Am I Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?-NHL Playoff Predictions Round 2
In the opening round of the 2017 Stanley Cup playoffs, I pitted my predictions against my 11-year-old nephew Jace.
We weren’t far apart with our projected outcomes. Jace went five for eight, with his only errors selecting the Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins to advance to the second round. I went six for eight, as I also picked the Habs and Hawks to move on.
So far ,I can be considered slightly smarter than a knowledgeable fifth-grade hockey fan. However, Jace now has a good chance to rebound in the second round.
With his second-round predictions, Jace picks the Nashville Predators over the St. Louis Blues, the Edmonton Oilers upsetting the Anaheim Ducks, the New York Rangers eliminating the Ottawa Senators and the Washington Capitals beating the Pittsburgh Penguins.
I was a little surprised to see him take the Caps over his beloved Penguins when he submitted his opening-round bracket two weeks ago. He evidently saw nothing in their respective opening-round performances to change his mind, so hat’s off to him for being unbiased.
In my recent NHL Puck Drops column for The Guardian (PEI), I also selected Washington and Nashville to advance. In the other series, however, I’m picking Anaheim and Ottawa.
I feel the Ducks’ experience plus their depth on the blueline and in goal gives them the advantage over the Oilers. Still, I admire Jace’s boldness for selecting the underdog in this one. I also feel the Senators defense gives them the edge over the Rangers.
Be sure to check back when the second round ends to see how we fared with our predictions. And remember, folks, this is simply a bit of fun between me and my nephew. Please enjoy the next round of the playoffs responsibly, everyone!
