In the Sunday NHL Rumor Roundup, it’s the latest on Zach Werenski, Kirill Marchenko, Jason Robertson, Dylan Larkin, and Darnell Nurse.
UPDATES ON ZACH WERENSKI AND KIRILL MARCHENKO
THE ATHLETIC: Pierre LeBrun reports the Columbus Blue Jackets face three possibilities regarding defenseman Zach Werenski. They can trade the 28-year-old Norris Trophy winner during this offseason, wait until next summer when he has a year left on his contract, or keep him for the remaining two years of his deal.
LeBrun indicated that Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell wants NHL players in return for Werenski, not draft picks and prospects. He also noted that the blueliner’s no-movement clause becomes a 10-team trade list next summer.

It’s believed that eight to 10 teams have contacted the Blue Jackets about Werenski. LeBrun expects the Dallas Stars, Philadelphia Flyers, San Jose Sharks, and Carolina Hurricanes to be among them. He also believes the Toronto Maple Leafs would be one team the blueliner might consider. It’s not believed that Werenski’s agent has given the Blue Jackets a list of preferred trade destinations.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Waddell can afford to take his time to evaluate his options and suitable trade offers. The fact that he wants players in return could make this situation drag on for a while.
Werenski’s $9.583 million cap hit for the next two seasons will also be a factor. It’s unlikely Waddell will retain any part of it. Of the teams noted by LeBrun, the Stars have the least amount of cap space ($9.26 million), plus they’re also dealing with the Jason Robertson situation. More on that below.
Meanwhile, the Blue Jackets must also deal with the news that Kirill Marchenko doesn’t intend to sign a contract extension. The 25-year-old winger is a year away from becoming a restricted free agent with arbitration rights.
LeBrun noted that Marchenko has not requested a trade and is ready to return to play next season and the season after that, as the Blue Jackets will still control his rights for that season. Nevertheless, he doesn’t want to stick around for the long term.
Several teams, including the Montreal Canadiens, have called about Marchenko. However, Waddell has told teams that he’s not going to trade the winger this summer.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Waddell’s position could change if a team is willing to overpay for Marchenko. As with Werenski, he can afford to be patient with this situation.
STARS STILL NEGOTIATING WITH JASON ROBERTSON
THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS: Lia Assimakopoulos reports Stars GM Jim Nill said his club still wants to re-sign Jason Robertson.
The 26-year-old winger is a restricted free agent with arbitration rights on July 1. Last week, Robertson rejected a trade that the Stars had lined up with the Seattle Kraken by refusing to accept an eight-year contract offer ($15 million average annual value) from the Kraken.
It’s believed the two sides are $2 million apart, with the Stars offering $12 million annually while Robertson seeks $14 million. He lacks a no-movement clause, but many teams won’t agree to trade for him if he’s unwilling to sign an extension with them.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Nill and the Robertson camp could reach an agreement on a new contract. The winger could file for arbitration, forcing the two sides to settle on a one-year deal that takes him up to unrestricted free-agent status next July. If Robertson files for arbitration, he’s ineligible to sign an offer sheet from another club.
The fact that there was a sign-and-trade scenario with Seattle suggests that Robertson may have played his final game with the Stars. He could be on the move if the right team makes a contract pitch similar to what he received from the Kraken.
THE LATEST ON DYLAN LARKIN
DETROIT HOCKEY NOW: Bob Duff reports Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman is no closer to trading center Dylan Larkin. The 29-year-old Red Wings captain submitted a trade request earlier this month.
Yzerman made a short statement yesterday, indicating that Larkin has five years remaining on his contract. He said that he will do what’s best for the Red Wings, adding that there is no guarantee that Larkin’s request could or should be met.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Yzerman’s statement suggests that he hasn’t received any offers that would entice him to move Larkin. He seems prepared to wait the entire summer if necessary.
Larkin initially listed three clubs (Minnesota Wild, Florida Panthers, and Vegas Golden Knights) as preferred destinations. It’s rumored that he’d be open to expanding that list, and he might have to if he hopes to be moved before the start of next season.
DARNELL NURSE IS STILL WAITING FOR A TRADE
EDMONTON JOURNAL: Robert Tychkowski reports the Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Boston Bruins are believed to be on Darnell Nurse’s trade list.
Tychkowski suggested the Bruins could be the most likely landing spot. The Bruins need a left-shot defenseman to pair with Charlie McAvoy. They might be willing to include Mason Lohrei in the return, but he’d only be suitable for third-pairing minutes with the Oilers.
The Anaheim Ducks have been mentioned as a destination for Nurse. However, they already have Jackson LaCombe and Pavel Mintyukov as their top four on left defense, and they need depth on the right side of their blueline.
Moving Nurse became more difficult with Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski emerging as a trade candidate.
Meanwhile, Kurt Leavins believes Nurse’s situation is holding up management’s roster plans for next season.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The decline in Nurse’s performance over the past two years, combined with his $9.25 million AAV for the next four seasons, already made him a difficult sell in the trade market. Werenski’s potential availability will make it even more difficult for the Oilers to move him this summer.
What am I missing with the “Werenski” going to Dallas…would i love to see him on the Stars….SURE…but where does he fit? Miro is the #1 D-man. Lindell fills the 2nd role well and compliments Miro. Miro and Werenski aren’t going to play as #1 & #2 , and only one can play on the power play. Then there’s Harley on the 2nd pairing…so Werenksi plays with Harley? No way.
Now if people are suggesting a straight up swap of Heiskenen or Harley and pick, for Werenski, that is something the Stars should think about.
Well, Heiskanen has been playing the RS, so Zach could play with him, and PP duty could be both on PP#1…………

