GAME RECAPS

NHL.COM: The Boston Bruins became the fastest team to reach 100 points in league history (61 games) by thumping the Buffalo Sabres 7-1. Jakub Lauko scored twice and Dmitry Orlov had a goal and two assists for the Bruins (48-8-5) as they sit atop the overall standings with 101 points. The Sabres slipped to 31-25-4 (66 points) and are four points out of the final Eastern Conference wild-card berth.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Bruins winger Brad Marchand left the game in the second period after being hit by Sabres defenseman Ilya Lyubushkin. Acquired early yesterday from the Red Wings, Tyler Bertuzzi did not appear in this contest.

Before the game, the Bruins placed winger Taylor Hall on long-term injury reserve and forward Nick Foligno on injured reserve. The Sabres placed defenseman Rasmus Dahlin on IR.

An overtime goal by Jason Zucker lifted the Pittsburgh Penguins to their fourth straight win with a 5-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning. It was Zucker’s second goal of the game while Jeff Petry also scored twice for the 31-21-9 Penguins as they vaulted over the idle New York Islanders into the first Eastern wild-card spot with 71 points. Steven Stamkos and Brayden Point each had two points for the Lightning (37-19-5), who have dropped three straight and sit third in the Atlantic Division with 79 points.

Mika Zibanejad collected two assists for the 35-18-9 Rangers, who sit in third place in the Metropolitan Division with 79 points.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Patrick Kane was held scoreless in his debut with the Rangers as was Jakob Chychrun in his first game with the Senators following their respective trades. Senators forward Austin Watson received a five-minute major and a game misconduct for charging Rangers forward Tyler Motte, who left the game with an upper-body injury.

The Toronto Maple Leafs nipped the Calgary Flames 2-1. Calle Jarnkrok broke a 1-1 tie early in the third period for the 38-16-8 Leafs as they hold second place in the Atlantic Division with 84 points. Jacob Markstrom made 32 saves for the flickering Flames as they slipped to 27-22-13 (67 points) and sit five points behind the Winnipeg Jets for the final Western Conference wild-card spot.

Dallas Stars center Roope Hintz tallied a hat trick in a 5-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks. The Stars (33-16-13) sit in first place in the Central Division with 79 points, three up on the second-place Minnesota Wild. The Blackhawks dropped to 21-35-5 on the season.

Speaking of the Wild, Kirill Kaprizov scored twice as they downed the Vancouver Canucks 2-1. With a record of 35-21-6, the Wild (76 points) are three points ahead of the third-place Colorado Avalanche in the Central Division. Brock Boeser scored for the Canucks as they fell to 24-32-5.

Seattle Kraken winger Oliver Bjorkstrand tallied twice, including the winner in overtime, in a 5-4 win over the Detroit Red Wings. Jared McCann also scored two goals for the Kraken (34-21-6) as they moved into third place in the Pacific Division with 74 points. The Red Wings (28-24-9) dropped their fourth straight game and are five points out of the final Eastern wild-card berth with 65 points.

Los Angeles Kings captain Anze Kopitar scored the game-winner as his club held off the Montreal Canadiens for a 3-2 win. Gabe Vilardi scored his 20th of the season for the 35-20-8 Kings as they sit in second place in the Pacific Division with 78 points. Denis Gurianov scored his first goal with the Canadiens (26-31-4) since being acquired in a trade earlier this week.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Canadiens defenseman Justin Barron left the game in the first period with an upper-body injury.

The Nashville Predators kept their playoff hopes alive by beating the Florida Panthers 2-1. Matt Duchene and John Leonard scored for the Predators while Kevin Lankinen stopped 30 shots for the 30-23-6 Predators, who are six points out of the final Western wild-card berth with 66 points. Brandon Montour replied for the Panthers (30-27-6) as they are four points out of the Eastern wild-card spot with 66 points.

A four-goal second period lifted the St. Louis Blues to a 6-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks. Pavel Buchnevich collected four assists for the 27-29-5 Blues while Alexander Barabanov had a goal and an assist for the 18-32-12 Sharks.

HEADLINES

THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS: Following last night’s game, the Stars acquired forward Max Domi and goaltender Dylan Wells from the Blackhawks in exchange for goalie Anton Khudobin and a 2025 second-round pick.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Domi was the Blackhawks’ leading scorer this season with 49 points in 60 games. A versatile forward who can play center or wing, he’ll provide a boost to the Stars’ middle-six down the stretch and into the postseason.

