NHL.COM: A hat-trick performance by Owen Tippett carried the Philadelphia Flyers to a 5-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings. Tippett finished with four points, and Dan Vladar made 32 saves for the 35-24-12 Flyers (82 points), who are five points out of the final Eastern Conference wild-card berth. Patrick Kane and Moritz Seider each had two assists for the Red Wings (39-25-8), who are one point out of that wild card with 86 points.

Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Emil Lilleberg had a goal and two assists as his club overcame a 2-0 deficit to double up the Ottawa Senators 4-2. Brandon Hagel and Charle-Edouard D’Astous each had a goal and an assist for the 45-21-6 Lightning, who sit in second place in the Atlantic Division with 96 points. Dylan Cozens and Jordan Spence scored for the Senators (38-25-10), who sit one point out of the final Eastern wild-card with 86 points.

Montreal Canadiens winger Cole Caufield sniped his 45th goal of the season in a 4-1 victory over the Nashville Predators. The Canadiens’ second line of Ivan Demidov, Oliver Kapanen, and Alex Newhook each had a goal and an assist as the Habs (41-21-10) picked up their fourth straight win and sit third in the Atlantic Division with 91 points. Zachary L’Heureux scored for the 34-30-9 Predators, who cling to the final Western wild card with 77 points.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson collected an assist to become the third defenseman in NHL history to record multiple 60-assist seasons before the age of 23, joining Hall of Famers Paul Coffey (three seasons) and Bobby Orr (two seasons).

The Winnipeg Jets are getting closer to a Western Conference wild-card spot with a 4-2 upset of the league-leading Colorado Avalanche. Cole Perfetti snapped a 2-2 tie in the third period while Gabriel Vilardi had a goal and an assist for the 31-30-12 Jets (74 points), who moved within three points of the Predators. Brock Nelson and Parker Kelly replied for the 48-14-10 Avalanche (106 points).

A five-goal second period vaulted the New York Islanders over the Florida Panthers by a score of 5-2. Brayden Schenn had a goal and two assists for the Islanders (42-27-5) as they moved into second place in the Metropolitan Division with 89 points. Matthew Tkachuk scored both goals for the 35-34-3 Panthers.

Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid had a goal and two assists as his club held off the Anaheim Ducks 4-2. Zach Hyman had a goal and an assist while Jack Roslovic tallied his 20th goal of the season for the 37-28-9 Oilers, who hold second place in the Pacific Division with 83 points. Beckett Sennecke and Cutter Gauthier tallied for the Ducks (41-28-4), who hold first place in that division with 86 points.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Ducks winger Troy Terry returned to the lineup after missing one game with a lower-body injury. Teammates Radko Gudas and Pavel Mintyukov missed this contest with lower-body injuries.

Dallas Stars winger Mikko Rantanen had a goal and an assist after missing 15 games with a lower-body injury in a 6-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Mavrik Bourque scored twice and picked up an assist, and Jason Robertson had a goal and an assist for the Stars (44-18-11), who remain in second place in the overall standings with 99 points. Erik Karlsson had a goal and an assist for the 36-21-16 Penguins, who are clinging to third place in the Metropolitan Division with 88 points.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Penguins played without Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin as both are day-to-day with injuries.

Boston Bruins winger David Pastrnak collected two assists to extend his points streak to 12 games to help his club beat the Minnesota Wild 6-3. Pavel Zacha and Elias Lindholm each tallied twice for the 41-24-8 Bruins, who hold the first Eastern wild-card berth with 90 points. Mats Zuccarello and Ryan Hartman each had a goal and an assist for the Wild (41-21-12), who sit third in the Central Division with 94 points.

The Carolina Hurricanes scored five straight goals in a 5-2 win over the New Jersey Devils. Nikolaj Ehlers and Shayne Gostisbehere each had a goal and an assist for the Hurricanes (46-20-6), who hold first place in the Eastern Conference with 98 points. Timo Meier and Evgenii Dadonov replied for the 37-33-2 Devils.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Gostisbehere returned from a nine-game absence with a lower-body injury.

