NEW JERSEY HOCKEY NOW: James Nichols weighed in on a recent rumor suggesting the Devils may be interested in Nashville Predators forward Steven Stamkos.

Nichols noted that the Devils were among the few suitors for Stamkos when he went to free agency in July 2024. While his production has declined with the Predators, it could improve playing with the Devils, where he’d have playmakers such as Jesper Bratt and a healthy Jack Hughes to set him up.

Nevertheless, a Stamkos trade would be a risky move. He’s 35, with two years remaining on his contract, which carries an average annual value of $8 million. A potential trade would require the Predators to retain some salary, which means increasing the compensation going to Nashville.

Nichols wondered if a prospect such as Seamus Casey and two second-round draft picks would be enough to land Stamkos.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Devils have been struggling to score lately, partly because Hughes is sidelined with an injured hand. Once he returns, they could still seek a reliable scorer.

Stamkos probably isn’t the only one they’re considering, assuming he’s willing to waive his no-movement clause to go to New Jersey. Management will likely remain patient and see what other options emerge in the trade market as more teams fall by the wayside in the playoff chase.

TVA SPORTS: CHEK-TV’s Rick Dhaliwal claimed the Montreal Canadiens and Minnesota Wild are two teams with an interest in Kiefer Sherwood. The 30-year-old Vancouver Canucks winger is eligible for unrestricted free-agent status next July, and the two sides aren’t any closer to a contract extension.

The Canucks recently scouted the Canadiens during their game against the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday. They’re interested in getting a young player in exchange for Sherwood, and Dhaliwal wondered if they might target someone like Canadiens winger Zack Bolduc.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Canadiens are interested in adding to their forward line, preferably a second-line center. However, giving up the 22-year-old Bolduc (who was acquired from the St. Louis Blues last summer) for the 30-year-old Sherwood goes against the Habs’ habit of bringing in players in their twenties with term remaining on their contracts.

The Canadiens probably prefer to offer up a draft pick or prospect for Sherwood. If the asking price is Bolduc, they might look elsewhere for help at forward.

TSN: Darren Dreger believes Alex Formenton could become an offer-sheet candidate next summer.

The 26-year-old Ottawa Senators forward is a restricted free agent who is now ineligible to play in the NHL this season because he wasn’t signed by the Dec. 1 deadline for an RFA contract.

In September, Senators general manager Steve Staios said Formenton would not be returning to the club, as both sides believed it was best for him to have a fresh start elsewhere. Staios attempted to trade Formenton this fall, but couldn’t find any takers.

RECAPPING WEDNESDAY’S GAMES

NHL.COM: Washington Capitals rookie Ryan Leonard had two goals and two assists in a 7-1 drubbing of the San Jose Sharks. Alex Ovechkin tallied twice, and Matt Roy collected three assists for the Capitals (17-9-2), who picked up their sixth straight win and sit atop the Eastern Conference with 36 points. Pavol Regenda replied for the Sharks, who slipped to 13-12-3.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Capitals’ John Carlson and Justin Sourdif missed this game due to injuries, while Nic Dowd returned to action after missing eight games with an injury. Meanwhile, the Sharks sent rookie center Michael Misa to their AHL affiliate on a conditioning stint.

The Utah Mammoth crushed the Anaheim Ducks 7-0. JJ Peterka led the way with two goals and two assists, Clayton Keller had a goal and two assists, and Karel Vejmelka made 27 saves for the shutout as the Mammoth (13-12-3) snapped a four-game losing skid. The Ducks dropped to 16-10-1, but remain in first place in the Pacific Division with 33 points.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Ducks’ regular goalie tandem of Lukas Dostal and Petr Mrazek is sidelined by injuries, forcing the club to turn to call-ups Ville Husso and Vyacheslav Buteyets.

Dallas Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger turned in a 30-save shutout to blank the New Jersey Devils 3-0, extending the Stars’ road point streak to 12 games. Miro Heiskanen, Jamie Benn, and Esa Lindell each collected two points, and Roope Hintz picked up an assist for his 400th career NHL regular-season point. The Stars improved to 18-5-5, while the Devils (16-10-1)dropped their third straight game.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Before this game, the Stars announced that forward Tyler Seguin could miss the remainder of the regular season with an ALC injury in his right knee.

