tyler Seguin, Mason Marchment and Miro Heiskanen each had a goal and an assist for the Stars as they blew a 3-1 lead.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Hurricanes goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov missed this game with a concussion. There is no timetable for his return. They’re also missing starter Frederik Andersen as he’s sidelined until January recovering from knee surgery. The Canes are making do with call-ups Spencer Martin and Yaniv Perets but there’s speculation they could turn to the trade market.

The Winnipeg Jets got a 43-save performance from goaltender Connor Hellebuyck for a 4-1 win over the Minnesota Wild. Alex Iafallo scored twice and Neal Pionk picked up two assists as the Jets (18-4-0) sat atop the overall standings with 36 points. Jake Middleton scored for the Wild, who sit second in the Central Division with 30 points, six behind the Jets.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Wild winger Kirill Kaprizov was held scoreless in this game as he returned to action after missing a game with a lower-body injury. Teammate Jakub Lauko left the game with a lower-body injury.

New Jersey Devils captain Nico Hischier snapped a 10-game goalless drought with his first NHL hat trick, leading his club over the Nashville Predators 5-2. Filip Forsberg and Zachary L’Heureux replied for the Predators. The Devils have won five of their last six games and hold first place in the Metropolitan Division with 32 points. Predators goaltender Juuse Saros was pulled in the second period after giving up four goals on 30 shots.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Devils forward Timo Meier received a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct in the third period for cross-checking L’Heureux in the face. L’Heureux immediately left the game for treatment.

The Washington Capitals snapped a two-game losing skid with a 4-1 victory over the Florida Panthers, handing the latter their sixth loss in their last seven games. Jakob Chychrun scored the go-ahead goal and picked up two assists while Lars Eller tallied twice. Niko Mikkola had the only goal for the Panthers.

St. Louis Blue head coach Jim Montgomery got his first win with his new club as they defeated the New York Rangers 5-2. Zack Bolduc scored two goals, Brayden Schenn had a goal and an assist and Dylan Holloway collected two assists for the Blues. Igor Shesterkin stopped 38 shots for the struggling Rangers as they dropped their third straight game.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Rangers winger Chris Kreider missed this game with an upper-body injury, resulting in the recall of Matt Rempe from their AHL affiliate in Hartford.

The Rangers’ slump has sparked plenty of trade rumors amid reports general manager Chris Drury has informed his 31 NHL counterparts that he’s open for business. I’ll have more in today’s Rumor Mill.

A shootout goal by Jack Eichel lifted the Vegas Golden Knights over the Philadelphia Flyers by a score of 5-4. Eichel also had a goal and an assist in regulation as did teammate Ivan Barbashev as their club sits in first place in the Pacific Division with 30 points. Morgan Frost had a goal and an assist for the Flyers.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Golden Knights played without Zach Whitecloud (upper-body injury) and William Karlsson (personal reasons).

San Jose Sharks rookie Macklin Celebrini had his first three-point game (two goals, one assist) in a 7-2 upset of the Los Angeles Kings. Fellow Sharks rookie Will Smith picked up two assists and rookie netminder Yaroslav Askarov stopped 22 shots for his first win with the Sharks. Anze Kopitar and Adrian Kempe each had two points for the Kings, who’ve dropped five of their last eight contests.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Sharks forward Nico Sturm scored in his return to action after missing five games with an upper-body injury.

The Ottawa Senators nipped the Calgary Flames 4-3. Senators forwards Drake Batherson and Brady Tkachuk each had a goal and an assist to snap a five-game winless skid (0-4-1). Jonathan Huberdeau, Yegor Sherangovich and Nazem Kadri scored for the Flames as their four-game winning streak ended.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Senators Defenseman Artem Zub was sidelined by a broken foot suffered during Saturday’s game against the Vancouver Canucks and could be out for a while. Teammate David Perron missed this game with an upper-body injury.

Three unanswered third-period goals by Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond and Simon Edvinsson lifted the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-2 victory over the New York Islanders. Anders Lee and Kyle Palmieri were the goalscorers for the Islanders, who’ve dropped six of their last eight games.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Isles defenseman Alexander Romanov missed this game due to an illness and is listed as day-to-day.

The Seattle Kraken got a goal and an assist from Shane Wright to beat the Anaheim Ducks 3-2. Joey Daccord picked up the win with a 21-save performance. Trevor Zegras and Frank Vatrano replied for the Ducks.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Ducks center Mason McTavish was held scoreless as he returned to the roster after missing six games with an upper-body injury. Ducks center Leo Carlsson left the game with an upper-body injury in the second period following a hit from Kraken forward Tye Kartye. Before the game, the Ducks placed Brock McGinn (lower body) on injured reserve.

HEADLINES

NHL.COM: Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski, Colorado Avalanche winger Mikko Rantanen, and Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll were the NHL’s three stars for the week ending Nov. 24, 2024.

SPORTSNET: Vancouver Canucks winger Brock Boeser could return to action on Tuesday against the Boston Bruins. He’s missed the last seven games with a concussion.

Montreal Canadiens winger Patrik Laine participated fully in his club’s practice on Monday. It’s an encouraging sign that Laine is making strides in his recovery from a sprained knee but he’s not expected to return before the end of this week.

THE TENNESSEAN: The Nashville Predators traded forward Philip Tomasino yesterday to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft.

Tomasino was a first-round pick of the Predators (24th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft. General manager Barry Trotz explained that he shipped out the 23-year-old center because of a lack of production over the past two seasons. He believed it was time for a change.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Tomasino could have a better shot of becoming an NHL regular with the retooling Penguins as they transition younger players into their lineup.

NEW YORK POST: Former NHL player turned analyst Paul Bissonnette was assaulted by six individuals at a restaurant in Scottsdale, Arizona on Sunday evening. He said he was trying to intervene after seeing a group of drunken golfers being abusive to the restaurant staff.

Five of the six men face misdemeanors while a sixth faces a felony. Bissonnette said he took a few shots but gave more. He went to the hospital to get checked out following the melee but said he was “all good”, thanking the restaurant staff and the responding police offers.