San Jose Sharks rookie winger Igor Chernyshov scored twice (including the game-winner) for his first NHL multi-point game to nip the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-2. Macklin Celebrini had a goal and an assist for the 33-31-7 Sharks (74 points), who snapped a six-game skid to sit four points out of the final Western wild card. Denton Mateychuk and Cole Sillinger scored while Elvis Merzlikins stopped 33 shots for the Blue Jackets (38-24-11), who slipped into the final Eastern wild card with 87 points.

The Buffalo Sabres overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Seattle Kraken 3-2 on a shootout goal by Tage Thompson. Rasmus Dahlin scored his 100th career NHL regular-season goal while Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen turned aside 32 shots for the 45-21-8 Sabres, who remain in first place in the Atlantic Division with 98 points. Chandler Stephenson and Bobby McMann each had a goal and an assist for the Kraken (32-29-11) as they sit two points out of the final Western wild card with 75 points.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Sabres rookie Noah Ostlund could be sidelined longer than expected with an upper-body injury. Meanwhile, Kraken center Shane Wright left this game in the first period with an undisclosed ailment.

Utah Mammoth forwards Alexander Kerfoot and Logan Cooley each tallied two goals to defeat the Los Angeles Kings 6-2. Mikhail Sergachev collected four assists as the Mammoth (37-30-6) remains in the first Western wild card with 80 points. Anze Kopitar and Adrian Kempe scored for the 29-25-18 Kings (76 points), who are one point out of the final Western wild-card berth.

The Washington Capitals blew a 3-0 lead but rallied from a 4-3 deficit for a 5-4 shootout victory over the Vegas Golden Knights. Dylan Strome scored the tying goal and the winner in the shootout for the 36-28-9 Capitals. Jack Eichel had a goal and two assists for the Golden Knights (32-26-16), who have lost six of their last seven games but remain third in the Pacific Division with 79 points.

St. Louis Blues winger Dylan Holloway had a goal and an assist in a 5-1 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Jordan Kyrou and Jake Neighbours each had two assists for the 31-30-11 Blues (73 points), who sit four points out of the Western wild-card spot. Jake McCabe replied for the 31-30-13 Maple Leafs.

The Calgary Flames pounded the Vancouver Canucks 7-3. Matt Coronato and Morgan Frost each had a goal and two assists for the 30-34-8 Flames. Center Elias Pettersson picked up two assists for the 21-42-8 Canucks.

OLYMPIC MEN’S HOCKEY NEWS

TSN: Canadian center Connor McDavid has a chance to record the most points in one Olympic Men’s hockey tournament during Friday’s semifinal game against Finland. He’s currently tied the record of 11 points set by Finland’s Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu in the 2006 Winter Olympics.

SPORTSNET: Team Canada coach Jon Cooper didn’t rule out Sidney Crosby returning to the lineup in this tournament. The Canadian captain left his team’s quarterfinal game against Czechia with a lower-body injury.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Crosby is expected to have a quick skate Friday morning to see how he feels. TSN’s Ryan Rishaug reported it’s unlikely that he’ll be suiting up for the game against Finland. If so, his spot will be taken by Nick Suzuki while McDavid will take over as captain in his absence.

Cooper also didn’t rule out sidelined defenseman Josh Morrissey rejoining the club for Friday’s game.

TSN: Canadian center Sam Bennett said he missed Wednesday’s quarterfinal game with an illness. However, he’s ready to go for Friday’s game against Finland.

NHL.COM: Team USA continues to be inspired by the legacy of the late Johnny Gaudreau. His No. 13 Team USA jersey hangs in their dressing room for this tournament, as it did in the 4 Nations Face-Off and the 2025 IIHF World Championships.

NHL.COM: Montreal Canadiens winger Juraj Slafkovsky is leading the next generation of hockey talent for Slovakia. Youngsters such as Slafkovsky, St. Louis Blues forward Dalibor Dvorsky, and New Jersey Devils defenseman Simon Nemec have starred for the underdog Team Slovakia as they face the United States in the semifinal on Friday.

