NHL.COM: The Florida Panthers got a 27-save shutout from Sergei Bobrovsky to blank the Winnipeg Jets 5-0, handing the latter consecutive losses for the first time this season. Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov had a goal and two assists while Sam Reinhart collected three assists. Jets goalie Connor Hellebucyk stopped 26 of 31 shots.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Jets remain atop the overall standings (15-3-0, 30 points) but must take their game to another level against the defending Stanley Cup champions, who were well-prepared for this contest.

Tampa Bay Lightning netminder Andrei Vasilevskiy turned aside 29 shots in a 4-0 shutout of the New Jersey Devils. Victor Hedman and Anthony Cirelli each had a goal and an assist while Nikita Kucherov collected two assists to extend his points streak to seven games. Devils goalie Jacob Markstrom made 23 stops.

An overtime goal by Mitch Marner lifted the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 4-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers. Marner’s goal was the 200th of his career and he also collected an assist on one of Bobby McMann’s two goals. Oilers stars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl each had a goal and an assist.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Maple Leafs forward Ryan Reaves was ejected in the second period for a blindside hit to the head of Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse, who left the game and didn’t return. There was no postgame update regarding Nurse’s condition but it was reported he was aware and joking with the trainers.

Reaves apologized to Nurse in the Oilers dressing room during the third period but could face supplemental discipline from the league. During his NHL career, Reaves has received three suspensions totaling six games.

The Pittsburgh Penguins blew a 3-0 lead but defeated the San Jose Sharks 4-3 on Evgeni Malkin’s shootout goal. Penguins captain Sidney Crosby tallied his 599th career regular-season NHL goal. Tyler Toffoli sniped two of the Sharks’ three goals.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Penguins had three rookies in the lineup, including Owen Pickering, who made his NHL debut, collecting an assist for his first point in the big league. Meanwhile, Sharks goaltender Vitek Vanecek left this game in the first period with an undisclosed injury. There was no postgame update regarding his status. Defenseman Jake Walman returned to the Sharks lineup after missing the past five games, four due to injury.

Dallas Stars forward Mason Marchment tallied twice to nip the Minnesota Wild 2-1. Ilya Lyubushkin had two assists and Jake Oettinger made 22 saves as the Stars picked up their third straight victory. Kirill Kaprizov replied for the Wild while Filip Gustavsson kicked out 38 shots.

Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Spencer Martin made 24 saves for his first-ever NHL shutout in a 4-0 win over the Ottawa Senators. Jordan Martinook had a goal and an assist while Martin Necas picked up an assist to extend his points streak to 12 games. Senators netminder Anton Forsberg stopped 24 of 27 shots in a losing cause.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Hurricanes won without one of their top forwards. Winger Seth Jarvis was placed on injured reserve with an upper-body injury retroactive to Nov. 10.

The St. Louis Blues downed the Boston Bruins 3-2 on an overtime goal by captain Brayden Schenn. Radek Faksa collected a goal and an assist for the Blues as they snapped a four-game winless skid (0-3-1). Trent Frederic tallied both goals for the Bruins as they were outshot 31-17 in this contest.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Bruins center Mark Kastelic left this game with a lower-body injury. Teammate Tyler Johnson missed this game due to a family matter. The Bruins are 1-1-2 in their last four games.

A two-goal performance by Adrian Kempe powered the Los Angeles Kings over the Detroit Red Wings 4-1. It’s the second straight game Kempe has tallied two goals. Dylan Larkin scored for the Wings, who got a 37-save effort from goalie Cam Talbot.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Kings are 5-1-1 in their last seven home games. They activated forward Alex Turcotte off injured reserve for this game. Detroit defenseman Simon Edvinsson missed this game with a lower-body injury. The Wings have dropped four of their last five contests and sit uncomfortably close to the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings.

Vancouver Canucks goaltender Arturs Silovs turned aside 28 shots in his first game since Oct. 30 to defeat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1. J.T. Canucks center J.T. Miller led the way with a goal and an assist. Arvid Soderblom stopped 29 of 31 shots for the Blackhawks as they’ve dropped four of their last five games.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Blackhawks played without defenseman Seth Jones as he was placed on IR due to an injured right foot suffered during Thursday’s game against the Seattle Kraken. Blackhawks head coach Luke Richardson scratched struggling winger Taylor Hall from the lineup, citing his need for more practice after coming off a lengthy absence due to injury last season.

