The Jets, Stars, Flames and Golden Knights pick up their third straight wins to open the season. Check out the details and the latest injury updates, waiver news and more in today’s NHL Morning Coffee Headlines.

GAME RECAPS

NHL.COM: An overtime goal by Kyle Connor lifted the Winnipeg Jets past the Minnesota Wild 2-1. Mark Scheifele had a goal and an assist and Connor Hellebucyk made 26 saves for the win. Jake Middleton scored for the Wild while Filip Gustavsson stopped 33 shots.

Winnipeg Jets center Mark Scheifele (NHL Images).

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Jets are 3-0-0 partly because of Scheifele’s red-hot offensive play. He’s second in goals with four and points with six among all NHL skaters.

The Wild played without center Joel Eriksson Ek (broken nose) and defenseman Jared Spurgeon (lower-body injury). They also face a logjam in goal with Gustavsson, Marc-Andre Fleury and Jesper Wallstedt. That could result in Wallstedt bouncing between the Wild and their AHL affiliate for salary-cap reasons because he’s waiver-exempt this season.

The Dallas Stars picked up their third straight win by blanking the Seattle Kraken 2-0. Casey DeSmith turned in a 25-save shutout in his debut with the Stars while Sam Steel and Wyatt Johnston were the goal scorers.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Stars defenseman Matt Dumba missed this game with a lower-body injury suffered during Saturday’s game against the New York Islanders. He’s listed as day-to-day.

Calgary Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson had a goal and two assists in a 4-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers. Dan Vladar turned aside 25 shots while Anthony Mantha now has four points in his first three games with a goal in this contest. Jeff Skinner scored his first with the Oilers, who are still seeking their first win of the season. They had back-to-back goals called back for goaltender interference and offside.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Oilers remain out of sorts to start the season. They’re struggling partly due to the offseason departures of depth players Dylan Holloway, Philip Broberg, Warren Foegele, Ryan McLeod, Vincent Desharnais and Cody Ceci, who all played crucial roles in their march to the 2024 Stanley Cup Final.

One would expect the Flames to struggle this season after trading away key veterans like Jacob Markstrom, Noah Hanifin, Chris Tanev, Elias Lindholm, Andrew Mangipane and Nikita Zadorov throughout 2023-24. During training camp, center Nazem Kadri boldly stated his team would surprise folks this season. They’re doing just that thus far with a 3-0-0 start.

The Vegas Golden Knights are 3-0-0 after downing the Anaheim Ducks 3-1. Tomas Hertl snapped a 1-1 tie in the third period while Ilya Samsonov made 22 saves in his debut with the Golden Knights. Troy Terry replied for the Ducks.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Golden Knights center Jack Eichel collected an assist to sit atop the league’s scoring leaders with seven points.

IN OTHER NEWS…

STLTODAY.COM: Jordan Binnington holds the Blues franchise record for goalies with four season-opening wins. He’s also closing in on some other Blues goaltending milestones.

Binnington is tied with Curtis Joseph for third in games played and for second in starts with 275. With 146 wins, he’s two behind Jake Allen for second place and five away from career leader Mike Liut. He also needs 455 more saves to pass Joseph for second all-time.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Hockey-Reference shows Binnington now in sole possession of third place for games played by a Blues goalie with 282.

DAILY FACEOFF: The Detroit Red Wings placed goaltender Ville Husso on waivers. The Montreal Canadiens did the same with forward Alex Barre-Boulet.

CBS SPORTS: Red Wings forward Christian Fischer will miss Monday’s game against the New York Rangers with an upper-body injury. He’s listed as day-to-day.

BUFFALO HOCKEY NOW: The Sabres announced that the 2024-25 inductee into their Hall of Fame is former player and broadcaster Rob Ray. He spent 14 seasons and 889 regular-season games with the Sabres. He’s been part of their broadcast team since 2003-24.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Congratulations to Ray on receiving this honor. During his 16 NHL seasons with the Sabres and Ottawa Senators, he was a popular enforcer, amassing 3,207 PIMs in 900 total NHL regular-season games.

YARDBARKER: Former NHL forward Riley Sheahan announced his retirement at age 32. Sheahan spent 12 seasons in the NHL with the Red Wings, Pittsburgh Penguins, Florida Panthers, Oilers, Sabres and Kraken, amassing 74 goals and 120 assists for 194 points in 637 regular-season games and seven points in 33 playoff contests.

  1. Remember the Oil started 2-9 last year! Not ready to panic! Dallas backup goalie starts with a shutout! If that keeps up they will be very tough!Flames will come back to the pack eventually! Was Tkachuks illness the Stanley cup hangover last game?

    • Skinner has a GAA of 5.39 and a SV% of 0.809 while Picard has a GAA of 4.19 and a SV% of 0.778. They’ve allowed 14 goals in 68 shots. I would assume the panic is in full swing!

