NHL Rumor Mill – September 4, 2025
Check out the latest on Ducks center Mason McTavish and Wild winger Kirill Kaprizov in today’s NHL Rumor Mill.
RG.ORG: James Murphy wondered if the NHL trade market for a second-line center would pick up with all general managers and coaches gathered in Detroit for meetings this week.
An NHL executive told Murphy he’s not sure, but he indicated that talks are picking up again. “I just think there are more buyers than sellers still,” he said.

Anaheim Ducks center Mason McTavish? (NHL Images)
The biggest name remains center Mason McTavish of the Anaheim Ducks. A restricted free agent, McTavish remains unsigned with training camp two weeks away. However, an NHL executive told Murphy that there is no indication of an impasse between the 22-year-old center and Ducks management.
According to Murphy’s sources, Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek has not yet signaled to his peers that he’s shopping McTavish.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Verbeek and the McTavish camp have kept their contract talks out of the media for the most part. Nevertheless, Ducks beat writer Eric Stephens of The Athletic reported last month that the club wants to sign McTavish, claiming the two sides had exchanged several different contract proposals.
Marco Rossi of the Minnesota Wild (who recently signed a three-year contract), Jared McCann of the Seattle Kraken, Nazem Kadri of the Calgary Flames, and Boston Bruins forwards Casey Mittelstadt and Pavel Zacha have been mentioned as possible trade candidates. However, the executive told Murphy that he wondered which ones were really available.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Wild didn’t sign Rossi with the intention of trading him. McCann has spent most of his tenure with the Kraken as a winger. Kadri has a full no-movement clause and hasn’t requested a trade, nor are the Flames interested in moving him.
Mittelstadt and/or Zacha could be available later this season if the Bruins fail to rebound from their disappointing 2024-25 campaign. For now, it’s unlikely either one will be moved.
THE ATHLETIC: Joe Smith reports Minnesota Wild owner Craig Leipold said his club wasn’t that far off from getting winger Kirill Kaprizov signed to a contract extension.
The 28-year-old superstar is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent next July. His average annual value on his current contract is $9 million.
Contract extension talks have been ongoing during the summer, but the lack of a deal thus far has raised some speculation about his future with the Wild.
“I kind of think we’re there,” Leipold said. “I like to believe when Kirill comes over and gets a sense again for the excitement and the love of the city, I think we’ll be moving in a good direction”.
Leipold is prepared to open the vault for Kaprizov. “This will be a huge deal, likely the biggest in the NHL ever,” he said.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Bleacher Report’s Frank Seravalli believes the AAV for Kaprizov’s next contract will be in the $15 million range. Smith’s colleague, Michael Russo, said he’s heard it could go as high as $16 million. The only question is whether he’ll want the maximum deal or a shorter term.
Hey Murphy! Training camp is starting in a little more than a week and McTavish is not yet signed. Is that not at least a slight indication of an impasse?
Well, he and 5 other RFAs – Hughes in NJ, Evangelista in Nashville, Kaiser in Chicago, Zary in Calgary and Holtz in Vegas.
On another note, all this Kaprizov chatter involving an “imminent” contract in the $15/$16 mil range is most likely at the root of a delay in getting McDavid’s signatures on a new contract, as he and his agent wait to see how that pans out.
But that won’t stop certain elements in the GTA-based media from open – hopeful? – speculation that McDavid has his eyes on Toronto, and so won’t sign an extension.
https://edmontonjournal.com/sports/hockey/nhl/cult-of-hockey/oilers-leafs-mcavid-contract-stauffer-rant
LOL. Gotta love it.
George, that article is 100% accurate. That’s why Edmontonian fans like myself and other hockey cities in Canada generally hate Toronto. The majority of them and the writers are stuck up.
Assuming McDavid doesn’t sign for Edmonton, Lyle is right. Why the heck would he sign for Toronto? It makes absolutely no sense. He’d go to an American market where the pressure is a lot less and are better positioned to win more than 1 round in the last decade. And this is coming from a Edmontonian fan living in Edmonton.