The Seattle Kraken picked up their fourth straight win as they defeated the New York Islanders 3-2 on a late goal by Jamie Oleksiak. Brandon Tanev and Yanni Gourde each collected two points for the Kraken while Pierre Engvall and Brock Nelson replied for the Islanders, who are 1-1-2 in their last four games.

Philadelphia Flyers forward Travis Konecny scored twice and added an assist in a 5-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres. Rookie winger Matvei Michkov collected two assists as the Flyers have won three straight. Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin had a goal and an assist.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Flyers rookie defenseman Emil Andrae left this game in the third period with an undisclosed injury. There was no postgame update about his status.

The Montreal Canadiens defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-1 on three unanswered third-period goals by Lucas Condotta, Jake Evans and Josh Anderson. Team captain Nick Suzuki scored what proved to be the game-winner while Cole Caufield picked up two assists. Dante Fabbro netted his first for the Blue Jackets after being claimed off waivers last week. The Jackets have only one win in their last eight games (1-6-1).

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Canadiens honored former captain Shea Weber in a pregame ceremony inducting him into the club’s Ring of Honour alongside their other Hall of Famers. They also played without defenseman David Savard due to an upper-body injury. His absence could be short-term as he participated in the morning skate and spoke with reporters afterward.

  1. For those saying “heh, two points is two points”

    WTF

We were up 3-0 on the 3rd worst team in the League; and let them come back to force OT; and almost win it!

It was great to see some “youngsters” in the line-up, but this team defensively remains impotent and the team as a whole completely uninspired and certainly not motivated to play a full 60.

Perhaps it is time for a coaching change. Gallant? Woodcroft? Boudreau? McLlelan?

For those who say this ownership doesn’t like to do that; they might not like to, but will be forced to. Empty seats motivate change.

    • Will you PLEASE come to grips with simple reality!

The Penguins – like it or not – have already embarked upon what will likely be a prolonged playoff drought as they head for their 3rd straight miss, joining the ranks of 9 others in varying stages of their own drought:

St. Louis – 2 headed for 3; Montreal – 3 headed for 4; Philadelphia, Columbus, Chicago, Utah 4 each and headed for 5; San Jose – 5 headed for 6; Anaheim – 6 headed for 7; Ottawa – 7 headed for 8; Detroit – 8 headed for 9; Buffalo – 13 probably headed for 14 (although they might change that this season).

With Pittsburgh, that’s over a 3rd of the league. So, what make you think Pittsburgh can break that pattern? Based upon their glorious past?

They certainly won’t do it through trades. They won’t deal Crosby, despite the fact he is the one player that a number of teams would do all in their power to acquire and, in doing so, provide Pittsburgh with several assets that would be heads and shoulders better than what they’d get for anyone else.

Without their approval they can’t deal any of Malkin, Rust, Karlsson, Letang, assuming they could even find ONE team they might agree to go to and who could possible afford their cap hits without moving a massive contract – or two – of their own.

They are severely limited in potential trade partners when it comes to Rakell, Hayes, Acciari (8 team no trade list), Bunting (10 team no trade list). Graves (12 team no trade list), Pettersson (8 team no trade list) and Jarry (12 team no trade list). Making a deal for one of them would be complicated enough – but several of them? Delusional. And what Pittsburgh received would hardly make any immediate difference – if at all if they’re mid to late-round picks.

      • “… joining the ranks of 11 others …”

      • George

        Your missing my point

Me (and almost all Pens fans) would be alright with a rebuild; and would have been alright with a rebuild had they started one in the summer of ‘23

What we are in right now is NOT a rebuild

It’s a fly by the seat of your pants process

Dubas made a promise to Crosby so that he would sign. He promised to make the team better. That’s not a rebuild, AND more importantly , he (Dubas) in no way has kept (at least to this point) his promise

Had Dubas done a rebuild from the get go; we (the Pens fans) would have been a year plus into it now; and behind it

In the summer of ‘23 he said he’s not rebuilding and promised to make the team younger, faster, bigger, tougher, better.

his moves were not good and did not match his promises

This past summer he stated again that they are not rebuilding and said they are positioning the team to be competitive THIS (24/25) year

The moves made by Dubas so far are absolutely anything but making the team more competitive.