THE HOCKEY NEWS: Speaking of Dvorsky, he continues to shine in this tournament. The 20-year-old winger has three goals and three assists in four games.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Slovakia’s bronze-medal performance in 2022 was downplayed by critics because there were no NHL players in that Olympic Men’s hockey tournament. They’ve silenced that criticism this year. Win or lose on Friday, they’ve exceeded expectations.

TORONTO STAR: Anton Lundell revealed a bout of norovirus kept him out of Finland’s final preliminary round game. The Florida Panthers winger returned to action on Wednesday to help the Finns advance to the semifinal against Canada on Friday.

DETROIT HOCKEY NOW: Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan said winger Lucas Raymond and defenseman Moritz Seider will rejoin their teammates next week. He told both players to take a few days to rest after Germany and Sweden were eliminated from the Olympic Men’s hockey tournament on Wednesday. “We want them fresh and recovered,” McLellan said.

TSN: Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Chris Tanev has been skating in recent days. However, it remains unclear whether he’ll be returning to their lineup following the Olympic break. The 36-year-old Tanev has been limited to 11 games by injuries this season.

THE HOCKEY NEWS: St. Louis Blues winger Dylan Holloway admits he returned from a high-ankle sprain in January too soon. He’s now deemed fit to return to action when the Blues resume their schedule on Feb. 26 against the Seattle Kraken.

BUFFALO HOCKEY NEWS: A lower-body injury cost Sabres goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen an opportunity to play for Finland in the 2026 Winter Olympics. He’s now returned to practice and hopes to help his club clinch its first playoff berth in 14 years.

The quarterfinal matchups are set for Olympic Men’s hockey, Jeff Skinner becomes a free agent, Patrik Laine is injured again, and more in today’s NHL Morning Coffee Headlines.

QUARTERFINAL MATCHUPS SET FOLLOWING QUALIFICATION ROUND ACTION

NHL.COM: Switzerland blanked Italy 3-0 in qualification round action on Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinal round against Finland.

Nico Hischier had a goal and two assists while goaltender Leonardo Genoni made 20 saves for the shutout. Damian Clara stopped 48 shots for Italy.

Sweden will meet the United States in the quarterfinal after defeating Latvia 5-1.

Lucas Raymond had three assists, while William Nylander, Mika Zibanejad, and Gabriel Landeskog each had a goal and an assist for the Swedes. Eduards Tralmaks replied for Latvia.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Following Tuesday’s action, Raymond sat second to Canada’s Connor McDavid in tournament scoring with eight points. The Swedes raised eyebrows by scratching defenseman Rasmus Andersson and Jesper Bratt from this game. Some observers believe they’re saving them for the quarterfinal.

Germany beat France 5-1 to face Slovakia in the quarterfinal.

Leon Draisaitl had a goal and two assists, and Philipp Grubauer stopped 30 shots for the Germans. Pierre-Edouard Bellemare scored for France in what proved to be his final game as the former NHL forward announced his retirement following this contest.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: As I write this, Germany is down 4-1 to Slovakia after two periods in their quarterfinal game.

Bellemare’s teammate Pierre Crinon faces prosecution back home in France for punching a goaltender in the face during a game last November. Earlier this week, he was suspended from the remainder of the tournament by the French National Olympic and Sports Committee for fighting Canada’s Tom Wilson during Sunday’s games between the two nations.

Czechia will face Canada for the second time in this tournament after holding off Denmark by a score of 3-2.

Martin Necas and Roman Cervenka each had a goal and an assist while Lukas Dostal turned aside 24 shots for Czechia. Frederik Andersen made 28 saves for Denmark.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Czechia forward Radek Faksa suffered an upper-body injury in this game and will not be in the lineup for today’s game against Canada.

OLYMPIC MEN’S HOCKEY NOTES

TSN: Team Canada forwards Nathan MacKinnon and Sam Bennett skipped practice on Tuesday. Head coach Jon Cooper said they were taking time for maintenance, adding that there wasn’t any cause for concern. Both players are expected to be in the lineup for their quarterfinal game against Czechia.

