NHL Rumor Mill – March 3, 2023

by | Mar 3, 2023 | Rumors | 24 comments

The Trade Deadline is 3 pm ET today. Check out the latest in today’s NHL Rumor Mill.

LATEST ON THE FLYERS

THE ATHLETIC: Charlie O’Connor explains why the Philadelphia Flyers haven’t been active leading up to deadline day. It’s because the Flyers lack the kind of assets that other teams believe should be prioritized. They’re either fall-back rentals (James van Riemsdyk) or veterans with expensive contracts (Kevin Hayes) that can be difficult to move by the deadline.

TSN: Chris Johnston believes van Riemsdyk remains on the Vegas Golden Knights’ radar. The Winnipeg Jets could also be interested. The Flyers could retain half of his $7 million cap hit to facilitate a trade.

TEAMS INTERESTED IN JOEL EDMUNDSON

TSN: Pierre LeBrun reports a couple of teams are interested in Montreal Canadiens defenseman Joel Edmundson. One of them could be the Calgary Flames.

SPORTSNET: Eric Engels also cited a couple of sources claiming at least two playoff-bound clubs are interested in the 29-year-old Canadiens defenseman. Edmundson has a year remaining on his contract with a $3.5 million cap hit.

FLAMES GETTING CALLS ABOUT MIKAEL BACKLUND

CALGARY HOCKEY NOW: Steve MacFarlane reports there’s some late-breaking trade buzz around Flames forward Mikael Backlund as the club could be trending toward selling at the deadline. MacFarlane cited Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reporting that the Carolina Hurricanes are among the clubs calling the Flames to see whether they’re buying or selling.

CANUCKS STILL WORKING THE PHONES

CHEK TV’s Rick Dhaliwal reports the Vancouver Canucks are still working the phones. They’ve had talks with the Florida Panthers but he’s hearing it’s nothing major. Dhaliwal also shot down speculation linking J.T. Miller and Brock Boeser to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

LOGAN STANLEY REQUESTS TRADE FROM THE JETS

WINNIPEG SUN: Scott Billeck cited a report from Bally Sports’ Andy Strickland claiming defenseman Logan Stanley has asked the Jets for a trade.

LEAFS NOT DONE DEALING?

TORONTO STAR: Nick Kypreos believes the Maple Leafs could be in the market for some goaltending depth behind Ilya Samsonov.

WHICH SHARKS ARE MOST LIKELY TO BE TRADED?

SAN JOSE HOCKEY NOW: Sheng Peng listed Nick Bonino, James Reimer and Alexander Barabanov among his list of 10 Sharks who could be trade candidates. He also speculated recently acquired forward Vladislav Namestnikov could be flipped to a playoff contender.

ISLANDERS EYEING A DEFENSEMAN

NYI HOCKEY NOW: Stefen Rosner reported league sources claimed the Islanders have been in discussions with the Nashville Predators and St. Louis Blues. Isles GM Lou Lamoriello could be looking at acquiring a defenseman. Rosner mentioned a source believes Lamoriello should be looking at Predators blueliner Dante Fabbro.

MORE SPECULATION FROM TSN’S INSIDER TRADING

TSN: Chris Johnston reports the Ottawa Senators are still working the phones. They could be seeking another center.

Darren Dreger believes the Winnipeg Jets aren’t done dealing after acquiring winger Nino Niederreiter on Feb. 25. He thinks they’re still seeking a forward. He also thinks the Vegas Golden Knights could still be active.

Pierre LeBrun reports the Carolina Hurricanes are still trying to add to their roster. However, they have no appetite to part with their first-round pick for a rental player.

Great Game in Calgary last night with the Leafs Downing our Provincial rivals the Flames 2-1👌
Goaltending was Great tonight from both young Joseph Woll & Jacob MarkstrĂśm

It was end to end action, looking like the Flames will miss the playoffs now❗️👍

Surprised the Flames and Jets have made No Trade’s as they both Need Scoring up front for the past month or so❓🤔

looks like the Leafs will need time to jell with 3 new d/men and 4 New forwards in the line up
they looked much better tonight in Calgary than the did in Edmonton, the East is going to be Very Very Tough.