I’m not trying to rant on Toronto but anyone not living in Toronto know what I say is true. Every Torontonian assumes that the best Canadian players wants to play for Toronto. Not even Montreal does that and their fans are the most passionate I’ve ever seen.
Brian, I hear you … believe me. But as I keep reiterating in here whenever this pops up – it’s not the fault of the players and coaches (or GMs) that ARE part of the team.
I’ve often stated that the GTA media (often led by those regulars on Hockey Night In Canada) and local blogs are their own worst enemy with their annual pre-season over-hype of whatever roster changes have been made, as if those actions alone were the best of all 32 teams and will, propel them to great heights.
Doing that they infuse a large element of the fan base that doesn’t do much when it comes to being a “fan” other than cheer passionately for their team (can’t deny that) while buying the expensive paraphernalia and, if they can’t get a ticket, stand outside in rain or snow to cheer them on.
In that sense they are just as much a fan as any of us in here or similar discussion sites who tend to dig a lot deeper into things like roster make-up and on-ice performances and so adopt a more pragmatic approach in expectations.
But that’s no reason to hate the guys who are doing their best to reward the throngs. In many ways they too are victims of the media/blog operators.
Kaprizov should be less with an Average of 63 games played per season and a left winger. Too high at $16m way too high.
Keep in mind max LTIR relief is now $3.8 m. So when he goes down not much to work with . History says he will get hurt and miss time
Concur fully
I just typed a post that took a bit of time (some interruptions) so I started it before seeing your post (with similar thoughts). Sorry for the duplication
Pengy?
You caught that too, eh?
Agreed SilverSeven. I respect Kaprizov’s game, but every time this topic comes up I shake my head. I just don’t see him in that stratosphere.
Can someone explain the new LTIR rule . I could be wrong but looks like the 3 teams over the cap Vegas Montreal and Florida will still be over the cap even after they place there players on the LTIR if they only get 3.8 mill .
Just looking at the Price contract talk was between a second and third pick to be able to move it before what is worth now would have to be a first plus you would think. Hope I am wrong on that .
Any information would be great.
That rule doesn’t apply to players who will miss the entire season. The league will need to approve each scenario and the player will be a ineligible to play postseason.

Thanks Slick and Pat . This make sense to me . I like the rule for sure .
Leipold… great negotiation tactics; publicly stating : “This will be a huge deal, likely the biggest in the NHL ever”
Kaprizov’s Agent: “Thanks so much for pointing that out; since the vaults wide open, let’s make your dream come true”
I get that he’s their marquee player. I get that Cap is jumping in leaps and bounds. But :
-he’s going to start this next contract at 29
-he only played in 1/2 of Wild’s gamez last year; and only averaged 60 GP’s over the last 3 seasons
-he’s not the tallest of fellows
-he’s a winger not a Center
-his team is certainly not “destined” for deep cup runs
-$16 M buys two (2) top 6 wingers who would get more points/goals combined than he will individually
$16 M on him is just not prudent
8787
I don’t think Kaprizov gets 16m per. But, it’s really about what Minny is prepared to pay to keep him. What is he worth to them? He’s not a center, but they’re only paying 2 of their top centers a combined 10.5 over next 3 seasons. I think they combine for more points than McDavid so should Edmonton let him walk and get 2 cheaper centers? They have nearly 40 mil in cap space in 2026/27. As far as who deserves more, that goes out window every year cap goes up. There’s always going to be a new “highest paid”.
