Sunday NHL Rumor Roundup – October 9, 2022

Should the Bruins attempt to acquire Patrick Kane? Will John Klingberg be with the Ducks for long? What’s the latest on the Islanders? Find out in the Sunday NHL Rumor Roundup.

SHOULD THE BRUINS PURSUE KANE?

THE BOSTON GLOBE: Kevin Paul Dupont wonders what it might take for the Bruins to acquire Patrick Kane if the Chicago Blackhawks winger became available in the trade market. The 33-year-old Kane remains among the league’s elite forwards. Adding him alongside Patrice Bergeron or David Krejci would give the Bruins two dynamic forward lines.

Chicago Blackhawks winger Patrick Kane (NHL Images).

Kane carries a $10.5 million salary cap hit. Assuming he’d agree to waive his no-movement clause to join the Bruins, Dupont suggested they offer up winger Jake DeBrusk ($4 million cap hit), defenseman Brandon Carlo ($4.1 million) and either Jack Studnicka or Jakub Zboril. That package would make the dollars fit plus provide the Blackhawks with more ready assets than a return of futures.

The Blackhawks will also seek a first-round pick. Dupont believes that would be a deal killer unless it was made conditional on Kane signing a contract extension with the Bruins.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Dupont is merely speculating here. He’s not saying the Bruins have made a pitch for Kane or that the winger is willing to waive his NMC to come to Boston.

Any interest Bruins management might have in Kane will depend on where the club sits in the standings as the March 3 trade deadline approaches. Dupont’s suggested trade package isn’t bad but I doubt it’s enough to convince the Blackhawks to part with the future Hall-of-Famer. There could be other clubs with more tradeable assets capable of outbidding the Bruins.

WILL THE DUCKS MOVE KLINGBERG AT THE TRADE DEADLINE?

THE SCORE: The Anaheim Ducks trading John Klingberg at the March 3 trade deadline is among John Matisz’s 23 predictions for the coming NHL season. He pointed out that the rebuilding Ducks only signed the 30-year-old defenseman to a one-year, $7 million contract.

Klingberg also carries a modified no-trade clause preventing him from being moved before Jan. 1, after which he submits a 10-team no-trade list.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Ducks and Klingberg could surprise us by agreeing to a contract extension if his tenure goes well with them. Nevertheless, I concur with Matisz that the puck-moving rearguard is likely to be shopped by the March trade deadline.

HOW WILL BARZAL’S NEW CONTRACT AFFECT THE ISLANDERS?

NYI HOCKEY NOW: Stefen Rosner examined how Mathew Barzal’s eight-year, $73.2 million contract extension could impact the New York Islanders going forward.

Kieffer Bellows and Oliver Wahlstrom will be restricted free agents next summer. Rosner speculates Bellows could become a trade chip while Wahlstrom’s next contract will depend on his offensive production this season.

Defenseman Scott Mayfield and goaltender Semyon Varlamov are slated to become unrestricted free agents next July.

Rosner wonders if Mayfield could become the odd man out on their blueline with the Isles having their top-four defense already under contract and promising Robin Salo in the lineup. As for Varlamov, the Isles could keep him if he’s willing to accept a 50 percent pay cut from his current annual average value of $5 million.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Wahlstrom will likely be re-signed but I wouldn’t rule out the possibility that he becomes a trade candidate if his performance doesn’t improve this season. I think they’d like to keep the steady Mayfield but another solid season on his part could make that too expensive to pull off.

Varlamov, 34, has terrific chemistry with Ilya Sorokin. Maybe he’ll accept a cut in pay to around $3 million for 2023-24 to return as Sorokin’s backup.

  1. You know what I don’t understand? Why we are seeing almost daily speculation on Kane’s future, primarily concerning where he’ll be traded to (with the built in assumption that he will be traded), but there has been zero speculation concerning Dylan Larkin, who is also in the final year of his contract.

    • I also think there are no Larkin rumors because he will be resigned. Hoping for a massive stat contract year for my fantasy(nerd yes) .

If Boston is sniffing a playoff run potential they should send away more assets for a Kane. If no Berg, Krecji next season this team is not doing much. go for it one more time

      • There is no proof that either Larkin or Kane will be resigned or traded. Yet, the assumptions are that Kane will agree to be traded, probably at the deadline, and Larkin will sign an extension. And it’s all based on someone’s speculation, possibly a couple of bloggers with no inside information.