I sincerely doubt Columbus would send Norris winner Werenski to Dallas straight up for Harley. It would take a LOT more than that, IMO … such as ether Bourque or Bichsel + a 1st round pick.

The Bruins get the Leafs pick after the Flyers do. The top 5 protected knocked it back a year and then they traded that pick to Philly. So Philly in 27, Bruins 28.
Check this but pretty sure once Toronto Traded its 2028 1st round pick the 2027 pick the Flyers own is not 10 top protected anymore.
If they pick is in top 10 then the Flyers pick would revert to 2028 but seeing as they already traded the pick I believe its the Flyers regardless of where they finish.

Top 5 protected, slides to 2027. The 2027 pick goes to Philadelphia (as part of Laughton trade) if it is outside the top 10, which converts this pick to Boston to a 2028 unprotected 1st Round Pick. If this Pick slides to 2027 and is in the top 10, TOR can either transfer it to BOS to satisfy this trade and then give PHI the 2028 unprotected, or transfer it to PHI and give BOS the 2028 unprotected 1st Round Pick
What if Yzerman goes to Larkin and asks what would it take to make you want to stay? How about we trade for your buddy Werenski. Then we offer sheet Robertson. Would that do it?
Isn’t Larkin’s issue that he is tired of waiting for the Wings to become a legit playoff contender? If Yzerman could make them so he would surely have made more progress than he has so far.
Larkin isn’t staying in Detroit. If he’s still on the roster come the start of the season, Detroit fans will boo him everytime he’s on the ice.
How about the crowd reaction to Werenski and Marchenko? That’ll do wonders for team morale in both Detroit and Columbus.
George O What do you think team morale would be like for Detroit players if the Wings trade Larkin for spare parts and/or futures? Unless some of the prospects came in a lit the ice on fire, the season would be done before it even starts and they would know it. Wings already needed a better option than Copp at 2C but you also take out Larkin and it’s over in that division before it even starts.
Larkin made his bed by making it public (and only listing 3 teams) and if he has to face his teammates, the media and fans to start the season, that’s on him.
If i was Yzerman i would negotiate with every team interested in Larkin with no list at all. Then i would take the 3 best offers i’m willing to take and go back to him and say “you want a trade now, these are the options, choose one or play for the Wings until i get an offer from a team you are willing to go to.
That last would be the perfect scenario for Yzerman, Kronwalled!

