Notable NHL Trades For March 6, 2024

The NHL Trade Deadline is two days away but business has already picked up in the trade market:

Calgary Flames trade Noah Hanifin to the Vegas Golden Knights in a three-team trade involving the Philadelphia Flyers. The Flames receive a 2025 first-round pick, a conditional 2025 third-rounder and defenseman Daniil Miromanov. The third-rounder becomes a second-round pick if the Golden Knights win the 2024 Stanley Cup. The Flyers receive the Golden Knights’ 2024 fifth-round pick. The Flames are retaining 50 percent of Hanifin’s $4.95 million salary.

Buffalo Sabres trade center Casey Mittelstadt to the Colorado Avalanche for defenseman Bowen Byram.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: There was something to all that early speculation about Mittelstadt in January after all. The Sabres more depth to their blueline while the Avalanche address their need for a second-line center.

The Ottawa Senators trade Vladimir Tarasenko to the Florida Panthers for a 2025 third-round pick and a conditional 2024 fourth-rounder that becomes a third-round pick if the Panthers win the 2024 Stanley Cup. The Senators also retain 50 percent of Tarasenko’s $5 million cap hit.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Senators reportedly sought a first or second-round pick plus another asset. It appears Tarasenko’s trade value wasn’t as high as rumored.

The Edmonton Oilers acquired forwards Adam Henrique and Sam Carrick and a seventh-round pick from the Anaheim Ducks in a three-team deal involving the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Ducks receive the Oilers’ 2024 first-rounder and a conditional fifth-round pick in 2025 plus they’re retaining half of Henrique’s $5.825 million cap hit. The Lightning receive a fourth-rounder from the Oilers and retain half of Henrique’s remaining cap hit.

The Philadelphia Flyers trade defenseman Sean Walker and a 2026 fifth-round pick to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for center Ryan Johansen and the Avs’ 2025 first-round pick.

New York Rangers acquire center Alex Wennberg from the Seattle Kraken in exchange for a 2024 second-round pick and a conditional 2025 fourth-rounder. The Kraken also retains 50 percent of Wennberg’s salary.

  1. Johansen to Philly? LOL He forced his way out of Columbus because of Torts.

    • Does the Philly trade mean Laughton will be traded?

      • Flyers waived RyJo right away. They will trade him after he gets sent down. Unless the Hawks want him?

      • If Guentzel gets traded tonight, Pittsburgh should puck up Johanson off waivers

        Why?

        More than 7 1/2 years younger; 10 lbs heavier; much much stronger; waaaay faster; and this year (down year; and only $800,000 more in cap than: 82 Game pace of 16-14-31;

        Than

        Carter (39, 72 pace of 11-3-14 )

        And re Johansin pick up:
He is prime for a “change of scenery” boost in production; AND waivers pick up costs nothing in assets

I’d do this in a heart beat

    • not a chance in hell Johannson stays in philly, he hates torts, he must be moving again

      • Johansen will spend the rest of the season in the AHL and then be bought out.

  2. Avs stole Middlestadt

    • The Sabers will love Byram, I don’t know about stole? That’s a good trade for both teams: old fashion hockey trade which I thought was possible if the Avalanche were to trade either Byram/or Girard?……

Walker to Avalanche made that possible and while I was wrong about Flyer’s getting a 1st for him. It happened because they agreed to take Johansen’s contract. Then the Byram trade went down. Chris MacFarland know his business, very good GM. GO AVS!!!!!

    • Wasnt Byram buried on the 3rd pairing and has a concussion history? maybe Casey is playing this week in his new contract season but seems like Avs needed a 2nd line center who they badly needed

      • Byram was 3rd for Avs D for TOI. So their #3, by that measure. Just ahead of Girard, and behind Makar and Toews.

That’s pretty darn good for a 22 yr old D-man.
I luv how Byram plays the game, can do it all and is aggressive all over the ice. The year the Avs won the cup he was a star in the playoffs.

Concussions are for sure a concern. But he hasn’t missed much time this year. So was Middlestadt’s contract I guess, as BUF would have had cap challenges and had 2 other C’s they were happy with I guess, plus a couple more prospects in the pipeline like including Savoie.

