The Utah Hockey Club inadvertently scored its first-ever preseason goal into their own net but overcame that blunder to defeat the St. Louis Blues 5-3. Michael Carccone scored twice and Logan Cooley scored the winner on a penalty shot with 1:17 remaining in the third period.
Steven Stamkos scored in his preseason debut with the Nashville Predators but his club fell 6-2 to the Florida Panthers in a split-squad game at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise. The other Panthers squad nipped the Predators 3-2.
The New York Rangers got a goal and an assist from Filip Chytil in a 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Chytil is trying to get his career back on track after missing most of 2023-24 with concussion symptoms.
An overtime goal by Carter Yakemchuk lifted the Ottawa Senators to a 6-5 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Max Pacioretty scored twice and collected an assist and John Tavares had three assists for the Leafs.

HEADLINES
SPORTSNET: Oilers winger Evander Kane is not expected to return to action until January or February 2025. He underwent surgery on Friday to repair both hip abductors, two hernias, and two abdominal tears.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Oilers have over $945K in cap space to start this season. Kane has an average annual value of $5.125 million. They can place the 33-year-old winger on long-term injury reserve to add another player if that addition were to push them over the $88 million salary cap. However, they could try to avoid that as much as possible to accrue cap room during this season to put toward the March 7 trade deadline.
DAILY FACEOFF: Los Angeles Kings forward Arthur Kaliyev is sidelined indefinitely with a fractured clavicle. He suffered the injury during a scrimmage on Friday.
RG.ORG: Sergey Demidov reports Tony DeAngelo has signed a one-year contract with KHL club SKA St. Petersburg. The 28-year-old defenseman appeared in 31 games last season with the Carolina Hurricanes. He’s played 371 NHL games since 2016-17 with the Arizona Coyotes, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers and Hurricanes.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: DeAngelo has fine offensive skills but his defensive game needs work. He still carries some baggage from his emotional split with the Rangers in 2021.
THE HOCKEY NEWS: Adam Proteau believes the NHL could return to Arizona in a few years. He cited comments by Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly indicating his belief a team could succeed in that market under the right circumstances, those being the location and construction of an NHL arena.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The NHL allowed former Arizona Coyotes owner Alex Meruelo to land an expansion franchise if he located and built a suitable arena within five years. He’s since relinquished his rights to the Coyotes.
Watched the Boston – Ranger game and was really disappointed in Fabian Lysell!Merkulov was just a little better! Can t understand the hype on Lysell! Afraid he looks more like Jack Studnicka than David Pasternak!
Bit of a strange one last night between Ottawa and Toronto … insofar as early pre-season games usually go.
Except for Chabot the rest of the Ottawa D was made up of those hoping to impress while, except for Weber, the entire Leafs D consisted of regulars. Up front the Leafs dressed 8 of their projected regular line-up while Ottawa went with 5, the most prominent of which were Pinto and Batherson. The most unusual part – which you almost never see in an early pre-season tilt – is that Mads Sogaard played the entire game in goal, facing 37 shots and giving up all 5 goals, while the Leafs split the contest with Woll (23 shots – 3 goals 31.45 ice-time( and Murray (11 shots – 3 goals 29.21 ice-time).
As for the game itself, the high-scoring wasn’t all that unusual, and p.t.o. Max Pacioretty didn’t do himself any harm in getting a contract with his 2 goals 1 assist night. On the Ottawa side, p.t.o. RD Calen Addison turned in a solid evening playing 20.55 minutes, while 38 y/o p.t.o Nikolai Kulemin played 14.23, earning an assist.
By the way, that OT winner by prospect 1st rd pick (7th overall) Carter Yakemchuk was a thing of beauty

Long odds that he makes the team this season and if he doesn’t he has to go back to Major Junior. But even if he plays his way into the line-up this season, they’ll likely make him available for the World’s Juniors in December.
It was a beauty
McCabe looked like a big blue pylon on the OT goal!!!
Matthews & Marner’s effort was not much better.
I’m thinking the Coach was really impressed by it !!!
