NHL.COM: The Dallas Stars clinched a playoff berth by defeating the Nashville Predators 5-1. Jason Robertson had a goal and three assists to become the first player to reach 100 points since the franchise moved to Dallas in 1993-94. With a record of 42-21-14, the Stars hold first place in the Central Division with 98 points. The Predators dropped to 38-30-8 and remain five points out of the final Western Conference wild-card berth.

The Minnesota Wild also secure a postseason spot despite dropping a 4-3 decision to the Vegas Golden Knights on a shootout goal by Reilly Smith. Wild winger Matt Boldy tallied his 30th goal of the season as his club also has 98 points with a record of 44-23-10 to sit second in the Central on the basis of regulation wins. Pavel Dorofeyev tallied twice for the Golden Knights (48-22-7) as they sit atop the Western Conference with 103 points.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Golden Knights center Chandler Stephenson missed this game due to illness. Meanwhile, the Wild announced winger Mason Shaw suffered a season-ending torn ACL in his right knee on Saturday.

Seattle Kraken goal-scoring leader Jared McCann tallied his 36th and 37th goals in an 8-1 drubbing of the Arizona Coyotes. With the win, the Kraken (42-26-8) opened a three-point lead over the Winnipeg Jets for the first Western Conference wild-card spot with 92 points. The 27-38-13 Coyotes have dropped eight straight games.

HEADLINES

NHL.COM: Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy, Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl and Boston Bruins winger David Pastrnak are the NHL’s three stars for the week ending April 2.

TSN: Montreal Canadiens center Sean Monahan (groin surgery) and forward Alex Belzile (fractured leg) are done for the season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Canadiens have lost an NHL-leading 670 man-games to injury. It’s the second straight season they suffered that dubious honor having led the league with 731 in 2021-22.

Some of those injuries were due to bad luck and some were unavoidable over the course of gameplay. Nevertheless, there is genuine concern among Montreal fans and pundits over those unusually high numbers. The Canadiens will reportedly conduct an internal review into its medical treatment, rehab and training procedures during the offseason.

CAP FRIENDLY: reports the Columbus Blue Jackets will receive the Los Angeles Kings’ first-round pick in 2023 after the latter clinched a playoff berth on Sunday. That was part of the conditions of the March 1 trade that saw the Jackets ship goaltender Joonas Korpisalo and defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov to the Kings.

OTTAWA SUN: NHL analyst Nick Kypreos was spotted with Toronto-based billionaire Steve Apostolopoulos and his representatives during Saturday’s game between the Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs at Canadian Tire Centre. That group is among several bidding to purchase the Senators. It’s not known what role Kypreos has with the group.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: General manager Nick Kypreos? Kidding! Or am I? (insert winky face here).

STLTODAY.COM: The Blues are the latest team to opt out of wearing Pride jerseys during their warmups on Pride Night. However, the players will use rainbow tape on their sticks and Pride-themed pucks. The club announced the decision was made to focus on positive actions being taken to support and affirmation to the LGBTQIA-plus community.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The report observed that the club wore Pride jerseys and tape during warmups last season, with auctioned Pride jerseys, sticks, hats and bags raising nearly $25,000.00 for charity. I wonder what’s changed since then? Hmmm…

THE HOCKEY NEWS: Carson Briere, son of former NHL star and Philadelphia Flyers interim general manager Daniel Briere, has been removed from Merseyhurst Men’s Hockey Team. He faces charges for damaging the wheelchair of a disabled fellow student at a pub in Erie, Pa last month.

NHL.COM: The Florida Panthers overcame a 2-1 deficit to defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 on an overtime goal by Brandon Montour. Alex Lyon got the win with a 38-save performance while Sam Reinhart had a goal and an assist for the 37-31-7 Panthers (81 points), who moved one point behind the Pittsburgh Penguins for the final Eastern Conference wild-card berth. Auston Matthews tallied his 37th goal of the season for the 44-20-10 Leafs as they sit second in the Atlantic Division with 98 points.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Panthers rallied thanks to head coach Paul Maurice’s mid-game profanity-laced tirade toward his players on the bench. Lyon got the call in goal as Sergei Bobrovsky was sidelined by illness.