You are bang on re what he gets. He gets whatever Leipold signs off on (to Billy G)
I’m saying he’s not worth $16 M
I’m also saying that Leipold’s public statement literally leaves him no room for negotiation
There is a way to spin your utmost desire to keep a player AND simultaneously be able to have a 2-way negotiation; albeit already skewed in favor of the player
Saying publicly “This will be a huge deal, likely the biggest in the NHL ever” will in no way allow a 2-way negotiation
It does allow Billy G to hand a pre-signed contract to Kaprisov and ask him (Kaprisov) to fill in the blanks; LOL
8787
As far as his size? He’s listed at 5’10, which is about 2 inches less than league average for forwards. More importantly he’s a solid 200lbs which is league average. Using past injury history didn’t stop Vegas from trading for Eichel and won’t effect his next deal. E Karlsson got paid back when his previous 3 seasons he averaged 67 games
Correct again Slick re those points
Avg NHLer is 6’ 1/4” and 203; so he’s average in weight; id sturdy; but is short
True re Eichel injury and Vegas; but they (Knights) are a different breed when it comes to risks and moves but more importantly; Knights traded for him; but he signed that contract with Sabres
Yes re EK at 67 avg games (vs 60 Kaprisov) in previous 3 years and 51 previous season to big contract (EK) vs just 1/2 of 24/25 for Kaprisov
Any one of the above comparisons has validity in arguing higher contract for Kaprisov
But it isn’t just one of the above (shorter; Eichel injury and Knights trading for him; and comparison to games played previous year and previous 3 ); it’s all 3
AND it’s that he’s a W and not a C; and he’s on a team that is a few years climb to get to a cup
Add to that, McD is much more than s point producer ; he is the absolute best player on the planet; an ultimate needle mover
Kaprisov may or may not get $16 M from Leipold/Billy G
My argument is more that he’s not worth $16 M; and I’d be hard pressed to come up with another franchise that would even consider that much for Kaprisov
4 years at $16 M (if that’s the contract); means McD has to be worth max. : 4 @ $20.8 M
Yesterday there was some back and forth between Moegillknee and Jeff on the goaltending situation in Calgary with speculation as to whether or not the Flames should include Wolf in a deal with Anaheim. The one thing Calgary has going for them in terms of cap space taken up by certain players/positions is that, heading into a new season, the Flames spend far, far less on a pretty good goalie tandem than some teams do on their backup! The Wolf-Cooley tandem costs the Flames a grand total of $1,625,000 – dead last in those terms in the entire league (shown below with total cost and % of the cap – rounded off):
NYR Shesterkin-Quick $13,050,000 14%
Boston Swayman-Korpisalo $11,250,000 12%
Florida Bobrovsky-Tarasov $11,050,000 12%
NYI Sorokin-Varlamov $11,000,000 12%
Seattle Grubauer-Daccord $10,900,000 11%
Anaheim Dostal-Mrazec $10,750,000 11%
Tampa Vasilevsky-Johansson $10,750,000 11%
Vancouver Demko-Lankinen $9,500,000 10%
St. Louis Binnington-Hofer $9,400,000 9%
Winnipeg Hellebuyck-Comrie $9,325,000 10%
Ottawa Ullmark-Merilainen $9,300,000 9%
Dallas Oettinger-DeSmith $9,250,000 9%
Detroit Gibson-Talbot $8,900,000 9%
Washington Thompson-Lindgren $8,850,000 9%
Nashville Saros-Annunen $8,577,500 9%
Chicago Knight-Brossoit $7,800,000 8%
Los Angeles Kuemper-Forsberg $7,500,000 8%
Vegas Hill-Schmid $7,125,000 7%
Colorado Blackwood-Wedgewood $6,750,000 7%
Utah Vejmelka-Ingram $6,700,000 7%
Philadelphia Vladar-Fedotov $6,625,000 6%
Pittsburgh Jarry-Silovs $6,255,000 6%
Buffalo Lyon-Luukkonen $6,250,000 6%
Columbus Merzlikins-Greaves $6,212,500 6%
Toronto Woll-Stolarz $6,166,667 6%
Minnesota Gustavsson-Wallstedt $5,950,000 6%
New Jersey Markstrom-Allen – $5,925,000 6%
Carolina Anderssen-Kochetkov $4,750,000 5%
San Jose Nedejkovic-Askarov $4,500,000 5%
Montreal Montembeault-Kahkonen $4,300,000 5%
Edmonton Skinner-Pickard $3,600,000 4%
Calgary Wolf-Cooley $1,625,000 2%
Why would the Ducks want Wolf???? They have a good starter.
George no way Flames trade Wolf. Kid is the real deal. Won MVP awards in every league he’s played in & was runner up to rookie of the year in the NHL. Flames never ever move up in that draft lottery, but Wolf where they got him is a draft lottery win. Many rebuilding teams would do anything to get a young franchise goalie piece early in a rebuild. Wolf has changed Flames rebuild into truly a retool. If Parekh lives up to his billing, that could be their 2nd huge piece. They just need that #1 center.