DAILY FACEOFF: Team USA winger Kyle Connor is expected to be a healthy scratch from today’s game against Sweden. His ice time steadily diminished in his first two games, and he was scratched from their game against Germany.

IN NHL NEWS…

SAN JOSE HOCKEY NOW: Jeff Skinner is no longer with the Sharks. He cleared unconditional waivers on Tuesday, resulting in his contract being terminated by mutual agreement. The 33-year-old winger is now an unrestricted free agent.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It’ll be interesting to see if he signs with another NHL club this season. He’ll have to do so before the March 6 trade deadline to be eligible to skate in the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

DETROIT HOCKEY NOW: Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson resumed practice with his teammates on Tuesday. He’d missed their last seven games before the Olympic break with a lower-body injury.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Edvinsson, 23, has been an invaluable part of the Red Wings’ blueline. As the article observed, they’re 3-5-2 in the 10 games he’s missed during this season.

TSN: Patrik Laine missed practice on Tuesday as he’s listed as day-to-day with a lower-body injury. The 27-year-old Montreal Canadiens winger has been sidelined since Oct. 16 after undergoing core muscle surgery.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Laine has surfaced recently in the rumor mill as a trade candidate. However, his ongoing injury issues could ensure that he finishes the season in Montreal.

RECAPS OF TUESDAY’S GAMES

NHL.COM: The Tampa Bay Lightning (36-14-4) remained atop the Eastern Conference with 76 points following a 4-3 overtime win over the Buffalo Sabres. Jake Guentzel tallied the game-winner while Nikita Kucherov extended his points streak to nine games with a goal and three assists. Mattias Samuelsson tallied twice for the 32-18-6 Sabres.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Lightning have been red hot since Dec. 20, going 18-1-1 in their last 20 games.

Buffalo Sabres goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen’s lower-body injury will force him to miss the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics. Team Finland named Boston Bruins goaltender Joonas Korpisalo as Luukkonen’s replacement.

Carolina Hurricanes forward Seth Jarvis scored two goals, and team captain Jordan Staal snapped a 3-3 tie to nip the Ottawa Senators 4-3. Sebastian Aho netted his 20th goal of the season and collected two assists for the Hurricanes (35-15-6) as they kept pace with the Lightning with 76 points. Jake Sanderson had a goal and an assist for the 27-22-7 Senators as their four-game win streak ended.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Hurricanes lead the Metropolitan Division. They are second in the Eastern Conference because the Lightning holds two games in hand.

The New York Islanders got two goals and an assist from Bo Horvat, including the winner in overtime, in a 5-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Mathew Barzal had a goal and two assists, and rookie defenseman Matthew Schaefer had a goal and an assist for the 31-21-5 Islanders. Justin Brazeau had a goal and an assist, and Anthony Mantha tallied his 20th goal of the season for the Penguins (28-15-12).

Elvis Merzlikins made 24 saves to backstop the Columbus Blue Jackets to their sixth straight win by shutting out the New Jersey Devils 3-0. Mathieu Olivier tallied twice for the Blue Jackets (28-20-6), who are 9-1-0 in their last 10 games. Jacob Markstrom stopped 23 of 25 shots as the 28-26-2 Devils have dropped four of their last five contests.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Before this game, the Blue Jackets announced the promotions of Rick Nash to director of player personnel and development and Chris Clark to assistant general manager. Clark retains his position as GM of their AHL affiliate in Cleveland.

The Toronto Maple Leafs got two goals from Matias Maccelli in a 5-2 upset of the Edmonton Oilers. John Tavares tallied the winning goal as the Leafs (27-21-9) picked up their third straight win. Jake Walman and Kasperi Kapanen replied for the 28-21-8 Oilers.