Minnesota Wild forward Frederick Gaudreau scored two shorthanded goals to double up the Colorado Avalanche 4-2. Filip Gustavsson kicked out 42 shots for the Wild (44-22-9) as they hold a three-point lead over the Dallas Stars for first place in the Central Division with 97 points. Bowen Byram and Lars Eller replied for the 44-26-6 Avalanche, who remain in third place in the Central with 94 points.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Wild winger Ryan Reaves was unavailable for this game with an upper-body injury. Meanwhile, Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar wasn’t pleased with his club’s performance in this game, claiming there were “some passengers” among his players. In other words, he believes some of them didn’t play up to their expected level of performance.

New York Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin picked up his eighth win in 10 starts through March in a 2-1 shootout victory over the Washington Capitals. Bo Horvat and Kyle Palmieri tallied in the shootout as the Islanders improved to 39-28-9 (87 points) to open a five-point lead over Pittsburgh for the first Eastern wild-card spot. The Capitals (34-32-9) are five points behind the Penguins.

HEADLINES

BOSTON HOCKEY NOW: Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery dismissed a TSN report claiming Taylor Hall was close to returning to the lineup. “The only thing I can say is that I know he is not cleared. That’s what I know so that report to me is false,” said Montgomery.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The report cited sources claiming Hall felt he was ready to return but the Bruins lack the salary-cap space to activate him, speculating they could attempt to stretch it out until the playoffs start when the cap no longer applies.

VEGAS HOCKEY NOW: Golden Knights defenseman Shea Theodore is listed as day-to-day with an undisclosed injury.

NEW YORK POST: The Rangers yesterday signed Filip Chytil to a four-year, $17.75 million contract beginning in 2023-24. The average annual value is $4.4375 million.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: A reasonable deal for Chytil, who centers the Rangers’ third line between Alexis Lafreniere and Kaapo Kakko. The 23-year-old was slated to become a restricted free agent with arbitration rights who is earning $2.3 million on his current deal. He’s enjoying a career-best performance with 22 goals and 42 points in 66 games.

Cap Friendly indicates this signing leaves the Rangers with a projected $12.3 million in cap space for 2023-24 with 14 roster players under contract. Lafreniere and K’Andre Miller are also eligible for RFA status this summer.

THE SCORE: Ottawa Senators defenseman Thomas Chabot is likely sidelined for a couple of weeks with an upper-body injury.

DETROIT HOCKEY NOW: Red Wings goaltender Ville Husso won’t be out of the rest of the season with a lower-body injury after all. He’s not expected to return this week but could get in some games before the season’s end. Winger Robby Fabbri, however, is confirmed to be out for the season following surgery to address a lower-body injury that will take four to six weeks of recovery.

CTV NEWS OTTAWA: NHL commissioner Gary Bettman recently said the league will evaluate its Pride Nights after a handful of players refused to wear Pride-themed jerseys during pregame warmups.

ESPN’s Kevin Weekes reports Buffalo Sabres prospect goaltender Devon Levi will make his NHL debut on Friday against the Rangers.

THE MERCURY NEWS: The San Jose Sharks signed forward Nikolai Knyzhov to a two-year contract with an average annual value of $1.25 million.

NHL.COM: The Edmonton Oilers nipped the Arizona Coyotes 5-4 as Ryan Nugent-Hopkins snapped a 4-4 tie in the third period. Nugent-Hopkins, Leon Draisaitl and Evan Bouchard each had a goal and an assist for the 42-23-9 Oilers as they hold third place in the Pacific Division with 93 points. Barrett Hayton and Mattias Macelli each scored two goals while Lawson Crouse collected three assists for the 27-36-13 Coyotes.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Draisaitl became the fourth-fastest active player to reach 300 career goals. Teammate Connor McDavid collected his career-best 80th assist of the season and is the first player to reach 140 points in a season since Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr in 1995-96.

Minnesota Wild winger Matt Boldy collected his second hat trick of the month and his first natural one of his career in a 5-1 victory over the Seattle Kraken. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 35 shots as the Wild (43-22-9) hold a one-point lead over the Colorado Avalanche for first place in the Central Division with 95 points. Jaden Schwartz tallied for the Kraken as they hold the first Western Conference wild-card spot with 88 points.

