The NHL and NHLPA release their COVID protocol for 2022-23, Wayne Gretzky has been hit with a $10 million lawsuit, Jets center Mark Scheifele clarifies his end-of-season comments and more in today’s NHL morning coffee headlines.

NHL.COM: The NHL and NHLPA released their COVID-19 protocol for 2022-23. There’s little change from last season’s protocol.

Testing will only happen for asymptomatic players and those crossing the Canada-US border. Those who test positive must isolate for five days if asymptomatic and 10 days if experiencing symptoms. Unvaccinated players remain unable to cross the border.

The NHL can postpone, reschedule or cancel games and events due to a COVD-19 outbreak if it poses a health risk to players and others.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Detroit Red Wings forward Tyler Bertuzzi and Edmonton Oilers forward Josh Archibald were the only two unvaccinated NHL players by the end of last season. Archibald, now with the Pittsburgh Penguins, received a medical exemption in May. The travel restriction for the coming season would only apply to Bertuzzi unless he gets vaccinated or receives a medical exemption.

NEW YORK POST: cites TMZ reporting Hall-of-Famer Wayne Gretzky has been hit with a $10 million lawsuit accusing him of lying about losing 35 pounds after using a weight-loss gum for two months.

TSN: Winnipeg Jets center Mark Scheifele downplayed speculation about his future based on his end-of-season comments in May. He pointed out that he prefaced those remarks by professing his love of playing in Winnipeg and his desire to remain with the Jets. Scheifele claims his comment about thinking about his career and what was best for him after the club missed the playoffs was misconstrued by the media.

I was confident I was coming back until I saw all the media headlines and then all of a sudden it’s I’m getting traded and who knows where I’m going and all that stuff,” said Scheifele.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff played down Scheifele’s comments last spring. He said the exit interview between the two went well, dismissing Scheifele’s remarks as an emotional reaction to missing the playoffs.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft said Darnell Nurse and Leon Draisaitl are progressing well recovering from injuries suffered during the 2022 playoffs. Both are currently working out and Woodcroft expects they’ll be ready for training camp next summer.

NBC SPORTS CHICAGO: The Blackhawks signed Jack Johnson to a one-year contract worth $950K. The 35-year-old defenseman played for the Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche last season, appearing in 74 regular-season games and 13 playoff contests.

MONTREAL GAZETTE: Former NHL forward Cedric Paquette has signed a one-year contract with KHL club Dinamo Minsk in Belarus.

CAP FRIENDLY: indicates Derek Stepan has signed a professional tryout offer with the Carolina Hurricanes.

SALTWIRE: One of the two arenas at Summerside’s Credit Union Place was named in honor of New York Rangers head coach Gerard Gallant.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Congratulations to Gallant for this well-deserved honor by his hometown. Gallant is among the best-known hockey men from Prince Edward Island. He started his playing career in Summerside’s minor hockey program and went on to play 11 seasons in the NHL from 1984-85 to 1994-95.

Since 2014-15, Gallant has become one of the league’s top coaches. He won the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year in 2017-18 and guided the Vegas Golden Knights to the 2018 Stanley Cup Final. He took over behind the Rangers’ bench last season.

  1. Wow. There are LIES – or at least positive embellishments in commercials? Who’da thunk?

The ones who should be fined are the dummies who believe everything they see and hear in a commercial. Probably the same ones who believe everything they see and hear in TV Reality shows is “real.”

    • GeorgeO, there is a lot of gullible people out there.

Winnipeg just went thru a grandparents scam, two ladies from Ontario charged for scamming thousands because they were told their grandchild was in jail and needed the money to get out. Or something like that.

6 grandparents fell for it. My thought was why didn’t you call his or her cell, call your child or say he got him/herself in trouble they can find there way out.

folks always trying to scam and they always find some prey.

  2. They’’re suing the great one. There is some truth that Wayne did lose about 20 pounds but it wasn’t the gum He took his wallet out of his pants pocket.
Sweeney still the worst gm in the nhl. Won’t respond to you know who and you know what.

    • And yet,..whoever knows the colour of the gum under the lawyers desk who is suing ,……wins! ‘)

  3. That 35 pounds in 2 weeks pretty much not humanly possible to do. Maybe in hospital under a nutrition drip as only source of food. 99 can pay that with his spare change if he loses the case so no cry for him

    • Two months, not two weeks. Even then, it would still be difficult to drop that much weight in a healthy way over that time period.

      • Aww, I get all that … I am just so fed up with this ongoing “I’m gonna file a law suit” because it didn’t work for me … or my crotch was scalded when I spilled my coffee and I wasn’t warned it was hot … or I was INcensed when I tuned into my favourite TV program and my kids heard the work “s*&t” (the kind of complaint that led to the idiotic “viewer discretion is advised” heard repeatedly today at the beginning of a show and after every commercial break, including the break just before the closing credits!)

      • IDK Lyle, I lost 30lbs in a single month years back.

I didn’t realize how big i became until i seen a picture of myself and notice a beachball under my shirt.

I use to drink a lot of pop (soda drinks) go to the washroom middle of the night, stop by the fridge for a squid of pop.

I cut carbonated beverages out of my diet and walked everyday. from 220lbs to 190bls.

I remember a friend, said she was scare to ask me because she thought i was sick.

It can be done, easier if your over weight.

