The Panthers tie their series with the Bruins, the Canucks rally to take Game 1 against the Oilers, the Ted Lindsay Award finalists are announced, and more in today’s NHL Morning Coffee Headlines.

GAME RECAPS

NHL.COM: The Florida Panthers thumped the Boston Bruins 6-1 in Game 2 of their best-of-seven second-round series. Aleksander Barkov had two goals and two assists, Sam Reinhart collected four helpers and Brandon Montour picked up three points as the Panthers even the series at a game apiece. Charlie Coyle replied for the Bruins and Jeremy Swayman was pulled in the third period after giving up four goals on 23 shots. The series moves to Boston for the next two games with Game 3 on Friday, May 10, at 7 pm EDT.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: This was a dominating performance by the Panthers. They outshot the Bruins 33-15, forcing them into making costly defensive mistakes.

The intensity between the Bruins and Panthers boiled over in the third period with the two clubs combining for 136 minutes in penalties. There was also a scrap between Bruins winger David Pastrnak and Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk.

Some observers wonder if the Bruins will start Linus Ullmark in Game 3 after pulling Swayman from this contest. I think they’ll return with Swayman given his solid overall performance in this postseason. He shouldn’t be punished for his teammate’s sloppy defense.

Vancouver Canucks winger Conor Garland scored the winning goal to cap a four-goal rally in a 5-4 victory over the Edmonton Oilers in Game 1 of their second-round series. Zach Hyman scored twice as the Oilers surged to a 4-1 lead in the second period. However, Elias Lindholm, J.T. Miller and Nikita Zadorov scored to set the stage for Garland’s game-winner. Game 2 is on Friday starting at 10 pm EDT.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Oilers had 14 shots on goal when they took a 4-1 lead. They only had four more over the rest of the game as Vancouver outshot them 24-18. The Canucks maintained their poise despite being dominated early in this game. Lindholm’s goal late in the second period cut the Oilers’ lead to 4-2, providing the spark for the Canucks third-period surge.

It was a big game for Canucks forward Dakota Joshua as he had a goal and two assists. This is the fifth straight win for the Canucks over the Oilers as they also swept the regular-season series 4-0.

Oilers forward Adam Henrique missed this game with a lower-body injury and is listed as day-to-day. He was replaced in the lineup by Connor Brown.

HEADLINES

NHL.COM: Tampa Bay Lightning winger Nikita Kucherov, Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon and Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews are the finalists for the Ted Lindsay Award as this season’s outstanding player as voted by NHLPA members.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Congratulations to the three finalists. Kucherov won the Lindsay in 2018-19 while Matthews took home the award in 2021-22. This is MacKinnon’s first time as a finalist for this award.

TSN: Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Brett Pesce (lower-body injury) has yet to resume skating and is listed as indefinitely out of the lineup.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Pesce’s absence is one reason the Hurricanes are down 2-0 in their second-round series against the Rangers. They miss his presence on their blueline.

OTTAWA SUN: Senators defenseman Thomas Chabot underwent successful surgery for a nagging wrist injury. The recovery period is two months and he’s expected to be ready for training camp in September.

The Senators decided to retain their first-round pick (seventh overall) in this year’s draft. The club will instead forfeit their first-rounder in 2025 or 2026. That’s punishment for former GM Pierre Dorion gave the Vegas Golden Knights the wrong information about Evgenii Dadonov’s 10-team no-trade list after trading the winger to Vegas in July 2021.

TSN: Utah’s NHL team will debut its name, logo and team colors in 2025-26. They will have jerseys with the name “Utah” on them for next season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: They’re currently being called the Utah franchise. Why not make that their team name going forward? Just kidding, of course. The new ownership intends to take its time coming up with the right name, logo and colors. That’s understandable given how quickly the franchise relocation from Arizona took place.

  1. I’m more excited about what number Marner will be wearing in Utah than the team name and logo.😁

  2. No doubt Fla. was the better team yesterday but I got to think Boston is upset with Tkaczuk fighting Pasternak after all their big boys Maroon, Frederic and Brazeau were sent to the room!

    • Watched the highlights this morning. TSN really made it seem them Pasta wanted the fight, told his coach so, and then when out and initiated it. Hard to say since everything TSN is so sensational, but it’s not like Tkachuk seized the opportunity with big boys in the locker room.

      • Watched it in real time. Bit of a gong show when the score got ugly. Sure seemed that way to me to Everydayboots.
It seemed to start by the penalty box when him and Tkachuk were getting the details from the ref. Then, right after discussing with Monty, Pasta had his gloves off as soon as he left the bench and before Tkachuk did, plus they were yacking at each other from the bench prior. Off they went.

Hey good on Pasta, it wasn’t pretty but he wasn’t going sit back and watch his team mates do all the dirty work.