A power-play goal by Jamie Drysdale snapped a 2-2 tie as the Philadelphia Flyers doubled up the Washington Capitals 4-2. Rasmus Ristolainen had a goal and an assist for the Flyers (25-20-10) as they ended a four-game winless skid (0-3-1). Anthony Beauvillier had a goal and an assist for the 28-23-7 Capitals as their three-game win streak ended.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Before this game, Flyers general manager Daniel Briere addressed the “noise” regarding recent critical comments by head coach Rick Tocchet regarding winger Matvei Michkov’s conditioning at the start of the season and his ice time.

Briere stated that Michkov isn’t going anywhere, explaining that the sophomore winger is going through the usual ups and downs that young players encounter early in their careers. He said Michkov and Tocchet have a good relationship, and that the club is doing everything it can to help the youngster succeed.

The Anaheim Ducks defeated the Seattle Kraken 4-2, snapping the latter’s four-game win streak. Lukas Dostal made 26 saves while Jansen Harkins and Jackson LaCombe each collected two assists for the 30-23-3 Ducks. Jordan Eberle and Tye Kartye replied for the Kraken (26-20-9).

HEADLINES

FLORIDA HOCKEY NOW: Panthers center Sam Bennett has been named to Team Canada as a replacement for sidelined Tampa Bay Lightning center Anthony Cirelli.

THE PROVINCE: Vancouver Canucks center Filip Chytil is sidelined indefinitely amid concerns he’s suffered another concussion after leaving Monday’s game against the Utah Mammoth.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Chytil has suffered several concussions during his NHL career. It’s reached the point where he must seriously consider ending his playing career for the sake of his long-term health.

DAILY FACEOFF: The San Jose Sharks placed forward Ryan Reaves (upper body) on injured reserve.

MONTREAL HOCKEY NOW: The Canadiens placed winger Sammy Blais on waivers. If he clears, he’ll report to their AHL affiliate in Laval.

THE ATHLETIC: In the latest player poll by The Athletic, Quebec City came second as the city that those polled believed should be the next to get an NHL franchise.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Quebec City is a great hockey town with an NHL-ready arena, but it’s also too small for the league’s taste. The only way they’ll get a franchise is if there becomes an urgent need to relocate one, and that’s a long shot at best.

TORONTO SUN: Former NHL defenseman Jim Morrison passed away at the age of 94. He spent nearly seven of his 12-season NHL career with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Morrison’s first tenure in the league was from 1951-52 to 1960-61 with the Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, and New York Rangers. After several seasons in the AHL with the Quebec Aces and Baltimore Clippers, he spent two seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins from 1969-70 to 1970-71.

In 704 NHL regular-season games, Morrison had 40 goals and 160 assists for 200 points, and 12 points in 36 playoff games.

NHL.COM: Steven Stamkos scored the tying and winning goals as the Nashville Predators erased a 5-1 deficit to defeat the St. Louis Blues 6-5. Ryan O’Reilly also tallied twice, and Roman Josi collected four assists for the 26-23-6 Predators. Pavel Buchnevich had two goals and an assist while Jordan Kyrou and Jake Neighbours each had three points for the Blues, who dropped to 20-27-9.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Stamkos has 27 goals in 55 games, matching last season’s output in 82 games. He also moved into the top-20 among the all-time regular-season goal scorers with 609, sitting third among active scorers.

The Washington Capitals netted four unanswered goals in a 4-1 victory over the New York Islanders. Nick Dowd had a goal and an assist, and Clay Stevenson made 29 saves for the 28-22-7 Capitals, who picked up their third straight win. Mathew Barzal scored for the Islanders (30-21-5).

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin had an assist to reach 1,670 career-regular-season points, putting him in fifth place among NHL players with the most points with one franchise. Gordie Howe is the leader with 1,809. Meanwhile, Capitals defenseman Matt Roy returned to action after missing three games with a lower-body injury.

Utah Mammoth forward Nick Schmaltz had a hat trick and collected an assist to lead his club over the Vancouver Canucks 6-2. John Marino had three assists for the Mammoth (29-23-4). Teddy Blueger had a goal and an assist as the Canucks have one win in their last six games (1-4-1), dropping to 18-32-6.

