The Anaheim Ducks trade goaltender John Gibson to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for goaltender Petr Mrazek, a 2026 second-round pick and a 2027 fourth-round pick.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Gibson, 31, had been a fixture in the trade-rumor mill for the past two seasons. The sticking point had been his contract with its $6.4 million average annual value. However, he has only two years remaining on his deal. With the salary cap rising significantly over that period, his contract became more palatable for a club like the Red Wings, which went through five goalies last season.

Gibson will be expected to help the Red Wings end their franchise-record nine-year playoff drought. He’s spent the past several seasons backstopping the rebuilding Ducks, but with a potentially more competitive team in front of him in Detroit, he has a chance to prove he’s still a reliable starting goalie.

This move solidifies Lukas Dostal as the Ducks’ starting goaltender. The 25-year-old had outplayed Gibson for the job last season. Mrazek will support him in the backup role.

The Ottawa Senators acquire defenseman Jordan Spence from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for a third-round pick in 2025 and a sixth-round pick in 2026.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Senators were in the market for a right-shot defenseman to replace Nick Jensen, who recently underwent hip surgery with no timeline for his return. Spence, 24, carries an affordable $1.5 million cap hit for 2025-26. He netted 28 points in 79 games last season with the Kings.

The Calgary Flames signed defenseman Kevin Bahl to a six-year contract with an average annual value of $5.35 million.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Bahl was acquired from the New Jersey Devils as part of the return in the Jacob Markstrom trade. He quickly established himself among their top-four blueliners, logging over 21 minutes of ice time per game.

  1. A good deal for Ottawa, a short term replacement for Jensen and later a really good depth dman at a good price. Not much of a return for Gibson considering the lack of goalies on the market right now

    • Yeah, just saw that Yogi – coming at us fast and furious (lol) – I guess he’s the first Australian-born hockey player to make the NHL so that makes Spence kind of unique. Not huge -5′ 11″ 180lbs – but apparently solid who played 79 games with L.A. this past season with 4g 24a 28 pts and a +23.

Their depth at RD now includes Zub, Spence, Yakemchuk, Matinpalo and Thomson, with Jensen due back early in the new season.

      • And there’s talk now that Staios could try and sign UFA Tanner Jeannot from L.A.

      • The couple of times I saw him, he looked decent George. I like the pickup, I would’ve liked it better if Treliving had made the move

      • Having an extra bit of toughness wouldn’t hurt, but I’m not sure where he’d fit in the lineup. He seemed to be wearing out his welcome in L.A. If you can get him on the cheap then they could just bury the contract if there’s no fit

      • George, first Australian is Nathan Walker of the Blues.

      • Yogi, that fiasco must have been doubly boring for Leafs fans yesterday with no action in Round 1. I kept expecting to see Treleving get involved throughout with a trade announcement of some sort.

Where Ottawa is concerned, Staios is now committed to 18 (9F, 8D and 1G with just $9,251,786 to sign 5. With little to no chance that UFA G Forsberg will be back, the priority is now Leevi Merilainen who has no arbitration rights and is coming off an ELC of $820,000. He’ll likely get a bridge at around $1.7 which would leave Staios with around $7.5 to sign 4 – including Claude Giroux, whose $6.5 mil deal is expiring.

The hope is, he and his agent (Brisson) will conceded that, if John Tavares can sign for $4,3898,420 after a season of 38g 36a 74 pts at age 34, then the soon-to-be 38 y/o Giroux, also with Brisson, should not balk at something closer to $3 mil. Even then, Staios would be down to around $4 mil to sign 3 … and he apparently wants to keep around $1.5 in cap wiggle room.

So it would seem there’s another trade to come, and with the acquisition of Spence (and the eventual return of Jensen) that could be RD Artem Zub and his $4.6 mil per cap hit (2 seasons to run).

      • You know George, I’m out fishing for the next month. Not a tv within 10 miles and I’m glad because I would’ve sat through that like everybody else. I knew Treliving would be quiet, weak draft and the cupboards are bare, unless he was trading Matthews, but that’s next year

      • Enjoy … and if you’re after bass I hope you get a biggie

  2. Thanks, Snold 49, I tried searching for info on that but couldn’t find anything … probably the wording I used in the search.

  3. Gibson is better than Mrazek. But acquiring Petr should never have happened!
Y now has 7 goalies in the system and another 4 drafted prospects for a total of 11
Y should be treated for his goalie fetish!!!!
Kinda reminds me of people filling a shopping cart with toilet paper. (not for the same use, but goalies on the shelve may grow stale and lose value)

    • It’s funny too, since most of the Cups he won featured a backup in net. You’d think he’d go cheap.

  4. Golden Knights, Maple Leafs Discussing Mitch Marner Trade
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the Vegas Golden Knights and Toronto Maple Leafs are in active negotiations for a sign-and-trade deal that would see Mitch Marner end up in Nevada. Friedman followed up on the initial report, stating that forward Nicolas Roy is expected to be part of the return to Toronto if a deal is finalized. A few moments later, TSN’s Bruce Garrioch reported that the Maple Leafs requested defenseman Nicolas Hague in the return as well.

    • No surprise Mitchy Marner wants play for Golden Knights and Golden Knights want Marner. Question is make cap work who else either leaving Golden Knights (going on LTIR) besides Nicolas Roy (Nicolas Hague RFA wasn’t returning).

    • Darren Dredger is the source of the story. Friedman’s just predicting Vegas is where Marner will end up. Bissenette says Vegas is being investigated for tampering concerning Marner, might explain the sudden interest in a sign and trade, if that’s true. Also Bissenette says Marchand has a deal in place with Toronto and yes the NHL is investigatlng that too.

      • Check out Marchands Wiki page

      • Yeah that’s beaut, no wonder the NHL is investigating. He’d be an improvement over Marner, at least in the playoffs.

      • I donated 10 bucks to Wilkes

    • Vegas should give zip and just sign Marner for 7. Would give a nhl player for his rights especially when you are his choice destination

      • At 8 years the cap hit is probably going to be lower than 7 and a sign and trade might get Vegas out of a tampering charge if the rumours are right

      • I’m not sure a player expressing obvious interest first, then a team reciprocating said interest is really tampering. Now, if there are background negotiations going in already between him and VGK, that’s different — but I think we all know what he’s getting, so all of that would be pretty much unnecessary.

  5. Players and teams are not allowed to talk before the free agency period actually begins, thus the tampering charges. The reason Vegas wants to do a trade is because they must shed a lot of salary to be able to fit Marner under the salary cap.
