NHL Rumor Mill – September 13, 2024
More speculation about possible trade destinations for Ducks defenseman Cam Fowler, and the latest on the Canucks’ goalie situation in today’s NHL Rumor Mill.
THE ATHLETIC: Eric Stephens reports Cam Fowler admits his tenure with the Anaheim Ducks is reaching a transitional stage that could lead to a trade.
The 32-year-old defenseman understands he’s in the second half of his career while his younger teammates are the ones who will push the team where it needs to be.

Fowler has a four-team trade list but Stephens reports he’s broadened the list to double-digits, opening up more options for trade discussions. He carries an average annual value of $6.5 million. With his contract down to two years, it could increase interest from other teams.
Trades at this time of the season rarely occur. The Ducks could begin this season with Fowler and see what suitors emerge during the season due to injuries or other issues.
Stephens suggested the Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs, Winnipeg Jets and Dallas Stars as possible destinations for Fowler.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Wings have the cap space but Stephens noted they’d like to move promising Simon Edvinsson into a full-time role. The Leafs would have to move one or two salaried players to Anaheim. Stephens suggested winger Nick Robertson, who requested a trade earlier this summer, as part of the return.
The Jets could be on Fowler’s no-trade list but Stephens wondered if he might be open to joining them as their contention window remains open. It would only be for two years.
Dallas could be an acceptable fit for Fowler. They have cap space now but that will shrink somewhat once Thomas Harley is signed. The Ducks might have to retain salary to make it work.
THE PROVINCE: Patrick Johnston noted the Vancouver Canucks have enough goaltenders to cover things off if starting Thatcher Demko isn’t available for preseason practices. The 28-year-old Vezina Trophy finalist’s health remains a concern following reports he’s still dealing with an undisclosed injury.
Johnston noted the Canucks have been considering adding a goalie on a professional tryout offer. They’ve approached Kevin Lankinen but the former Nashville Predators goalie wants more than a PTO.
Former Carolina Hurricanes netminder Antti Raanta was mentioned as an option but there’s no indication any deal has been made.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Demko’s status for preseason and the start of the regular season should become clearer following his training camp medical next week.
I think the Ducks keep Fowler at least until this years trade deadline . They have a few grade A young D that he surely can mentor ….And don’t call me Shirley
Ducks are already Fowl. Keeping Cam makes them Fowler.
Thank you. I’ll be here all night. Don’t forget to tip your waiter.
Hey SOG, as Lyle once told me, don’t give up your day job.
Is Fowler worth his Cap hit?
Can’t possibly see Leafs fitting him in
And he would be replacing OEL? Or pushing OEL to third pairing?
Can’t possibly see any of the other 3 locations suggested by Eric Stephens either.
Yeah, Detroit is sitting on cap space of $17,148,194 … but virtually all of that will be gone when their still-unsigned UFAs are finalized – Seider, Raymond and Berggren.
Winnipeg is shown with $5,776,309 in cap space, but they too have a significant unsigned RFA to deal with in Perfetti, who will take up most of that. Same with Dallas and their $6,243,759 in cap space with significant RFA Thomas Harley still to finalize.
If writers like Stephens are going to continue to toss out “likely destinations” for players like Fowler with hefty cap hits ($6.5 in his case), why don’t they speculate as to exactly how those destinations are going to handle it?
As you suggest, how could the Leafs fit him in without some massive contract movement of their own? As of this morning they sit $1,069,667 OVER the cap with 22 of 23, with suggestions that players such as Reaves or Timmins be waived to barely get within the max – leaving them 2 short of the 23 max. Who would need to be moved to make room for Fowler?
Speculations such as that tossed out by Stephens are totally ridiculous column-fillers without suggestions as to who they see being moved to make it work.
Can`t see Fowler being a fit in Toronto, especially with his cap hit and who would he push out on the left side, Reilly no, McCabe but not for that cap hit and you`re not trading for Fowler to play 3rd pair. There is a trade rumour between Anaheim and Toronto involving Robertson, but the object of Toronto`s interest is Gudas, who plays the right side and a lot tougher to play against. Which is more to what Toronto wants and needs.
Of course he is. Watch him play. A very good d man
@8787
Cam Fowler would fit in nicely in Pittsburgh and help our top 4 be solid.

Look 2 years left which is realistic penguins playoff window….
ACCARI PUUSTINEN GRAVES A PICK..
The NYI added a second p.t.o. this morning by signing 36 y/o LW Matt Martin to go along with 35 y/o G Keith Kinkaid.
That brings the total to 29 on p.t.o for 21 teams.
lol every year these lists of ptos, over cap under cap as if anybody here has a clue of GMs plans.
What we do know is they’ll all be cap compliant, we know some will jockey players up and down the minors, some will start the season with 21-22 men till they finalize.
We know some players will be waived, most will pass some will be snatched up as Montembeault was a few years ago right before training camp. That wasn’t on anybody’s radar
Won’t be long and we’ll know what the rosters will be.