The Buffalo Sabres got 38 saves from Alex Lyon in a 5-3 win over the Florida Panthers, handing the latter their fourth straight loss. Peyton Krebs had a goal and two assists for the Sabres (32-18-5), who’ve won six of their last seven contests. Sam Reinhart collected two assists for the 28-24-3 Panthers.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Panthers forward Sam Bennett left this game with an upper-body injury. After the game, Panthers winger Matthew Tkachuk acknowledged his injury-ravaged club is in trouble as they try to remain in the playoff race in the Eastern Conference. With 59 points, the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions are eight points out of a wildcard berth.

The Sabres didn’t emerge unscathed from this game, as forward Zach Benson departed in the third period with an upper-body injury.

Ottawa Senators forward Claude Giroux scored the winning goal to nip the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2. Drake Batherson had two assists as the Senators (27-21-4) extended their win streak to four games. Arturs Silovs made 28 saves, and Egor Chinakhov had a goal and an assist for the 28-15-11 Penguins as their six-game win streak ended.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Penguins disputed Giroux’s goal, claiming it was goaltender interference as the Senators forward crashed into Silovs after the latter made the save, dislodging the puck and knocking the net off its moorings. Following a lengthy review, it was determined to be a goal, and Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson was penalized for tripping Giroux.

The Detroit Red Wings blanked the Colorado Avalanche 2-0. John Gibson got the shutout with 21 saves while Marco Kasper and Lucas Raymond scored for the 33-18-6 Red Wings, who ended a three-game winless skid (0-2-1). Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 23 of 24 shots for the 36-9-9 Avalanche, who lead the league with 81 points, but have one win in their last four games.

Minnesota Wild winger Kirill Kaprizov scored twice, including the winner in overtime, in a 4-3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens. Quinn Hughes had three assists for the Wild (33-14-10), who picked up their fourth straight win. Brendan Gallagher, Ivan Demidov, and Kirby Dach replied for the 31-17-8 Canadiens, who are 3-0-1 in their last four games.

An overtime goal by Thomas Harley lifted the Dallas Stars over the Winnipeg Jets 4-3 to extend their win streak to five games. Mikko Rantanen, Matt Duchene, and Miro Heiskanen each had two points for the Stars (33-14-9). Cole Perfetti and Gabriel Vilardi each had a goal and an assist for the 22-25-8 Jets.

Chicago Blackhawks forwards Ryan Donato and Ilya Mikheyev each had four points in a 6-3 win over the San Jose Sharks. Jason Dickinson and Connor Murphy each collected two points for the 22-25-9 Blackhawks as they ended a five-game winless skid (0-3-2). Macklin Celebrini had a goal and an assist for the Sharks (27-23-4) as they’ve gone 0-2-1 in their last three games.

The Toronto Maple Leafs doubled up the Calgary Flames 4-2. William Nylander had a goal and two assists for the 26-21-9 Maple Leafs. Nazem Kadri had a goal and an assist for the Flames (22-27-6) as they are 1-4-2 in their last seven contests.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly missed this game with an upper-body injury and will also sit out their next game against the Edmonton Oilers.

HEADLINES

THE TENNESSEAN: Barry Trotz announced Monday that he will be stepping down as general manager of the Nashville Predators. He will remain in his position until a successor is chosen.

Trotz said he made this decision for family reasons and has no plans to return to coaching. He stated that he informed the Predators’ ownership that he was contemplating retirement when his contract expired at the end of next season.

Predators majority owner Bill Haslam said they were not pushing Trotz out of the job. “He came to us (in December) and said he wanted to retire after his contract,” Haslam said. “After some back and forth, we decided to go ahead and be transparent about it.” He also indicated that the decision was not a reflection of Trotz’s job performance.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Trotz has his priorities in order. Family should always come first.

Trotz is one of the greatest coaches in NHL history. He won the Jack Adams Award twice and coached the Washington Capitals to the Stanley Cup in 2018. However, the Predators’ record since he took over as GM in 2023 has been uneven.

