Are the Maple Leafs attempting to acquire Rasmus Andersson from the Calgary Flames? Read on for the latest in today’s NHL Rumor Mill.

ARE THE MAPLE LEAFS PURSUING RASMUS ANDERSSON?

THE LEAFS NATION: Jay Rosehill recently told host Nick Alberga that a league source claimed the Toronto Maple Leafs are trying to acquire defenseman Rasmus Andersson from the Calgary Flames.

Calgary Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson (NHL Images).

Andersson, 29, is in the final season of his contract and eligible for unrestricted free-agent status next July. He carries an average annual value of $4.55 million and a six-team no-trade list.

Rosehill believes the only way the Maple Leafs acquire Andersson is if they can sign him to a contract extension. He also questioned whether they had sufficient tradeable assets to make this deal.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: According to Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun, the two Leafs that other clubs covet the most are winger Matthew Knies and promising forward Easton Cowan. He believes those two must be kept to ensure the Leafs have substance for the future. He also questioned whether success would follow such a significant acquisition.

Unless the Leafs are willing to part with Knies or Cowan, I don’t see them outbidding other clubs for Andersson. They’d be foolish to make that trade. Koshan’s right, they must retain what few young assets they have.

  1. Toronto is searching for a spark. The other night they looked bored, lost and not interested in their game with a very average Boston team. And when Minten scored Boston s last goal that was the icing on the cake. Berube looks like he s searching for answers, that just may not be there.

    • maybe Nylander couldn’t be counted on to replace Marner’s offensive production. Trade him in a blockbuster deal for a top line forward who could setup Matthews, who is missing that playmaker

      • Willy to Calgary for Andersson and Naz

      • Nylander is carrying the Leafs with 25 points in 15 games..its the same old Toronto of this era issue… top heavy with a pieced together D core.
The dropoff from Willy Auston JT and Knies is massive…and its Nick Robertson on the stat sheet

      • You’re going to need Nylander. Matthews has been damaged goods for a good part of his career. He’s nearing 30 now.

      • I’d be thinking more along the lines of Mathews in the blockbuster

I’ve got your blockbuster. If you can get him to sign an extension and waive nmc. Perfect replacement for Marner: Artemi Panarin! Will pile up points, get you to playoffs and maybe Leafs win a round.
        To Ny: M Reilly (20% retained),N Robertson, 2028 1st
To Leafs: Panarin and Soucy (both (50% retained) Othmann

  2. You can’t make that trade if you’re Toronto. I feel like they have peaked and are now feeling the effects of trading away prospects and pics for the last few years. They look slow and there’s no depth to the team up front or on D. I don’t think you can blow it up, but they are in trouble, especially on the back end. They have very few puck movers to help them get up in transition. Andersson could help, but they don’t have the trade capital to get him.

  3. Anderson to Leafs would be only if it is the best offer which I doubt and only if the only offer . Slim to none and slim just left town
Berube doesn’t make it to season’s end is my prediction .
Standings won’t change a lot by the end of Nov.

  4. Jay Rosehill (a former enforcer, ie nobody) was told by a league source …

Could any source be more vague, or less plausible? Bettman? The arena washroom attendant? Once again we have a supposed pundit desperate for attention.

Yes, this falls under the category of Rumours. But can’t this section be Credible Rumours?

  5. Making a trade won’t help. Right now the whole team sucks. The other teams skate up the middle of the ice with ease. The defence are 20’ inside their own blue line. The forecheck is not. Two passes and the opposition is out of their zone, untouched.
Too fancy, which is surprising as Bérubé is the coach.
Dump it in from the red line. Hit everything. Throw everything at the net, even some bodies.
    Cheers!

  6. Tre should be fired his massive overpayment at last year’s trade deadline was a firing offence.

He was brutal in Calgary and now in Toronto when will the insanity stop??
Giving away your future like 5 years straight for old guys that are about to expire makes no sense.
Knies for Anderson would be another brutal trade.
I feel sorry for all leafs fans having to put up with this kind of incompetence.

  7. Leafs should target som reclamation players like Vancouver did with Reichel, sure it didnt work great but he only cost a 4th rounder. Find some of those and hope one out of three works and gives you a middle six player.
    And
Vancouver should give Reichel a chance on the wing instead where he has mostly played, the C testing should stop

    • Kent – isnt that exactly what they did in bringing in Maccelli?

    • To Kent Nilsson,

How about a reclamation project like Steven Stamkos? He’s been brutal in Nashville this season and he must be dying to get out of there. The fit is there if the Leafs take it: a veteran player who can still score on a good team, a Toronto native who could say yes to a Leafs trade if he was asked, and he is good friends with John Tavares. So I would look into that soon.