    • SR,

they both asked there Coach’s if they could Fight…

you seen Pasta asking Montgomery if he could go….& he said yes go ahead if you want to
Pasta had a big smile on his face…, he is a gamer and not a fighter, But All Respect to Pasta 🤙🏿👍

Lets see what Big Pat Maroon dose with Chucky..😂

  3. In addition to not relinquishing this year’s 1st round pick as retribution for Dorion’s gaffe, there was indication that the Senators intend to use the pick themselves … although, I’m sure if the right offer came along involving a veteran term D they can use, or even a proven term and solid 3rd/4th line player, we still could possibly see a trade at the draft involving that pick.

    • You think it was the right decision though, no? Have to think the Sens will be better next year…

      • Everydayboots, oh yeah. Definitely the right decision to keep this year’s pick to either use or deal. They also have another (from Boston) at # 26.

All teams enter a new season optimistic and the Ottawa management, with a new coach and probably several new bodies, have to think they’ll finish higher in the standings than this past season – with the result that their pick next year could be anywhere from mid-pack to somewhere in the 20s. Giving that up will be easier to digest.

At least, they’d better hope they get it right and it turns out that way.

      • In the event Staios does not trade the pick, he’s on record as saying “As far as philosophy, there might be a time in the draft where you look positional. But certainly at the top of the board, we’re looking at best player (available).”

So, looking ahead at the draft consensus picks, and assuming players will rise and fall a few projected positions along the way, here are the picks ranked 5 to 10

        C Anton Silayev – Torpedo (KHL) 6′ 7″ – weight ?
        C Cayden Lindstrom – Med. Hat WHL 6′ 3″ 210
        C Berkly Catton Spokane WHL 5′ 10″ 170
LD Sam Dickinson London OHL 6’2” 200
        C Cole Eiserman USA U18 6′ 195
RD Zayne Parekh Saginaw OHL 6′ 179

      • George
if Staios does not trade the pick, he’s on record as saying “As far as philosophy, there might be a time in the draft where you look positional….
        and thats RD

players you listed, I added in an other RD…

C Anton Silayev – Torpedo (KHL) 6′ 7″ – is about 211lb… he will be (Gone top 5) he is a Chara!

        C Cayden Lindstrom – Med. Hat WHL 6′ 3″ 210
        (Hab’s will pick the Big Centre @ #5) …

        C Berkly Catton Spokane WHL 5′ 10″ 170
Sen’s Dont need a small centre, they have 3 centres❓

LD Sam Dickinson London OHL 6’2” 200
Sen’s Dont need an other LD/man now

LW, Cole Eiserman USA U18 6′ 195 A Big goal scorer, 58 Goals this year

Hopfully the Sen’s pick one of these 2 RD.

RD, Artyom Levshunov 6′ 2″/198 lb
looks like Levshunov could go before in the top 6….❓
RD, Zayne Parekh Saginaw OHL 6′ 179
is a Great offencive d/man & can also run the PP❓

    • Hey George! Flames really need to get their rebuild kick started & a few of us were brainstorming if a scenario of Markstrom(Alfredson of course convincing him to waive his NMC) & Andersen RHD for Korpisalo, Chychryn & that #7 OA.?

Some Flame fans like Vladar & think he will finally get his chance if we move Markstrom sharing the starts with Wolf & we have the cap space to extend Chyc if he fits. But that #7 is the prize for the Flames.
Andersen has 2 years left of roughly what Chyc has & makes pretty much the same money.

Is that a scenario that would work, again big if Markstrom waives to go to Ottawa?

      • You are significantly overvaluing markstrom

      • I have to agree there Chrisms … he hasn’t been the dominating tender he was while in Vancouver for some time now …. average best describes his game – to give up Chychrun AND the 7th pick just to shed Korpisalo they’d want better than Markstrom.

I’m more convinced than ever that they intend to go with Korpisalo while, with the new coaching staff and other acquisitions, concentrate on improving the overall defensive game as well as the pk (both of which were pitiful. Scoring they have, and to improve there what they need (and Norris) is better luck on the injury front.

If his chronic shoulder woes continue, the best they can expect from him is his $8 mil per on LTIR. They sure as Hell won’t find a taker.

In terms of goalies, if they go with Korpisalo as I suspect, they will try and find a veteran proven back-up somewhere – UFA heap? Trade?

  4. Wow the Oilers Blow a 4-1 Lead ❗️

The Oil were all over them, then they fell asleep half way through the 2nd period
Vancouver outshot the 19 to 7 in second & third.

The Oilers 2nd pairing LD man Mr $9.M man Daniel Nurse was Brutal Again….🙈
He was on for 3 of the 5 Vancouver Goals
Garland picked off a pass at centre ice and went one-on-one with Darnell Nurse & beat him to Score the winning Goal ⁉️
Nurse needs to get Traded out before July 1st

-Skinner had a very weak 3rd period
-McDavid had no shots on Goal in the game

Friday will be a difrent game and result…..

    • Not exactly a goaltending battle, was it?

      • Nope, sure wasn’t BCLeaf Fan. Skinner needs to be better, and I would bet he will be. So will the Oil’s attention to structure.

