Check out the latest on the Devils, Oilers, and Sabres in the Sunday NHL Rumor Roundup.

DEVILS COULD SHAKE UP THEIR ROSTER BEFORE THE MARCH 6 TRADE DEADLINE

RG.ORG: James Murphy reports a source claiming the New Jersey Devils are looking for a “hockey trade” to shake up their roster and “send a message” to their dressing room following the Olympic roster freeze.

According to Murphy, multiple teams have inquired about Devils forward Dawson Mercer. They’re not actively shopping him, but he does have value, especially with term remaining on his contract.

Dougie Hamilton could be available again. It was reported that the Devils were shopping the veteran defenseman, with the Toronto Maple Leafs believed to be among the suitors.

The Devils apparently pulled Hamilton from the trade market after defenseman Luke Hughes was placed on long-term injury reserve on Jan. 21. However, it’s believed they could be willing to move him again. Murphy observed that the Devils have a projected $7.6 million in trade deadline cap space.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Murphy also noted the Devils acquired center Nick Bjugstad from the St. Louis Blues before the Olympic trade freeze. While most observers (including yours truly) saw this as the first of what could be multiple moves by the Blues, it also signaled that the Devils could have other moves in store to try and save their season.

The Devils are second-last in the Eastern Conference, nine points out of the final wildcard berth. They’ll have to go on a tear down the stretch to have any chance of climbing back into the postseason chase.

Hamilton and Mercer have frequently surfaced in trade rumors since last summer. General manager Tom Fitzgerald has to be feeling the heat as his club flounders in the standings. If he makes changes, he’ll be seeking players who can help his team immediately and beyond this season.

OILERS BELIEVED TO BE SEEKING A DEFENSEMAN

EDMONTON JOURNAL: David Staples reported Oilers insider Bob Stauffer said the club no longer seeks a top-nine forward, but instead is shopping for a defenseman.

Staples noted that forward Kasperi Kapanen and Josh Samanski stepped up for the Oilers leading up to the Olympic break. He believes they’ve proven capable of playing top-nine minutes in the playoffs.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: No word from Stauffer or Staples as to which defenseman the Oilers could be eyeing in the trade market. They’re unlikely to pursue expensive blueliners such as the Devils’ Dougie Hamilton or the Blues’ Justin Faulk. More affordable options could include Luke Schenn or Logan Stanley of the Winnipeg Jets, or Connor Murphy of the Chicago Blackhawks.

POTENTIAL SABRES TRADE TARGETS

THE ATHLETIC: Matthew Fairburn recently listed several possible trade candidates for the Buffalo Sabres to shore up their blueline.

Options included Connor Murphy of the Blackhawks, Logan Stanley of the Jets, Justin Faulk of the Blues, Zack Whitecloud of the Calgary Flames, Mario Ferraro of the San Jose Sharks, and Braden Schneider of the New York Rangers.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Sabres have over $8.9 million in projected trade deadline cap space. They also have the prospects and young players to draw on for trade bait.

Faulk and Whitecloud are signed beyond this season if the Sabres seek more than a rental player. Faulk has a 15-team no-trade list, and Buffalo might be on that list.

The Flames acquired Whitecloud in the Rasmus Andersson trade, sparking speculation that they could flip him to a contender by March 6. However, he seemed pleased to be joining Calgary and could be a player worth retaining for their rebuilding process.

Ferraro’s name has occasionally surfaced in the rumor mill. However, the Sharks are trying to clinch their first playoff spot since 2019. It’s believed he’s willing to sign an extension, but no indication that it will happen before the trade deadline. He could bolt via free agency in July, but they could decide to hang onto him as an “own rental” and deal with the contract later.

The Rangers’ shift into sell mode last month has generated trade speculation about many of their players, especially after they traded Artemi Panarin to the Los Angeles Kings before the Olympic roster freeze. Schneider has surfaced as a trade candidate, but the Rangers might not be keen to send him upstate.

  1. Not sure NYR would be reluctant to deal with Buffalo. Pretty much has been the opposite. Was well reported the Savres didn’t want Eichel going downstate.
Shakeup in NJ- To Minnesota: Jack Hughes+ Jake Allen
To NJ: Yurov, Wallstedt, Jiricek, 2027+ 2028 1sts

    • How long is markstrom signed for? That actually might be an overpay for Jack. Can’t stay healthy. Maybe throw Luke in as well.

  2. with the Sharks having success and acquiring Sherwood, why would the risk their playoff chances by trading Ferraro, even if he’s a UFA ? makes no sense

I like Connor Murphy as a strong defensive dman for Buffalo, whose d corp seem to all be one dimensional and on offense

    • mikep, while San Jose (4-5-1 in their last 10 leading to the Olympic break) is having a decent season compared to recent ones, they still sit 11th in the Western Conference, 5 pts back of 8th place Anaheim (8-2-0 in their past 10).

Plugging along this season at a .527% pace, the Sharks would need to increase that to .611 over their final 27 games just t reach 91 pts, which looks more and more like the Western Conference cut-off mark for the playoffs.

And, to boot, they’ll have to climb over Nashville, Los Angeles and Anaheim (or perhaps Seattle (6-4-0 in their past 10) to grab that last WC slot.

Realistically, that is a tall order. And since Ferraro could possibly see both $$ advantages to testing the UFA waters, along with a chance to go to a team in a stronger position to go deep in the playoffs, maybe it’s best they get the best deal possible to strengthen their young team heading into next season.

