It’s another thing that we (Canadians) inherited from a British tradition…. we were part of the British Empire
A day traditionally for giving to those in need…. I think the “box” came from the Alms Box….. charitable box to put coins and bills … typically to the church but on the 26th …. to go to those in need

Pengy, the rich gave to the poor, the servants got the day off and brought the boxes home to their families.
Like Christmas itself Boxing day lost its original meaning along time ago.
Not saying Christmas doesn’t still have it meaning for many folks, but it became commercialized a long time ago.