    • Significant difference Paul. Kane is 8 years older than Larkin, and is playing for a team expected to bottom out this season. Chicago just this year started to tear down the roster and acquire picks & prospects. They will most likely not compete for much for a few years, throughout most of Kanes remaining career. Larkin plays for a team that started their teardown 5 years ago, is on the rise, and should develop into contenders within the coming seasons. Kane may well decide that he is a Black Hawk at his core, and ride it out to the end, or maybe not. Larkin can see some light at the end of the tunnel, is a local kid, and truly wants to stay.

      • Let’s bottom line it. Absolutely no one, other than Kane and Larkin themselves, knows what they’re going to do. Even if one of them said, today, that he wants to stay, if he prices himself out of Chicago/Detroit or may change his mind before the trade deadline. So, in my mind, if there’s going to be almost daily speculation about one, the same amount of energy should be spent on the other.

      • well your mind is wrong. The probability of one being traded is far greater than the other. The trade chatter reflects that. However you are correct anything can happen, even nothing.

      • Paul we are counting on you to balance the conversation scales. You can do it!

  2. I believe Larkin was mentioned either yesterday or day before? Most folks believe he’ll get extension. Highly doubtful he goes anywhere.
IMO the Bruins package suggested doesn’t make much sense. Granted, nothing Chicago does lately makes sense. Just can’t see them wanting those “ready” pieces after trading away Dach, Hagel, and DeBrincat.

    • Debrusk 92 career goals JP 46; Debrusk with seasons of 25 and 27 goals; JP best is 15 and 14 goals.

If I’m Don Sweeney that package is never on the table.

Whoever wants to say Chicago can get better offers, then by all means.

This isn’t to say Kane wouldn’t be a huge improvement 1st line RW playing with Marchand and Bergeron. The question is can Boston win the cup with the addition of Kane and subtraction of Debrusk, Carlo and Zboril.

We don’t know what kind of player Marchand will be when he returns from double hip surgery or what a full season of aging veterans Bergeron and Krejci will be. As it’s been noted the Bruins rank close to if not in the bottom of prospect pool.

Removing three 25yr old players and replacing them with a soon to be 34yr old ufa does nothing but set the club back years.

This deal should only be considered around the trade deadline and only if you think Kane is the missing piece for a legitimate shot at the cup.

      • Way to much for KANE ????Zboril is a 6th or 7th at best . Studnicka at this point is a bust . DEBRUSK Will be Ufa after this year and is a soft 3rd liner . Carlo is the only good piece coming back . Hawks are overloaded on D prospects and Carlo does not give them what they need or fit their rebuild timeline he is a top 4 defensive dman not a top two puck mover PP dman . This trade is a joke . Hawks gm wants to draft his future team so it’s 1 st ROUNDERS or a combo of A+ prospects and pics . Dupont is a clown for even proposing this trade . It gives the Hawks nothing of what they need in 2 to 3 years when they will be competing again .

  3. DeBrusk is like Puljujarvi, mediocre third liners who are being paid like second liners, limited actual production despite continuous hope of upside.

The Bruins have limited tangible NHL ready prospects in their system and they’ve been giving away draft picks.

I would argue that if Chicago deals Kane they’d get a lot more than DeBrusk, another warm body and a conditional draft if Kane signs.

The dollars fit in that proposal but that benefits Boston and for the cap strapped Bruins that should come at a cost. Trying to dictate terms of a conditional draft is likely to get you laughed out the door.

    • Frank. Agree to disagree. Debrusk gas 2 of his 4 seasons with 25 or more goals. He was greatly affected mentally from covid lock downs and it showed in his game JP is not even close to the same level as Jake is Based on his play he is underpaid at 4 million Kane is not going to bruins his pkg starts with a 1st rd pick plus plus plus.

  4. Kane is going to be traded, and then come back and sign with the hawks. Him in another team’s sweater will be like that of Modano in Red Wings jersey. Or Gretzky in a Blues jersey.

    • Starsfan,
i think your Right about Kane going back to the Hawks after a playoff run…..
      But what
Boston Globes Reporter Kevin Paul Dupont said
is WAY to much in a trade for Kane….❗️

Boston is Not that Deep they cant do a Huge Player give away like he said
Dupont suggested they offer up winger Jake DeBrusk ($4 million cap hit),
      defenseman Brandon Carlo ($4.1 million)
and either Jack Studnicka or Jakub Zboril
      and a 1st round Pick…….