As at now the team is imploding and absolutely wrecking the twilight careers of two first ballot Hall of Famers and one other HoFer

He should have been honest with fans and Crosby

If Crosby had been told the truth ; perhaps he decides he wants to play 25/26 & 26/27 with MacKinnon

      • Actually, YOU’RE the one missing the point. Dubas may be questionable as a viable GM … but he isn’t an idiot … don’t think it hasn’t dawned on him that the moves he DID make are not working out as he intended. He KNOWS now beyond doubt that he’s in the early stages of a re-build.

The problem is, his ONLY viable trade commodity that would bring back top quality assets is Crosby – but let’s face it, he’s going nowhere.

Then you come to the likes of Malkin, Rust, Karlsson and Letang who aren’t going anywhere either unless they wave their restricting clauses – which narrows the field down considerably. And even then the likelihood of finding even ONE location
where each might agree to go, come up with one that could take on their cap hits (and term in some cases) without finding a taker for whoever they’d want to ship out to free up the necessary cap space. It might well happen eventually in a couple of cases – but not any time soon.

If he’s considering starting with Rakell, Hayes, Acciari, Bunting, Graves, Pettersson and/or Jarry, his problems don’t get any easier since each has a modified no trade list of varying length, as noted above, and you can bet those lists includes teams currently in their own re-build phase or Canada-based teams. And again, with most if not all teams to which they COULD be dealt likely smack up against the cap, that requires them to make cap-clearing space.

And what’s the point of dealing the existing ELCs in their system or the rights to their pending RFAs, since not one among them is opening any eyes.

This is why I say they are headed for a prolonged playoff drought, likely with a buy-out or two in the future, minor deals, astute draft picks, and slow but steady contract attrition for those they cannot find takers (Malkin, Bunting, Hayes, Acciari, Lizotte – all in 2026-27 and Beauvillier, O’Connor, Nieto, Puljujarvi next year.

  2. Yesterday watched the Bruins & Blues Game,

    Boston
need a first line LW…Morgan Geekie is just Not the guy…🙈 Boston have the same problem as last year the can’t score when they need to
today Joonas Korpisalo was in Net and he is Very Inconsistant

if the Preds start to trade…and i think they will after the 25 to 35 game mark….
They are going to look for a Very good top young prospect
The Bruins should go after Jonathan Marchessault.. he is a true 1st line LW gets about 28 to 30 goals a year and good for 65 point a season❓

  3. 8787 I feel your pain! Have been watching the Boston Bruins play uninspired hockey all year! They go stretches with not even getting a shot on net! Their power play is equally as inept! Hockey people say the big date or point of no return is Nov. 28, the US thanksgiving about 20-25 games! If so,the next 2 weeks should decide a lot!

    • Our pain is cutting deep.

I have fair confidence in Bruins being in the playoffs.

They can and will turn it around

At least you have a coach that sits players for shoddy and/or inept and/or apathetic playing.

Pens fans all know that our point of no return was June 1st, 2023.

Too painful to mention what happened that day

You just need to google “june 1st 2023 penguins” for the explanation of this accelerated movement towards Dante’s (Penguins’ ) Inferno

      • 8787 How about changing your team colors back to dark blue, light blue and white to usher in your new Penguin regime, post Crosby!

      • Sr

If it turns things around we’ll wear a tie dye jersey

  4. Reaves should be held to the Trouba standard, keep your head up when I’m on the ice because it’s fair game.

The league has to decide if it wants head shots to be illegal or not.

    • Agree! Tanner Jeannot scored the winning goal for the Kings while Brock Boeser is still sidelined with a concussion. Maybe 5+ games should be the starting penalty for head shots.

    • Trouba has only cashed in 9 of his 10 “Get out of Jail Free “ cards. Still one left, so beware

These blatant and purposeful head shots have to stop

      5 games minimum deserved

But wait, George Parros is making the decisions.

So it’s “pinky swear not to do it again Mr. Reaves”

      “Oki doki, I pinky swear”

Then they both wink and high five

      Lunch is on Reaves

    • I agree regarding knowing who’s on the ice and keeping you head up accordingly. I don’t think either players are dirty but both will pop you if you’re caught with your head down.

