Sunday NHL Rumor Roundup – June 16, 2024
A look at Daily Faceoff’s list of potential contract buyout candidates in the Sunday NHL Rumor Roundup.
DAILY FACEOFF: Frank Seravalli has Los Angeles Kings center Pierre-Luc Dubois atop his list of potential contract buyout candidates this summer.
Seravalli acknowledged Kings general manager Rob Blake indicating the club doesn’t plan on buying out the 25-year-old Dubois. However, he thinks it makes too much sense to do so if it can be done before the forward turns 26 on June 24. Until that date, they could buy him out at one-third of the remaining value over twice the remaining tenure of the contract. If he’s bought out at age 26 or older, it’s at two-thirds the remaining value.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The buyout period begins on June 15 or 48 hours following the completion of the Stanley Cup Final, whichever is later. The latest the current series runs is June 24.
Blake was firm when he said that Dubois wouldn’t be bought out. We’ve since seen or heard little indication he or his superiors will change their minds.
Seravalli’s other buyout candidates include Edmonton Oilers goaltender Jack Campbell, New York Rangers forward Barclay Goodrow, Ottawa Senators goalie Joonas Korpisalo, New York Islanders center Jean-Gabriel Pageau, St. Louis Blues defenseman Torey Krug, Philadelphia Flyers netminder Cal Petersen, Flyers winger Cam Atkinson, and Dallas Stars defenseman Ryan Suter.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Petersen and Atkinson are the most likely to be bought out. On June 7, Flyers general manager Daniel Briere said his club was examining its options, including buyouts for those two players.
Campbell was a free-agent bust for the Oilers. They’ve put their faith in Stuart Skinner as their starter this season, banishing Campbell to their AHL affiliate in Bakersfield. A buyout wouldn’t be out of the question, especially if they want to free up cash to re-sign restricted free agent Evan Bouchard this summer.
Goodrow is another possibility as the cap-strapped Rangers consider their options this summer. However, there could be a trade market for him given his playoff experience. Suter could also become a cost-cutting casualty.
The Islanders could prefer to trade Pageau rather than go the buyout route to free up salary. He popped up in trade rumors earlier this season.
The Senators are rumored to be shopping for an upgrade between the pipes. That could require clearing Korpisalo from their books.
Most reports out of Ottawa thus far suggest they could return with the tandem of Korpisalo and Anton Forsberg and hope they improve next season. Still, if there’s a chance to add someone like Calgary’s Jacob Markstrom or Boston’s Linus Ullmark, buying out Korpisalo could become a realistic option.
Krug used his no-trade clause last summer to reject a trade with the Flyers. He could become a buyout candidate if the Blues become desperate to create cap space for next season.
Serevali obviously just looked at those who are perceived to be “problems” to suggest buyouts without first checking the cap ramifications.
In Korpisalo’s case here’s the result from the Net -easy to check:
”
A check of the calculator on capfriendly.com says it will cost $10.6 million to buy out the $16 million in cash remaining on Korpisalo’s deal after this season. The bigger hit is the fact the buyout is spread over eight years and that’s a long time to carry that kind of money.”
He will NOT be bought out. He will be the starting goalie, augmented by a different, veteran back-up.
Gotta wonder when capfriendly goes dark, it’s going to be so much easier for these hacks to make their “insider” spews and spitballs.
Spotrac is a site similar to capfriendly
Oh no whatever will these hacks do????? Maybe use the other sites that do the exact same thing as cap friendly?
Oh no! Maybe you ought to read/understand what I posted rather than whatever you were trying to post there Randi
What about Nate Schmidt? $5,950,000 to be a healthy scratch? They should have at least attempted to extend Dillon with the plans of buying out Schmidt and/or Pionk ($5,875,000.)
Those two contracts, each with one year left, are killing the Jets.
Schmidt is better than the awful Pionk and only under contract for next season. Buyout Pionk and keep Schmidt until the trade deadline.
Just realized Pionk only has one year left too (thank God).
How would you like to be Minnesota? According to PuckPedia their buyout fee for Parise and Suter will be over 14 million dollars this year! Who was the GM for those deals?
If you’re referring to who signed them to those contracts, it was Chuck Fletcher. If you mean who bought them out, it was Bill Guerin.
Those buy-outs occurred in July 2021 and, with the team functioning at $14 mil less than just about every other team in terms of the cap, it’s interesting to look at the team’s results since then:
21-22 – 53 22 7 113 pts 310gf 253ga
22-23 – 46 25 11 103 pts 246gf 225ga
23-24 – 39 34 9 87 pts 251gf 263ga
I can think of about 8 teams off the top of my head that would give their eye teeth for 3 seasons like that – even the one just concluded, all things considered.
Both Parise and Suter contracts were 13 year deals, signed by Cliff Fletcher in July 2012. Last few contract years were for minimal salary ($2 M, $1 M, $1 M). Appears the GM expected a significant production drop-off. Had the buyouts occurred after year 11 and not year 9, the dead cap space wouldn’t have been so severe.
Rangers got exactly the type of play they expected from Goodrow when they signed him. Funny how he’s the type of player that fans complain we lacked vs Florida. A buyout would save them more than his cap hit but would be short sighted as cap hit rises to 1m next season and 3.5m the 3rd year. Then adds a 1.1m dead cap hit for 3 more seasons. After signing Kakko, they’ve got more than enough sign Schneider and Lindgren. That leaves 1 or 2 spots to fill. I don’t see making room for a big FA addition. Maybe Goodrow could be part of trade? Idk. Running it back with roster that was missing Chytil most of the year and still won Prez trophy might be Drury preference. Likely addressing needs at deadline. Chytil will either be back 100% or could end up ltir, adding 4.4m cap space
With the cap going up by 4.5 does the minimum salary also rise? And how much.
Yes, the cap minimum rises to $65 million. It was $61.7 million for 2023-24
Thanks Lyle, sorry I wasn’t clear, does the players minimum wage go up?
PLD buyout certainly a fair difference if bought out before June 24th:
Next 4 year’s Cap savings if bought out BEFORE June24th:
$6.9 M, $7M, $6M , $4.7 M
Next 4 years’ cap space if bought out ON or AFTER June 24th:
$5.7 M, $5.8 M, $4.8 M , $3.6 M
The earliest he can get bought out is late Thursday (June 20th) night (48 hours after the end of Tuesday’s game; and that’s IF Panther’s win)
An Oiler’s win on Tuesday means a Friday game , and then the Window (IF Panther’s win that Friday game) begins 48 hours AFTER that game….. meaning very late on the 23rd! The next day (24th) he’s 26 and the buyout is at 2/3rds.
Realistically at best in that example, 2 hour window for a 1/3rd buyout.
My guess then is Blake is cheering for a Panther’s win on Thursday
Of course you cheer against the team that beat you; but more specifically,Blake to cheer for a win by Panther’s Tuesday
Holl could be bought out or traded. My bet is a buy out
