Check out the latest on Predators forward Steven Stamkos, Canucks defenseman Tyler Myers, Panthers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, and more in today’s NHL Rumor Mill.

STEVEN STAMKOS PROVIDES PREDATORS WITH A LIST OF TRADE DESTINATIONS

TSN: Pierre LeBrun reports Nashville Predators forward Steven Stamkos has provided the team with a list of trade destinations.

Stamkos has two years remaining on his contract and carries a full no-movement clause. LeBrun said that the 34-year-old forward is happy in Nashville and isn’t asking to be traded. This is a preparatory move in case Predators management approaches him about a trade.

The list is topped by Stamkos’ former club, the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Dallas Stars and Minnesota Wild are also believed to be on it. LeBrun also believes the New Jersey Devils could be there, as they attempted to sign Stamkos two years ago.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Stamkos recently said he’s not sweating the upcoming trade deadline because of his no-movement clause. The possibility of a trade seems unlikely at this point.

RED WINGS REPORTEDLY MAKE A TRADE OFFER FOR TYLER MYERS

TSN: Darren Dreger reported yesterday that the Vancouver Canucks received a trade offer from the Detroit Red Wings for Tyler Myers. That’s why they held the 36-year-old defenseman out of the lineup for Wednesday’s game against the Winnipeg Jets.

Myers is signed through next season with an average annual value of $3 million. He also carries a full no-movement clause for this season. The blueliner and his agent were reportedly deliberating their next move.

Dreger indicated other clubs, such as the Dallas Stars, are believed to be interested in Myers.

Chris Johnston reported Myers had not yet signed off on the deal. It remains to be seen how this plays out between now and the March 6 trade deadline. The blueliner wants time to decide where he wants to play.

Speaking of the Canucks, Dreger noted that forwards Brock Boeser, Jake DeBrusk, and Elias Pettersson have been mentioned in the rumor mill. However, he believes Evander Kane remains the most likely of their forwards to be moved.

THE PROVINCE: Ben Kuzma believes the Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche would also be interested in Myers.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Myers had intended to finish his career in Vancouver. He and his family love the city and are well-established in the community. He probably wants to take their needs into account. We’ll find out soon enough what Myers intends to do.

WILL THE PANTHERS BECOME SELLERS AT THE TRADE DEADLINE?

TSN: Pierre LeBrun believes the Florida Panthers’ remaining games leading up to next Friday’s trade deadline will determine if they become buyers or sellers.

LeBrun noted that goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky is among their players eligible for unrestricted free-agent status on July 1. He pointed out that ESPN’s Kevin Weekes indicated that the 37-year-old goaltender has not been signed to an extension, and wondered if he could be traded. LeBrun thinks he could be moved if the Panthers become sellers.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Bobrovsky carries a salary-cap hit of $10 million, but he’s earning $5 million in actual salary this season. He has a 16-team no-trade list.

It will be interesting to see how things unfold for the Panthers in the coming days. Trading Bobrovsky would be a bold move, and it could send them into the offseason trade and free-agent markets for a suitable replacement.

THE LATEST ON MAPLE LEAFS FORWARDS BOBBY MCMANN AND SCOTT LAUGHTON

TSN: Chris Johnston believes the Toronto Maple Leafs will move forwards Bobby McMann and Scott Laughton if they haven’t signed contract extensions by the trade deadline.

Both players are eligible to become unrestricted free agents by July 1. The Leafs aren’t going to carry them to free agency in a season that appears to be heading in the wrong direction.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: McMann and Laughton have indicated they want to remain with the Leafs. However, that’ll only happen if they’re willing to accept less than market value, which for both players could be around $5 million annually on long-term contracts.

OILERS INTERESTED IN FAULK OR EKMAN-LARSSON?

NHL insider Frank Seravalli believes the Edmonton Oilers could be paying close attention to St. Louis Blues defenseman Justin Faulk and Toronto Maple Leafs blueliner Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

Both play right-side defense, something the Oilers are trying to address before the trade deadline. However, they’ll have to move Andrew Mangiapane first to clear sufficient cap space.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Oilers are pressed against the salary cap. Mangiapane carries an average annual value of $3.6 million through next season with a full no-trade clause, but he’s believed to be willing to waive it to join a team where he’ll get more playing time.

Faulk’s AAV is $6.5 million through 2026-27 with a 15-team no-trade list, while Ekman-Larsson’s is $3 million through 2027-28 with a 16-team no-trade list. By moving Mangiapane, they would have more than enough for Ekman-Larsson, and should have enough to take on the remainder of Faulk’s salary for this season.

However, the Oilers have limited trade assets. The Blues have reportedly set a high asking price for Faulk, and the Maple Leafs could seek a first-round pick or a top prospect for Ekman-Larsson.

THE SHARKS COULD FLIP KIEFER SHERWOOD

THE ATHLETIC: Pierre LeBrun reports a source informed him that the San Jose Sharks are open to trading Kiefer Sherwood if he hasn’t signed a contract extension by March 6.

The Sharks acquired the 30-year-old winger from the Vancouver Canucks last month. Given his $1.5 million cap hit, he could draw plenty of interest in the trade market.

