NHL Morning Coffee Headlines – March 22, 2022
Recaps of Monday’s games, the stars of the week are revealed, Evgenii Dadonov trade held up by the league, plus some notable contract signings, injury news and waiver moves overshadowed by yesterday’s trade deadline in NHL morning coffee headlines.
GAME RECAPS
NHL.COM: Nashville Predators winger Filip Forsberg scored twice and collected three assists in a 6-3 victory over the Anaheim Ducks. Matt Duchene tallied two goals and added an assist as the Predators sit in third place in the Central Division with 78 points. Ducks winger Troy Terry netted his 30th goal of the season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Sidelined since March 8, Ducks winger Jakob Silfverberg is listed as week-to-week with a blood clot in his right leg. It is being managed and he could return to action before the end of the season.
The league-leading Colorado Avalanche (95 points) opened a five-point lead over the Florida Panthers in the overall standings by beating the Edmonton Oilers 3-2 on an overtime goal by Mikko Rantanen, who finished the night with two goals. Kailer Yamamoto had a goal and an assist for the Oilers (75 points) as they sit one point behind the second-place Los Angeles Kings in the Pacific Division.
Brad Marchand scored twice, including the winner in overtime, to lead the Boston Bruins over the Montreal Canadiens 3-2. Canadiens goaltender Jake Allen made 43 saves. With 83 points, the Bruins hold a three-point lead over the Washington Capitals for the first wild-card berth in the Eastern Conference.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Before the game, the Bruins signed winger Jake DeBrusk to a two-year contract extension with an annual average value of $4 million. The 25-year-old DeBrusk requested a trade in November so this move caught many observers by surprise. I’ll have more about this in today’s Rumor Mill.
Minnesota Wild goaltender Cam Talbot turned in a 28-save shutout to blank the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0. Nicolas Deslauriers scored the winning goal in his first game with the Wild since being acquired from the Anaheim Ducks over the weekend. With 78 points, the Wild are tied with the Nashville Predators but hold second place in the Central Division with two games in hand. The Golden Knights, meanwhile, cling to the final Western Conference wild-card berth with 72 points.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks earlier in the day, Marc-Andre Fleury suited up for the Wild as Talbot’s backup.
HEADLINES
NHL.COM: 33 trades involving 54 players were made leading up to yesterday’s 3 pm ET trade deadline.
LAS VEGAS SUN: The NHL’s Central Registry is holding up a trade that would send winger Evgenii Dadonov from the Golden Knights to the Anaheim Ducks. The issue involves Dadonov’s 10-team no-trade, with reports indicating the Ducks were on that list. It’s uncertain if the winger agreed to accept a trade to Anaheim.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli reports Dadonov filed his 10-team no-trade list last summer while a member of the Ottawa Senators. The Golden Knights appear to be claiming they didn’t receive his no-trade list from the Senators when they acquired him in July.
NHL.COM: Nashville Predators captain Roman Josi, Winnipeg Jets winger Kyle Connor, and Arizona Coyotes winger Lawson Crouse were named the NHL’s three stars for the week ending March 20, 2022.
NEW YORK POST: The Islanders signed forward Cal Clutterbuck to a two-year contract extension worth an annual average value of $1.75 million and winger Zach Parise to a one-year extension worth $1.5 million.
NHL.COM: The Ottawa Senators inked goaltender Anton Forsberg to a three-year extension worth an annual cap hit of $2.75 million.
TSN: Speaking of goalies getting new three-year contracts, Karel Vejmelka agreed to one with the Arizona Coyotes worth $2.725 million annually.
PHILLY HOCKEY NOW: Flyers defenseman Ryan Ellis will miss the remainder of the season with what’s believed to be a hip/groin injury. He appeared in just four games with the Flyers.
WASHINGTON HOCKEY NOW: Capitals winger Carl Hagelin will undergo a second surgery for an eye injury suffered on March 1. There is no timetable for his return.
TORONTO SUN: Maple Leafs defenseman Rasmus Sandin was placed on long-term injury reserve with a knee injury.
NEW YORK POST: Rangers forwards Kaapo Kakko (wrist injury) and Kevin Rooney (upper-body injury) remain sidelined for the remainder of March.
THE HOCKEY NEWS: The Arizona Coyotes claimed goalie Harri Sateri off waivers from the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Seattle Kraken claimed defenseman Derrick Pouliot from the Vegas Golden Knights, and the Vancouver Canucks claimed forward Brad Richardson from the Calgary Flames.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas wasn’t pleased with the Coyotes plucking Sateri away after the Leafs signed him on Sunday to a one-year contract. However, the Coyotes were well within their rights to do so.
A player who skated in a European league during the season who signs with an NHL club must first clear waivers before he can join that team. Dubas knew this but I suspect he was hoping Sateri would pass unnoticed through waivers.
Ok…. Loads of trades… some good, some bad…. Some coming in (well announced) more than an hour after “closing time”
The absolute strangest of all is the Domi deal
Did Waddell send two horses heads …. One to Jarmo one to Zito?
Why is Zito helping Waddell , holding 25%?
Waddell gets Domi at only 25% Cap hit and gives up 2 prospects… that just may be permanent fixtures in the AHL …. At best…AND receives a prospect
The give by Waddell:
1. soon to be 26… Korshkov…. 1 NHL game in …. Tall but thin…. Looks like he has had a middling career in the KHL…. to Panthers for retaining 25% of Domi’s hit
2. 3rd rounder LD In ‘21 …. Hrshek to Clb
But Waddell got Innamotto …. LD…. 5th round ‘17…. 5th year at Univ of Wisconsin
If Korshkov and Innamotto are a saw off or close to (in value)…..Waddell got Domi at 25% for Hrshek …… wow….. and he got a Div rival…. (And a team he just might have to go through to try and win the cup) to eat 25%!!!!
So…. Jarmo moves Domi , retains 50%….. and only gets Hrshek?????
Panthers had the space (LTIR)… but helped a rival…. AND End up paying ~ $340 K (after allowing for escrow)…. To only get a KHL middling player (would he be allowed to play in the AHL this year?