A shootout goal by Cole Caufield lifted the Montreal Canadiens to a 3-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets. Caufield also collected an assist in regulation to extend his points streak to nine games, and Jakub Dobes made 29 saves for the Canadiens (14-9-3), ending a two-game losing skid. Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor each had a goal and an assist, and Eric Comrie also had 29 saves as the Jets (13-12-1) have lost six of their last seven games.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Canadiens honored former defenseman Andrei Markov with a pregame ceremony. Markov played 990 games for the Canadiens in his 16-season NHL career, and has the second-most career assists (453) among their defensemen. He received a standing ovation from Montreal fans that lasted over two minutes.

Meanwhile, Jets defenseman Neal Pionk returned to action after being sidelined for a week with a lower-body injury.

The Philadelphia Flyers scored three first-period goals in less than a minute as they defeated the Buffalo Sabres 5-2. Bobby Brink, Travis Konecny, and Noah Cates each had a goal and an assist for the 15-8-3 Flyers, who’ve won six of their last eight games. Jason Zucker and Bowen Byram replied for the Sabres, who dropped to 11-12-4.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin was ejected from this game late in the second period for boarding Flyers forward Trevor Zegras. Flyers defenseman Cam York left the game after the second period for undisclosed reasons.

IIHF.COM: Former NHL forwards Thomas Vanek (Austria), Patrice Bergeron (Canada), and defenseman Niklas Kronwall (Sweden) are among seven players to be inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame in the Class of 2026.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: A well-deserved honor for Vanek, Bergeron, and Kronwall, who represented their countries in various international tournaments.

DAILY FACEOFF: Matt Larkin reports NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said there won’t be any NHL players participating in the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics if the arena is not completed in time for the Games.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Team Canada assistant coach Pete DeBoer raised eyebrows earlier this week when he said that the rink surface would be smaller than those in NHL arenas. It’s been reported that there is no “Plan B” if the arena isn’t ready.

CNBC’s Mike Ozanian reports Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon is close to selling a significant stake in the team, which is currently valued at $2 billion. Dundon is in the process of purchasing the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers for over $4 billion.

In today’s NHL Rumor Mill, a growing number of clubs are interested in Canucks winger Kiefer Sherwood, plus the latest on the rumor linking Penguins goalie Tristan Jarry to the Oilers.

CANUCKS WINGER KIEFER SHERWOOD DRAWING INTEREST IN THE TRADE MARKET

TSN: Pierre LeBrun reports there is plenty of interest in Kiefer Sherwood. The 30-year-old Vancouver Canucks winger is slated to become an unrestricted free agent in July. He has a team-leading 12 goals and carries an affordable $1.5 million cap hit.

LeBrun said the Minnesota Wild, Montreal Canadiens, and Dallas Stars were among a long list of clubs to express an interest in Sherwood. The Canucks aren’t rushing into this, as they intend to take their time evaluating the trade market. LeBrun wondered if some of those teams might be willing to sign Sherwood to a contract extension, which would increase his trade value for the Canucks.

SPORTSNET: Ryan Dixon looked at what impact Sherwood could have for the Philadelphia Flyers, New York Islanders, Boston Bruins, and Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Flyers could seek a short-term replacement for sidelined winger Tyson Foerster, while the Islanders could do the same for winger Kyle Palmieri. The Bruins need more secondary scoring, and the Lightning could use a little more experience with relative unknowns such as Gage Goncalves, Curtis Douglas, and Dominic James scattered throughout their lineup.

NHL.COM: Dan Rosen believes the Columbus Blue Jackets have a realistic shot at acquiring Sherwood. They’re in the hunt for the playoffs and could benefit from adding his gritty two-way game to their top-nine forwards. He also suggested Sherwood could make sense for the Flyers and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

THE ATHLETIC: Aaron Portzline confirmed that the Blue Jackets were among the teams to contact the Canucks about Sherwood, who is a Columbus native. He also doesn’t rule out the Bruins as a suitor, pointing out that Sherwood and Bruins forward Sean Kuraly are long-time friends.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Sherwood is the current standout in a thin trade market thus far. It’s understandable why the Canucks are taking their time as they’re hoping his value will improve. However, there is a danger that his performance (especially his offense) could drop off as the season progresses, as well as the risk of injury.

