If it’s determined that he’ll miss the rest of the season (including the playoffs), he’ll be moved to season-ending LTIR, enabling them to exceed the salary cap by the remainder of his $9.8 million cap hit.

Meanwhile, Bichsel is expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks.

The Philadelphia Flyers got two goals and an assist from Owen Tippett in a 5-3 upset of the New Jersey Devils. Matvei Michkov netted two goals, and Dan Vladar stopped 29 shots for the 14-7-3 Flyers, who picked up their third straight win. NHL Morning Coffee Headlines – November 25, 2025

A career-best single-game performance by Mammoth center Logan Cooley, a lopsided victory by the Panthers over the Predators, the three stars of the week are revealed, and more in today’s NHL Morning Coffee Headlines

Karel Vejmelka made 33 saves, and Dylan Guenther had a goal and an assist for the Mammoth, who improved to 12-8-3. Ivan Barbashev replied for the 10-5-7 Golden Knights.

Greer scored twice and collected an assist, while Sam Reinhart and Carter Verhaeghe each had a goal and two assists for the Panthers (12-9-1). Filip Forsberg, Fedor Svechkov, and Nick Blankenburg replied for the Predators, who’ve lost three straight and dropped to 6-12-4.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: This loss came after Predators general manager Barry Trotz backed head coach Andrew Brunette while calling for his players to do more, especially on offense. However, the message fell on deaf ears.

Tampa Bay Lightning winger Brandon Hagel had two goals and an assist, and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 20 saves to shut out the Philadelphia Flyers 3-0. Nikita Kucherov collected three assists as the Lightning improved to 13-7-2, picking up their fourth straight win and moving into first place in the Atlantic Division with 28 points. Samuel Ersson stopped 15 of 17 shots for the Flyers, who dropped to 11-7-3 on the season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: What a difference a month makes. On Oct. 23, the Lightning were off to the worst start in franchise history, sitting in last place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 1-4-2. Some observers suggested that they were past their prime and incapable of fending off the hungry younger teams in the conference. They’ve since won 12 of their last 15 games.

Washington Capitals defenseman Jakob Chychrun tallied two goals as his club defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-1. Tom Wilson and John Carlson each had a goal and an assist for the Capitals (12-9-2), who’ve won four of their last five games. Denton Mateychuk scored for the 11-9-3 Blue Jackets as they dropped four of their last six contests.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski and winger Mathieu Olivier left this game with upper-body injuries. Winger Kirill Marchenko missed this game with an upper-body injury. Earlier in the day, the Jackets announced the signing of defenseman Brendan Smith to a one-year, two-way contract.

The Los Angeles Kings nipped the Ottawa Senators 2-1 on a third-period goal by Brandt Clarke. Warren Foegele also scored, and Darcy Kuemper made 27 saves for the 11-6-6 Kings, who ended a three-game winless skid (0-1-2). Fabian Zetterlund netted the only goal for the Senators (11-7-4).

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Senators defenseman Thomas Chabot missed this game as he returned to the injury list with an upper-body ailment. He’s listed as day-to-day and could return to the lineup when the Senators face the St. Louis Blues on Friday.

New Jersey Devils forwards Nico Hischier, Timo Meier, and Connor Brown each had a goal and an assist in a 4-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings, extending their home points streak to nine games. Jacob Markstrom turned aside 32 shots for the 14-7-1 Devils, who snapped a three-game losing skid. Moritz Seider picked up two points for the Red Wings (13-9-1).

Igor Shesterkin stopped 19 shots for the win while defensemen Adam Fox and Vladislav Gavrikov each had two assists for the Rangers, who improved to 11-11-2. Dylan Holloway and Brayden Schenn replied for the Blues, who dropped to 7-10-6.

NHL.COM: Calgary Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson, Columbus Blue Jackets blueliner Zach Werenski, and San Jose Sharks center Macklin Celebrini are the league’s three stars for the week ending Nov. 23, 2025.

NHL Morning Coffee Headlines – October 30, 2025

NHL Morning Coffee Headlines – October 30, 2025

Maple Leafs center John Tavares reaches a goal-scoring milestone, the Mammoth sign Logan Cooley to a lucrative extension, and more in today’s NHL Morning Coffee Headlines.

