THE DENVER POST: Corey Masisak believes the first-overall Colorado Avalanche will “almost certainly” add another defenseman before the March 6 trade deadline. However, adding a third-line center is a more pressing need.

The Avalanche could stick with Ross Colton in that role. Bednar recently praised Colton’s efforts in his first game in that role. They could stick with him if the cost of finding other options proves expensive.

Masisak suggested former Colorado centers such as Ryan O’Reilly of the Nashville Predators and Nazem Kadri of the Calgary Flames as possibilities. However, the cost for both makes them unlikely trade targets for the Avalanche.

Other options include Alexander Wennberg of the San Jose Sharks, Jason Dickinson of the Chicago Blackhawks, and former Av Charlie Coyle of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: O’Reilly reportedly isn’t considering a trade at this time. Kadri’s contract and the Flames’ asking price are too expensive. The Sharks won’t part with Wennberg if they remain in playoff contention.

Dickinson and Coyle could be more affordable if the Blackhawks and Blue Jackets go into sell mode. However, the Avs could be forced to overpay if other clubs get into the bidding, and they’ve already sacrificed future assets in recent years.

NEW YORK POST: Ethan Sears believes the Islanders have a steady, left-shot defenseman and a top-six winger near the top of their Christmas wish list to replace sidelined blueliner Alexander Romanov and winger Kyle Palmieri.

If the Islanders become buyers, they could get salary-cap relief by placing Romanov and Palmieri on long-term injury reserve. San Jose Jose Sharks defensemen Mario Ferraro and former Islander Nick Leddy could be blueline targets, while Kiefer Sherwood of the Vancouver Canucks or Matias Maccelli of the Toronto Maple Leafs might make sense as a replacement for Palmieri.

Sears doesn’t see general manager Mathieu Darche parting with a first-round pick to get any of those players.

For now, it’s too early to tell which path Darche might choose. Sears noted that a couple of bad weeks could knock them out of playoff contention in the tightly packed Eastern Conference.

If Darche buys early, he could be parting with future assets that he’ll need to recoup if things go sideways. If he waits too long, he’ll end up in sell mode with UFA-eligible forwards Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Anders Lee.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Darche will remain patient for now, especially given how few sellers there are in the trade market. The Isles’ performance in January will likely determine which path he takes, especially if more teams become sellers.

The Sharks aren’t likely to part with Ferraro and Leddy if they remain in playoff contention. Sherwood is available, but the Canucks’ asking price could be too high for Darche. Maccelli should be an affordable addition, but his struggles this season don’t make him an enticing trade target.

THE ATHLETIC: Eric Stephens believes the Los Angeles Kings have more work to do after trading center Phillip Danault to the Montreal Canadiens on Friday. He noted they didn’t get a roster player back in the deal, and the club continues to struggle offensively.

Stephens pointed out that the draft pick they got in the Danault deal would look good if the Kings were rebuilding. However, the club is built to win right now, and they still believe they can reach the playoffs and make some noise.

That second-round pick will only be valuable if it can be turned into a player (like Ryan O’Reilly of the Nashville Predators or Brayden Schenn of the St. Louis Blues) who makes the Kings better.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Kings GM Ken Holland probably isn’t done making moves. Stephens pointed out that they shed Danault’s $5.5 million cap hit for this season and next, giving the Kings $9.2 million in current cap space, and a projected deadline cap space of $26 million.

As mentioned earlier, O’Reilly isn’t prepared to consider a trade right now. Meanwhile, the Blues intend to seek full value for any player they trade, meaning they’ll want a young NHL player for Schenn instead of draft picks.

PENGUINS CONCERNED ABOUT KRIS LETANG’S PLAY

THE ATHLETIC: Josh Yohe reports there is considerable concern among the Pittsburgh Penguins’ organization regarding Kris Letang’s struggles this season. The 38-year-old defenseman has always been plagued by the occasional mental lapse in his game, but his athleticism and stamina often offset that issue. Not anymore.

Letang won’t be traded, partly because he’s got a full no-movement clause. There’s also no market for him given his age, a health history that includes two strokes, and his $6.1 million average annual value through 2027-28.

