TSN’s Pierre LeBrun and Darren Dreger report the Montreal Canadiens are trading Sean Monahan to the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for a first-round pick and a conditional pick pending trade call.

NHL.COM: Trade confirmed. Monahan to the Jets in exchange for the Jets’ 2024 first-round pick and a conditional third-round pick in 2027.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: TSN’s John Lu reports the Jets are shoring up their depth at center with Mark Scheifele currently sidelined by a lower-body injury. They went 2-3-1 during his absence before the All-Star Break.

This is an affordable addition for the Jets, who were jockeying for first overall before Scheifele was injured. The 29-year-old Monahan carries a $1.95 million salary for this season. He is enjoying a bounce-back performance after missing most of last season due to lower-body injuries. He was third on the rebuilding Canadiens in scoring with 35 points in 49 games. He’ll slot into the second-line center position behind Scheifele.

The Canadiens got a conditional 2025 first-round pick from the Calgary Flames in 2022 for taking on the remainder of Monahan’s former contract which carried a $6.35 million cap hit. This deal with the Jets means they now have two first-rounders in this year’s draft and two in 2025. That provides them the option of keeping those picks for themselves or using some of them as trade bait to bring in some established young talent.

  1. Two really good players dealt this week. Canucks and Jets fans should feel great. This might kick off an active trade deadline. That would be a nice change.
Is All Star weekend over yet?

  2. Monohan to Jets. Book it!

    • Duuuuuuuuh

    • Tripper, you nailed it! Nice.

I never thought Monahan would bring a first. I was definitely wrong on this one. A first and a conditional 3rd, that’s a decent haul.

      • Jets are happy to get a 2C for their pick. Would be even happier to give the conditional 3rd rounder.

  3. I think this is going to be another year where all the trades happen WAY before the deadline and then deadline day coverage is boring as all heck.

I think it must have something to do with how close the standings are these days. GMs do not want to wait until first week of March where it’s too late to do anything but plan for playoffs… now we have some who want to strengthen or improve their teams to somehow vault into a WC spot.

    • Trade happing sooner than latter for Centres Canucks & Jets both out from…
      Re: flames

Sounds like Calgary are receiving lots of inquiries & interest in both there D/men

Hanifin should be a big haul..

Tanev I think will get a 2nd and a prospect or a roster young player like a Kakko
      Or
possibly a 1st pick if the bidding gets crazy…..

      • It will surely be interesting to see where Tanev goes. I know Ottawa has interest, but I think they will have to wait to see if he ends up a UFA this summer. I believe he will want to go to a team with a chance to win a Cup this year before committing to a new contract.

It would be nice if Ottawa could get a guy like him without having to trade, even though they are up against that Cap just with two D-men already at 8m and Chychrun likely commanding the same when he becomes a UFA.

As it is… I could see Tanev ending up back in Vancouver for this run.

  4. It is great for the NHL to see WPG and VAN upgrading

  5. Monahan’s list of injuries and surgeries is staggering . He is playing well but the extended warranty has run out.
Let’s hope he can handle the playoff grind. Good salary to absorb and not a big financial risk. A great fit if he remains healthy. Jets hope the first turns out to be more like a second

TD should still be active .

    • Ya S7, it’s crazy how many he had and he’s only 29. He put up some goals and points playing with J Hockey, and then got thrown onto the damaged goods scrap pile. Calgary paid to get rid of him.

It’s a good story, now that he’s in WPG I can root for him, for a little while anyway.