The Colorado Avalanche remained one point back of the Wild by defeating the Anaheim Ducks 5-1. Nathan MacKinnon and Bowen Byram each had a goal and an assist for the 44-23-6 Avalanche. Doug Grant replied for the 23-41-10 Ducks.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Ducks center Trevor Zegras left this game with a lower-body injury in the second period. The Ducks were already playing without Troy Terry as he was out of this contest for personal reasons.

New York Islanders winger Kyle Palmieri tallied twice and collected an assist in a 5-1 win over the New Jersey Devils. Ilya Sorokin stopped 30 shots as the Islanders improved to 38-28-9 and hold a three-point lead over the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first Eastern Conference wild-card berth with 85 points. Erik Haula replied for the Devils (46-20-8) as they remain three points back of the first-place Carolina Hurricanes in the Metropolitan Division with 100 points.

The Ottawa Senators kept their playoff hopes alive while dealing a blow to the Florida Panthers with a 5-2 victory. Brady Tkachuk had a goal and an assist while Mads Sogaard turned aside 32 shots as the Senators (36-33-5) sit five points behind Pittsburgh with 77 points. Gustav Forsling scored both goals for the 36-31-7 Panthers as they remain three points behind the Penguins.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Panthers forward Sam Bennett missed his fourth straight game with an undisclosed injury.

A shootout goal by Michael Pezzetta lifted the Montreal Canadiens to a 4-3 upset of the Buffalo Sabres. Brendan Gallagher’s game-tying goal was also the 200th goal of his career for the 30-38-6 Canadiens. Rookie Lukas Rousek scored his first goal and collected his first assist in his first NHL game for the 35-31-7 Sabres, who set five points behind the Penguins for that final Eastern wild-card spot.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Pezzetta delighted Canadiens fans by riding his stick “Tiger Williams style” to celebrate his game-winner. The Sabres played without Tage Thompson as he’s listed as day-to-day with an upper-body injury. Ilya Lybushkin was the only Sabre who declined to take part in the club’s Pride Night warmups.

HEADLINES

NHL.COM: The New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs didn’t play on Monday night but both clubs clinched playoff berths. The Rangers secured their spot due to Monday’s losses by the Panthers and Sabres while the Leafs are in due to the Panthers’ loss.

Los Angeles Kings winger Viktor Arvidsson, Montreal Canadiens center Nick Suzuki, and Minnesota Wild goaltender Filip Gustavsson are the NHL’s three stars for the week ending March 26.

VEGAS HOCKEY NOW: The Golden Knights set an NHL record following their win against the Edmonton Oilers by becoming the first team to win four straight games with four different goaltenders. Jiri Patera, Jonathan Quick, Logan Thompson and Laurent Brossoit gained those respective wins.

DETROIT FREE PRESS: Red Wings goaltender Ville Husso and forward Robby Fabbri are sidelined by injuries for the rest of the season.

TSN: Columbus Blue Jackets defensemen Nick Blankenburg and Erik Gudbranson and forward Mathieu Olivier are also done for the season due to injuries.

PHILLY HOCKEY NOW: The front office changes continue for the Flyers as Dave Scott is stepping down as chairman of the club’s parent company (Comcast Spectacor) and governor of the franchise. Dan Hilferty will take over as Scott’s successor.

OTTAWA SUN: NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said he’ll leave it up to the Senators’ new owner where, and if, they’ll build a new arena for the franchise. He stressed that the club won’t be leaving Ottawa. “If this team is going to move, the only move that will be permitted is to downtown,” he said. Bettman doesn’t want to back the new owner into a corner regarding a new arena.

The Senators signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Capital Commission to build a new arena at LeBreton Flats which is as close to the downtown core. However, Ottawa mayor Mark Sutcliffe last week said it wasn’t the only possible site for an arena.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Bettman also said there are six ownership groups bidding for the Senators. The new owner could be announced by late April at the earliest.

SPORTSNET: Hockey Hall of Famer Igor Larionov suggests Russia should withdraw from the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) in order to negotiate directly with the NHL for the release of its players to represent their country in international tournaments. The IIHF has suspended Russia over its ongoing war with Ukraine.