  3. The Devils, at the 41-game halfway point, were 22 17 2 46pts 113gf 121ga -8 and a .561% pace. Since then, they have played 16 games, going 6 10 0 12pts 33gf 54ga -21 and a .375 % pace. With 97 pts looking more and more like the Eastern cut-off for a playoff spot, they would need to raise their current % pace from .509 to .760 over their remaining 25 games. They stand a better chance of falling down into good odds area for the # 1 draft pick!

As for the Leafs, since the half-way point when they were 19 15 7 45pts 136gf 134ga +2 and a .549 % pace, they too have played 16 games, going 8 6 2 18pts 51gf 56ga -5 and a .563 % pace. To get to 97 points they’d need to raise their % pace to .680. Somehow – and without factoring in what it would cost them in a trade – I doubt the addition of soon-to-be 33 y/o RD costing $9 mil per off the cap with 3 more years to run after this, is going to deliver much of a difference in raising their % pace from .553 to .680!

Why are pundits even raising those suggestions?

I could not agree with you more.

I do not see the point of the Leafs spending what few assets they have to chase a possible playoff spot.

I do not see the allure of adding Hamilton. He’s big but doesn’t play physically. He’s hardly a “shut down” defender. Leafs nation would not like this player.

Is it quite possible the Leafs best play is addition by subtraction?
Moving on from Rielly may be their best play. If rumours are true that SJ is interested, they need to do whatever it takes to make it happen. Perhaps SJ would be interested in OEL as a veteran presence on their blue line?

If the Leafs can follow in the mould of what Boston did last TDL, perhaps a quick re-tool is possible?

Approach Laughton with a 3 yr $4.5M contract offer to play 4C. If he says no, trade him.
Approach McMann with a 4yr $15M offer. If he says no, trade him.

Get what you can for these players and go into the offseason with more ammunition for picks or trades.

Domi, Macelli, Laughton, McMann, Lorentz, OEL.

Listen on Stolarz as it looks like Hildeby is ready for a back-up role.

      • Daryl agree100%. Teams like Toronto,NY,NJ just to name a few should do whatBoston,Pittsburgh and Washington have done in retooling. Decide who your core is then clean house!

      • While I’m not complaining about the work Dubas has done… let’s be honest. Part of his strategy is hoping for (and he luckily got) a fountain of youth. Not necessarily a great strategy for most teams. Pretty much nobody saw year coming. Sure some great trades and signings contributed. But Malkin karlsson crosby and to a lesser extent letang mantha playing this well is a long shot to repeat with other teams

      • I agree, Sr. And I would include Ottawa in that group as well.

Their chances of raising their % pace to .680 over their final 25 games ranks – in my opinion anyway – somewhere between slim and none.

So if they ‘re going to get involved in deals between now and trade deadline day, do so with an eye to next season.

Someone like RD Weegar – IF he’d agree to waive his NTC – would be a good place to start. Perhaps offering something like left-shot C/LW Ridly Grieg plus Calgary’s choice of either RD Carter Yakemchuk (7th overall in 2024) or Logan Hensler (23rd overall 2025) with, if necessary, assorted picks both ways.

Then see if the Oilers would be interested in veteran RD Nick Jensen ($4,050,000 cap hit and a UFA at season’s end for, say, a 3rd or 4th round pick. He’d be a steadying right-side cover for someone like Nurse for the rest of this season anyway.

  4. To Buffalo: Schneider and Othmann
    To NY: Helenius and Samuelsson

    • The Sabes would decline that trade. Helenius and Samuelsson are part of the Sabres’ longer term corps.

Schneider would benefit a team like the Penguins. The Penguins are in need of a RD. Karlsson and Letang have carried the load. St. Ivany has peaked.

  5. With the Fiala injury, look for the Kings to be players for another top 6 Player.

  6. Sorry Slick but your living in a dream world if you think the Sabres make that trade. Samuelsson has been there best defenseman this season and is signed to a very team friendly long term contract.
Helenius is there top center prospect with blazing speed.
Sorry but the Sabres aren’t making a tax deductible contribution to the little sisters of the poor with that trade.

    • I think slick is under the impression the rangers are selling a young rd with upside in Schneider whereas most of the rest of the league see a guy who might be borderline reclamation project. The truth is probably in the middle but from what I’ve seen slick might want to temper expectations. As he points out, ny doesn’t have to trade him. And the most common need I’ve seen on various trade sites for the deadline is rhd. Well… maybe number 2 center … but it seems most competitors hockey writers would like to shore up rhd. So maybe Schneider gets above value return🤷‍♂️

  7. I think NJ thinks they have an outside chance to make a run. Dougie’s not going anywhere unless Luke comes back (nobody knows extent of Lukes injury) Mercer is a decent winger, but he’s not a center. Jack is going nowhere.

    • vincois, if NJ management truly believe they have even a decent outside chance at making the playoffs, then it’s time to clean out that part of their structure.

As I post elsewhere, they would need to raise their current % pace from .509 to .760 over their remaining 25 games just to get to the 97 points it’s likely going to take to secure the last WC slot. And they would need to climb over 7 or 8 teams to get there: Florida, Philadelphia, Toronto, Ottawa, Washington, Columbus and NYI or Boston.

Do they really think all those teams are going to collapse sufficiently along the way to pave the way for the Devils?

  8. Canada beats France 10-2. So the US must beat Germany by 10 to take top seed. We could see them pull the goalie late in the game if up by 8 or 9.

    • They sure as Hell can’t be allowing any more long, floating shots from near center ice to go in! Those 3 goals by Denmark (and 2 posts) were costly.

  9. LA Kings looking for some scoring and they have one of the worst pp in the league.

Laine for Warren Foegele or Jeff Malott

As for RD Habs 3rd round pick for Flames Brayden Pachal.