The Predators reached the playoffs in 2024 following a late-season surge but were eliminated in the opening round by the Vancouver Canucks. Trotz made a big splash in the 2024 free-agent market, signing Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault, and Brady Skjei, but they failed to qualify for the postseason last year.

After stumbling through the opening two months of this season, they’ve moved to within three points of a wildcard berth in the Western Conference.

NHL.COM: Seattle Kraken winger Jared McCann, Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy, and Philadelphia Flyers winger Travis Konecny are the league’s three stars for the week ending Feb. 1, 2026.

TSN: Edmonton Oilers goaltender Calvin Pickard cleared waivers on Monday and will report to their AHL affiliate in Bakersfield.

Panthers center Sam Bennett returns from a memorable summer, former Stars coach Peter DeBoer regrets singling out Jake Oettinger following the club’s playoff elimination, the Flyers trade goalie Ivan Fedotov to the Blue Jackets, and more in today’s NHL Morning Coffee Headlines.

FLORIDA HOCKEY NOW: After a memorable summer, Sam Bennett is excited about the upcoming season with the Panthers.

The 29-year-old center won the Conn Smythe Trophy (the first player to do so in franchise history) as he led the Panthers to their second straight Stanley Cup championship. He then signed a new eight-year contract with the club and married Zoe, his partner in Humane Society adoptions.

Bennett isn’t concerned about the short offseasons that he and his teammates have had since reaching the 2023 Stanley Cup Final. “You get to stay in shape a lot easier,” he said. “You don’t have as much time to get out of shape.”

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Panthers enter this season hoping to become the first team since the 1982 New York Islanders to win three straight Stanley Cups. That team would win four straight from 1980 to 1983.

However, winning their third straight Cup could be the most challenging for the Panthers. The toll of those long seasons and shortened summers could catch up with them, plus they’ll be without left winger Matthew Tkachuk until January as he recovers from injuries incurred during last season. As of July 1, the Panthers also had one of the oldest rosters heading into 2025-26.

NHL.COM: Former Dallas Stars head coach Peter DeBoer said he doesn’t regret pulling goaltender Jake Oettinger early in Game 5 of the 2025 Western Conference Final against the Edmonton Oilers. However, he regrets how he handled the narrative after the Stars were eliminated following a 6-3 loss to the Oilers.

“Listen, we were all to blame for coming up short again, and it starts with me,” DeBoer told NHL.com’s Mike Zeisberger. “It was on me, it was on the coaches, it was on all the players, it was on the organization as a whole. We all created the disappointment. We were all to blame, not just one guy.”

When all the postgame questions were about Oettinger, DeBoer felt he should’ve redirected the topic to stress that it wasn’t about the goaltender, but the entire team.

After losing that series, the Stars fired DeBoer, replacing him with Glen Gulutzan. However, DeBoer remains one of Canada’s assistant coaches for the 2026 Winter Olympics.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: DeBoer has a strong regular-season record and also guided the 2011-12 New Jersey Devils and the 2015-16 San Jose Sharks to the Stanley Cup Final. He’ll land with another NHL team in the near future, perhaps a little wiser from his mishandling of the situation during his final game with the Stars.

THE ATHLETIC: The Philadelphia Flyers traded goaltender Ivan Fedotov to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. The Jackets are taking on his full $3.275 million cap hit, though he’s owed just $775K in base salary.

Aaron Portzline writes that Fedotov is being brought in to add depth to the Jackets’ goaltending position. It’s expected that Jet Greaves will back up starter Elvis Merzlikins. Kevin Kurz reports the move clears a logjam between the pipes for the Flyers, who added Dan Vladar with a two-year contract earlier this summer.

ESPN.COM: Greg Wyshynski reported Washington Capitals assistant coach Mitch Love was placed on a team-imposed leave of absence pending results of an NHL investigation.

Wyshynski indicated that an NHL source stated the league received a letter detailing allegations related to Love’s personal conduct during his interviews for coaching jobs with rival clubs during the offseason. Two of the teams with whom he reportedly interviewed received similar letters. The allegations predate his tenure with the Capitals.