      • As the saying goes, results may vary. In your case, you cut out a very unhealthy part of your diet, did moderate exercise and saw considerable weight loss within a month. However, every medical expert on the subject says 1-2 pounds per week is the safest, healthiest, and most realistic rate of weight loss.
        https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/weight-loss/in-depth/weight-loss/art-20047752#:~:text=Over%20the%20long%20term%2C%20it's,diet%20and%20regular%20physical%20activity.

As for Gretzky, he’s being sued by the inventor of the gum. His alleged weight loss claim prompted the inventor and other investors to provide more funding to the gum’s parent company, which the inventor claimed Gretzky “surreptitiously purchased under his family’s name.”

      • Hey George,

I’m with ya, but the coffee spill incident was much more than just hot coffee burning someone.

I thought the same when I first read the story, But after seeing the details it was clear McDonald’s was grossly at fault. Normal temp should be 120-140f. It’s estimated the coffee in that case was 180-190f.

120 degrees f, would take approximately 10 minutes to burn skin. Anything over 140 is instant. 180-190 is much hotter than one could reasonably expect.

In that case , the woman spent 8 days in a hospital with 3rd degree burns in a VERY sensitive area. If it were a reasonable temp, it would be a mild inconvenience.

Not to get off the subject, but that story is portrayed much differently than the facts of the case reveal.

Overall agree, here in the states you can’t watch TV for 15 minutes without seeing a commercial of how to sue anybody.

      • Yeah, I remember that McDonald’s case well CaptainObvious – received a lot of attention u p here as well – and in that instance the law suit had a solid foundation.

But that was then soon followed by a slew of copycat law suits and it’s those sort of frivolous proceedings that I was thinking of – just didn’t word it properly.

      • Lyle

My apologies that was type o. On my part. 🙁

      • I’ve got a balm for anyone chafing over frivolous lawsuits….

      • Which means what exactly?

      • Read the link provided.

      • I lost 22 lbs in 8 days, and I was in OK shape at the time.
You can too, all you need is some salmonella and be too stupid to realize it is not just the stomach flu so you don’t go see a doctor until a buddy tells you how stupid you are for not going to see one.

      • Not sure if you were responding to me with the “read the link” Lyle … but if so, my comment was directed at Chrisms’ cryptic (sarcastic?) “I’ve got a balm for anyone chafing over frivolous lawsuits….”

      • Ahhh …. damn, I LOVED that show and “balm” should have clicked … maybe I’m losing it in my old age – Kramer’s shyster lawyer – LOL

  4. @RWM
Your comment about Gretzky is pretty funny , as per losing 20 lbs , he took his wallet out of his back pocket !

As per Sweeney , won’t respond to you know who , and you know what !

You and Jacobs have to put your foot down and come up with a game plan !
Perhaps approach to board of directors in Toronto , ask them for permission to negotiate with Mr. Kyle Dubais ..
He might be your saviour !
End of the Sweeney Saga !
Good Luck and Leaf fans will LUV U , make a stone monument, in remembrance of their saviour RWM outside of Air Canada Center
    God Bless RWM !!

  5. Jesus on a shiny moped, this sue happy society is getting out of control. Warning labels on damned near everything because the company would rather pay off a nuisance suit than go to court. My thought is that (for example) you’re so stupid that you try using a blow dryer while you’re still in the shower, the best thing that can happen is to improve the gene pool is by letting you get electrocuted and removing your genes from it.

  6. Bruins sign JD Greenway to a tryout contract and will be in camp … he’s Big and mean and has some game would be a nice fit on the 4th line and protect the Bruins stars … get rid of Smith and Foligno add Greenway and Looch

    • Joe, JD is just a Hal Gill clone useless. Rumour has it Sweenboy has been looking at offers for Craig Smith this worries me. We’re talking about a guy who would most likely trade a Babe Ruth Rookie card for a Robert Person ( Bowmann)/

      • Make up your mind You want him to trade players or not. I am sure he is looking for your guidance on making deals. Rumours w he reads your posts with his morning coffee to figure out what not to do

  7. Anyway, back to hockey, in the local Sun this morning they run an article on the 6 Ottawa Senator prospects currently playing in the Junior tournament, with particular focus on LW Ridley Greig of the Brandon Wheat Kings in the WHL.

After a season with Brandon Wheat Kings of the WHL where he potted 26g 37a 64 pts and a +26 in just 39gp, he’s been named player of the game twice so far for the Canadian entry in contributing 3g 3a 6pts in 4gp, including a game winner.

He’s also reportedly very good on face-offs – which helps if the C is chucked from the face-off circle – and plays with a bit of a chip on his shoulder, unafraid to go into the tough areas.

All of this to say that, should he do well enough in camp to crack the roster, he could make it convenient to deal Alex Formenton who appears to be headed for 3rd line LW duty anyway back of Tkachuk and Stutzle, who’ll likely shift back there to make room for Giroux at C on the 3nd line.

    • Not the “threcond line” – LOL – 2nd line

  8. Disappointed in Cedric Paquette signing to play in Russia. He hasn’t made big money (“only” 8 million) in his career, and he isn’t breaking the law. But really, given the whole Russia thing in the Ukraine …

He could’ve played in Europe, yes for less money but for longer than a year, better life style (which is crap for North Americans in Russia), and he could look himself in the mirror.

And in anticipation of the “it’s his choice” replies, I already know that.

    • I agree … our government is busy applying sanctions to all things Russian – left, right and center …. while they continue to slaughter innocent civilians in the Ukraine – and this bozo sees no problem in going there to play hockey?

Go the flipping AHL – even $60,000 to $80,000 is better than the vast majority earns in North America.