WOULD THE OILERS BE INTERESTED IN PENGUINS GOALIE TRISTAN JARRY?

NHL.COM: Dan Rosen was asked what level of interest the Edmonton Oilers could have in Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry.

Rosen believes the only way the Oilers make a move for Jarry is if they think he’ll backstop them to the Stanley Cup. He pointed out that they don’t know if he’d be worth the risk over the remaining two years of his contract, while they at least know what they have in current starter Stuart Skinner.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Jarry can blow hot and cold like Skinner, but the latter has carried them to two straight Stanley Cup Finals. Jarry also has an injury history that would be a concern for the Oilers.

The latest on Rangers winger Artemi Panarin, plus updates on the Canucks and Canadiens in today’s NHL Rumor Mill.

PANARIN NOT RULING OUT RETURNING TO RUSSIA

NEW YORK POST: Mollie Walker recently reported that Rangers winger Artemi Panarin did not shoot down recent speculation suggesting he might return to Russia after this season.

Panarin, 34, is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent next summer. He’s in the final season of a seven-year contract with an average annual value of $11.6 million.

“I mean, you never know,” Panarin said when asked about the RG.Org report. “Hard to say right now. It’s a very hard question, to be honest. I can’t comment on the side of life, you never know what’s happening.”

Walker noted that Panarin’s age means the Rangers won’t want to commit to a long-term deal, and Panarin won’t accept a significant pay cut on what would become his last contract. She believes a significant portion of this decision will depend on how the rest of this season unfolds for the Rangers.

If they’re out of a playoff spot by the March 6 trade deadline, general manager Chris Drury could look at Panarin’s value in the trade market. If they remain in contention, Drury will likely retain the playmaking winger for the postseason.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Panarin’s status will remain a topic of interest in this season’s rumor mill. There’s also no certainty that he’ll return to Russia if he doesn’t sign an extension with the Rangers.

Panarin could become the top player in next summer’s UFA market. He could end up on a short-term deal for roughly the same AAV as his current contract with another club.

THE LATEST CANUCKS SPECULATION

THE PROVINCE: Ben Kuzma reports the Boston Bruins have reportedly shown an interest in Vancouver Canucks winger Conor Garland and superstar defenseman Quinn Hughes. They’re also among at least eight teams that have kicked tires on UFA-eligible winger Kiefer Sherwood.

Kuzma believes the Philadelphia Flyers could also look into Garland’s availability, citing the latter’s closeness with Flyers coach (and former Canucks bench boss) Rick Tocchet.

Garland’s six-year contract extension begins on July 1, when his AAV will rise to $6 million and he’ll have a full no-movement clause. However, Kuzma believes the biggest hurdle would be the Canucks’ asking price. They want younger, established NHL players in return.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported the Canucks were fielding offers for UFA-eligible players and those with less than two years remaining on their contracts. That would rule out Garland, but we can’t dismiss the possibility that he’ll be moved before next July if someone is willing to make a significant offer.

TEAMS CALLING ABOUT CANADIENS DEFENSEMAN KAIDEN GUHLE

RG.ORG: Marco D’Amico reports teams have contacted the Montreal Canadiens about Kaiden Guhle. The oft-injured 23-year-old defenseman is in the first season of a six-year contract with an AAV of $5.5 million, and lacks no-trade protection until 2029-30.

Despite his injury history, Guhle has drawn interest from rival clubs in multiple offseasons. However, the Canadiens aren’t parting with him because of his physicality, mobility, and defensive value.

The Canadiens could move a defenseman for a high-end top-six forward. D’Amico believes Arber Xhekaj, Jayden Struble, and Adam Engstrom could become trade candidates as their blueline depth grows, pointing out that those three have drawn interest from different clubs. Alexandre Carrier could also become a trade chip once David Reinbacher is ready to move up into the Canadiens’ lineup.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: D’Amico noted that the Canadiens aren’t in a rush to move out any of those defensemen. Nevertheless, he didn’t rule out the possibility of one of them getting traded if they get an offer of a top-six forward.

The latest on Predators winger Steven Stamkos and Canucks defenseman Quinn Hughes in today’s NHL Rumor Mill.

SUGGESTED LANDING SPOTS FOR STAMKOS

SPORTSNET: Ryan Dixon proposed five potential trade destinations for Nashville Predators winger Steven Stamkos.

