NHL Morning Coffee Headlines – May 10, 2024
The Rangers push the Hurricanes to the brink of elimination while the Stars tie their series with the Avalanche. Check out the details in today’s NHL Morning Coffee Headlines.
NHL.COM: The New York Rangers are on the verge of sweeping the Carolina Hurricanes following their 3-2 victory in Game 3 of their best-of-seven second-round series. Artemi Panarin scored in overtime while Igor Shesterkin kicked out 45 shots as the Rangers took a commanding 3-0 series lead, leaving them with a 7-0 record in this postseason thus far. Andrei Svechnikov had a goal and an assist for the Hurricanes, who will try to stave off elimination in Game 4 on Saturday, May 11 at 7 pm EDT.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Hurricanes are getting scoring chances but Shesterkin has been outstanding in goal for the Rangers. His 7-0 record in this postseason matches the Rangers’ postseason record set by Mike Richter in 1994.
Meanwhile, Blueshirts scorers Panarin, Chris Kreider, Mika Zibanejad, Vincent Trocheck and Alexis Lafreniere have risen to the occasion in this series.
Filip Chytil’s return to the lineup gave the Rangers an emotional lift. He’d been sidelined since Nov. 2 with a suspected concussion.
This game was a must-win for the Hurricanes. They find themselves in a deep hole that only four teams have climbed out of in Stanley Cup playoff history. They replaced Frederik Andersen in goal for this contest with Pyotr Kochetkov, who made 25 saves and couldn’t be faulted for this loss.
A powerless power play is a big reason the Hurricanes find themselves in this situation. They’ve gone 0-for-15 with the man advantage in this series. If they don’t rectify this problem, Saturday’s game will be their last of this season.
The Dallas Stars held off the Colorado Avalanche 5-3 in Game 2 of their second-round series. Roope Hintz had a goal and three assists and Miro Heiskanen tallied twice as the Stars evened the series at a game apiece. The Avalanche made it interesting, rallying with three goals to cut the Stars’ lead to 4-3 before Esa Lindell put the game out of reach with an empty netter. The series moves to Denver for the next two contests with Game 3 on Saturday at 10 pm EDT.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Hintz was due for a big game after managing just one point in eight postseason games. He certainly delivered in Game 2.
The Stars’ special teams went two-for-five on the power play and successfully killed off three penalties. They also got a lift with the return of Mason Marchment, who had an assist in his first game since being sidelined with an undisclosed injury suffered in Game 2 of their first-round series with the Vegas Golden Knights.
Given the Avs credit for not giving up after falling behind 4-0. However, their top offensive players (Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen and Cale Makar) were held scoreless in this contest.
DAILY FACEOFF: The Edmonton Oilers could face Game 2 against the Vancouver Canucks without Leon Draisaitl and Adam Henrique. Draisaitl is listed as day-to-day with an undisclosed ailment while Henrique is day-to-day with a lower-body injury. An update on their statuses is expected before tonight’s game.
What is it with these upper echelon playoff powerhouses blowing – or almost blowing – huge leads? Do they think the team they’re playing is there by accident? Some sloppy play by Dallas almost did them in.
The Rangers can put Shesterkin on one of those fan-boys pedestals.
If Carolina gets swept look for Brenda- mour train to head to Toronto! He has outlived his shelf life in Carolina !
NY can thank the Shesterkin Brick Wall for that win – 47 shots, many of them labeled. Brind’amour can’t do anything about that.
Carolina might out before there’s even a game 3 in Edmonton, amazing scheduling NHL.
Someone has to take the fall! They spent money on Orlov,Guentzel?Iwonder if Toronto has contacted him?Look at Toronto, some has to take the hit for the team!
Rod the Bod doesn’t seem like a guy who would enjoy the Toronto spotlight. Also thinks he really likes it in Carolina.
IMO he would the perfect coach for NJ. Young fast team with plenty of skill. Imagine them playing with the structure and tempo that the Canes do.
I would bet $20 he stays in Carolina
NYR & The Canes
Shesterkin was at the top of his game again last night he played Outstanding❗️ made 45 saves in the victory NYR d played very well,
Jackob Trouba is a one man Wrecking Crew out there…. That was a massive missed hit he made
The Canes young goaltender 24 yr old Pyotr Kotchetkov played very well also.