Tough to argue that Uwey, he was part of a set of 18 that started the game that way
Re Sen’s OT Goal last night…š²
Bye rookie d/man big Carter Yakemchuk lifted the Ottawa Senators to a 6-5 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
He went end to end, with his LONG reach beat 3 leafs and poped it in.š
George
i agree with you, He will need a year or so to continue to develope at 18 yrs old he need to continue to fill out
@ 6.ft3 & 205lb he is going to be a dandy for the Sens 100%
along with the 22 yr olds
Jake Sanderson & Tyler Kleven…š
Sens will have a Very Good young d/core with a couple more coming up
Some bright lights and some questions
Sogaard let in 5 goals last night….š©
Reinhardt had 4 points
Jenik a late PTO had 4 points
we will see if they can keep that up..?
williew. if you can see some videos of Yakemchuk playing in the WHL you’ll see that very move he put on McCabe repeated several times.
One thing he has to learn is that it won’t take long for the pros to form a “book” on him and if he tries that too often he’s going to start getting his pocket picked. What works consistently in junior, where 95% of the opposition will never see the pros, doesn’t usually translate well at the pro level IF you keep replying on it. MacCabe won’t forget that and you can bet he won’t ever fall for it again.
But from listening to him he seems to be a level-headed kid who will be easy to coach.
Also, just for the record, Jenik isn’t a p.t.o. They got him in a July trade with Utah in exchange for Egor Sokolov.
I was a bit surprised Toronto played so many vets in the first game. They don`t have anything to prove, while I realize they`re only playing 6 games this exhibition season and the need to get them some ice time is there. I was disappointed we didn`t get to see more of the kids trying to make an impression. I was impressed with several of the Ottawa kids. Jenin and Yakemchuk really stood out for me, while Grebenkin looks like a keeper for Toronto. Two bad signs for Toronto. First even under a new coach they still don`t know when the game starts and no part of Sid rubbed off on Marner despite training with him
Heh .. yeah … that was a lively scrap between Grebenkin and Gaudette … is he ticketed for the Marlies this season Yogi?
They expected him to start the year with Marlies to give him top 6 minutes and get used to smaller rinks. Plus the fact they want to give Cowan a few games this year, since they can`t send him to the Marlies. I think Grebenkin and Minten are both destined to start the year with the Marlies
For most kids starting off in the minors is the best for them. Not only do they get the ice time to develop properly, maybe get chances to be on the PP or PK they might not get from the start in the NHL. Plus I think it takes the pressure off of them on how well they perform in the beginning of their careers
Just remember people always say preseason doesnāt matter which might very well be true but one thing to keep an eye on is usually the first week of the preseason you hope your prospects make it hard to send them down and the second week you see the vets come into their own.
Other than that, I guess one can say the preseason isnāt anything useful to gauge the team in the same sense the first 10 games are usually sloppy hockey and a bad indicator of what a team is really like.
Hi George
I have seen him play in Calgary š
Big strides & long arm and stick, he also likes to thump the other team along the boards,
Both him and the Calgary pick at #9 will be great for a long time
I must of missed the Jenik tradeā¦..š¤
So a lot of this Swayman situation has to do with last years arbitration process which are seldom good ā¦ right now from here it looks like Swayman might not play hockey this year unless the Bruins cave because it looks like heās not going to
If Boston gives $8-10MM to someone who has yet to be a full time starter, the entire front office should be fired.
100% agree
Joe,
When season starts
After a 4-5 weeks of watching korposalo fall apartāļø
Boston will try hard get him signed
May only be a 3-4 year deal
As the cap keeps going up..š¤
Joe I Don t think Swayman is willing to lose a years service and keeping him 2 years from becoming an UFA!Has to sign by Dec. 1 in order to play in the NHL this year!
All this shouldāve been discussed with Sway before they traded Ullmark for pieces they didnāt need ā¦. Bad job by Bruins FO
35 y/o Goalie Aaron Dell’s bid to land a contract as a p.t.o. didn’t last long – just released by the Sharks even before he got a sniff in a pre-season game.