Khudobin was moved solely to make the dollars work for the cap-strapped Stars. He’s spent this season in the minors. Both players are slated to become unrestricted free agents on July 1.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: The Oilers acquired center Nick Bjugstad and minor-league defenseman Cam Dineen from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for minor-league defenseman Michael Kesselring and a 2023 third-round pick.

  1. Still no coverage (in any shape or form down here)of hockey ; forced to quickly scan TSN and NHL.com on web between meetings for scores and trades

Glad to see a Pens “V” over Bolts and Leafs over Flames. Was there a disallowed goal in the Leafs game? I’d checked intermittently online last night and it was showing at one point 2-1 Flames ; then later 1-1; finally Leafs up 1???

So many articles re how badly Hextall has done this year but even more so in last few days; have to share this good summation of the Hextall experience (he’s going to cost the Pens ; long long long after he’s gone):

Joe Starkey: Penguins’ Kasperi Kapanen disaster had ramifications that will last | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

    https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/joe-starkey/2023/03/02/pittsburgh-penguins-nhl-trade-deadline-mikael-granlund-jeff-carter-kasperi-kapanen/stories/202303020086

Note…. Hextal could have had Bjug (for just $125 K in actual remaining Cap) for a 3rd this year; to play 3C. Bjug 13-10-23 in 59 (note done on thr horrific Yotes) GP is 8” taller and 30lbs heavier…. Could have used the extra $4.5 M (annual rate) Cap on other moves

Domi …. Just $3M in annual Cap hit; 18-31-49 in 60 GP (on the lowly ‘22-‘23 BlackHawks ); AND Davidson had to take on Khudobin’s contract…. So net impact was $200 K in actual Cap; for the balance of the year… 2nd rounder…. THREE (3) drafts from now!!!

Could have got Neiderreitter; OR Chychrun OR Hronrk OR Korp AND Gav OR Schenn OR , OR, OR…. the list goes on and on

Instead…. Pushed to Cap ceiling; can only have 21 on roster; team got smaller; shorter; older; less gritty; and substantially worse defensively…. Now ; AND for another 2 years!!!

    George, Dark G et al

How much to flip Dumo for Talbot ?…. Both UFAs, very similar Cap hit. Seriously asking

Going to miss all the deadline trades today (sarcasm)….. are there any left?

Surprised Canes have only done JP and Ghost!!

Bolts moved Vlad…. Is BrisBoise tinkering for another move?

Jets have only done the Niederreiter move… more??

All moves seem moot now that Bruins are not only continuing to roll along setting records; but loaded up to the hilt!!

    • Pengy, just Google NHL Scores ESPN – you’ll get every game’s box-score.

And what the heck would Ottawa want with Dumoulin? To replace who, exactly? Talbot isn’t going anywhere (nor is Watson). In fact, I’ll be surprised if Dorion does anything today,

      • Thanks George

Flying back home later this aft

Seriously…. Must have asked 50 people here re hockey news…. Well more than 1/2 didn’t even know what hockey was …. Wow

Te Dumo…. No of course Sens won’t want him; never meant they would

        No one wants him

Was just trying to find out ask on Talbot and Pens trades need to be basically dollar in dollar out

Talbot is on the TSN trade bait board…. So TSN thinks there is s possibility of moving him

I know you disagree with moving him; but if they did flip Dumo/Talbot …. What’s the ask?

I would have put DeSmith, but he has 1 more year…. So that won’t happen

Might not be able to see your response until tonight

      • The point is moot on Talbot – Dorion was on with Duthie this morning and said, almost flat out, that he’s done dealing.
        \
Had he been prepared to deal him anywhere the return would almost have had to be a goalie – when he got him from the Wild he dealt Filip Gustavsson for him, and he was a 2nd round pick (and is doing well in Minnesota).

I seriously doubt Jarry would interest him. In fact, after the Matt Murray fiasco, I doubt he’d want any part of any Penguins goalie.

    • the move I don’t get by Hextall was trading Marino so he could acquire Petry, who had struggled the last couple of seasons with Montreal. Marino is so sound defensively, and now the Pens are a mess defensively

      • Some Habs fans were critical of this trade – thinking they should have got a better return. Matheson’s been injured a lot, but so far it’s been a good trade for the Habs.

      • Well he had many strange moves

Converting Marino and Matheson into Petry and Smith (Sully won’t play him) and Poehling (oft injured) to save $250 K…. Serious blunder

        Expansion draft…. Ouch!!