There big guys for the Canes the D & Forwards have to play Much better and step up if they want to go anywhere in the playoffs…..
i f not i see 3 changes in the top 9 and 2 changes in there top 6 coming up for next season…….❓
and
Back up young Pyotr Kotchetkov take over the Starter role for the Canes next season
The Oilers come out tonight and play a Much Better and tighter game tonight in Vancouver…
Tonight one of these guys will play
Leon Draisaitl and or Adam Henrique.👍
The Canes team play is always on and not easy to defend that pressure…
Last playoff you would say if they ONLY had Svech back and a proven sniper.
Well Svech and Guentzel have been effective and productive 5v5. If Guentzel didnt find ways to get open game 2 does not go to OT.
Svech was on both goals last night.
The Rangers did target Jarvis and Necas a lot early on and they have not been on the scoresheet yet.
Igor really is the difference here
Shesterkin has the Rangers up 3 games to 1, in a series that they should be trailing 2 games to 1.
Shesterkin is reminding people the difference in having a true #1 goalie in nets.
Yes Vegas won the cup without a true number #1 goalie, however history has shown having the #1 goalie will win you the cup more often then not having a number 1 goalie.
Rangers are going to be a tough out but I’m still sticking with Dallas to win the Cup.
If the Avalanche consistently stick to the defensive side of the game which they are not, they will win this series. If they don’t, they will lose. It is as simple as that?
Tommy,
you could well be right here…..
Stars are going to be a hard team to beat, the Oilers Aways have a tough time with them that makes me very worried 😳
Williew, I hear you! The Stars are very good but the Avalanche can beat them; however, you can’t wait until your in a 3-4 goal hole to beat anybody. That’s a recipe for disaster? I don’t care how good you are, that’a tough ask on a consistent basis. The Oilers also very good. The West is the best and a much tougher road to hoe, IMO. It’s one beast after another to get to the promise land. Anyone that emerges from that it is a major accomplishment: the speed and physicality are unbelievable!
Would it kill the hockey world to give NY any credit whatsoever without 30 disclaimers behind every win?
Yes, NY was outshot last night, grossly in the 1st period. But they are keeping a lot of those chances in this series on the perimeter.
Yes , Shesterkin has been beyond amazing. Zibanejad, Kreider , Trocheck, Panarin, Laffrienere have been outstanding in the playoffs. Coached very well, special teams have been outstanding.
All this and I believe 100% neither Fox or Trouba are playing healthy or near 100%.
I’ve been critical of this team this year, sometimes overly critical. But Jesus!
They’re outstanding.
Tremendous depth.
Hard to play against.
Guys who shine in big moments.
Stacked Defence.
Guys looking over their shoulders because of Trouba.
Best goalie in the league.
The Rags are a wagon.
Didn’t mean to disparage the Rangers in any way, CaptainObvious … was just amazed at Shesterkin’s composure throughout. And I do have them as the Eastern rep in the Cup finals (against Dallas).
And that pk unit is as dangerous as a pp – Zibanejad – the guy that got away in Ottawa (sigh) – almost had back-to-back short-handed goals.
A solid team up and down the ranks.
I didn’t mean you, or really anyone here in particular George. I do recall you had a Dallas / NY final?
I just mean generally.
Presidents trophy
First to clinch playoff spot
First to close out 1st round. (Sweep)
Held Ovechkin to 5 total shots.
Has been not only great at killing penalties, but have been extremely dangerous on the pk. 3-0 in the 2nd round, 7-0 in the playoffs. Going into yesterday’s game a 40% pp %.
And all people want to do is talk about Rempe, Panarins hit, how officiating is one sided (which is total BS) etc. Damn! What do they have to do to earn respect?
All that being said, this series isn’t over by a long shot. I would be shocked if Carolina doesn’t win game 4. I’m positive they’ll be coming harder than game 3. But right now NY has a VERY good team on brink.
Now I’ve probably just jinxed everything!
The New York Rodney Dangerfields.
Rodney Dangerfield was famous for one liners, that would make him more inline with Toronto, famous one rounders.
The Rangers get no respect.
I tell ya, CO, you missed that one.
Bruins defense tonight
Carlo 6’5″ 217
Forbort 6’4″ 216
Lindholm 6’4″ 224
Lohrei 6’5″ 211
Peeke 6’3″ 214
McAvoy 6’1″ 209
That’s good size on defense. Keep them away from Sway
Caper … if I may there’s no Miller or McQuaid in that group ….
Lol Joe, that’s why I only posted size.
McQuaid or Miller would be nice
Darth Quaider… knew how to use his hands … he didn’t lose many .. Miller was just nuts
There is a possibility that the eastern conference finals will be coached by the only two coaches in Carolina history that made it to the Stanley Cup finals.