TSN: Speaking of international competition, Hockey Canada has deemed all players from Canada’s 2018 World Junior Team will be ineligible to participate in the 2023 World Hockey Championship until an investigation into an alleged group sexual assault is completed.

The Devils clinch their first playoff berth in five years, the Bruins clinch the Atlantic Division, and much more in today’s NHL Morning Coffee Headlines.

NHL.COM: The New Jersey Devils clinched their first playoff berth since 2018 by beating the Ottawa Senators 5-3. Jack Hughes scored his 40th goal of the season while Nico Hischier collected two assists for the Devils (46-19-8) as they sit second in the Metropolitan Division with 100 points, becoming the third team this season to reach that plateau. Tim Stutzle had two assists for the 35-33-5 Senators (75 points) as they sit seven points out of the final Eastern Conference wild-card berth.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Before the game, Senators head coach D.J. Smith told reporters that defenseman Jakob Chychrun will be sidelined for “a couple of weeks” with a lower-body injury. He also said center Ridly Greig is out of the season with an injured sternum.

Boston Bruins winger Garnet Hathaway tallied the winning goal as his club clinched first place in the Atlantic Division with a 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. Patrice Bergeron scored his 27th goal of the season for the 56-11-5 Bruins as they sit atop the overall standings with 117 points. Victor Hedman replied for the 42-26-6 Lightning, who’ve dropped four straight games and sit third in the Atlantic Division with 90 points.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: This game also marked the 10th anniversary of Jon Cooper’s hiring as the Lightning’s head coach.

The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-3 on two late goals by Sebastian Aho and Teuvo Teravainen. Pyotr Kochetkov made 41 saves for the Hurricanes (47-16-8) as they sit two points ahead of the Devils in first place in the Metropolitan Division with 102 points. Auston Matthews scored twice for the 43-20-9 Maple Leafs as they remain five points up on the Lightning for second place in the Atlantic Division.

An overtime goal by Nicolas Roy lifted the Vegas Golden Knights over the Edmonton Oilers 4-3. Jack Eichel had a goal and two assists for the Golden Knights (46-21-6) as they sit in first place in the Western Conference with 98 points. Leon Draisaitl scored his 45th goal of the season for the 41-23-9 Oilers (91 points) as they sit three points behind the Los Angeles Kings in third place in the Pacific Division.

Speaking of the Kings, they tied a franchise record with an 11-game points streak with a 4-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets. Viktor Arvidsson scored twice while Joonas Korpisalo stopped 25 shots for the 42-20-10 Kings. Pierre-Luc Dubois netted his 25th goal of the season as the Jets (41-30-3) hold the final Western Conference wild-card spot.

The Seattle Kraken thumped the Nashville Predators 7-2. Eeli Tolvanen scored twice against his former club and Jared McCann had a goal and two assists for the Kraken (40-24-8) as they hold the first Western wild-card berth with 88 points. Matt Duchene and Tyson Barrie each had a goal and an assist for the 36-27-8 Predators (80 points) as they sit five points behind the Jets.

Third-period goals by Ryan Hartman and Frederick Gaudreau gave the Minnesota Wild a 3-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. Filip Gustavsson stopped 22 shots as the Wild (42-22-9) vaulted over the Dallas Stars into first place in the Central Division with 93 points. Lukas Reichel replied for the 24-42-6 Blackhawks.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Blackhawks forward Philipp Kurashev missed this game with an upper-body injury. He is expected to undergo evaluation for a concussion.

The Stars, meanwhile, dropped a 3-1 decision to the Vancouver Canucks. Elias Pettersson collected an assist to extend his points streak to 11 games while Thatcher Demko kicked out 25 shots for the 33-34-5 Canucks as they’ve won eight of their last 10 games. Ryan Suter replied for the Stars (39-20-14) as they sit one point back of the Wild in second place in the Central.

An overtime goal by Evgeni Malkin gave the Pittsburgh Penguins a 4-3 win over the Washington Capitals after the latter overcame a 3-0 deficit. Casey DeSmith made 31 saves for the 36-27-10 Penguins as they hold the final Eastern Conference wild-card spot with 82 points. Alex Ovechkin netted his 45th goal for the Capitals (34-32-8) as they sit six points back of the Penguins.