      • If Kane says I’m only going to ny then they won’t get close to your ask.

      • Babouie, Zboril will be a top 4 for Boston this year and it won’t be because they don’t have the depth; yes, he is that good.

  5. Boston not going to be chasing any Cup
    Never say Never ?
New York is a strong possibility for Kane

    • Ken,
I agree NY is a strong possibility, but I also could see Lou getting him at the deadline, if the NYI are in playoff position.
It would remind me, of when Lou traded for Mogilny when he was in NJD.

  6. Trading for 2022-23 Patrick Kane, with 0 term on an expiring contract is a ridiculous notion for the Bruins.
2012-13 Patrick Kane? Sign me up.

  7. Kane will be the biggest name in rental market in awhile. How much he will cost is tough to predict. If he is dead set on a specific team it will limit the return. If he is dead set on returning to the hawks he should open himself up to a trade to most playoff contenders. The return would be better for the hawks thus quickening their return to relevance possibly while he still is playing.

  8. i don’t see where trading debrusk, carlo and those other two guys/ or one of those other guys would help the Bruins in any way? Just to have Kane on the wing? The Bruins would be getting older not better. Seems like speculation. I wouldn’t do it if I were them because those guys are good young players and when Bergeron and Krejci are gone then what?
Kane would be in a similar situation that he is in now with the Blackhawks wouldn’t he? The Bruins seem like they are headed in the wrong direction IMHO. I don’t know, they did surprise me last year taking the Hurricanes to game 7. I didn’t think they had a chance of winning 1 of those games. Anything is possible, I guess but I hate when teams mortgage the future for 1 superstar! GO AVS!!!!!!!!

    • tommyboy, you keep a close watch on the comings and goings within the Avs system – what’s up with Shane Bowers?

I remember when Ottawa took him 28th overall in 2017 and then dealt his rights to the Avs in the 3-way deal involving Duchene, the consensus in here was, Dorion had been hosed.

Now, 5 years later and with 117 AHL games under his belt, he has yet to get even a sniff in an NHL game, and yesterday cleared waivers!

If there was indeed anything there you’d think someone would have plucked him, off waivers. Are there other issues? Injuries?

      • I don’t know, George O, to be honest. Bednar was signing his praises during camp this year. So, I thought he had a chance to make the team this year? Last year, he was banged up somewhat and perhaps that was the reason? I know, it’s got to be considered a disappointment at present because he was highly regarded! There talking like he could be an earlier season call up now but just a couple of weeks ago, they were saying he might make the club. I’m reading between the lines as if he has improved but he’s not any better than some of the other guys like Sedlack and Helms that Coach Bednar likes?

  9. Regarding Varly on the Island, I wouldn’t doubt that Lou has/had a handshake agreement w/ him regarding not moving the goaltender even after his “below standard” play last season. $3M AAV would be fantastic, IF he takes it. A really solid this year, writes that ticket. Skarek in the wings- he looks more than solid- if necessary. The NEW “Russian Connection” is Romanov-Sorokin, Soshnikov(?). Ilya & Romy best friends & teammates in KHL.

  10. Kane’s too old to give up a first, if this was four, five years ago of course, too much . Kane’s been fairly injury free the last few years but, given his size and age that can soon change. Sign Pastrnak already!!
Once Sweeney does this he’ll do a few curtsy’s and victory laps, before fans start to question what it is he’s really done to improve this team. Answer, absolutely nothing.

    • Since NYR has 2 1sts in 2023. I could see them exchanging it in a trade for Kane with a Chicago 2nd.
Kane at 1/2 salary + Chi 2nd for Krappo, Zack Jones, NYR 1st for example.

  11. Off topic, but I bet Crosby finishes in the top 5 in the scoring race.

    • Duh

      • I was gonna say top 3.
        Double duh?

    • I’ll take that bet. But you don’t get any out clause for injuries etc.

  12. Coyotes have claimed Valimaki from Calgary.. wondering if Chychrun talks are heating up?

  13. If Ian Cole is found guilty of these new allegations, he should be removed from the league.

  14. Hey George! Is Ottawa gonna claim Chris Tierny?