But the guy’s been a pro for 4 seasons, and while he’s had sort of decent seasons in Providence he hasn’t come close to “lighting it up” anywhere.
He’s likely closer to becoming another 1st Round bust than he is a dynamic goal scorer.
That the best they could get in return is undrafted Ivan Ivan (2020 eligible) sort of says it all. At least Providence will be in the unique position of having a player whose surname and given name will be on the back of his jersey.
I would do it for Nurse, if left or right shot didn’t matter, but it does.
Nurse is the beast player in the deal, but overpaid by say $2.5M
Korpisalo is an average backup who is overpaid by $1.5M Mittelstadt is overpaid by that much as well. And a pending UFA.
Lohrei is the wild card, will it start clicking for him when it comes to puck management and decision making? He’s at that experience level now, depends what the B’s think.
Zadorov can play his offside in the top 4, not ideal though. Although him with Nurse would be no fun to play against.
The Avs have had some luck recent luck in 2nd-chance pickups (Nichushkin and Ryan Graves), but they’ve also been a last stop for guys like Nail Yakupov. Nice low-risk move.
Gonna miss Ivan Ivan. Was hoping he’d make the roster out of camp this year. Good energy, good attitude.

We have a concurrent experiment in unfettered player movement going on in the NCAA. AT the moment, every player can be a free agent every year, and groups of players are selecting programs to move to as a unit, some with, and some without (reportedly) coaching input.
Fan response at the majority of programs, who lose talent to a small number of “elite” “schools”, is pretty negative.
NHL would do well to err on the side of a contract being a contract, with it not being unheard of to sign a three or four year deal so a player has several bites at the apple in his career.

It all started with Lindross!
Tom Cousineau, John Elway, and Eli Manning are some NFL players who were drafted but chose not to play with what they perceived as losing teams. Cousineau decided to play with the Argos in the CFL. When he decided to come back to the NFL his rights were traded to the Browns with a package that included a 1st round pick. That pick turned out to be Jim Kelly who decided to go to the USFL. After the USFL folded he signed with the Bills and got a police escort to the signing.
We will have a summer full of whiney players pouting because they aren’t getting their way.
Gary, Cousineau played with the Montreal Alouettes in the CFL not the Argos. It was Rocket Ismael who played in Toronto. And Doug Flutie.

Lindros? Lindros didn’t sign a contract then ask out of it. He wasn’t even an NHL player at the time. All he said was don’t draft me cause I’m not playing for you. Nordiques had the entire league to trade their 1st overall with.
Lindros was free to not play in Quebec, play in European league or anywhere else.

I would go all out to get Werenski he is a whole better than Charlie. Even Chuck and a first for Zach. Liked trade yesterday for JJ. But could not understand the second round pick that’s turned out to be a goalie.
They already have all star goalies in Providence please don’t tell me Sweeney thinking of using Dipietro for trade bait I mean if it’s for Werenski go for it