Yohe also pointed out that a buyout is unlikely. Letang was 35 when he signed his current contract, meaning the Penguins won’t receive any cap relief. Retirement is unlikely unless health or another circumstance forces his hand.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: This isn’t a trade rumor, but the frustration over the decline in Letang’s play could prompt some Penguins fans to call on the club’s management to peddle him, even if it means retaining half of his cap hit. It’s worthwhile pointing out the reasons why such a move is unlikely.

DEVILS REPORTEDLY ATTEMPTED TO MOVE HAMILTON AND PALAT

NEW JERSEY HOCKEY NOW: James Nichols noted that ESPN’s Kevin Weekes reported the Devils attempted to move defenseman Dougie Hamilton and winger Ondrej Palat. According to Weekes, Hamilton and Palat were mentioned in potential trade scenarios involving the Devils.

Hamilton surfaced in trade rumors during the summer when the Devils were reportedly gauging the trade market for the 32-year-old defenseman. He shrugged them off at the time, insisting that he wanted to remain with the Devils. Hamilton is signed through 2027-28 with an AAV of $9 million and a 10-team trade list, along with a no-movement clause that prevents his demotion to the AHL without his permission.

Palat, 34, has the same conditions in his contract. He’s signed through next season with an AAV of $6 million.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Those contracts are sticking points in any attempt to move those two players, as is the decline in their production. Still, Hamilton could garner more interest given his puck-moving abilities.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE DEVILS, RED WINGS, AND RANGERS AFTER MISSING OUT ON QUINN HUGHES?

SPORTSNET: Ryan Dixon speculated over which players the Devils and the Detroit Red Wings might pursue after failing in their efforts to acquire Quinn Hughes before he was traded to the Minnesota Wild on Friday.

Dixon wondered if the Devils might consider Buffalo Sabres power forward Alex Tuch as a trade target. He believes Nazem Kadri of the Calgary Flames would be a good fit for the Detroit Red Wings as their second-line center.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Flames ownership insisted that Kadri won’t be traded, so we must assume he’s unavailable. Tuch, however, could become a trade candidate if the Sabres feel they could lose him to free agency next summer.

THE ATHLETIC: Vincent Z. Mercogliano took note of New York Rangers GM Chris Drury’s interest in Quinn Hughes. He thinks Drury could attempt another big swing at a big-name player in the trade market. However, the Rangers GM has depreciated his club’s prospect pool, which makes it difficult to win any bidding wars for notable talent in the trade market.

Mercogliano speculated that Drury may have offered up winger Alexis Lafreniere, defenseman Braden Schneider, and at least one of their two first-round picks in the 2026 NHL Draft to the Vancouver Canucks for Hughes.

However, the Canucks sought a young, top-six center, which the Rangers don’t have. Meanwhile, the trade value of Lafreniere and Schneider isn’t what it was a few years ago.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Red Wings are better-positioned than the Devils and Rangers to land a noteworthy player in the trade market. They have more cap space and plenty of young players and promising prospects to draw on for trade bait if they wish to.

THE LATEST ON THE SENATORS

OTTAWA SUN: Bruce Garrioch reports Senators GM Steve Staios continues to scour the trade market for a top-nine forward and a defenseman. He believes Staios has contacted sellers such as the Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames, St. Louis Blues, and the Nashville Predators.

Many teams remain in the playoff chase, which means the sellers’ asking prices remain high.

The Senators are among the clubs interested in Canucks winger Kiefer Sherwood, who carries a $1.5 million cap hit and is slated to become an unrestricted free agent in July. He’s also drawn interest from the Boston Bruins, New York Islanders, Tampa Bay Lightning, Dallas Stars, and Philadelphia Flyers.

Sherwood’s teammate, Conor Garland, isn’t expected to be traded. However, Garrioch claims that if the Canucks were to peddle Garland, he’s a player that Senators head coach Travis Green holds in high regard. However, the 29-year-old’s six-year contract extension kicks in next season, with a $6 million AAV and a full no-movement clause.