Johnny Z and Potlicker – I totally agree on both your posts. It wasn’t me who suggested a deal with Anaheim – it was Moegillknee. I just mentioned it as a reference point for my observation on Calgary.
Having a very decent goalie tandem for the grand total of $1,625,000 – or just 2% of their cap – also gives them a lot more to spread around the rest of their roster than those teams up at the top of the list.
Actually my deal was with Carolina and not the Ducks.Hurricanes Andersen is 35 and ufa next yr. Their window is open now.
Calgary is not a contender with an aging team that needs to rebuild . Trading Wolf would help them get in the mckenna race. But only move him if your trading Kadri and rasmus Anderson
Yeah, sorry about that … don’t know why I typed in “Anaheim” when I knew you said Carolina. Brain fart combined with lack of double-checking before hitting submit.
McDavid on Leafs???
The logic isn’t there for him
Leafs got in their current stagnation having 50% of Cap spent on 4 forwards
McD on Leafs ; would for sure make close to mid 40’s % on 3 forwards
Leafs would be spending mid 30’s % on 2 centers
McDavid would be jumping from a 2 consecutive (perhaps 3??) SC appearances team; to a team that is still trying to get to Conference finals
He’d be uprooting and moving
He’d be saying good-bye to his entire Edmonton family (Fans, teammates, org) to join one whose public scrutiny is maniacal at best
He’d be ripping off the C and embracing Mathews as his Captain
and, how happy will Mathews be when his pushed aside to 2C to make room for McD
I just can’t imagine this scenario
I’m not saying that 100% McD will not move on from Oilers
I’m just saying that McD on Leafs does not make sense and is an extreme long shot
McDavid leaving in general is a long shot, although he has been very cautious to say anything like , I love this team, this city, this market, ot that he wants to be an oiler a long time etc. It sounds a lot like Marner – so until he signs- questions remain.
I think if he does leave he would be going to A) a big market team B) a team that already has stars – so he isnt going to a team that is captainless. I dont think anyone would have an issue stepping aside for Mcdavid, let alone Matthews. He makes any team an instant contender. I dont put much stock into “his wife opened a business- or he is friends with Leon”. Priorities change
I will get flack for this but remove him from the Oilers and they arent a serious contender. He hides alot of their flaws, the least of which is their goaltending. They arent particularly deep up front and the defense it was placed on many other teams wouldnt be considered solid.
Not trying to annoy Oiler fans- just saying – it happens and I think it will happen more and more (not necessarily with Mcdavid)
I think we are heading down a new path in the NHL where movement is much more fluid and contracts are much shorter.
Again I dont think he leaves but you can never account for a players desire or dream to play at home or in another big market.
“No one player makes any team an automatic contender lol none no one ever. Team sport buddy and how many years did Edm not make the playoffs? Wham McD was already there? That’s just foolish to say
Leafs wouldnt have had an issue committing all that salary to a few players if they had carried them like McDavid and Draisatl did AND if they cap hadnt frozen. I think if 97 is available every team makes an exception to their line of thinking
Let’s be honest here, Connor McDavid will be playing at Madison Square Garden sooner rather than later. Good for the league if he goes and plays in a big Eastern Market, Los Angeles would be ideal too if he wants to remain out west.

Seems from the following articles; that Flyers are in wait, hoping for a Hart eligibility memo
I still say Oilers should be on this for sure.
One article below claims Flyers prepared to outbid everybody else for Hart
Again, re any Oiler potential push-back? Precedents set with Bowman, Perry, Kane, Virtannen; and never forget , a murderer (convicted and 1 year in Jail): McTavish
https://nhltradetalk.com/flyers-set-to-out-offer-another-team-in-carter-hart-return/
https://thehockeynews.com/nhl/philadelphia-flyers/latest-news/report-flyers-interested-in-carter-hart-reunion
https://www.nhltraderumors.me/2025/09/predicting-several-teams-carter-hart.html
https://www.hockeyfeed.com/nhl-news/contingent-plan-of-action-exposed-to-get-carter-hart-back-in-the-nhl
8787, you keep bringing up comparisons between someone in Hart’s position and “faceless” people like Bowman and MacTavish.
