Penguins Sign Sidney Crosby To Two-Year Contract Extension
The Pittsburgh Penguins announced they re-signed captain Sidney Crosby to a two-year contract extension with an average annual value of $8.7 million.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Crosby, 37, is entering the final season of his 12-year, $104.4 million contract with the same AAV. TSN’s Chris Johnston reports the Penguins captain will end up playing 19 seasons of his NHL career earning that $8.7 million annual cap hit.
Crosby will earn a $9 million signing bonus in 2025-26 and a $6.53 million bonus for 2026-27.
There was speculation earlier this summer that Crosby’s next contract would be a three-year deal worth around $10 million. As with his previous contracts since coming off his entry-level deal in 2008, he’s left a lot of money on the table to give the Penguins the cap flexibility to build up other areas of their roster.
The Penguins aren’t overpaying an old veteran star well past his prime. Despite his age, Crosby remains among the NHL’s elite players. He tallied 42 goals and 52 assists for 94 points in 82 games last season on a Penguins squad considerably less talented than those he captained to three Stanley Cups, finishing 12th overall among the league’s leading scorers.
General manager Kyle Dubas expressed the gratitude of the Penguins’ front office. “Sid is making a tremendous personal sacrifice in an effort to help the Penguins win, both now and in the future, as he has done for his entire career.”
Crosby’s made plenty of other money through endorsements and other opportunities. Nevertheless, it’s rare for a generational player to consistently accept less than market value on his contracts.
It’s not all tied to his superstitious feelings about No. 87. He’s taken the term “team player” to a different level.
And, just like that, there goes 8787/Pengy’s conspiracy theories
OMG what’s 8787 going to do now,? I think I might regret saying that.
8 paragraph response from 8787 incoming…
The cap hit, as it has been, is tied to his birth date, I’ll bet he’s wishing he’d been born in October.
Hell, December! And for the last 4/5 years he’d have been worth every nickel.
As a Detroit fan, I really want to dislike Sid. I just can’t do it. He is showing the type of player he should ALWAYS be remembered as. Team first. Do whatever you can to help the team win a championship. If I had a kid with pro hockey aspirations, I’d point at Sid as an example. He will always have my respect.
The handwringing over Crosby needs to end, he’s clearly made up his mind that he wants to begin and end his career as a Penguin, which also means he’s accepted that he may never play another playoff game. Let the three year retirement tour begin now.
😍😍😍😍
The NHLPA should step in and raise the contract. Not one person even Peggy 8787 can argue that . Even Dubas said this is a team friendly deal.
We all agree this will never happen . But the PA should have a huge problem with him being so under paid for years and as lyle says still a top NHL player .
Sidney Crosby being underpaid should be of little consequence to the NHL PA. If Sid had been paid more during his career, then other Penguin players would have been paid less.
SIdney understands that the NHL Salary Cap is a Zero Sum shell game.
The owners will spend to the Cap.
The owners will spend to the Cap.
The owners will spend to the Cap.
So, with Crosby earning less than other players of his caliber, the Penguins have more Cap dollars to spend on the complementary pieces required to field a contender. If a player’s only concern is his ranking in the Highest Paid Player category, then maybe that player is also perfectly happy to enjoy extra vacation time in the spring while other members of his union are beating each other up in the quest to win Lord Stanley’s cup.
Last couple years of Bergeron,s career I think he took a million plus a few bonuses. Similar age to Sid it’s ok contract no steal in my opinion.
Well one was a very good player and the other is a super star. Not a good comparison.
Sid could never go anywhere after he brokered deals for Malkin and Letang and gave his blessings on the Karlsson trade! Wonder why he let his pal Guentzel walk away!
Sr, Guentzel was traded for Michael Bunting.
Jake signed for $9 M per season in Tampa whereas Bunting’s cap hit is only $4.5M.
IF Guentzel had re-signed with the Penguins, salary cap considerations would have necessitated the dumping of one or more players earning between $4M and $6M.
Pittsburgh wasn’t good enough to make the playoffs with Guentzel. So, how would keeping Jake and trading a top 6 forward make them more competitive next season, with some of their stars on the downslope of their careers (Malkin, Letang, Karlsson)?
Chrisms absolutely, and one finished his career playing in meaningful playoff games where the other one will be golfing early in the spring like the last 2 years!
Glad to see Sid signed it is well deserved and again he is underpaid..
I’m not saying the Penguins will win another Stanley cup with this group but they can and will make the playoffs again. They missed the playoffs the last two years by a total of 4 points.
1 point 2 years ago and 3 points last year.
If they missed by 10 12 points each year ok but everyone makes them out to be cellar dwellars…not a chance..
McGroarty 20 Beauvillier 27 Lizotte 26 Glass 25 all in their 20’s to refresh the bottom six.
Ponomarev 21and Koivynen 21 has been playing well in the developmental camp and now the prospects tournament in Buffalo. They have beat Ottawa’s prospects, Boston’s prospects, and Buffalos prospects mmmhhhh
And this 20 year old goalie Sergei Musharev who came out of no where from KHL holy jumping he is legit and will pass Joel Blomqvist another good Penguins goalie prospect.
Tristan Broz 22, 3 goals in 3 games at the tourney.
The bottom 6 will be younger, better and faster and if they get their heads out of their asses and have even a league average power play…they make the playoffs.
We shall see..I think Dubas deals Lars Eller before the season.