That Reeves hit was something we saw often in games past…I remember at least two times Clark would pop a player circling the net with their heads down or Stevens doing the same.

I wonder if the league wants hitting in the game at all. Reeves hit was not a clean hit but one that happens with trying to deliver a big hit – accidental or unintentional contact to the head. We don’t need to debate intention but rather have clear lines as to if you want to blow a guy up, you have to go in knowing if you do it wrong by making head contact, the price you and you team will pay will be great.

      • Don’t we now have clear lines: an illegal check is when the principle point of contact is the head, intentional or not.

What we don’t have are clear and consistent calls from the so called Player Safety Department.

      • Which made it virtually impossible for someone like Chara to deliver a check on anyone under 6′ 2″ without someone interpreting it as “targeting the head.”

      • Don’t agree, George. Being particularly tall is like any other type of build: one has to learn to play within the rules while bodychecking. What’s the difference between 6′ 9″ Chara hitting Brady at 6/4″ and Brady hitting Newhook at 5’11? We don’t have rules against size differential contact.

Particularly tall players can target the shoulder, throw a hip check, or – with care around the boards – check a player from behind. Just like everyone else.

      • Lj how do you learn not to be 6″9″, if you`re Chara. This I`d love to hear explained. I`ve seen Chara and other tall/big players get penalties and suspensions because of their size. If Chara bends to hit another player it`s called clipping and it`s a penalty. The rules were written years ago when guys like Chara didn`t play, heck most of the players were under 6′. George is right almost impossible for a guy like Chara not to make head contact when the guy he`s hitting 6″ shorter than him. I`d love to hear you explain how Chara should throw a check without hitting an opponents head

      • I just did, cogently, Yogi. I can’t explain it any clearer, and I’m not going to try and put it a different way.

I enjoy a good exchange but for me there has to be merit it it. Frankly, arguments based on the statement that bigger players get penalized because of their size, or that a hit from behind by a bigger player is of itself clipping are absurd and I have no interest in pursuing them.

I’d rather do yard work, which I will now do.

      • @ Yogi, I don’t think you have seen that … you have seen Chara get penalties for illegal checks. And given the acknowledged athleticism of the example, suggesting he could not control his body is not very plausible. He is allegedly not only very fit, but very coordinated as evinced by his NHL playing career.

Debrincat is listed at 5’ 8” on TSN. Add six inches and any player at 6’2” has his shoulder in Debrincat’s face.

      • Chara knew how to stop opponents without giving a headshot, Brendan Gallagher had many run-ins with Chara without a headshot so the size issue is moot.

Lots of plays that were deemed legal have been taken out of the game and headshots remain a gray zone, no wonder players take advantage of it.

Blame the player for lack of awareness, admiring his pass, lowering or raising his head and its all bs because the blame lies with the guy targeting the hit be it deliberate or not.

      • @Shaun you have no clue to what I`ve seen or anybody else for that fact or if you think that you`re clairvoyant and know what others see or think then, shaun, what am I thinking right now

      • @ Yogi, you are very touchy. And your interpretation is about as acute as your reading skills.

  5. when is Yzerman going to realize that Lalonde isn’t the right guy to lead the Wings? Yzerman brought in more talented players this year yet the same results. just ain’t working with the current coaching staff

    • IDTS, Y did not fix the D, he had the Walman debacle and bringing in Gus for Ghost was making a bad defense much worse. And all the offence that was lost during the summer was replaced with players with half that goal scoring ability. This team as constructed and the way they are playing should be able to secure a top 5 lottery pick!

    • Penguins owners propose an Yzerman/Lalonde swap for Dubas/Sullivan

      • Be careful what you wish for— you may get it!

And that is – 8 years of making the wrong decisions – 5 of them under Yzerman – and wandering in the wilderness, headed for 9.

      • One has to wonder if there is undue attachment to Yzerman by Illich. Must be harder to let a GM or coach go who was once your team’s superstar.

      • Sully for Lalonde and a 2026 2nd!

      • George

Re “Be careful what you wish for— you may get it!”