I think both teams got what they needed, and both paid for it.

        Good ole’ hockey trade!

      • I like Byram for sure… worried his head injirues

      • I noticed that BUF sure has a lot of left shot d-men now. Byram can play his off side, but not ideal. I guess Power can as well.

Kind of a log jam if not.

      • Hmmmmm…..Maybe an Andersen for Power trade RHS for a LHS?

  3. Trade deadline is just that why wait till the last day … Keep it Coming

  4. Sabres needed a top 4 d man and they got him. Sell Casey high good for him. BUF has prospect depth at center too.

  5. As has been reported by just about every news outlet. The return for Tarasenko was low because the player, using the clause in his contract was able to limit his destination. I mean, his family lives in Florida. The panthers and the player had all the leverage here. I wouldn’t use this return as an example of what’s to be expected from other trades nor would I use it to assign true market value to the player. Other teams would have been required to pay more to get this player.

  6. And the Hurricanes sit on their hands.

  7. Avs. Much better today oil better too along with panthers

Will interesting to see if anyone claims RJ for free

    • He ain’t free. Has quite a cap hit through next year and playing horribly.

  8. Oilers making some solid moves.
    Colorado greatly improved.
    Florida looks… well… scary…
Ottawa has surrendered as they should.

Honestly looks like Boston and Florida are the beasts of the East.

    • Ya, I like what the Oil did. Henrique is a solid player, and can play multiple positions. 2nd PP and PK, good on the dot.
Carrick will is another decent face off guy, better size than Ryan as well. I like Ryan, solid 4th line vet guy, but pretty small come playoff time.

      Holland likes his flexibility.

      • Good assessments for sure.

You are right, and I had not realized it before, but Holland does like having multiple guys that play in different situations. Smart especially in playoffs.

  9. I believe Ottawa deal was low return due to limited (Tarasenko in control with NTC) trade partners

Henrique and Carrick , with a first , fourth, and fifth; going, but Henrique coming in only at 25%, and losing no roster players; a tad high I believe. The huge surprise to me is Tampa Bay retaining.I thought Tampa Bay was tight on space and wanted to make moves???

Rangers and Wennerberg at 50%. I think Rangers did well

Avalanche paying 1st, Byram , and Johanssson to get Middelstatdt (RFA) and Walker (UFA) , to me , was quite an overpayment

Still waiting for as big as possible return for Guentzel

    For buyers:

Reasonably low Cap hit (can be sent down in worst case and doesn’t count against Cap) UFA depth D on teams definitely “selling”

    Dermott $800,000 Arizona
    Ruhweedel $800,000 Pittsburgh
    Stetcher $1,100,000 Arizona
Staal (not sure if Philly IS selling) $1,100,000
    Smith $1,100,000 New Jersey

    • Oil could use one of those depth D, right shot preferably as they have Broberg for the LD.

Who is left in the Guentzel sweepstakes?

      The 3-way deal?

Lindholm has to be wondering WTF if the rumor is true.

  10. Bruins should claim Ryj off waivers and waive Forbert
Fill a need for no assets

    • Only reason to claim him is if he can win face offs!

    • Bruins have no cap space. Ryj’s cap hit is $4 million. Waiving Forbort would only save $1.15 million if unclaimed. Boston would have to put Lindholm on LTIR and keep him out of the lineup until the playoffs start.

  11. Hanifin to Vegas.

  12. Sweeney had been trying to get Hanifan for 9 years …

  13. Kevin Weeks threw this out there …. Speculation

    Guentzel to @Canucks
    DeBrusk to @penguins
    Lindholm to @NHLBruins
In a potential 3 way deal.

    • DeBrusk isn’t in the same league as Guentzel and Lindholm.
Dubas would not accept the 27 year old DeBrusk as the sole return for Guentzel.
      Boston would have to add.

      • Allan – 8787

Do you think Dubas would deal with the Leafs? After all…he drafted most of these guys.

Leafs need legit LW as well as RHD. Personally think Domi is not a good fit at 2C either.

1st, Robertson, Voit, Kampf for Guentzel at 50% retained?
