The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired forwards Nick Foligno from the Columbus Blue Jackets and Stefan Noesen from the San Jose Sharks.

The Blue Jackets receive the Leafs’ first-round pick in 2021 and a fourth-round pick in 2022. The Sharks, meanwhile, receive the Leafs’ 2021 fourth-round pick.

The Jackets also retain 50 percent of Foligno’s $5.5 million cap hit ($2.25 million). The Sharks retain half, meaning the Leafs are only charged $1.375 million.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Another skillful bit of salary-cap management by Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas. A well-respected and versatile forward, Foligno’s two-way skills and work ethic should make him a solid addition to the Leafs. Noesen will join the Leafs’ taxi squad or be sent to their farm team. The Jackets now have three first-round picks in this year’s draft having also acquired the Tampa Bay Lightning’s yesterday in the David Savard trade.

The Montreal Canadiens acquired defenseman Jon Merrill from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for a fifth-round pick in 2021 and minor-leaguer Hayden Verbeek.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin delves into his deep bag of 2021 draft picks to add a veteran depth left-side defenseman in Merrill. The 29-year-old blueliner can play left or right-side defense and has some shutdown skills. He’ll likely feel the third defense pairing role.

Washington Capitals trade defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a conditional third-round pick in 2021.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: A salary dump by the Capitals, freeing up $800K in cap space. Siegenthaler is a restricted free agent this summer with arbitration rights.

  1. Hoping this will make Willie a braver player if it does then it`s like getting 2 players makes the price for a rental easier to stomach. Still need a dman and a goalie

    • Who is Willie?

      • Nylander

  2. Totally agree
We need a detenseman and goalie …
    A goalie Please
Olekiak out of Dallas , I am hearing for 1

Bruin fans – Sweeney , I heard is still in bed !

  3. Hey! Gonna post this on a few segments cause I’m legit curious. If a team takes a major penalty… then the team on the penalty kill takes a minor… if the team with the major scores 4 on 4 do they get credit like it was a pp goal cause the was supposed to be short handed? Then does it revert to a 5 on 4? Or cause they had the same amount of skaters does the two minutes keep going?

    • Chris, wouldn’t it be a 5-on-3? That’s how it reads.
Maybe you meant the team on the 5 minute power play takes a minor…

      • Damn it yes.

  4. Great move lots of grit can also score i could see playing on the John Tavares line they will more than likely try him on all top 3 lines just my guess anyhow..cheers

    • Who’s Tavares haven’t seen much of him this year and expect over the next few even less what a horrible contract.

  5. How about Dermott and Kerfoot? Please trade them for bag of pucks.

  6. Leafs are getting smart. Signing ex Senators is a smart move.

  7. Report : Penguins acquire Jeff Carter.

  8. Hall and Lazar to Boston for Bjork and a 2nd. Bruins fans, let loose!!

    • Not bad finally getting the guy that every fan was hoping for to be drafted by the bruins in 2010-2011. His agent was Bobby Orr. Hopefully he can bounce back and the price was right for sure

  9. Sweeney best GM in the business handles the cap like a true manager now they need to get healthy best top 9 in league Bergeron Marchand Smith Krech Pasta Hall Coyle Ritchie DeBrusk wow.

    • I don’t know about best GM in the business lol, but in my view I think Boston gave up very little for Hall, despite his UFA status and his poor season. What will Bjork end up being for Buffalo, a top six player? And what will the 2nd round pick amount to?

I think Boston get the better of it.

Quick fantasy idea, let’s here the votes: does Vegas, needing depth at center, entertain giving up their 1st round pick (essentially a 2nd) for Sam Bennett, the playoff beast?

      • Dang spelling lol.

    • Ohh Obe you poor misguided soul may the farce be with you

  10. I’m hoping this revitalizes Hall’s career as well as Krejic’s career. got up at 6 this morning saw the news the sleeper in this deal is Curtis Lazar he’s been an underachiever. So long Kuhlman Bidh etc Mike Reilly okay was hoping for a bigger name on the back end but in all honesty Mike’s having a good year and he’s a lot better than what we have now on d exception Carlo and Charlie Mac

  11. What is the most that a team can take off a players cap hit? I was under impression 50 percent was the max. Doesn’t seem very fair that they can take 75 percent off a players cap hit even if they use a second team.

    • Hugh, I believe Jackets retain 50% for the 1st and San Jose 25% for the 4th rounder. I believe that is how this deal was able to get done. Maybe someone else or Lyle, can you confirm?

    • It’s allowed under the CBA so by definition is fair.