NHL.COM: Toronto Maple Leafs center John Tavares scored his 500th career NHL regular-season goal in a 6-3 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Charlie Coyle and Mathieu Olivier each had four, and Cole Sillinger scored twice and collected an assist for the 6-4-0 Blue Jackets, who’ve won three straight games. Sammy Blais and Nick Robertson each had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs, who dropped to 5-5-1.

Toronto Maple Leafs center John Tavares (NHL Images)

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Tavares is the 49th player in NHL history to reach the 500-goal milestone. Teammate Steven Lorentz left this game in the second period with an upper-body injury.

THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE: Logan Cooley signed an eight-year, $80 million contract extension with the Utah Mammoth. The 21-year-old center will earn an average annual value of $10 million starting in 2026-27.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Cooley has become one of the Mammoth’s invaluable core players in a short period of time. Chosen third overall in the 2022 NHL Draft, he’s had 44 points as a rookie in 2023-24 and 65 points in his sophomore campaign. He currently leads the Mammoth with eight goals and is second with 12 points in 11 games.

Cooley has played a significant role in the Mammoth’s strong start as they jockey with the Colorado Avalanche and Vegas Golden Knights for first place in the Western Conference. Locking him up for eight years ensures he’ll be with Utah throughout most of his playing prime.

A $10 million AAV is an expensive raise for a rising young star such as Cooley. However, it’ll be worthwhile over the long term if he continues to improve at the same pace as he has since 2023-24.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: Oilers winger Zach Hyman’s return to the lineup from offseason wrist surgery has been pushed back a week. The 33-year-old winger was supposed to come off the long-term injury reserve list on Nov. 1. He’s now considered week-to-week.

THE PROVINCE: Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes and teammate Conor Garland didn’t travel with the team to St. Louis on Wednesday. Hughes is day-to-day with a lower-body injury, and Garland is out with an undisclosed injury.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The early-season injuries are mounting for the Canucks. Filip Chytil, Jonathan Lekkerimaki, Nils Hoglander, Derek Forbort, Teddy Blueger, and Victor Mancini are also sidelined.

GLOBAL NEWS: Brad Marchand took a leave of absence from the Florida Panthers to return home to Halifax, Nova Scotia, as a guest coach in a tribute game honoring the life of his long-time friend and trainer’s daughter.

Selah Panacci-MacCallum, daughter of JP MacCallum, was 10 years old when she succumbed to cancer last Friday. MacCallum is the owner of the March & Mill Co. Hunters. Marchand was behind the bench with former Halifax Mooseheads’ teammate Andrew Bodnarchuk during Wednesday’s game against the Halifax McDonalds at the Halifax Forum.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Say what you will about Marchand’s on-ice antics against his opponents, but he’s a stand-up guy off the ice. My condolences to the MacCallum family.

THE HOCKEY NEWS: Carolina Hurricanes forward William Carrier (lower body) was placed on injured reserve.

DAILY FACEOFF: Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Samuel Ersson is listed as day-to-day with an undisclosed injury.

TSN: Calgary and Edmonton are among the cities bidding to host the 2028 World Cup of Hockey. Other bidders are believed to include Montreal, Vancouver, Las Vegas, Tampa Bay, and Dallas.

SPORTSNET: The NBA’s Dallas Mavericks have sued the Dallas Stars for breach of contract, alleging the NHL team is foiling attempts to improve American Airlines Center. The Stars have countersued, seeking to restore normal operations. The two teams have shared the arena since 2001.

NHL Rumor Mill – October 7, 2025

NHL Rumor Mill – October 7, 2025

Check out the latest on Flames center Nazem Kadri, Mammoth center Logan Cooley, Bruins goaltender Michael DiPietro, and Capitals goalie Clay Stevenson in today’s NHL Rumor Mill.

FLAMES NATION: TSN’s NHL insider Darren Dreger recently said it feels like a long shot that the Calgary Flames will trade center Nazem Kadri.

Calgary Flames center Nazem Kadri (NHL Images).

Dreger believes several teams around the league could benefit from Kadri’s presence. He pointed out that the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, and Montreal Canadiens are among the clubs that could use some help at center.

The Flames could consider it if they’re out of playoff contention by the March trade deadline, but not before then. Dreger said it would take “a tremendous overpay” to get him.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Kadri, 35, carries an average annual value (AAV) of $7 million through the 2028-29 season. He has a full no-movement clause for this season, but it becomes a 13-team no-trade list on July 1.

