Check out the latest on Matthew Tkachuk, Sean Monahan, Seth Jones, Martin Jones and more in the Sunday NHL rumor roundup.

NOTE: The NHL expansion draft roster freeze went into effect at 3 pm EST on Saturday. It expires on Thursday, July 22 at 1 pm EST.

OTTAWA SUN: Bruce Garrioch reports the Calgary Flames are “open for business”. Everyone is keeping an eye on Matthew Tkachuk, who faces an uncertain future in Calgary. The St. Louis Blues are believed among several teams interested in the 23-year-old winger.

There’s also talk Flames general manager Brad Treliving is trying to gauge the trade market for center Sean Monahan. The Carolina Hurricanes and Ottawa Senators are among teams seeking help at center.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Garrioch said the Flames are seeking players who compete and work hard to fit coach Darryl Sutter’s system. Tkachuk would seem to be a good fit in that system but he was said to be unhappy about his reduced playing time after Sutter took over.

A St. Louis native, Tkachuk’s been tied to the Blues in recent rumors. Treliving firmly denied the winger was unhappy in Calgary and wanted out. Still, the Flames GM could be willing to entertain offers from around the league.

The rebuilding Senators could benefit from acquiring someone like Monahan but I’m not sure he’s a fit with the Hurricanes. They’re already deep at center with Sebastian Aho, Vincent Trocheck and Jordan Staal.

The Chicago Blackhawks are trying to acquire Seth Jones from the Columbus Blue Jackets. To clear roster space, they’re attempting to move blueliner Nikita Zadorov.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Athletic’s Scott Powers reports there’s a chance the Blackhawks won’t acquire Jones. A source also said they didn’t acquire Caleb Jones from Edmonton as bait to entice his older brother.

The Blackhawks also won’t be looking at signing Ryan Suter, who was bought out last week by the Minnesota Wild. Zadorov could be taken off their hands if left exposed in the expansion draft.

The San Jose Sharks addition of Adin Hill leaves staring goalie Martin Jones’ future uncertain.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Athletic’s Kevin Kurz recently speculated the Sharks could buy out Jones. It’ll save them $3.8 million next season, $3.33 million the following season and $2.8 million in 2023-24. The final three seasons will count as $1.66 million annually against their cap. A trade would get his contract entirely off their books but Kurz considers that unlikely.

Tampa Bay Lightning GM Julien BriseBois is trying to package draft picks with bad contracts in the hope a team with cap space (Arizona, Buffalo) might take them off his hands. He’s also hoping the Seattle Kraken take Tyler Johnson and his $5 million annual cap hit in the expansion draft.

Sources told Garrioch Winnipeg Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff was trying to move winger Mason Appleton before the trade freeze. Those talks could continue if he’s not selected by the Kraken.

  1. Read that Vancouver tried getting Appleton but I guess the price was to high

Trev should not trade Tkachuk, Monahan yes but maybe he should wait and hope that he regains his form after the surgery and then move him

    • I suppose it will all boil down to the offers received for Monahan – if they’re all deemed to be the low-ball type, then he may just as well do as you suggest. But if he gets an offer with lots of promise then, on the supposition that he may never regain his form, strike while the iron is hot.

Re Tkachuk – sweeping away all the denials, usually where there’s smoke there’s fire.

      • George, from an Ottawa stand point what do you think they would offer for Monahan?

As far as Tkachuk I am sure if the right deal was offered he would be gone as well.

      • George O

As a Sens fan do you see Monahan as a fit in Ottawa?

I like their current crop of centres, especially Norris.

      • wow FlameFan and Daryl – that’s a scenario I’ve been thinking about for some time.

I could see Dorion offering up a package that included C/RW Colin White, protected C prospect Logan Brown and D prospect Lassi Thompson.

      • You tell em Bruce…I will. Tkachuk not bloody likely!

      • If they had acquired him, who would have been exposed? That factor into trade value.

  2. Calgary needs a new decision maker and a new progressive head coach instead of the Neanderthal that was brought out of mothballs …

I am a little surprised that Jim Rutherford hasn’t been hired by some front office, especially by an owner who wants to win right now … he’ll strip your club of future assets but get you into the mix quickly …

    • ” The Neanderthal that was brought out of mothballs.” Made my day, so funny. Thanks.✌😁

    • Ed, yes I agree the Flames need a new decision maker. Treliving is not a bad GM but he has taken them as far as his abilities allow. I have mentioned in the past as well I am not impressed with his assistant GM’s either.
Contrary to that statement the flames have a very good scouting staff that have uncovered some very good players in the later rounds.

    • We’re taking about Sutter right? It was clearly an geriatric ownership decision

  3. Even if the Flames do nothing this year I bet they have a good year only because that is the pattern that has developed over the past 8 years.
Unfortunately they do not have a Stanley cup winning roster so something has to happen.

Most of the scribes always point out that Tkachuk is the perfect player for Sutter and I was in agreement with that assessment. But the reality is Tkachuk is lazy. He is lazy on the ice and only plays hard when he thinks he can score.
The few games I would go to he used to make me mad at how lazy he was on the ice.
Case in point if he gets knocked down and the play is going back he just stays down for a couple of seconds then slowly gets up and casually skates back to the play or hopes the play comes back to him.
The other coaches used to let him get away with that but Sutter is trying to hold him accountable. Unfortunately instead of fixing his lazy play he is pouting

  4. Where were all the insiders during yesterday trades?

Insiders now 5 minutes before actual trade.

  5. Thoughts on what the Bruins might do this offseason ….. with trades UFA or RFA signings

  6. Still think Rangers will be in on any Eichel trade. But, if Monahan is being floated, they’ll inquire. Traded away Howden. They’re protecting Rooney due to need. I just don’t see them not doing something to upgrade at center. Buchnevich name has been in rumors now daily. Yesterday there was talk of a trade for Horvat, which I found surprising. Don’t know where that came from.

    • I don’t know where that came from either. I can’t find a single thing that suggests there was any talk about Horvat. Makes very little sense.

  7. I would take Kyrou Thomas and Dunn for Tkachuk.especially if they lose Gio in the draft Flip some conditional picks around to make everyone comfortable

  8. I realize that I left Tarasenko out . Don’t really want a one for one with him. Maybe in a blockbuster

  9. George. Just saw a tweet from “insider” Strickland: “Ryan Strome drawing decent amount of trade interest. Ottawa among those teams”
    Thoughts?

    • Strome would be a nice addition to a lot of teams Slick62, but looking ahead I truly believe Ottawa’s top 3 C will be Stutzle, Norris and Pinto. And even if Stutzle remains at wing, the only possible trade C that would step in and become the # 1 ahead of Norris and Pinto over the next few seasons would be Monahan – IF they could get him.

I think Dorion’s targets will be a scoring RW and a RD to play alongside Chabot (to be is Mark Methot so to speak).

      • We’ll throw in DeAngelo!

      • George, I’ve seen Strome as an Isle and a Ranger.
        You don’t want him.
He’s one of those players who only plays well with top line players.

His best years with the Isles were with JT.
Once he and JT separated, he went into the tank.
When he went to the Rangers he came alive with the Breadman.

Does Ottawa have a Breadman or a JT to partner Strome with? I am not that familiar with the Sens.

How about some love for the 2 time GM of the year?
Double L showed the Hockey World why he is the master.
How’s that Dubas guy doing in Toronto?

      • Nevinsrip they call him “boy wonder” around these parts… so good?