Dixon acknowledged the decline in the 35-year-old Stamkos’ production since last season. He doubted that a club would have to make a significant offer to Nashville to get him, especially if they can swing it without asking the Predators to retain part of his $8 million cap hit through 2027-28.

The Montreal Canadiens are atop Dixon’s list of sensible landing spots, followed by the Winnipeg Jets, Seattle Kraken, Carolina Hurricanes, and Detroit Red Wings.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: What wasn’t mentioned was Stamkos’ full no-movement clause. He’ll have the final say over possible landing spots, and there’s only one on this list that seems the most likely.

Recent reports also claim the Predators haven’t spoken with the aging star about a trade, though some observers believed they could entertain offers for him, Jonathan Marchessault, and Ryan O’Reilly.

The Canadiens were rumored to have inquired about Stamkos, but that may have been due diligence on their part. If Stamkos passed on signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2016 because of all the attention he would’ve faced in that hockey-mad market, it’s doubtful he’ll be keen to come to Montreal, or any other Canadian market.

The Kraken could use a scoring star, and if Stamkos were five years younger, they’d probably jump on an opportunity to get him if he wanted to go to Seattle. But he’s no longer that scoring star, so he’s not a good fit there, and the same applies to Montreal and Winnipeg.

As for the Red Wings, they could use a boost to their secondary scoring, but defense remains their Achilles heel, and Stamkos can’t help them in that department.

That leaves the Hurricanes as the only sensible spot on this list. They’re in “win-now” mode and might benefit from Stamkos’ Stanley Cup experience. However, their pursuit of Mikko Rantanen and Mitch Marner last season indicates that they want younger scoring stars in their prime.

COULD THE FLYERS PURSUE QUINN HUGHES?

PHILLY HOCKEY NOW: William James noted the recent speculation swirling around Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes. The Canucks are in sell mode with some of their veteran players, and while they’re not shopping the 26-year-old defenseman, some observers feel they could peddle him if he’s unwilling to sign a contract extension next summer.

James noted the New Jersey Devils are considered the front-runners for Hughes, setting up a reunion with brothers Jack and Luke. However, hockey insider Frank Seravalli suggested the Philadelphia Flyers could be among the suitors if the former Norris Trophy winner becomes available.

According to James, it would take a package offer consisting of top draft picks, a top prospect, an NHL defenseman, and a winger to land Hughes. He doesn’t see the Flyers including winger Matvei Michkov and prospect Porter Martone in that deal.

THE ATHLETIC: Kevin Kurz reports no one has told him that the Flyers would pursue Hughes if the Canucks put him on the trade block, but he thinks they could to land a player who could accelerate their rebuild.

Kurz believes Michkov, Martone, and Tyson Foerster are the only untouchables on the Flyers. He thinks it doesn’t make sense to part with players who seem destined to be part of the solution to upgrade another position. Instead, they could draw on their four first-round picks and their second-rounders over the next three years as trade chips.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It remains to be seen whether Hughes re-signs with the Canucks or gets traded next summer to a club that he’s willing to sign with. It wouldn’t be surprising if they look into the asking price for Hughes, but the Canucks could insist on Michkov or Martone being part of the return. If they’re untouchable, then the Flyers have slimmer odds of landing him.

The Wild ended the Avalanche’s long win streak, Penguins captain Sidney Crosby reached another scoring milestone, the Canadiens re-signed Mike Matheson, the Flames re-signed general manager Craig Conroy, and more in today’s NHL Morning Coffee Headlines.

NHL.COM: The Minnesota Wild extended their win streak to seven games with a 3-2 shootout victory over the Colorado Avalanche, ending the latter’s win streak at 10 games. Jesper Wallstedt kicked out 39 shots, Kirill Kaprizov tallied twice (including his 200th career goal), and Matt Boldy scored the winning goal for the 14-7-4 Wild. Nathan MacKinnon scored his league-leading 19th goal for the Avalanche (17-1-6), who picked up a point and sit atop the overall standings with 40 points.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Earlier in the day, the Wild placed forward Marcus Foligno on injured reserve.

Sidney Crosby scored two goals and Kris Letang tallied in overtime to lift the Pittsburgh Penguins over the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-3. With the win, the Penguins improved to 12-6-5. Zach Werenski had a goal and an assist for the 11-9-5 Blue Jackets, who are winless in their last four games (0-2-2).