      • every Year from the AHL to his 3rd year n the NHL, Skinner has been a slow starter….
he picked it up after the 6-7mgame and gets on a roll….
But the oiler d has been Horable apart from Bouchard & Elohom Brent Kulak who has been solid
Nurse has looked horable again this year❗️

I thought they were going to give Ty Emberson a shot at the 2nd pairing RD Spot…?
its beeen musical d/men for the 2 RD spot on the 2nd and 3rd paring,….🤔

      • Might be a little early to panic but while Skinner is a hometown boy, he is not – and never has been – a true Number One.
The Oiler defense is spotty but the goaltending does not inspire much confidence at all and with the Oilers maxed out at the cap, the prognosis going forward is not very good.

  2. Have we went back to the toe in the crease rule ?
That Perry goal should be a goal 10/10 times and I suspect if it was any other name on the back of the jersey it’s a goal last night too.
If you have to review it for 5 minutes in the 3rd game of the year , it’s a goal .

    • Whine whine whine! He was in the blue paint. Flames are 3.0 mill over the cap floor versus the Oiler anointed already to winning the Cup. 1 close call disallowed goal shouldnt be the reason to lose to a deemed anointed bottom 5 lottery team, it seems kinda unbecoming. I recall a playoff series not so long ago where Coleman had a disallowed goal that was not too popular amonsgt Flame fans. Happens to all the teams.

      • I didn’t say anything about how it affected or didn’t affect the game . Setting that as the standard though is back to the toe in the crease days . Almost like I said in the first post potlicker .it will happen both ways over the course of the season but that’s a garbage standard for goalie interference early in the year .
Any review lasting more than 2 minutes in game 3 should be called as it was on the ice . 5 minutes in game 3 😂

    • hi François

its only Skinner 3rd year in the NHL, just turend 25… as i said he is a slow starter

The big problem same a last year in a Poor # 2 pairing Nurse and Cody Ceci… were not good Nurse had a Brutal year

Fast Forward to this year Nurse still looking Bad❗️
he needs a really good RD man to play with to cover his mistakes

with Evander Kane out till some time in February
the Oil should save $4.3 Mill in cap space this year
and they have +$1.M in cap space today looks like josh brown is not going to make the team i cant see him being traded.

in late Feb/March i see the Oil going after a 2nd pairing RD-man with term to fix this problem….🤔
like a 27 yr old Rasmus Andersson from the flames…

Next year I could see RD man 21 yr old Beau Akey making a run a getting on the team…..

  3. I was just about to comment that the so called brain trust of the Sabres are surely quietly ruing their alienation and trading of Eichel.

And then we read Rob Ray is inducted into the Sabres Hall of Fame

What more insight is needed to sum up one of the worst managed teams in the NHL?

    • You do realize that Rob Ray wasn`t inducted just because of his on ice career. 30+ years of service in one way or another to a team and community may not mean anything to you Lj, but to some it`s worth recognising what Ray`s put into those years. Now, I`m not a sabres fan by any means, I believe Ray`s a popular guy in Buffalo and has done lots for the team off the ice. Most teams hall of fame consists of builders, players and broadcasters, so I don`t know what your beef against Ray would be. Sabre fans could shed greater details on this. Did Ray offend you in some way, maybe beat you up a couple of times in the past. I dunno, I tip my hat to Ray and say congrats for 30+ years service

      • So Lj you have no real reason for slighting Ray and you didn`t like me commenting on that. Oh well too bad. If you don`t like the management or ownership in Buffalo, why take it out on Ray. If you don`t like people disagreeing with you, don`t post crap

      • True blue collar sports towns recognizing a figure who (despite my personal distaste for fighting in hockey) connected with the fans on and off the ice would be something certain entitled sports fans would be loathe to recognize.

  4. Although he only played 11 games for the Senators over the course of 2 seasons at the end of his career, Ray came across as a dedicated team player who only ever gave 100% of himself. Class act in the community.

As a bit of trivia, he’s also responsible for the so-called Rob Ray Rule which assigns a game misconduct to any player whose jersey is not properly attached to the pants and comes off completely in a fight.

    • One thing he was not, and that dirty. He was Buffalo’s enforcer when just about every team – if not every team – employed one. That was hockey at that time and he performed his duties almost to perfection.

Off-ice he was approachable, funny, articulate and you got the impression he was one of those who fought when he had to but never harbored any lingering “hate” for his opponents. Go at it til the officials broke it up … go to the penalty box and leave it at that.

  5. What an absolutely hairy game this afternoon between Ottawa and L.A. which, if nothing else, solidifies the notion that Forsberg is showing no signs of getting back to his pre-last season qualities as a back-up.

With Ullmark unable to answer the bell (no word yet on why), Mads Sogaard was an emergency call-up from Belleville and he was the back-up to Forsberg – who was pulled after allowing 3 goals on 9 shots. Sogaard wasn’t much better to the end, allowing 4 goals on 17 shots.

Thankfully, Norris scored his 2nd of the day at around the 1 minute mark of OT to win it for Ottawa 8-7. They, in turn, had fired 41 shits at Kuemper, who allowed all 8.

Ottawa fans had better hope it’s not something long-term with Ullmark, because any length of time with that tandem won’t be pretty because they sure as Hell won’t be scoring 8 goals a night!

Maybe it’s time to try and land a back-up who can be counted upon.