The New York Rangers overcame a 2-0 deficit to nip the Florida Panthers 4-3. Patrick Kane scored his 20th of the season while Alexis Lafreniere, Kaapo Kakko and Filip Chytil each had a goal and an assist for the 43-20-10 Rangers (96 points) as they sit four points behind the second-place Devils in the Metropolitan Division. Aleksander Barkov tallied his 20th of the season as the 36-30-7 Panthers sit three points behind the Penguins with 79 points.

Buffalo Sabres goaltender Eric Comrie stopped 26 shots to shut out the New York Islanders 2-0. Kyle Okposo and Jeff Skinner netted third-period goals as the Sabres (35-31-6) sit six points behind the Penguins. Semyon Varlamov made 33 saves as the 37-28-6 Islanders hold the first Eastern wild-card berth with 83 points.

The Calgary Flames gained ground on the Jets with a 5-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks. Tyler Toffoli scored twice to tie a career-high with his 31st goal of the season while Mikael Backlund skated in his 900th career NHL game as the Flames improved to 33-26-15 (81 points) to sit four points behind the Jets. Erik Karlsson collected two assists to reach 90 points on the season for the 19-39-15 Sharks.

Montreal Canadiens forward Rafael Harvey-Pinard tallied his first career NHL hat trick in a 8-2 drubbing of the Columbus Blue Jackets. Nick Suzuki had a goal and three assists while Mike Matheson and Mike Hoffman each collected three points for the 29-38-6 Canadiens. Kirill Marchenko and Lane Pederson replied for the 23-42-7 Blue Jackets.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Blue Jackets goaltender Elvis Merzlikins left this game with an apparent leg injury in the second period. Canadiens defenseman Jordan Harris returned to action after missing eight games with a lower-body injury.

Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Carter Hart stopped 29 shots to blank the Detroit Red Wings 3-0. Kieffer Bellows, Scott Laughton and Tyson Foerster scored for the 28-32-12 Flyers while the Red Wings dropped to 31-32-9 on the season.

St. Louis Blues forwards Brayden Schenn and Kasperi Kapanen each scored twice and collected an assist in a 6-3 win over the Anaheim Ducks. Colton Parayko had three assists for the 33-33-6 Blues. Rookie Nikita Nesterenko scored his first NHL goal while Troy Terry had a goal and an assist for the 23-40-10 Ducks.

Which teams would be good destinations for Ducks goalie John Gibson? Will the Canadiens delve into this summer’s free-agent market for a scorer? Should the Wild re-sign trade deadline pick-up Marcus Johansson? Find out in today’s NHL Rumor Mill.

LATEST GIBSON SPECULATION

NHL.COM: In his latest mailbag segment, Dan Rosen was asked if this is the summer when the Anaheim Ducks trade John Gibson and where the 29-year-old goaltender might end up.

Rosen thinks the Ducks are weighing the value of keeping Gibson to help them stabilize their rebuild or trading him for a return that accelerates the process. He pointed out that his $6.4 million annual average value for the next four seasons isn’t an issue for the Ducks as they’re flush with cap space.

If the Ducks decide to shop Gibson this summer, Rosen believes he has value in the trade market. The Pittsburgh Penguins could use him as a replacement for pending free agent Tristan Jarry while the Buffalo Sabres need an upgrade between the pipes.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Cap Friendly indicates the Penguins have $19.4 million in projected cap space with 15 roster players under contract for 2023-24. They have sufficient cap room to take on Gibson, who could be open for a return to his hometown. The Pens could ask the Ducks to retain some salary or take back a salaried player as part of the deal.

The Sabres can easily afford Gibson’s cap hit with over $19 million in projected space and 20 players under contract, including their core talent. The Ducks could ask them to include a promising young roster player or one of their top prospects as part of the return.

WILL THE CANADIENS PURSUE A SCORER THIS SUMMER?

MONTREAL HOCKEY NOW: In a recent mailbag segment, Marc Dumont was asked if he sees the Canadiens dipping into this summer’s UFA pool. He doubts they’ll make a big splash but thinks they’ll try to add a scorer as they did with Denis Gurianov.

