Avalanche Trade Alexandar Georgiev To Sharks For Mackenzie Blackwood

The Colorado Avalanche traded goaltender Alexandar Georgiev, forward Nikolai Kovalenko, a 2026 second-round pick, and a fifth-rounder in 2025 to the San Jose Sharks for goalie Mackenzie Blackwood, forward Givani Smith, and a 2027 fifth-round pick.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Avalanche agreed to retain 14 percent of Georgiev’s $3.4 million cap hit. He’s in the final season of a three-year contract.

This is the second trade the Avalanche have made in just over a week involving goaltenders. On Nov. 30, they shipped Justus Annunen to the Nashville Predators for Scott Wedgewood.

Georgiev’s inconsistency prompted this move. His .872 save percentage and 3.38 goals-against average were among the worst for goalies with at least 15 games played this season. The Avalanche are clinging to a wild-card berth in the Western Conference and need a more reliable starter between the pipes. Rumors had linked them to Blackwood since last season.

Blackwood resurrected his career with the rebuilding Sharks after several injury-shortened seasons with the New Jersey Devils. The 28-year-old netminder has a 3.00 goals-against average and a .911 save percentage this season. He’s in the final season of a two-year deal with an AAV of $2.35 million.

  1. I felt very strongly that this is the trade the Avs would make, picking up Blackwood. I’ll have to check in on Kovelanko to see his worth, but I’m surprised the Sharks gave up a first rounder, especially as they had to take on the contract of Georgiev. Like to hear what some others think of this trade.

    • Good trade for both teams👍 as both Goaltenders are UFA’s at the end of the season….

Avalanche Trade Alexandar Georgiev To Sharks For Mackenzie Blackwood he will be better for the avs and the playoff Run….?
Sharks get a 2nd pick to help build up there prospect pool and a young 25yr old RW Nikolai Kovalenko who has 8 points in 28 games with the AVs…..

Sharks can pick up a 2 or 3 2nd picks and a few 3rd picks for there 6 UFA players.👍

They can also get a 1st pick for Mikael Granlund
who is HOT again this year 30 points in only
      28 games……. 😲✅

  2. That should be a fifth round pick that the Avs got in the trade. I felt strongly that this was a trade the Avs would make, getting Blackwood. And as Georgiev is a UFA at the end of the season, the draft capital the Sharks acquired in the deal will be nice. Just hope it doesn’t bum the team out losing their main guy in net when they’ve been doing better. Will be interesting to see if Kovalenko does better with more ice time on the Sharks.

  3. I thought it would have been Gibson in a similar deal . Good trade for all. Askarov is the future and countryman Georgiev can maybe help as a back up .. I thought Blackwood deserved some 4 Nation consideration .sees a lot of rubber. Let’s see him on a good team. Kudos for the Avs for not waiting like New Jersey last year that was way too late
