The Red Wings’ hot start continues, the shorthanded Canucks outlast the Capitals, Panthers winger Brad Marchand fined, and more in today’s NHL Morning Coffee Headlines.

RECAPS OF SUNDAY’S NHL GAMES

NHL.COM: The Detroit Red Wings extended their win streak to five games (5-1-0) by doubling up the Edmonton Oilers 4-2. Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin led the way with two goals and two assists, and rookie center Emmitt Finnie tallied his first two NHL goals. Noah Philp and Leon Draisaitl replied for the Oilers, who’ve lost three of their first five games.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Detroit forward Lucas Raymond had two assists as he returned to action after missing two games with an injury. Teammate Patrick Kane missed this game with an undisclosed injury.

Vancouver Canucks defenseman Tyler Myers had a goal and an assist as his club held off the Washington Capitals for a 4-3 victory, snapping the latter’s four-game win streak. Center Elias Pettersson scored his first goal of the season, and Conor Garland collected two assists as the Canucks picked up their third win in their first five games. Tom Wilson and Dylan Strome each had two assists for the Capitals.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Wilson won’t receive supplemental discipline for leveling Filip Chytil with an open-ice hit in the first period that forced the oft-injured Canucks center from the game. The Canucks were already playing without winger Brock Boeser, and rookie forward Jonathan Lekkerimaki left the contest following a hard hit along the boards by Capitals defenseman Matt Roy.

The Capitals were missing one of their top-six forwards for this contest. On Saturday, they placed center Pierre-Luc Dubois (lower body) on injured reserve.

The Utah Mammoth nipped the Boston Bruins 3-2, handing the latter their fourth straight loss (3-4-0). Dylan Guenther snapped a 2-2 tie while teammates Clayton Keller and Nick Schmaltz each had two points for the Mammoth, who have won four of their first six games (4-2-0). David Pastrnak scored both Bruins goals.

An overtime goal by Ryan Donato lifted the Chicago Blackhawks to a 2-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks. Frank Nazar also scored for the 3-3-1 Blackhawks. Mason McTavish tallied for the Ducks, who’ve lost three of their first five contests.

IN OTHER NEWS…

NHL.COM: Florida Panthers winger Brad Marchand was fined $5,000.00 by the department of player safety for unsportsmanlike conduct during Saturday’s 3-0 loss to the Buffalo Sabres.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: In case you missed it, Marchand tangled with Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin. He took Dahlin’s helmet with him to the penalty box, where he ripped off its straps before tossing the straps and helmet onto the ice.

DAILY FACEOFF: The San Jose Sharks placed defenseman Shakir Mukhamadullin on injured reserve.

THE HOCKEY NEWS: Former NHL defenseman Oliver Kylington has returned to his native Sweden, signing with his hometown club Djurgarden IF in the Swedish Hockey League. Kylington, 28, had 60 points in 220 regular-season games with the Calgary Flames, Colorado Avalanche, and Anaheim Ducks from 2015-16 to 2024-25.

  1. How long before someone puts Marchand in a body cast? Watched his whole career here in Boston and I can t believe he hasn t been dealt with the old fashioned frontier justice way. Interesting game Tuesday when he makes his first trip to the Garden as a villain.Waiting for the signing of Jeannot to light a spark behind Boston s floundering start.

    • Jeannot played against was meh to say the least. Def not anything like Marchy at this stage of his career. No one has done that to Marchy because there are no old school players.

      • Marchy has been punched, cross checked and slashed as much as anybody in the NHL.

Just look at his beak and face?

Not saying he didn’t deserve it, he did and still does at times, just that he takes plenty of it coming back too. Pretty sure he understands how this works and he plays that way any how. .

    • Sr, I always thought that “frontier justice” would catch up with Bobby Clarke but it never happened – the Broad Street Bullies stuck together and protected him his whole career.
Even though he is a jerk, Marchand doesn’t shy away from the scrums. He stands up for himself and doesn’t look for his goon buddies to bail him out – unlike Clarke.

  2. Wilson lined up Chytil from the opposite wing and was committed to the check..strides before the glide. didnt hit direct to the head so that was good.. but the bad is Chytil is one hit away from retirement because of his past…. and he should know Wilson is there.

    • Ds Chytil got rid of the puck before Wilson ran him over. Could have veered off to the side instead of unloading!

      • It’s Wilson’s modus operandi

Separate the player from his head (or body).

        Paros loves Wilson

Parros fines Marchand for property damage and disrespect but by continuously turning a blind eye to the leagues top headhunter is welcoming (almost encouraging) a future career ending (perhaps life altering) hit.

Marchand may be a pest and a pernickety S
&$#t disturber but doesn’t have the complete internal drive of always wanting to severely injure that Wilson has.

      • We disagree on plenty of stuff on here 8787, but we agree on Wilson.

Another guy on this site used to say very similar things about Wilson, same type of language as well. I think his name was Pengy?

      • Many of us agree on Wilson (Ivan the Terrible) especially ALL Pens fans

We (Pens fans) need only cite Caps’ cup year and Wilson’s nigh decapitation (no call BTW) :

        https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DesV4FgSbsY

Note: Pens up 2-1; series tied 1-1. A proper 5 min PP and score likely at least 3-1

Instead Wilson contributed to the Winning and tying goals. Pens almost assuredly would have been up 2-1 in series. Instead; Caps won game 3 and series and went on to win cup

The above video is why all Pens fans feel the same about Wilson

  3. How bout dem Wings!?

    (crickets)

    Yeah.

    • Johnny Z,happy for Larkin. I thought he was the best player for the US in last years 4 nations tourney.

      • Everyone kept saying he was not a 1C, I think he has done fine in that role.
He did have a bit of a slump after 4 nations. And the Y criticism at season’s end caused fall out. But that emotion when channeled in the right direction can cause him to shine.

  4. I love that they kept the kids up instead of getting them extra ready in GR. They’ve been injecting energy into the team as a whole. And Kane has been his usual electric self. I’m hopeful that McClellan’s coaching will keep them dialed in all season, we have to avoid those 7 game losing streaks that have doomed us the past two years!!