      • ok George and Pengy.

Who do you think the Sen’s Should Look at for a Starter for next season..❓Give me your Top 3
        my 3 picks are below..

We all know Cam Talbot $3.66M is not the Answer there, and not coming back as a starter
        Nether is Anton Forsberg a starter @ $2.75 M

if you can move Forsberg and his salary as part of a deal to get a starter basicly a salary dump to a team… ❓ and you dont sign Talbot you have $6.4M to spen on a Starting Goaltender✔️

The Sens weakest link right now is Goaltending
top 3 out there right now, is in No Order hear

-Gibson 29, from the Ducks $6.4M for4.5 yrs
        Or
-Demko 27, from the Canucks $5m for 3.5 yrs
        Or
        UFA
Tristan Jarry is 27, from the Pens, To get him You would have to pay him $5.5 to $6M range to get Jarry as a UFA….🤔

I dont think he wants to stay there long term with the Pen’s as they are going into a Full re-biuld in the next 18 months, Sens are a Great Very Young Team thats up and coming team
Any 3 of them would be happy to join the Sen’s Now…..⁉️

    • What do you by “Still no coverage (in any shape or form down here)of hockey”?

I’m just trying to understand… are you upset about the lack of hockey coverage in your state/province?

I don’t mean to sound critical. I’m just trying to understand what the concern is.

      • Pengy is spending trade deadline week on a business trip in Mississippi; not exactly a hockey hot bed.

      • Biloxi…. Hime of NO Hockey fans

      • I was in Biloxi once … many years ago (1958) when I went to New Orleans at Mardi Gras time with a bunch of buddies (two car loads) and, after meeting up with some nice young ladies clubbing in the French Quarter, woke up in a strange bed in Biloxi! No cell phones in those days, so it was an adventure getting back to NO and finding the crew. I do recall thinking “why would anyone INTENTIONALLY visit Biloxi?”

  2. Good morning and Happy Deadline Day to all those of us who celebrate.

I’ll be tied up at work at least through early afternoon but I’ve instructed my family to let me know once the Habs trade Monahan, Edmundson, Armia, Drouin and Hoffman for five 1st round picks and five good prospects.

  3. Rangers were missing Lindgren and Miller on left D and reinforced my feelings on Mikkola. He’s awful. It’s like Nemeth 2.0. Not sure what they saw in this guy. and he’s carrying a 1.9 cap hit. Are there any left D available today? I’d take Braun back for another run at this point.
Fan darling Chytil is my other pet peave. Just not a playmaker and gets knocked off puck pretty easily. Terrible on faveoffs. Can’t see them trading him today but, have to move him in off season.

    • There’s Joel Edmundson. Make me an offer.

      • Dumo and Ruhweedel… it’s an offer

        LOL

Seriously … Dumo and 1st (lottery protected)

  4. I miss Rick and his great insights and knowledge of all things Bruins. I wish they would have listened to him before the season started and fired Sweeny, trade Ullmark and Foligno for anything. That’s just a few of the great moves he would’ve done. Boston looks incredible. I don’t remember the last time I’ve seen a team play with that much passion, pride and cohesiveness.

    • I srsly do miss Rick’s colourful commentary.

  5. Bonino. Pens problems solved

    • Ahhh, the second coming!!

  6. The Buffalo Sabres sit just outside the second wild card spot. With 22 games left, the most points they can finnish with is 110.

Boston has 101 pts, only 10pts away from clinching a playoff spot, with 21 games left to play. Yes they’re having a great regular season.

    • Re; the East playoff final 7 & 8 Spot

I think Buffalo will be in the playoffs before The Caps and the Pens this year….
The big thing they need is a Starting Goaltender in Buffalo exact same as Ottawa’s Needs….🤔

I dont think the Pens 27 yr old Starting Goaltender Tristan Jarry Will Stay in Pittsburgh after this season as it will be a Re-buil and Or Re-tool……. 🤔❓

Just the same as The Caps are about to do, but the Pens have a very poor prospect pool as Rutherford traded it All away when he was there…‼️

  7. @SOP

As per my comparison Orlov/ AKA Zeleno Chara

You replied – Orlov is good , but not a Chara

U at right – Everyone is viewing him as Bobby Orlov

Talked about a best kept secret , a change in coach – give him a green light to go on the Offense

Great skater , great shot , vision

No longer a rental this guy , Bruins will figure out a way to sign him ..