It sounds like the Flames are Trying to Trade RW Tyler Toffoli…..🤔
he would look Great in the oilers top 6 but know that Not happing

    • I think it would be a mistake for the Flames to trade Toffoli. He is one of the few players who is outperforming his contract on the team.
IMO the Flames should be looking to trade players like Dube, Lewis, Ritchie, and Zadorov. I would add Mangiapane but that contract will be hard to move.

      • McGinn,3rd round pick and prospect for Dube!

      • Not sure if you know this or not but the Pens don’t have any prospects.

      • Owen Pickering, look him up.
When has Ed ever been right about anything?

  2. The number of players to be moved this week just blows my mind. For a bit it seemed like every time I refreshed Twitter there was a new trade. I can’t imagine there will be much activity today, but then again, it wouldn’t surprise me a bit. Does anyone else remember this much activity leading up to deadline day?

    • In the last few years, there has been a GM or two who started their buying a week or two early. Triliving was one of them last season with the Toffoli trade. So I think that got some other GMs changing their strategy this year and it snowballed quickly.

  3. have a question for the peeps out there. what does eveybody think of the chances of andrew peeke being moved today and if so what they think the blue jackets could possibly get for him. thanks

    • There were some insiders reporting last week that CBJ were taking calls on Peeke (which was surprising) so it’s possible but in my opinion now looking less likely he gets moved at the deadline. They likely will move at least 1 right d-man in the offseason w/ Jiricek on the way so it will be interesting to see who the odd man out on that side will be.

    • Isn’t Peeke the type of d-man a rebuilding team want to keep?

      • I agree Kev, they just extended him last offseason so it’s interesting he was being mentioned at all. I wonder if his name was out there because CBJ was willing to include him in their offer for Chychrun? Perhaps now that boat has sailed they aren’t as amenable to trading him. One insider (Dreger or LeBrun I thnk) mentioned that Vancouver was interested in him and Roslovic at one time but I don’t know if that is accurate or current

    • With Gavrikov traded, Peeke is the only shutdown defenseman the Jackets have. I won’t rule out a trade, but it would have to be a hell of a return.

      • Hi Paul…completely agree. I suppose I could see them being willing to include Peeke in a deal for Chychrun because they felt he could be strong enough defensively to stablize the second pair but it certainly couldn’t be relied on as a “shut down” pairing no matter who was on the right. It will be interesting to see who they pivot to now w/ him in Ottawa. I suspect CBJ will be active heading into the draft w/ LA’s 1st rounder available

  4. I would like to know which rental Lebrun thinks is worth a 1st round pick at this point.

    • Radko Gudas.
I am strongly apposed to moving 1st round picks for rentals, but lesser d-men (McCabe) have been move for 1st rounders this year.

  5. Sheng Peng listed Nick Bonino as a trade candidate. Well, he ended up being traded back to his Stanley Cup team, the Pittsburgh Penguins.

  6. It turns out.

    Chychrun > Tarasenko + Kane

    Math is grand

    Hhaha

  7. I requested this day off from work a couple of months ago thinking it would be an exciting action packed deadline.

…sitting here on the couch at 10 in the morning, beer in hand with my hand down my pants lookin like AL Bundy disinterested.

    • I’m lucky enough that I have a job where I can stream TSN’s Trade Centre and listen while I work. But now I think if it having that beer just might be worth taking the day off for. lol

    • Haha! Awesome FD! I think alot of us are in the same boat…including the folks running the TDL TV Specials!

      Great analogy!

    • Time to take out the Big’Uns!Haha

  8. Definitely a strange time leading up to a trade deadline . Started with Horvat

Teams are polar opposites going for the cup or going for Bedard. Chicago and Arizona current roster – AHL caliber. Might as well trade Seth Jones yikes
There are a few teams in “no mans land” like Calgary. It sounds crazy but what about Lindholm ? He is going to be paid when his contract is up. You would get a first and a middle 6 prospect . Maybe more. My choice is Lucic with 50% with a third team. Maybe a 4th or 5th after all that They had better keep Pelletier

  9. Ed vanimpe

Since McGinn and a 3rd were already included for Dube, it wouldn’t have to be an A-list prospect! Not sure if you know this, but you’re not as smart as you think you are!!

    • Sjpp, deep down he knows he isn’t smart.

That’s why he’s so bitter and constantly trying to prop himself up by putting others down. One trick pony. Think about the guys in high school who did that, and then add decades of aging, and there he is.