I don’t see Larkin going anywhere right now. The offers Yzerman has been getting have obviously been underwhelming and he will wait for a solid offer that’ll include a top flight player. Preferably a center. That’s not coming anytime soon. Yzerman is obviously under pressure to get to the play. He will wait and hope that the Wings can get into the playoffs next year and maybe that’ll convince Larkin to stick around. If they miss the playoffs again it’ll be the next GM’s problem.
Same with Werenski. He’s the face of the franchise. Waddell will keep him and hope for improvement next season. If things don’t work out there will be plenty of suitors next summer. Time is on his side.
On the other hand I do see a possibility of Marchenko being traded now. His value is high right now. He’s got two years of team control so the issue of signing an extension isn’t there right now. Teams like the Habs would trade for him and worry about an extension next year. Obviously it would take a big offer but it may well happen. If Waddell waits another year he’ll be in the same situation as the Isies were last year with Dobson. Having a top player who wants out and who could file for arbitration and then walk the next year if he’s not traded to the team he wants. That would limit the list of teams that he could be traded to.
I also think it’s likely Trochek stays with the Rangers. With the Dorofiyev deal and with Lafreniere picking it up a bit after Panarin was traded, Drury likely thinks they could get back into the playoffs next year. So he’ll wait. He’s under no pressure to trade Trochek. He has three years left on his contract. Then if the Rangers are out again he can trade him at the deadline or next summer.
Howard, Waddell is saying he wants roster players in return for Marchenko, not picks and prospects. That makes sense to me, and it takes the Habs out of the running.
Even if the Habs were in the running it would take a lot to acquire him and it would not be in keeping with Hughes “now and in the long run” strategy to give up a ransom for Marchenko for just two years.
George: I thought the AI response was pretty good. But the basketball GM analogy doesn’t necessarily map over to hockey. There are 5 starters in basketball, and around double that that get into the game. Twice as many hockey players see ice time so the impact of a star player moving in hockey isn’t as big.
LJ, I see your point. But don’t overlook the fact that Seravalli – far from the most reliable pundit out there but also far from the worst – felt the Habs put in an insane offer. I would guess it includes prospects and NHLers. Also consider that with each passing month. Waddell’s leverage diminishes.
I was just listening to the Starr & D’Amico podcast which many Habs fans are quite familiar with. They agreed that low first rounders won’t move the needle for a player like Marchenko. It would take NHLers and NHL ready prospects. Names mentioned were Guhle, Zharovsky, Fowler. I think the Habs could certainly put together a decent package.
Again, I’m not saying it happens. But it’s not impossible. Last year when I first started hearing Dobson speculation I thought that was a pipe dream.

There are 32 teams in the league, all with the same roster size. All with the same cap space, should they wish to max out this year. About half of them seem to fly under the radar on this trade rumor stuff, and on the free agent signing noise, and seldom appear on the list of targets, yet they all start every year with a full roster. I’m guessing that the feeling is mutual in the places a player like Larkin isn’t wanting to go have a philosophical bias against a player who publically wants to leave his team, even if the reasons are valid. ie. McDonough for personal reasons was unhappy in Nashville and wanted to return specifically to Tampa and the first anyone outside knew about it was after MaC arrived back in Tampa, with both sides complimentary about a “professional” deal.
These public negotiations run high risks for all involved of starting the next chapter on the wrong foot. Larkin has guaranteed himself a microscope and high bar no matter where he plays next year.
Mcdonaghs return to Tampa wasn’t by request. It actually just happened naturally and Tampa didn’t pass.
All of this after Tampa forced him out via the Drury method of waive or be placed on waivers.
Wasn’t there a time when aging stars chased a Cup by signing on with good teams for the league minimum? That was the way – complete your contract then sign with a contender.
I think a perfect, all-encompassing word for those like Tkachuk, Larkin, Werenski, Marchenko is malcontent – defined in the Cambridge dictionary this way:
“A malcontent is a person who is chronically dissatisfied, unhappy with the current state of affairs, and often rebellious against authority or the established system. As both a noun and an adjective, the term describes someone who is hard to please and prone to constant complaining or making trouble to force change.”
Sums the above up pretty well.
Of those in your example, George, only Marchenko seems to me to come close to that definition.
Larkin: 11 years with Detroit.
Tkachuk: 7 years with Ottawa.
Werenski: 10 years with CBJ.
As far as I know, none of these three said anything about moving on until the end of this season. Hard to see them as chronically dissatisfied when their teams are either not or just barely playoff contenders year after year, don’t you think?
Marchenko is a surprise, though his wanting to move may be because of the exodus from CBJ.
Larkin is the longest active Red Wing, 11 years and running. He is also successful at being in the team’s most critical position as captain and #1C. He put in his time on a failing team. I do not blame him for wanting out. Was he also a “malcontent” for those 11 years? HA!
LJ & Johnny Z, keep in mind that none among Larkin, Tkachuk or Werenski did anything more than their teammates over those many years to push their team into the playoffs … or were they, in their self-centered opinions, the ONLY marchers in step in those long parades? If that’s how they feel, talk about runaway hockey narcissism! “I’m great … what they put around me is s*&t!”
Somehow I don’t believe these guys just made up their minds in the last few weeks that they wanted out. That had to be festering in their minds going back a few seasons.