The PRIME difference is, the vast majority of even the most vociferous-type of fan around the league wouldn’t know or recognize either one if they tripped over them.
Not so with Hart and the other 4 who either have to skate around and sit on a bench or stand in a goal crease mere feet from the hordes with their names emblazoned across their shoulders.
As for Virtanen, last I looked he hasn’t played 1 minute in the NHL since 2020-21 while Perry and Kane, while certainly involved in controversy over the course of their careers to date, never were involved in anything so repulsive as the Horny 5 irregardless of their acquittal of a crime!
They try and come back and they’ll hear it … loudly, and I think both the NHL and NHLPA realize this.
Faceless people like McTavish??
He played 8 seasons, 700 regular season games, 100 playoff games, and 3 cups for Oilers
How is that faceless?
Re Virtanen; his skill set didn’t make the team but Oilers DID sign him to a PTO
I stand by my assertion of precedents set by that handful as being hired after public dismay/outcry/anguish/whatever over behaviour (2 of which were guilty; one of killing someone while impaired; the other of covering up for a repeated rapist)
Carter , like the other 4 were found not only not guilty; but concluded and stated by judge to actually have received consent
Those who might argue that Pickard NOW is better than Hart NOW; that’s a fair challenge for debate.
I say Let them battle it out in camp/pre-season; winner stays with Oilers ; loser waived to AHL or perhaps they keep 3 goalies on the roster (other teams have done this in the past)
Trust me, he no longer looks like his playing days. In civvies with no name spread across his back and not mere feet from the braying public night in night out, he might as well be “faceless.”
Virtinane – big whoop. And it wouldn’t surprise me to see that he never even got into an actual pre-=season game during that P.T.O.
Quit picking nits. If any get on the ice in an actual game – especially on the road – they will be targets,
Google the question ‘Did Jake Virtanen receive any public flak during his P.T.O in Edmonton” and you get this:
“Yes, Jake Virtanen received significant criticism, or “flak,” during his Edmonton Oilers PTO, particularly from advocates for victims of sexual assault, after the team signed him to the agreement. The backlash stemmed from the timing of the PTO signing, which occurred after Virtanen was found not guilty of sexual assault in July 2022, a decision that drew parallels to the broader Hockey Canada scandal.”
And this
https://ca.sports.yahoo.com/news/nhl-oilers-sign-jake-virtanen-why-people-upset-by-move-124701689.html
Then tell me there would be no backlash to bringing Carter into the fold – or any of the others?
George,
First of all, sorry for the late response; I wanted to make sure my wife and daughters were ok with what I am saying below. Had to wait until I got home and I’m running it by them first.
You and I were 100% on the same page pre-trial. 100%
After literally following everything ; day in and day out; throughout the trial; I’ve done a 180. COMPLETE 180.
They were found not guilty; AND DID actually receive consent (Judge went out of her way to state that; she could have said “prosecution failed to prove that consent was not given”).
Judge put strong emphasis on, and emphatically stated (per several reporters) that EM’s testimony was NOT credible and was NOT reliable.
Formenton literally did nothing wrong. Zip, Zilch, Zero , wrong. Nada!
AFTER going to HIS room (shared room with McLeod) ; and after witnessing a young woman (NOTE more than 2 years older than him, he was the youngest of all of them) doing things to herself and literally asking anybody in the room to have relations with her and accusing them of being “p?&$@ies” if they didn’t; and then after that she leads him (Formenton) into the bathroom for consensual acts; that is doing absolutely nothing wrong. Nothing at all wrong.
You should have this debate with my wife and four eldest daughters. You’d be debating until the cows came home. Not exaggerating at all here. Their 180s came with anger and awe!
They want the 5 to sue her for not only every penny she got in the lawsuit; but for all the potential money the 5 lost out on; AND millions more in punitive damages.
They want her to publicly apologize
They’d love it if her actual name was published
My wife is literally apoplectic about this.
