Could the Lightning consider trading Nikita Kucherov? What position could the Bruins attempt to improve this summer? What’s the latest on the Kings? Find out in today’s NHL Rumor Mill.

SHOULD THE LIGHTNING CONSIDER TRADING NIKITA KUCHEROV?

THE ATHLETIC: Pierre LeBrun pondered what’s next for the Tampa Bay Lightning after their fourth consecutive first-round playoff exit.

Lebrun wondered if general manager Julien BriseBois would consider trading Nikita Kucherov. The 32-year-old superstar winger was held pointless by the Montreal Canadiens in the final three games of the series, and his frustration was apparent throughout the series.

Kucherov has a year remaining on his contract and will be eligible for unrestricted free-agent status next July. He has a 10-team no-trade list on his current contract.

LeBrun believes the Lightning’s priority is to sign Kucherov to a contract extension. However, he pointed out that BriseBois hasn’t been afraid to make a big move in the trade market.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The only way I see the Lightning peddling Kucherov is if the two sides can’t agree to a contract extension this summer. It would be a significant roster change, representing another shift away from the core that won back-to-back Stanley Cups earlier in the decade.

THE BRUINS NEED A BLUELINE UPGRADE

THE ATHLETIC: Fluto Shinzawa believes the Boston Bruins must upgrade their blueline this summer.

Shinzawa noted the Bruins’ bottom three defensemen couldn’t take the burden off top-three blueliners Charlie McAvoy, Hampus Lindholm, and Nikita Zadorov during their first-round series against the Buffalo Sabres.

He also noted that the Sabres’ defensemen account for six goals in that series, while the Bruins’ blueliners generated none.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Changes will likely be coming to the Bruins’ blueline during the offseason. They have over $16 million in cap space with 21 active roster players under contract for 2026-27.

Winger Viktor Arvidsson is their only notable player eligible for free agency this summer. If they re-sign him, they’ll still have enough to make an addition or two to their defense corps. They could explore the limited options in this summer’s free-agent market, and they could be active in this summer’s trade market.

THE LATEST ON THE KINGS

MAYOR’S MANOR: Alexander Leggart highlighted the notable points from Friday’s press conference by Los Angeles Kings GM Ken Holland, who expressed his unhappiness over the club’s disappointing season.

Holland indicated that interim head coach DJ Smith will be a candidate to fill that role permanently. He also said that he’s likely to retain his 2026 first-round draft pick (17th overall) rather than use it as a trade chip for more immediate help.

    • Haha yeah, there must be someone mid-thirties-ish, overpaid, and whose play is trending the wrong way that Kenny can spend that pick on.

  2. Borgen to Boston for a pick?

    Cost controlled defensive defenseman

    Reasonable 2nd paring Dman

I’d listen to offers for Kucherov and get max value back. TB gets good drafting in late rounds so draft capital and a top prospect back would still keep them competitive.

Send him to LA ? Take the 17th plus more picks and a top prospect?

  3. Haha every team that gets eliminated….someone in media ponders if that team’s superstar will want out, or get traded.

Rather than speculate on the more unlikely scenario wouldn’t an upgrade at center on Kucherov’s line be along the lines of what TB may and should be looking at?

Point looked liked a shadow of his former self all season and sure injuries played a part.

Could EP find his game again under Cooper with Hagel and Kuch as wingers?

    • I think teams with the cap space should take a run at EP if they think they can get him into an environment where he can succeed.

Try and pay minimum cost for EP at 8m, sign perry at 1 and Raddysh at 4,5 and they are under the cap. And yes, if they cant agree with Kucherov this summer they should trade him

  4. The Lightning seem to be at a crossroads now and stuck in no man’s land. Still a great team but they’ve hit a wall. Four straight first round exits. Some great players but their core has mostly passed their 30th birthdays and their prospect pool is pretty much non existent

I think Brisebois will do everything possible to re-sign Kucherov because the team still has it in them to possibly make another deep run. But they’re not too far away from having to look at a rebuild or retool.

    • Maybe closer than we think, Howard. As I posted the other day, if I had to pick one team that could be the 2026-27 version of the monumental collapses suffered this past season by Winnipeg, Toronto and Florida, that would be Tampa. This is a team getting old fast – turning before or during next season –
      31 – Raddysh, Johanssen, Point
32 – Guentzel, Bjorkstrand, Paul, Santini, Girgensons, Vasilevsky
      33 – Kucherov
      34 – Sabourin
      35 – Gourde
      36 – Hedman
      37 – McDonough
      41 – Perry

Certainly not helping in any way is being ranked 29th in terms of prospect pool according to consensus among The Hockey Writers, who note:

“The Tampa Bay Lightning has been in the bottom five of this ranking for almost four years running, as a result of their aggressive pursuit of more Stanley Cups.”

That has to catch up to you sooner or later, and aside from players like Kucherov, Point. Raddysh and Guentzel, none of the others listed above are bringing back anything of any significance in deals.

  5. Remember all the rumors and headlines last week about Brady Tkachuck leaving Ottawa?
Well apparently the eliminations by Edmonton (McDavid), Dallas (Robertson), and TB (Kucherov) were the best thing for him taking a backseat in the rumor mill! 🙂
Who’s next??? Michkov when Carolina sweeps them?