Garrioch believes Staios has had conversations with Flames GM Craig Conroy. He thinks Flames winger Blake Coleman could be a good fit with the Senators.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The problem in landing Sherwood and Coleman is that a lot of teams are interested in them, meaning the Canucks and Flames will retain them for as long as possible to drive up their value before the March 6 trade deadline. Garland’s new contract is a big stumbling block that could be insurmountable unless the Canucks are willing to retain salary.

REICHEL ON THE TRADE BLOCK AGAIN

THE PROVINCE: Ben Kuzma reports the Vancouver Canucks are willing to entertain trade offers for Lukas Reichel.

The Canucks acquired Reichel from the Chicago Blackhawks earlier this season. Projected to become a top-six forward when drafted by the Blackhawks, he’s struggled to meet expectations as a scorer.

Kuzma cited Reichel’s poor decision-making, penchant for turnovers, lack of battle, and misfiring on scoring chances as the reasons why he’s been demoted to the Canucks’ AHL affiliate in Abbotsford.

The latest on Canucks captain Quinn Hughes and winger Kiefer Sherwood in today’s NHL Rumor Mill.

TSN: Darren Dreger said that the Vancouver Canucks got calls from rival clubs after they sent out their memo indicating they were willing to entertain offers for their pending unrestricted free agents. Some of those teams, such as the New Jersey Devils, also inquired about their non-UFAs like Quinn Hughes, but not much more than that.

Pierre LeBrun believes the big decision facing the Canucks is whether to move Hughes before the March 6 trade deadline, or wait until the offseason and attempt to re-sign the 26-year-old superstar defenseman, or peddle him at the draft.

LeBrun thinks it would be a cleaner process for the Canucks to move Hughes before the trade deadline. That means the blueliner’s agent doesn’t have to get involved, and they wouldn’t have the Hughes camp basically picking their team in July. A selling point in moving him by the trade deadline is that a team would have him for two playoff runs.

Chris Johnston said the Canucks don’t want to trade Hughes. However, their struggles this season will make it difficult for them to convince him to stay. With the standings compressed, there’s still time to save their season, but that means trying to bolster their roster.

SPORTSNET: During his latest “32 Thoughts” podcast, Elliotte Friedman said he believed the Canucks and the Detroit Red Wings discussed Hughes. He thinks that there could be a deal to be made if they want to do one.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Some of these clubs seemed to be conducting due diligence regarding Hughes. The Canucks don’t appear to be shopping him at this point, and it doesn’t seem like they’re open to offers for him.

That could change later in the season if the Canucks fail to improve and Hughes is noncommittal about signing an extension next summer.

THE ATHLETIC: Meanwhile, Michael Russo and Joe Smith reported the Minnesota Wild have “significant interest” in Kiefer Sherwood. The 30-year-old Canucks winger is UFA-eligible in July.

The Wild reportedly offered the Canucks a good young prospect to suit their asking price, but the cost has been raised. They now want a good roster player and are also seeking a first-round pick.

It’s rumored the Canucks remain interested in sidelined Wild center Marco Rossi, but Russo and Smith don’t see them trading Rossi for Sherwood.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: A roster player and a first-rounder is a high price for Sherwood. It’s doubtful that any club will pony up that much to get him.

The Canucks were interested in Rossi during the offseason. During his podcast on Monday, Elliotte Friedman said the Wild asked about Aatu Raty, but the Canucks didn’t want to move him because they wanted to give him a chance.

SPORTSNET: Elliotte Friedman said the Canucks asked the Philadelphia Flyers about Owen Tippett in a return for Sherwood. However, he thinks the Flyers want to hang on to the 26-year-old winger. The trade rumors may have bothered Tippett, and Friedman thinks they’re trying to tell the winger that it’s not their doing.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Tippett’s been the subject of trade conjecture since the summer. However, the Flyers believe the three-time 20-goal scorer has 30-goal potential. He’s got another six seasons remaining on his contract, so they think he can elevate his game to another level.

NEW JERSEY HOCKEY NOW: James Nichols weighed in on a recent rumor suggesting the Devils may be interested in Nashville Predators forward Steven Stamkos.