After all is said and done with all of the trades… still looking like the SCF will have flights between the Mile High City and the State of Florida…. with a chance …. Just maybe….of a SCF series played near the foothills of the Canadian Rockies
Upsets can, have, and will happen…. But if NONE of Cats, Bolts, Avs, OR Flames are in the ‘22 SCF…. Multiple big big upsets happened
Watched the Avs/Oil game last night.
Fast paced, very exciting to watch
Great OT goal….. but…. I’m sure Oil fans are freaking…. Kadri rips off Nurse’s helmet…. No call… since Nurse’s helmet is off; by rule he must leave ice…. And that’s the only reason Mac K and Makar get the 2 on 1 v McD to score the OT winner.
If refs do their job… Kadri gets a penalty…. 4 on 3 PP goes to Oil instead of an OT loss
Refs are inconsistent crew to crew; game to game; period to period.
Failing to call penalties late in games or OT….. costly… very costly at times
This is reg season…. But could have happened in playoffs
I’ve no vested interest in this particular missed call as this was Oil v Avs game…. Had that missed call been by on opponent in a Leaf’s or Pens game…. I’d be peeved

Ya, refs missed some out there and saw some that were, uhhh questionable, but to be fair to them some COL guys embellished. At least they called one guy for diving.
If COL isn’t the best skating team in the NHL they are close. For a team that skates that well they sure go down easy. They would be wise to remember what the refs did with VCR in 2011 finals when they embarrassed the refs. They stopped believing them, and the B’s took advantage of it.
Oil hung with them all night even with the bad breaks, if they get some tending, watch out, but that is the big question.
Smith even looked good for 2nd game in a row?
I have no idea how Yamamoto got a penalty at the same time when Makar got the diving penalty. 5 Avs power plays to 2 Oilers power plays. SMH
It was a good game and the Oilers held their own against the best team in the NHL. The Oilers did hold the Avs to their second lowest 5on5 shots for total this season.
Did not see Edmonton/Ave, but Rangers…/Islanders/ Lightning/Carolina, IMO were 3 crazy good games.I told my son, all 3 were “barn burners”!

To me… no one should count out Rangers….Many cup runs are on the shoulders of a goalie that shuts the door…. Shesterkin scares the crap out of me
He alone could have Pens out first round….making Pens 2nd given up (Rackell) all for not
I can envision Rangers over Canes; and if it’s Cats (instead of Bolts) out of ATL…. Shesterkin out-duelling Bobo…. Not unrealistic
That would leave Rangers likely v AvsorFlames…. and I can perceive Rangers over Flames (but not Avs)
Wild have gone all in …. They had to… next three years ~ $12M, $14 M, $14 M in dead cap… loaded, great team…. But Wild beating BOTH Avs and Flames before likely meeting Bolts…. and then shutting down Bolts from a 3-peat…. Hard to see

Then Cats
Then Rangers
I actually think that Pens getting out of Metro, and meeting Cats (where Cats won’t walk over them), then miraculously facing Avs or Flames…. Has a more likely chance (albeit extremely small) than Wild beating Avs, AND then Flames

Rangers against Islanders/Lightning/Carlina, IMO, were crazy good, playoff type games, and Georgiev (!) was nuts against Carolina. Roll on Rangers!

AND without another player going on LTIR and/or deal going through (thus getting Kessler) …. not enough space for Stone to come off LTIR (IF he was healthy enough to do so)

Pengy, now Vegas is trying to blame it on Ottawa, saying that they didn’t send them his 10-team no-trade list when he was dealt to Vegas. Seems to me that something like that would be confirmed by his agent at the very least.

I don’t share that same sentiment. Ny did a great job addressing secondary scoring this week, while also opening up all sorts of options.
If they click, NY could be very dangerous. But I don’t hold out hope that Sheterkin can carry them through multiple rounds.
We just witnessed for a decade plus that doesn’t work with Lundqvist. Granted, for the better part of his career was a very different team, and many of those years coached by Torterella. But if this team can’t score 5 on 5, get some secondary scoring going, they’re not going very far imo.
They were VERY luck to come away from Tampa and Carolina with 2 wins. Neither was deserved.
33%+ of all team goals coming off only 2 sticks, constantly being outplayed, out shot. Inability to score 5 on 5, relying too much on that pp, 21 come from behind wins is not a good recipe for going deep.
Could they steal a round? Absolutely. But if they fail to cure these issues going into the playoffs, I just can’t see them passing any combination of Florida, Tampa or Carolina.

Kadri still has zip, Todd face-off guy; having good year…. It’ll come down to wether he wants to stay with the powerhouse Avs and take a home-town discount (Avs would still need to move EJ)
On the open market… term and AAV vs…. How long will he stay at this level (if at all); how much of his success this year is due to the team he’s on and line mates he has