Dumont suggests a winger such as Ottawa’s Alex DeBrincat or Carolina’s Max Pacioretty would fit the bill, though the former would be more expensive than the latter. He knows things ended poorly for Pacioretty in Montreal but that was with different teammates. Dumont believes he’d be worth bringing back on a reasonable contract if he’s healthy.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Don’t expect the Canadiens to pursue any expensive veteran talent via free agency this summer. The Montreal Gazette’s Stu Cowan cited general manager Kent Hughes telling TSN’s Pierre LeBrun and Ryan Rishaug that they’re not going to sign a 28 or 29-year-old to speed up their rebuild. His preference is to trade for good, young players like last summer’s acquisition of Kirby Dach.

If Pacioretty makes a full recovery from his torn Achilles I don’t see him returning to Montreal even if Hughes was open to signing a veteran UFA scorer. The 34-year-old winger will likely want to join a contender.

SHOULD THE WILD RE-SIGN JOHANSSON?

THE ATHLETIC: Michael Russo observed the Minnesota Wild’s recent acquisition of Marcus Johansson has improved Matt Boldy’s performance. In their recent five games since Kirill Kaprizov was sidelined by an injury, Boldy has five goals and nine points while Johansson has two goals and seven points. The Wild were 3-1-1 during that stretch.

Russo believes the Wild should look at re-signing the 32-year-old Johansson if he and Boldy maintain that solid offensive chemistry together. The winger said he enjoys playing in Minnesota and hopes he can make a home there.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Wild have $11.4 million in projected cap space for 2023-24 with 14 players under contract and restricted free agents Filip Gustavsson and Calen Addison to re-sign. Johanson is on a one-year, $1.1 million contract. Perhaps a one-year deal with a slump bump to $1.5 million will interest him.

NHL Morning Coffee Headlines – March 22, 2023

Alex Ovechkin passed Wayne Gretzky to claim a scoring record, the Hurricanes and Stars remain on top of their respective divisions, Jonathan Quick reaches a goaltending milestone and more in today’s NHL Morning Coffee Headlines.

NHL.COM: Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin surpassed Wayne Gretzky for the most 40-goal seasons in a 7-6 overtime loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Ovechkin has now reached the 40-goal plateau a record 13 times in his NHL career but his Capitals dropped to 33-31-8 (74 points) and sit five points behind the Florida Panthers for the final Eastern Conference wild-card berth. Jack Roslovic scored twice, including the game-winner, for the 22-41-7 Blue Jackets.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: With 10 games left in the Capitals’ schedule, Ovechkin has a shot at reaching 50 goals for a record 10th season.

A three-goal third period lifted the Carolina Hurricanes over the New York Rangers 3-2 with Teuvo Teravainen tallying the winning goal late in the third period. The Hurricanes (46-15-8)  became the second team this season to reach 100 points and sit two ahead of the New Jersey Devils for first place in the Metropolitan Division. The 41-20-10 Rangers got a 36-save performance by Igor Shesterkin but remain in third place in the Metro with 92 points.

The Dallas Stars dropped a 5-4 decision to the Seattle Kraken as Adam Larsson scored the game-winner in overtime. Brandon Tanev tallied twice and collected an assist for the Kraken (39-24-7) as they hold the first Western Conference wild-card spot with 85 points. Stars captain Jamie Benn had a goal and two assists as his club rose to 38-19-14 to maintain their hold on first place in the Central Division with 90 points.

An overtime goal by Matt Boldy carried the Minnesota Wild over the New Jersey Devils 2-1. Filip Gustavsson kicked out a career-high 47 shots as the Wild (41-22-8) sit second in the Central with 90 points on the basis of regulation wins. Timo Meier netted his 35th goal of the season for the 45-18-8 Devils (98 points), who sit two points back of the first-place Hurricanes in the Metropolitan Division.

The league-leading Boston Bruins nipped the Ottawa Senators 2-1 with Linus Ullmark stopping 40 shots for the win. David Krejci and Jake DeBrusk scored for the 54-11-5 Bruins (113 points) while Dylan Gambrell scored for the 34-32-5 Senators (73 points) as they sit six points out of the final Eastern wild-card spot.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Before this game, the Bruins announced defenseman Derek Forbort will be sidelined by a lower-body injury for the remainder of the regular season.