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Crosby scored his 640th career regular-season NHL goal, moving past Dave Andreychuk into 15th on the overall goal list. He also moved past Jarome Iginla into 20th place for the most multi-goal games with 109.

New York Rangers winger Artemi Panarin had a goal and three assists in a 6-2 victory over the Boston Bruins. Mika Zibanejad scored two goals, and Adam Fox picked up three assists for the Rangers (13-11-2), who picked up their third straight win. Casey Mittelstadt and Morgan Geekie replied for the 14-12-0 Bruins.

The Montreal Canadiens got a 30-save performance from Sam Montembeault to defeat the Vegas Golden Knights 4-1. Cole Caufield, Juraj Slafkovsky, and Zach Bolduc each had a goal and an assist for the Canadiens (13-7-3), who picked up their third straight win. Mark Stone scored for the slumping Golden Knights (10-6-8), who are winless in their last four contests (0-2-2).

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Before this game, the Canadiens signed defenseman Mike Matheson to a five-year contract extension with an average annual value of $6 million. The 31-year-old Montreal native has been a reliable veteran presence on the Canadiens’ blueline. His cap hit is a bit pricey, but he likely would have received over $7 million annually on a longer term in next summer’s free-agent market. It’s a good move by the Habs, ensuring their top-four defensemen are all under long-term contracts.

Calgary Flames goalie Devin Cooley stopped 37 shots as his club overcame an early 2-0 deficit for a 5-3 upset of the Florida Panthers. Nazem Kadri had a goal and two assists for the 9-14-3 Flames, who’ve won four of their last five contests. Evan Rodrigues and Sam Bennett scored for the Panthers, who’ve dropped three of their last four and dropped to 12-11-1.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Earlier in the day, the Flames announced the signing of general manager Craig Conroy and fellow front-office executives Don Maloney, Dave Nonis, and Brad Pascall to two-year contract extensions. It’s a vote of confidence from Flames’ ownership despite the club’s low placement in the standings thus far.

New Jersey Devils netminder Jake Allen turned in a 42-save shutout to blank the Buffalo Sabres 5-0. Arseny Gritsyuk had two goals for the Devils (16-7-1) as they picked up their third straight victory. Alex Lyon allowed five goals on 18 shots for the Sabres, who slipped to 9-11-4.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: With the win, the Devils hold first place in the Eastern Conference with 33 points.

The Tampa Bay Lightning downed the Detroit Red Wings by a score of 6-3. Yanni Gourde tallied twice, and Nikita Kucherov collected two assists to extend his points streak to eight games for the 15-7-2 Lightning, who picked up their sixth straight win. J.T. SPECTOR’S NOTE: Islanders winger Kyle Palmieri left the game in the second period with a lower-body injury. While on his way to the bench, he stole the puck from Flyers defenseman Emil Andrae and passed to Anders Lee, who set up Emil Heineman for the Isles’ first goal.

A hat trick by Seth Jarvis powered the Carolina Hurricanes to a 5-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets. Andrei Svechnikov and Shayne Gostisbehere each had two assists for the 15-7-2 Hurricanes. Mark Scheifele replied for the slumping Jets (12-11-0) as they lost their fourth straight game.

The St. Louis Blues squeaked past the Ottawa Senators 4-3 on a goal by Matthew Kessel. Jordan Binnington stopped 25 shots for the 8-10-7 Blues. Brady Tkachuk collected an assist in his return to action with the 12-8-4 Senators.

San Jose Sharks goalie Yaroslav Askarov stopped 32 shots, and Macklin Celebrini picked up two assists to defeat the Vancouver Canucks 3-2. Adam Gaudette netted the winning goal for the 12-10-3 Sharks. Forwards Brock Boeser and Elias Pettersson replied for the Canucks (10-13-2), who have lost four of their last five games.

The Nashville Predators held off the Chicago Blackhawks 4-3. Ryan O’Reilly, Steven Stamkos, and Luke Evangelista each had a goal and an assist for the 8-12-4 Predators. Ryan Donato, Ryan Greene, and Teuvo Teravainen replied for the Blackhawks, who’ve lost four straight and dropped to 10-9-5.