Ivan Ivan good defensive guy has trouble finishing around the net and takes too many penalties. However, gives an honest effort/responsible with his checking ability. Thought he should have got more of a chance but who knows, good luck to him!
NHL is no longer a patience league. Lysell has been given chances, but clearly the Bruins thought he’d gone as far as he could in Boston.
tommy boy, not a Bruins fan, but when musing about Ottawa perhaps seeing if they could obtain him at some point in the 2024-25 off- season, I read assessments of his overall game that said, rather than keeping things simple and stick to the system, he had this stubborn tendency towards trying flashy one-on-one plays.
While that may have worked in Major Junior where 95% of those he played against would never see a pro game, and even, perhaps – albeit to a much lesser degree – in the AHL, he just looked lost against the heavier and higher-tempo NHL players – even in practice and exhibition games. That also contributed to his defensive liabilities.
Maybe the deal, and realizing this might be his last shot, he finally listens to the Colorado coaches – whether NHL or AHL – and starts to to play within an established system and quit trying to be a hi-lite reel candidate.

I wonder what offer the Habs put together for Marchenko. Guhle, a first, and… Reinbacher? Hage? And why wouldn’t Columbus accept that? It’s not like they’re contenders
Perhaps because their scouts and analysts don’t see the overall potential of those players in quite the same light as do some Montreal fans? Clearly, Columbus would – when the time comes to move Marchenko – want an established term F coming back – not prospects who have played all of 2 NHL games combined.
Fair enough, Waddell may want to ensure Fantilli sees hope on the horizon.
But as I have said before, even elite players don’t always bring in a staggering haul.
The Canucks didn’t get a massive return for Hughes; the Sens did well to get three first rounders, but no roster player in return and no immediate replacement of equal value in Eklund. Peterka and McTavish each brought two first rounders but again immediate equivalency for their rosters.
So Waddell has time but I I doubt the Habs or any other team are going to offer a lop sided deal for either Marchenko even Werenski.
Ivan Ivan will break the Bruins lineup according to Sweeney. Lysell got zero games last year in the NHL. Merkolev the same. Poitras three games. Brunet zero games….Dipietro zero games. I hope Lysell rips it up in Colorado! Is Ivan Ivan gonna replace Poitras who has the skill set of Joe Juneau! Surely NOT! Get rid of the farm team Boston! You don’t need it!

The difference in your proposals about 1st are possibility that the Ranger’s picks may be higher than Montreal’s picks if they follow up this year’s performance for the next few years.
Also, Vegas traded Dorifeyev because they couldn’t afford him so they do’t want salary coming back.
Columbus wants players signed to contracts coming back to ensure they’ll stick around.
Dach isn’t getting anything from anybody. He’s injured all the time. Also, he’s a RFA.
Waddell wants NHL players back, not picks or prospects. If you want the Marchenko you’ll likely have to include Kapanen or Newhook, Guhle or Struble, and Fowler to start.
Also, if he’s looking for a payday similar to Dorofeyev, that would be much higher than the current salary’s of their top players are structured.

Dorofeyev brought back #26 this draft, # 92 this draft and a conditional next year draft, top 10 protected.

While you discount Dach’s value, it has to be at least worth a late 1st, Farrell has some NHL experience.

More importantly I didn’t suggest that this was the discussion, and Waddell isn’t saying anything of substance to reporters before and during talks.
I repeat, the two players are very similar, in fact Dorofeyev put up better numbers than Marchenko, so there’s no reason to view him as out of reach.

Dach has little value as an oft-injured, RFA with a $4M QO.
IMO, it would start with Guhle, Kapanen, and two 1st round picks OR a good prospect and only one 1st rounder.