Nichols noted that the Devils were among the few suitors for Stamkos when he went to free agency in July 2024. While his production has declined with the Predators, it could improve playing with the Devils, where he’d have playmakers such as Jesper Bratt and a healthy Jack Hughes to set him up.

Nevertheless, a Stamkos trade would be a risky move. He’s 35, with two years remaining on his contract, which carries an average annual value of $8 million. A potential trade would require the Predators to retain some salary, which means increasing the compensation going to Nashville.

Nichols wondered if a prospect such as Seamus Casey and two second-round draft picks would be enough to land Stamkos.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Devils have been struggling to score lately, partly because Hughes is sidelined with an injured hand. Once he returns, they could still seek a reliable scorer.

Stamkos probably isn’t the only one they’re considering, assuming he’s willing to waive his no-movement clause to go to New Jersey. Management will likely remain patient and see what other options emerge in the trade market as more teams fall by the wayside in the playoff chase.

TVA SPORTS: CHEK-TV’s Rick Dhaliwal claimed the Montreal Canadiens and Minnesota Wild are two teams with an interest in Kiefer Sherwood. The 30-year-old Vancouver Canucks winger is eligible for unrestricted free-agent status next July, and the two sides aren’t any closer to a contract extension.

The Canucks recently scouted the Canadiens during their game against the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday. They’re interested in getting a young player in exchange for Sherwood, and Dhaliwal wondered if they might target someone like Canadiens winger Zack Bolduc.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Canadiens are interested in adding to their forward line, preferably a second-line center. However, giving up the 22-year-old Bolduc (who was acquired from the St. Louis Blues last summer) for the 30-year-old Sherwood goes against the Habs’ habit of bringing in players in their twenties with term remaining on their contracts.

The Canadiens probably prefer to offer up a draft pick or prospect for Sherwood. If the asking price is Bolduc, they might look elsewhere for help at forward.

TSN: Darren Dreger believes Alex Formenton could become an offer-sheet candidate next summer.

The 26-year-old Ottawa Senators forward is a restricted free agent who is now ineligible to play in the NHL this season because he wasn’t signed by the Dec. 1 deadline for an RFA contract.

In September, Senators general manager Steve Staios said Formenton would not be returning to the club, as both sides believed it was best for him to have a fresh start elsewhere. Staios attempted to trade Formenton this fall, but couldn’t find any takers.

STEVEN STAMKOS LINKED TO THE DEVILS

THE ATHLETIC: Pierre LeBrun reports the New Jersey Devils are believed to have internally discussed Nashville Predators forward Steven Stamkos, among several other trade targets.

Stamkos, 35, is signed through 2027-28 with an average annual value of $8 million and a full no-movement clause. LeBrun doubts that he’s going anywhere this season, but indicated that the Predators “would definitely listen to calls on him.”

The Devils were among the suitors for Stamkos when he was an unrestricted free agent in 2024. LeBrun suggests this is something to keep an eye on as we get closer to the March 6 trade deadline.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The decline in Stamkos’ production since 2023-24 likely means the Devils won’t have to put together a significant offer to pry him away from the Predators, assuming he’ll waive his NMC.

Cap space will be a sticking point. The Devils have a projected $3.6 million in trade deadline cap room. Even if they convince the Predators to retain salary (which will raise their asking price), they still must free up more cap space to acquire Stamkos.

HOW WILL THE STARS REPLACE TYLER SEGUIN?

TSN: Chris Johnston believes the recent injury to Tyler Seguin could turn the Dallas Stars into more aggressive buyers by the trade deadline.

Seguin suffered what could be a season-ending knee injury earlier this week. The Stars currently have just over $3 million in cap space, but that’s with sidelined forwards Matt Duchene and Adam Erne and defenseman Nils Lundkvist on long-term injury reserve (LTIR)

If Seguin is out for the season (including the playoffs), he’ll go on season-ending long-term injury reserve (SELTIR). That would enable the Stars to spend up to the entirety of his $9.85 million cap hit to exceed the cap to another player.

On the other hand, if Seguin is expected to return later in the regular season or during the playoffs, the LTIR benefit is limited to last season’s average league salary, which was just over $3.8 million.

THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS: Lia Assimakopoulos goes into greater detail regarding the changes to the LTIR policy and how it would affect the Stars’ efforts to replace Seguin.

If Seguin’s gone for the season, she speculates the Stars could trade for a forward with an expensive cap hit to replace him on the roster. If he is to return later this season, the Stars will have to be more conservative in their efforts to add to their roster.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Johnston noted that the Stars were reportedly among the clubs interested in Vancouver Canucks winger Kiefer Sherwood. His $1.5 million cap hit would make him a very affordable trade option.

RG.ORG: James Murphy reports the Stars and the Toronto Maple Leafs are showing a strong interest in Blake Coleman. The 32-year-old Calgary Flames winger is signed through 2026-27 with an AAV of $4.9 million and a 10-team no-trade list.

Murphy claimed the Utah Mammoth, Minnesota Wild, and Carolina Hurricanes have also been linked to Coleman. He believes the Flames winger could be a cost-effective option who could move earlier than more expensive teammates such as Rasmus Andersson and Nazem Kadri.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: If Seguin goes on SELTIR, the Stars will be in a better position to pursue Coleman than the cap-strapped Leafs. The Mammoth, Hurricanes, and Wild would be in an even better cap position and could have more tradeable assets to work with.

In today’s NHL Rumor Mill, a growing number of clubs are interested in Canucks winger Kiefer Sherwood, plus the latest on the rumor linking Penguins goalie Tristan Jarry to the Oilers.

CANUCKS WINGER KIEFER SHERWOOD DRAWING INTEREST IN THE TRADE MARKET

TSN: Pierre LeBrun reports there is plenty of interest in Kiefer Sherwood. The 30-year-old Vancouver Canucks winger is slated to become an unrestricted free agent in July. He has a team-leading 12 goals and carries an affordable $1.5 million cap hit.

LeBrun said the Minnesota Wild, Montreal Canadiens, and Dallas Stars were among a long list of clubs to express an interest in Sherwood. The Canucks aren’t rushing into this, as they intend to take their time evaluating the trade market. LeBrun wondered if some of those teams might be willing to sign Sherwood to a contract extension, which would increase his trade value for the Canucks.

SPORTSNET: Ryan Dixon looked at what impact Sherwood could have for the Philadelphia Flyers, New York Islanders, Boston Bruins, and Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Flyers could seek a short-term replacement for sidelined winger Tyson Foerster, while the Islanders could do the same for winger Kyle Palmieri. The Bruins need more secondary scoring, and the Lightning could use a little more experience with relative unknowns such as Gage Goncalves, Curtis Douglas, and Dominic James scattered throughout their lineup.

NHL.COM: Dan Rosen believes the Columbus Blue Jackets have a realistic shot at acquiring Sherwood. They’re in the hunt for the playoffs and could benefit from adding his gritty two-way game to their top-nine forwards. He also suggested Sherwood could make sense for the Flyers and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

THE ATHLETIC: Aaron Portzline confirmed that the Blue Jackets were among the teams to contact the Canucks about Sherwood, who is a Columbus native. He also doesn’t rule out the Bruins as a suitor, pointing out that Sherwood and Bruins forward Sean Kuraly are long-time friends.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Sherwood is the current standout in a thin trade market thus far. It’s understandable why the Canucks are taking their time as they’re hoping his value will improve. However, there is a danger that his performance (especially his offense) could drop off as the season progresses, as well as the risk of injury.

WOULD THE OILERS BE INTERESTED IN PENGUINS GOALIE TRISTAN JARRY?

NHL.COM: Dan Rosen was asked what level of interest the Edmonton Oilers could have in Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry.

Rosen believes the only way the Oilers make a move for Jarry is if they think he’ll backstop them to the Stanley Cup. He pointed out that they don’t know if he’d be worth the risk over the remaining two years of his contract, while they at least know what they have in current starter Stuart Skinner.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Jarry can blow hot and cold like Skinner, but the latter has carried them to two straight Stanley Cup Finals. Jarry also has an injury history that would be a concern for the Oilers.