        Iam wishing for it

Dubas screwed up Leafs with Cap mismanagement having 4 Forwards eating 1/2 the Cap

        Now he’s screwing up Pens

        No rebuild when warranted

Promising to make team better NOW and immediately competitive while literally doing the opposite

I’d take Yzerman as GM over Dubas, EVERY single day

      • Johnny Z

The 2nd is a kind offer as an extra, thank you

Just get the Lalonde for Sully trade done; sundries exchanged to balance the offer are not as important

Both men will benefit from a change of scenery

Both teams (and therefore both cities and both sets of fans) will benefit from a change in coaching

    • I have had much to say about the Red Wings this season, and none of it is very nice.

    • mikeP, Ottawa has spent the better part of the last 7 seasons bringing in “more talented players” and, despite 3 different coaching regimes, they’re still spinning their wheels.

      • And the latest in a long list of Ottawa phenomenons is the penchant for giving up goals in the final seconds or early seconds of periods.

Last night, with 42 seconds left in the 2nd, they go down 2-0. And just to make sure the coffin was securely locked, they then gave up the 3-0 goal 32 seconds into the 3rd.

        And it keeps happening.

    • Hey Mike, Re Wings

I think Detroit is still in the Re-building – Re tooling stage….they have No Real Supper star up front…

But on d they have these two d/men & Goaltender who will be Very good in 21 yr old G,
      Sebastian Cossa.
      3 young d/men
      -23 yr old Moritz Seider
      -21 yr old Simon Edvinsson
-22 yr old William Wallinder coming up from AHL next yr,

They really need to go after a Top Forward Centre in the 2025 NHL draft, they look right now like bottom 5-6 team for the next couple of years…….🤔

  6. Re, Oil & Leafs Game

Ryan Reaves Head shot frrom behind on Nurse

Deserved to be ejected in the second period for a blindside hit to the head of Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse,
He should get Minimum 5 Games for that⁉️
    the guy is a Thug

Oiler seme to have a hard time locking it down in the final 5 minute of games when they are winning
Skinner let in a soft one in to😩

    • Dirty player with a dirty hit on another dirty player.

    • Skinner let in a soft goal, which one was soft? You watch 30 seconds worth of highlights and pass judgement. Skinner couldn`t be faulted on any of the 4 goals. If you would`ve watched even a few minutes of the game, you would`ve directed the blame on the Oilers terrible defensive zone coverage or maybe McDavid who was on the ice for all 4 goals against

  7. Toronto 5-1 without Matthews this year, 40-20-2 lifetime without him. Not saying Matthews isn`t a great player or worth is paycheck. But you have to wonder about a teams approach to the game when their star player is missing and think why can`t they play like this with Matthews in the lineup. They play with more intensity and they take what`s there instead of trying to create something out of nothing. With Matthews in the lineup it`s more wide open, more high risk. They need to meet somewhere in the middle. And yes, Reaves deserves a suspension for the hit

    • Yogi the power play is also been great without Matthews. Does he not get in on the top unit when he returns?

Both Marner and Nylander seem to be able to carry their line…maybe the solution is simply have all three carry their own lines and since Berube said he “likes his pairs” it should be easier to mix and match without relying on pairing Marner or Nylander with Matthews…I don’t see why each can’t play and lead their own lines. That’s what I can gather from all this.

  8. It`s not a question of who plays Ron, they seem to complicate things when Matthews is there. They need to take what`s there. If Matthews is open you give him the puck, if he`s not they need to take what`s there. They make 10 passes trying to get him the puck at times, like nobody else is allowed to score. They need those ugly goals. You`ll find that when you score those ugly one`s down low, Matthews get get open far more often. You`re right Ron they should be able to drive their own line, but will they.

  9. Wow the speed at which the NHL tried, convicted and hung Reaves was astonishing. While a match penalty comes with an automatic suspension and probably was going to get the max 5 games, to which he deserved. I`m just amazed how fast the NHL got it done. I wonder why they waste the time spent on the phone call

    • It’s not a surprise, Yogi, Reaves has a prior history.

      • A lot of other players have had even lenghtier records and not had such a rush job done by the NHL. Reaves deserved the suspension no question about that. I actually thought he`d get an in person meeting for the hit

      • Yogi, you claim that “A lot of other players have had even lenghtier records and not had such a rush job done by the NHL.”

        Like who?