What’s he got “8” points already
    Wow !
This guy really flew under the radar
    Steal of a deal !

    • Yes, Ken. He’s been great thus far. He was the Caps second best defenseman for about seven years. He comes as advertised. I believe he’s looking for six or seven years of term. It would be a luxury to lock him up.
I’m trying hard to temper my expectations, but the team looks pretty spectacular. Win or bust. I pray it’s the former.

  8. Does every other team in the NHL when they they have a player with a injury call it a lower or upper body injury … I don’t pay much attention to other teams but notice the Bruins almost never pinpoint the injury their players have .. lower or upper body and that’s it

  9. Come on Sweeney go get Lucic

    • If Foligno will be out until the playoffs, this actually makes sense (assuming 50 percent retained). If not, would be tough to make the cap hit work.

    • I’d do that. Just need Tre to hold 50% and another team to help broker the deal by holding another 25%. I’m a hopeless romantic.
Lucic will be a GM one day.

      • I wouldn’t sign Lucic, nothing against the guy and may make a good GM one day, maybe even in BOS, but he doesn’t skate well enough or handle the puck well enough to take anybody’s’ spot on the B’s. They have enough grit, they are big enough too, but mostly he isn’t good enough.

The B’s are so good because they are so deep. Have to be able to skate so you defend, and apply pressure all over the ice, on every line in Boston and that includes the 4th one.

Lucic playing on your 4th line isn’t stopping Pasta or McAvoy from getting hit hard. News flash, teams will run at them in playoffs. Just like Frederic, Hathaway and Foligno etc are gonna hit Marner and Reilly if they play them.

B’s won’t back down or quit playing the way they need to.

      • Yeah, Ray. All of that is undoubtedly true. It would just be for nostalgia for me. Having one more piece of the old group back home. Silly, I know, but like it said, it’s just the romance of it all.

      • Give him an office job next year SOP!
Maybe he goes home to Vancouver?

  10. Would love to see the Oilers Go After connors old Team Mate RW 24 yr old Taylor Radish from the Hawks… 👍

Raddish has been playing 3rd line centre,
But when Kane was out injured a couple of time this season He filled in nicely on the 2nd line,
    has 14 goals & 12 assists this year in his 2nd season…
The Oil need to get a Top 6 RW winger..❓🤔

    • I would like to get Radko Gudas. Kulak or Ceci would have to go the other way to make the cap work. The issue is that both Ceci and Kulak have term left on their contracts.
I honestly don’t think Holland can do anything else. The Oilers just don’t have enough cap space left. Unless Yamamoto goes on LTIR, which Dreger reported yesterday that he has some soreness, but nothing to be concerned about.
      https://twitter.com/DarrenDreger/status/1631381876223909894

      • I had suggested (pre Ekholm) ….

Yammo for Soucy and a 3rd rounder

      • I would love for the Oilers to get Soucy. It would cost more than Yamamoto to get him though. Plus I don’t see Seattle trading him inside their own division. Especially to a team that they may meet in the playoffs.

  11. Hextall did it again…. Git the team older still (Bonino in and a younger roster player must sit to make room for him)

For a 5th and 7th he could have got the Staal bros…. Eric in at 3C (slightly better than Bonino this year; and much bigger); Mark as depth D add

    LOL

What happened to Hextall’s claim of only making trades that make Pens better now and in future

The 3C move should have been Henriques (before the Granlund trade)

At least try and get Edmunson (he has one more year)

    • No thanks. Edmundson back is an issue….

      • Yes big George Laraque said 3 weeks ago on the Edmonton Radio that Hab d/man Joel Edmundson back is an big issue… and the oil should niot trade for him…👍

    • Carson Soucey is a UFA in July…👍
Sounds like he will test the UFA market then.

I can see the Oilers looking at him then as they still need to up-graid the d/ a bit more he would be a good addition to the Oil and can play both RD/LD…❓

  12. Anybody else think the Leafs need insurance in net?

Khudobin? Chicago already got a 2nd for him. Could they retain salary and get another asset for him? He took Dallas to the SCF a few years ago

  13. Canes are in Arizona today and RBA said he is going to try and get Ghost some power play time, if they get a power play. Hard to believe the Canes are 26th in the league in penalties drawn when they typically have opponents chasing the game and trying to slow them down. New Jersey has the same problem, they are 28th in penalties drawn.