Tough loss, can’t blow a lead like that. We’ll see how resilient they are.

Garland’s goal wasn’t Nurse’s fault Willie, he closed the gap pretty quick and kept him to outside for a bad angle shot. Exactly what he was suppose to do. Skinner wiffed it.

      • Well, if nothing else, if they get a big lead again in this series the memory of what NOT to do or how to play should be fresh in their minds.

  5. Charlie McAvoy, must be injured he has been playing the worst hockey of his life. The number of times he is pushing the puck, skating over it, bad passes etc.

This game could’ve been different if Marchand doesn’t miss and empty net and Beecher put the rebound into the empty net. They didn’t and they lose.

Pastrnak fighting Tkachuk and all the scrums, 10 minutes misconducts. Out of them confused of why Maroon received a penalty and a misconduct. Both Maroon and Cousin got a 10 minute misconduct, neither should’ve. The ref trying to control the game and all they did was lose the game.

This league need to figure out what product they want on the ice.

For me play hard between the whistle, anything after the whistle an automatic penalty. Cross-check of any force and automatic penalty. Clean it up and lets play hockey.

  6. Last nights Boston & Florida Game was great,

loved it when Tkachuk was talking to his coach about fighting pasta
Pasta was asking his coach can i fight him and Montgomery said yes go ahead if you want to pasta had a big smile on his face….😂

looks like this one go’s to 7 games…..👌

  7. Bruins/Panthers …. I fir have a problem with Pasta and Tkachuk.. Pasta isn’t going to win the physical part of that … what I do have a problem with is Maroon engaging with Cousins who’s a nobody … Maroon who is the toughest guy playing in this series has to pick his spots better and should’ve had Tkachuk in his sites …Tkachuk according to past performances most of the time usually will stay away from players he can’t handle …

    • You want a goon to fight a superstar? Maroon is a vet and he did the right thing by fighting with Cousins.

  8. Hard for Maroon to fight a turtle

  9. not the biggest MatTkac fan (be different if on my team..) but he is not fighting the Bruins muscle either. Pasta fight fine. two stars dropping. one more aggressive than the other. Pasta is still a strong fella

  10. Keefe fired. Unjust, but about the only move the Leafs can make given the well documented NTCs the Fab 5 have.

    • LJ, yep.

      • I think the Leafs played a “waiting game” before sacking him to see if Ottawa blinked first – which they did with Green.

Had Staios not hired Green the other day, I’m sure the offer would have gone out to Keefe sometime today. He won’t stay unemployed long.

WHEN are they going to sack Shanahan? How many years do they intend to give him before they realize they don’t NEED someone like him constantly peeking over the shoulder of his GM and giving his approval (or denial? we may never know if that has happened in past years) to every frigging deal/move the GM deems necessary.

Let’s face it, unless you’re a fan content with having a good seasonal team, but a constant playoff disappointment, his “Shanaplan” is an utter failure after what? 9 years?

      • Keefe firing unjust, you guys don`t have a clue what you`re talking about. Experts that don`t really pay any attention. Keefe Dubas and Shanahan should`ve all been fired after the Montreal series. Keefe is under contract to Toronto for 2 more years. So, if Toronto didn`t want Keefe to coach Ottawa, all they had to do is not give Ottawa permission to talk to Keefe, end of story and yes teams do need to get permission even if the guys been fired

  11. I think Utah should name the team the Procrastinators since it’s going to take almost 2 years to get a name and jersey concept. Did they not have a plan when they bought the team? Not a good first look for the franchise given what they endured in Arizona.

    • You’re singing to the Choir, Snold.

  12. Did anyone catch sportsnet feed last night? it was funny if you noticed.

They kept panned the camera back to Keith Tkachuk, after his fight with Pastrnak.

As he was walking down the steps and giving the fans a thumbs up, his wife gets his attention and give him the no no wave with her winger. They pan away then go back. Gary Galley commenting that Matthews mom is on the phone it must be Brady, it’s a family affair.

What his doesn’t mention that Keith is sitting beside her his arms folded and not looking at his wife.

It’s funny because he looks like a child scorned by his mother.

    • Ya Caper, it’s like the mini-van commercial with Matt and Brady.

Plus he looks like he’s added about 70 lbs. Holy cow Keith, push the plate away a little sooner. Walk instead of ride next round?

I get it we all put on a few as we age, but he best do something about that. Not healthy.

      • Ray, sad to say he won’t be around long if he continue with his choices.

No issue with the Tkachuk’s and the car commercial is funny.

Matthew certainly picks his spots, i don’t think he misses one opportunity after the whistle to hand out a cross check to the kidneys.

      • Ray Bark Keith was inducted into the Blues hall of fame earlier this year and shared the stage with several previous inductees including Brett Hull and it was touch and go as to who was going to burst out of their shirt first. I think he may have dropped a few lbs since then but it could be he’s just wearing bigger clothes.