To be repetitive and clear; she (as well as my eldest 4 daughters) was convinced their guilt (pre-trial) and was very vocal (re their guilt pre-trial) about the whole situation
We (myself, my wife, our eldest 4 daughters) bought into (wrongfully so) the whole narrative given out pre-trial. It was only being told by one side.
Our bad on that one. Our very bad on that one.
We do understand that some will still push back. However, we firmly believe that anybody who has read all the daily summaries, will not be the ones taunting these players when they return.
I, my wife, our teenage daughters would have no issues meeting any of these 5. Also, if any of these 5 were to reach out to shake our hands; we would not pull our hands away or turn our backs.
I believe we just may have trepidation with MacTavish reaching out his hand though.
The full post above has been read and approved by my wife (50 next week) and our 2 sets of teen twin daughters (16 and 17)
Thanks for the aricle George
We just read it
As it points out : Holland weighed the potential pushback rationalizing per article ““You’ve gotta believe in the legal system, the jury found him not guilty,” Oilers general manager Ken Holland said.”
His talent and performance while on PTO ( just like many on PTOs) didn’t end up warranting an NHL contract
From the article it also points out criticism was more directed at Virtanen’s lawyer and his treatment (on the stand) of the young women
The cited (in the article) critic of the outcome is the CEO of Sexual Assault Center of Edmonton.
The article goes on to discuss guilty beyond a reasonable doubt vs innocence.
There in lies a huge (massive) difference between the Virtanen case and the 5 world Juniors case.
Both cases found NG
However, Virtanen’s case didn’t have a ruling that spanned hours that stated the young woman DID actually provide consent; and most importantly ; that her testimony was NOT credible and NOT reliable.
George
I cede that you will not change your mind on this. I encourage you to read the complete daily summaries from all the sources. They are lengthy, but detail out all testimony.
We fully believe that if you do; you may not flip 180; but do feel you will soften your stance on guilt.
We were 100% with you pre-trial.
After following the trial in full; in dizzying detail; we flipped completely. Completely.
They are not only NOT GUILTY, but completely innocent of those charges.
This literally would never have seen the light of day had EM been truthful with her mother right at the beginning. One lie spiralled into many many many others; got political; and s wasteful trial ensued.
These players have wrongfully lost millions and millions
The ALL should be reinstated immediately.
Again, my wife and two sets of teenage daughters have read this post above and approve of its wording in its entirety
For what it’s worth – and again you’ve missed my point – I’ll try and make it as concise as possible.
I am NOT – nor ever have been – disputing the fact that they were tried and (as also mentioned in one of those links) found not guilty ” based on the concept that the prosecution did not prove their guilt “beyond a reasonable doubt” – and in the Virtanen case Holland admitted he would have to struggle with his own conscience.
My point was – and will remain – that it is NOT worth the aggravation for the teams – not to mention themselves – that will follow those young men if and when they are put out there with their names prominent on the jerseys so that even the most obtuse of the “angry types” can single them out (and they WILL).
Hart goes to Detroit to complete Yzerman’s goalie collection! Book it! 😉👍
Hmm.
Stinky topic.
Can of worms for any team. Any of those players. Precedents or no.
Would I love to see Formenton in the A for Belleville? Sure. Maybe. Kinda.
People deserve second chances for bad decisions. But some of these individuals don’t seem to realise the entitled lives they live/lived. One in particular, who was the only to deliver a verbal defense. Was a nicely polished story.
If I owned a billion dollar hockey club. I would not pursue these players.
Mittelstadt has turned into a mediocre center at best. Who will want him, now or in the future?
At $5,750,000 as a cap hit for a career average of 15 goals per 82 games played – not many.
Doesn’t hit anyone and is average at best in the faceoff dot. Not the kind of guy you want on your playoff team.
Any team who signs McDavid as a UFA or trades for him will have to shed stars just to get his salary within the cap. The teams he would like to play for would all be at the top of the cap.
I think he would need to go to team that has a lot of potential and young. i.e. Utah or Montreal.
McDavid goes to play with Sidney Crosby for his last year or 2 and then carries the star touch in Pittsburgh. The Pens with have the money and cap room. Instant rebuild!!!! I doubt it would ever happen but it sounds good!
