The latest on Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, Blue Jackets center Adam Fantilli, and Kraken center Shane Wright in today’s NHL Rumor Mill.
THE ATHLETIC: Murat Ates and Matthew Fairburn recently examined what a hypothetical trade sending goaltender Connor Hellebuyck from the Winnipeg Jets to the Buffalo Sabres would look like.

Hellebuyck, 33, was linked to the Sabres before last month’s NHL Draft weekend. The two clubs were reportedly close to a deal, but the Jets refused to part with the eighth overall pick.
Ates and Fairburn believe the Jets would covet a Sabres forward such as Josh Doan or Zach Benson. However, they speculate that a return of forward Ryan McLeod and a “substantial secondary piece” could be viewed as a success for the Jets.
The Sabres would likely prefer parting with futures such as draft picks and prospects. Their selection of defenseman Daxon Rudolph could make them more willing to part with prospect blueliner Radim Mrtka. They could also part with their 2027 first-round pick.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: It remains to be seen if the Jets and Sabres can work out a deal involving Hellebuyck. Nothing seems imminent, but we have seen significant trades occur during training camp or preseason in September.
Hellebuyck has five years left on his contract, so the Jets aren’t in a hurry to trade him. They can take their time and wait for the right offer. It also buys them time for Hellebuyck and his teammates to bounce back this season, reducing any pressure to move him.
THE ATHLETIC: Aaron Portzline looked at how the new contracts for Anaheim Ducks center Leo Carlsson (five years, $18 million average annual value) and Chicago Blackhawks center Connor Bedard (five years, $15 million AAV) could affect the Columbus Blue Jackets’ efforts to re-sign center Adam Fantilli.
Like Carlsson and Bedard, the 21-year-old Fantilli is a restricted free agent coming off his entry-level contract. As much as Carlsson’s new deal seemed to blow up the market for young RFAs, Portzline suggested Bedard’s contract might tilt it back the other way. It could also set the parameters for Fantilli’s new deal.
Portzline cited a league source, who said an eight-year contract is unlikely to be Fantilli’s new term. It’s more likely that he’ll give a five-year term like Carlsson and Bedard.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Going for the shorter term could become a trend for good young RFA players. It doesn’t lock them into a deal for too long, enabling them to negotiate for a more lucrative contract sooner.
As for what Fantilli receives for an AAV, it could be between $12 million and $13 million, unless a rival club pushes it higher with an offer sheet. It was assumed Fantilli would be the Philadelphia Flyers’ alternate target when the Ducks matched their offer sheet for Carlsson, but they were reportedly only interested in Carlsson.
THE SCORE: cited The Athletic’s Josh Yohe, who reports the Pittsburgh Penguins are intrigued by the idea of trading for Seattle Kraken center Shane Wright.
Wright, 22, has reportedly been on the block since the March trade deadline. Yohe also noted that former Kraken general manager Ron Francis has returned to the Penguins’ organization, and he knows Wright well.
Yohe noted that the Kraken have set a high asking price for Wright, which could put him outside the Penguins’ comfort zone.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Kraken are reportedly working with Wright’s agent to find a suitable trade destination. However, they won’t be pressured into accepting a lower return. This could carry over into the regular season.
The Sabres goaltending was fantastic last year. I don’t see the value of them going after Helle. Seems like the return demands are way too high. Helle is great but he’s 33 going on 34 and he’s numbers are down. I’m hoping if this trade goes down it is something like UPL, a 1st and a B-prospect or forward…Like Krebs.
Dude, Helle is 1 year removed from winning the Hart trophy and is the prime reason that the US even got to OT to be able to win the gold medal.
Not sure what a trade will look like if it does happen I have to think it will be more significant than UPL and Krebs.
33 not that old. Freddy Anderson(36)started 16 of 19 playoff games for SC champs Carolina. Bobrovsky(35/36) won previous 2 cups. Hellebuyck will be 37 in last year of his contract. Having a goalie with multiple Vezinas for 5 seasons is a no brainer.
Not if they are supposedly asking as much as these recent rumors would indicate. Hellebuyck is worth a lot, but only up to a point. And if the deal was to be made, it would have already happened. I do not see this happening, not to Buffalo.
They should have gone after Bob.
with the departure of Tuch & Byram Buffalo has bigger holes other than goaltending. Lyon & UPL played great last year.
Was it a typo that Buffalo was looking to acquire Hellebuyck AND #8 overall in the same trade?
That’s a big ask. Must have been a much larger package than what’s floating around.
Yes Daryl, the original package had multiple assets going back and forth. I believe Buffalo would still like to have Hellebuyck, I just do not think the teams will agree on what’s going back to the Jets
Hellebuyck had had poor playoff performances.
Goalies just do not have windfall’s for returns. Chevy will take his sweet time and that may hurt the Jets in this case.
If they can get Mrta and a first and another asset …take it
What has Wright done.? Appreciate he is a Covid baby but not even a spectacular junior career . Albeit limited watching him I have not even noticed him in Kraken games

Asking price is high and rightly so…good contract and term for the best tender in the league…if the ask for Hellebyuck and the 8th is correct you need a boatload to make that happen
SilverSeven, I agree 100%. His agent has him and the Kraken thinking he is worth more than he is. In this column my comparable is Jack Roslovic. Does anyone else have a comparable. Would be interesting to know!
Seattle acquired former 2nd overall pick Kakko from Rangers for 2nd pair Dman Borgen plus 3rd and 6th rd picks. Does Wright bring back more or less than that, idk. Carolina still has Kotkaniemi. Another guy drafted high who hasn’t panned out. Maybe he goes to Seattle and joins his fellow Finn, Kakko. Would think Canes would need to add a sweetener based on salaries and age. Wright still has some upside. Perhaps Rod could get more out of him.
Not sure why everyone is down on Wright. Had 44 points in his rookie year including 19 goals playing 14 minutes a night.
Like a lot of young players they take a step back in their second year.

The question on Wright is why does Seattle think he’s worth a lot if he’s a bottom 6 player on a poor team.
His value isn’t his draft pick number, it’s his play on the ice since he joined the NHL.
Habsfan30 this is what I do not understand…at all. What is the source of the issue between wright and Seattle. What is Lambert’s hesitance in using wright as a top 6 option on a team that struggles to score? Is it something about his on ice game.that he doesnt like or is it his attitude/some off ice stuff? Does Seattle simply not think he is the player that potted 19 goals and 44 pts in his 1st full season?
I get wright’s frustration…Seattle struggles to score, he proved to be a viable and productive top 6 option under Bylsma but seldom afforded the opportunity under lambert. His two way game continues to capable for that of a younger player.
But then it gets more confusing as Seattle doesnt feel he is a solution to their offensive woes but wants a return as if he is going to be just that for someone else.
Weird situation.
Baniers hasn’t developed as projected under the kraken management. Maybe it is a little of both the player and the hockey development and wright just needs a fresh start.
I feel wright can pan out like chinakov in pitts.