The Flames could listen to offers for Kadri if they’re out of the playoff chase by the trade deadline. However, it would be easier to wait until July 1 when he’ll have less control over where he can be traded.

THE SCORE: cited NHL insider Frank Seravalli reporting that sources said Logan Cooley rejected an eight-year contract extension offer worth an AAV of $9.6 million from the Utah Mammoth.

That offer would’ve made Cooley the Mammoth’s highest-paid player. He’s coming off a solid sophomore season with 65 points in 75 games.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Cooley is in the final season of his entry-level contract.

No reason was given for Cooley’s reported rejection of that offer. However, it’s likely because the salary cap is expected to rise substantially over the next two seasons, and he wants to get the best deal possible.

Cooley is likely betting on himself entering this season. If he builds on his sophomore performance, he could justify seeking between $10 million and $11 million annually.

THE HOCKEY NEWS/RUSSIAN MACHINE NEVER BREAKS: Boston Bruins goaltender Michael DiPietro and Washington Capitals netminder Clay Stevenson cleared waivers on Monday. They will report to their respective team’s AHL affiliates.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: DiPietro and Stevenson were rumored to be potential waiver targets. They could still draw interest in the trade market from teams seeking goaltending depth, especially since they’ve already cleared waivers. They could be worth monitoring over the next couple of weeks.

NHL Morning Coffee Headlines – August 19, 2025

NHL Morning Coffee Headlines – August 19, 2025

How the acquisition of JJ Peterka will affect the Mammoth’s offense, a new potential buyer emerges for the Penguins, former NHL coach Gerard Gallant heads to the KHL, and more in today’s NHL Morning Coffee Headlines.

THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE: Belle Fraser considers the Utah Mammoth’s acquisition of winger JJ Peterka from the Buffalo Sabres to be their best roster addition of this offseason. She pointed out that the Mammoth lost 13 overtime games last season because of an offense that ranked 21st overall.

Utah Mammoth winger JJ Peterka (NHL Images).

Peterka had 68 points last season, including 27 goals. At 23, his ceiling could be much higher, and if he gels with Clayton Keller, Logan Cooley, and Dylan Guenther, it could really change things for the Mammoth.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Mammoth made significant improvement during their first season in their new home, finishing with 89 points. They missed the playoffs by seven points, which is why management sought to improve their scoring punch with the addition of Peterka, who should fit in well with their promising young forwards like Cooley and Guenther.

Fraser also indicated that there is nothing new to report on a contract extension for Cooley. However, she isn’t concerned, given the steep rise in the salary cap this season, suggesting that players are likely pushing for more money.

Dallas Stars forward Wyatt Johnston could be a potential comparable for Cooley. In March, the 22-year-old center signed a five-year, $42 million contract extension with an average annual value of $8.4 million.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: With $6.6 million in cap space for this season, the Mammoth’s ownership has shown a willingness to spend near the ceiling. They have a projected $38.6 million available for 2026-27. That’s more than enough to re-sign a rising young star like Cooley and still have enough to re-sign or replace UFA-eligible forward Nick Schmaltz and RFA-eligible forward Barrett Hayton, and to add more talent to their roster.

PITTSBURGH HOCKEY NOW: cites Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reporting that another buyer has emerged for the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Hoffman Family of Companies, which owns the ECHL’s Florida Everblades, is the new suitor.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Former Penguins owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle are currently attempting to repurchase the franchise. However, recent reports suggest their offer is well below what Fenway Sports Group is presently seeking for the franchise.

THE HOCKEY NEWS: Former NHL coach Gerard Gallant was recently named the new bench boss of the KHL’s Shanghai Dragons. However, he’s frustrated about being snubbed for NHL coaching jobs.

“I’ve been out for two seasons and nothing has happened yet. Am I a little pissed off? Yes, but that’s the way it goes, you wait for your turn and your opportunities,” Gallant said.

Gallant indicated that his contract has an out clause after the first year. For now, he’s focused on heading to St. Petersburg and helping his new club reach the playoffs.

RG.ORG: Alexander Nikishin is looking forward to his first NHL regular season after debuting with the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2025 playoffs. He said that his main goal will be to contribute effectively without being the weak link on the roster.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Nikishin is the Hurricanes’ top prospect and has considerable upside as a top-four defenseman. He’s likely to fill the left-side second-pairing role this season.

TSN: The Columbus Blue Jackets signed former New York Islanders winger Hudson Fasching to a one-year, two-way contract.