Speaking of the final Eastern wild-card spot, the Florida Panthers (36-28-7) failed to widen the gap between them and the teams chasing them after dropping a 6-3 decision to the Philadelphia Flyers. Travis Sanheim tallied two goals and Carter Hart made 41 saves for the 26-32-12 Flyers. Aleksander Barkov, Sam Reinhart and Brandon Montour each had two points for the Panthers (79 points), who remain one up on the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The New York Islanders improved to 37-27-8 by thumping the Toronto Maple Leafs 7-2 to widen their lead over the Panthers for the first Eastern wild-card berth with 82 points. Cal Clutterbuck scored twice and chipped in an assist for the Islanders. Mitch Marner tallied his 27th goal of the season for the Leafs (42-19-9) as they sit in second place in the Atlantic Division with 93 points.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Islanders center Brock Nelson left the game in the first period following a hit by Leafs forward Noel Acciari. There was no immediate update on his condition.

Vegas Golden Knights goaltender Jonathan Quick (31 saves) took over second place for most wins among American-born goaltenders (375) by backstopping his club over the Vancouver Canucks 4-3. The Golden Knights (44-21-6) hold first place in the Pacific Division with 94 points. J.T. Miller scored twice and added an assist while Quinn Hughes set a franchise single-season assist record for defensemen (61) as they fell to 31-34-5 on the season.

Winnipeg Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck turned aside 29 shots in a 2-1 win over the Arizona Coyotes. Nikolaj Ehlers and Adam Lowry scored for the Jets (40-29-3) as they hold the final Western Conference wild-card berth with 83 points. Barrett Hayton tallied for the 27-33-11 Coyotes.

The Calgary Flames kept pace with the Jets by dropping the Anaheim Ducks 5-1. Tyler Toffoli had three assists for the 32-25-11 Flames (79 points) as they remain four back of the Jets. Frank Vatrano scored for the 23-38-10 Ducks. Flames defenseman Chris Tanev missed this game with an upper-body injury. 

Montreal Canadiens netminder Sam Montembeault stopped 31 shots as his club upset the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2. Nick Suzuki had two assists and Kirby Dach scored in his return to action for the 28-37-6 Canadiens after missing 16 games with a lower-body injury. Brayden Point netted his 44th goal of the season for the Lightning (42-24-6) as they remain three points back of the Leafs in the Atlantic Division with 90 points.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The good news for the depleted Canadiens is Dach and Brendan Gallagher returning to the lineup following lengthy injuries. The bad news is winger Josh Anderson left the game with an ankle injury and is expected to miss their next game while defenseman Kaiden Guhle is done for the season with a high-ankle sprain suffered last week against the Panthers.

The Nashville Predators snapped a three-game skid with a 7-3 drubbing of the Buffalo Sabres. Luke Evangelista scored twice and added two assists while Matt Duchene scored twice for the Predators (35-26-8) as they are five points behind the Jets with 78 points. Tage Thompson scored his 43rd of the season while Jeff Skinner netted his 30th for the 33-31-6 Sabres (72 points) as they remain seven points out of the final Eastern wild-card spot.

A shootout goal by Lucas Raymond gave the Detroit Red Wings a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Blues. Filip Zadina and Alex Chiasson scored for the 31-30-9 Wings, who sit eight points out of the final Eastern wild-card berth. Marco Scandella and Robert Bortuzzo replied for the 31-33-6 Blues.

IN OTHER NEWS…

COLORADO HOCKEY NOW: The Avalanche signed head coach Jared Bednar to a three-year contract extension. He’s led the Avs to five straight playoff appearances, two consecutive division titles and the 2022 Stanley Cup.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: This is a well-deserved extension for Bednar, who took over this club during the lowest period in its history after Patrick Roy quit as head coach before the 2016-17 season. Their rise among the league’s elite over the past five seasons is in part due to his coaching.

TSN: The NHL announced Fanatics will take over as its’ on-ice jersey provider beginning in 2024-25, taking over from Adidas.