LeBrun believes Sherwood would like to stay with the Sharks. However, it’s more likely than not that he gets moved by the trade deadline if he’s not re-signed by then.

  2. Following the Oilers propsects this season, i think cagey GMs will recognize a bit more capital than the casual fan may think they have.

Oilers still find themselves ins a precarious position both being in a win now mode but also knowing they need to begin to look 2 or 3 years out as well. So unless the return is someone that fits that model, id be hesitant to move these out for a strict rental…but..

Howard, Savoie both look like long term tip 6/top 9 wingers. Savoie is looking to be a pk specialist as well.

Akey has found his game in the AHL and is getting praise. Marjala was recently highlighted as a top 10 ahl prospect. Then guys like Hutson and even Jarventile have showed well enough to be given NHL roster shots. On top of that they have 2 goalie prospects showing well with Ungar having a remarkable season. Not to mention Olympian Josh Samanski currently on the main roster.

I am not saying these guys are stars in the making and not all will even turn into nhl players. And I know clubs have their own bundle of bubbling prospects but the one thing Bowman has done well is seemingly inject youth and restock from a bare cupboard last summer.

So a long winded to say that the Oilers have a few more cards in their hands than some may think. Whether It makes sense to have much or any in play or if they garner any true attention…well time will tell.

None of that truly help their cap situation at the deadline. Maybe Mangiapane’s multi point game has a gm excited lol

  3. Looking back, if only Edmonton had taken care of business and signed Holloway and Broberg, their defence and secondary scoring would be much better. St. Louis signed them both for $6.6 million.

    • Yep, instead they signed Arvidsson and Jeff Skinner, who are both now gone.

    • Yes and no Gored1970.

If they had retained Broberg they would unlikely have been able to acquire Walman. So my take is that swap em, the defense is more less the same. I would even state that long term Broberg is likely to evolve into the better dman if not already but the different isnt so vast over the past 2 seasons. Plus broberg asked for trades out on 2 occasions I think. Another added wrinkle

As for Holloway, he looked to be somewhat injury prone in his edm stint..hand injury in his first pro season then missing some games as an oiler and that continues in stl as well.

Assets should have been managed better 100% and I would have preferred them retained at a lower cost but had they matched would they be in better shape today?…I figure they’d be in more or less the same position

  4. If Myers is acquired, the Wings should demote both Chiarot and ASP to the 3rd pairing and promote Johannsson to the 2nd pair with Myers.
Chiarot would still be a main PK guy and ASP would still QB the 2PP.
This trade is about sheltering ASP.

    • It’s a very low risk move for Yzerman, to add a guy like Myers…and agreed…this is about ASP looking a bit lost on defense when he isn’t on the PP.

I can’t imagine that the Canucks are asking much more than a 2nd or 3rd round pick for Myers at this point in his career.

  5. I live on the west coast of Canada so by default I have followed the Canucks for a few decades, but I wouldn’t say I’m a fan. I am more of a fan of certain players rather than teams.

For fantasy reasons, I have been following the Buffalo Sabres for a couple years and boy do they need an upgrade on their powerplay.

Given those two facts, you can probably understand when I say that Buffalo should trade some of their youth of which they have too much for Jake DeBrusk. He would really help them out a lot imho. That guy just has a knack for the puck on the man advantage.

Just my 2 cents, and you mightn’t even get your money’s worth. 😉

    • I would propose something like:

To Buffalo: Jake Debrusk + 4th Round pick
To Vancouver: Jack Quinn + 2nd Round pick

      Reply
      • I dont think that works for Buffalo. Quinn is just really starting to look comfortable now in what his 3rd season. I would not swap him for debrusk. Quinn Is Cheaper, younger and having the better season.

      • I can see your point, 1Oilerfan. I really just pulled a young guy name that I knew off of the Sabre’s current lineup. Sub in Rosen, Kulich, Helenius, Ostlund, Krebs, etc for Quinn. Buffalo has a LOT of young fwd depth – and they all can’t be top 6 players for the Sabres. Krebs is playing well at the moment but I don’t think he is a top line winger either which is where he is deployed at the moment.

DeBrusk has 11 PP goals this season and has produced effectively on the PP for multiple years now.

Ultimately I guess I am saying that those two GMs should be talking as Buffalo needs help on the PP and Vancouver needs prospects. DeBrusk will not be part of the rebuild and would have some value as the PP becomes even more crucial in the playoffs.

  6. With all the BB games and condensed schedule, the teams with the best goalie tandems should fare well. Surprised that no one has pulled the trigger on trades yet.

  7. Bobrovsky looked pretty good last night. I am surprised the Panthers have not resigned him, especially since they do not have a ready replacement.

    • They had one in Brandon Bussi and frittered him away via waivers. Carolina certainly recognized his potential, while a lot of teams in the pecking order at the time before it got to Carolina – several of which needed then … and still do … an infusion of goalie talent as much as did Florida, but were as blind as Zito.

      • Let’s not forget Spencer Knight. Florida is in cap hell and who knows how much Bob is looking to make next year and how many years does he have left. Can see him joining his buddy Panarin in LA should he be leaving Fl

  8. 1/2 priced Bob and Petry to the Oil for Jarry, Savoie, and a 2nd that turns to a 1st if they get to WCF.
