NHL Rumor Mill – March 6, 2026
The trade deadline is 3 pm ET today. Check out the latest rumors as the deadline approaches
UPDATES ON VINCENT TROCHECK AND ALEXIS LAFRENIERE
NEW YORK POST: A high number of teams in playoff contention has allowed teams like the Rangers to drive up the asking prices for Trocheck and defenseman Braden Schneider.
THE ATHLETIC: The Minnesota Wild’s interest in Trocheck has faded due to what Rangers general manager Chris Drury wants in return. The Carolina Hurricanes and Detroit Red Wings could also have an interest in the Rangers center.

The Wild could shift their focus toward Charlie Coyle of the Columbus Blue Jackets and Ryan O’Reilly of the Nashville Predators. Centers such as Robert Thomas of the St. Louis Blues, Elias Pettersson of the Vancouver Canucks, and Nazem Kadri of the Calgary Flames are simply too expensive for the Wild
MONTREAL HOCKEY NOW: TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reports the Montreal Canadiens have checked in on Trocheck. However, the asking price could be too big a haul for them.
THE ATHLETIC: The Rangers are unlikely to move Alexis Lafreniere, but questions linger about his future amid concerns over how the club has developed its young talent.
WHO COULD THE RED WINGS TARGET?
DETROIT HOCKEY NOW: Defensemen linked to the Red Wings include Justin Faulk of the St. Louis Blues, Oliver Ekman-Larsson of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and Rasmus Ristolainen of the Philadelphia Flyers.
Forwards such as Trocheck, Elias Pettersson of the Vancouver Canucks, and Robert Thomas of the St. Louis Blues could be on their radar.
JORDAN KYROU COULD BE TOO EXPENSIVE FOR THE ISLANDERS
NEW YORK POST: Ethan Sears believes St. Louis Blues winger Jordan Kyrou could provide an offensive boost to the New York Islanders, assuming he’d waive his no-trade clause. However, the asking price could cost them a couple of top prospects, such as Kashawn Aitcheson and Victor Eklund, or promising forward Cal Ritchie.
COULD JONATHAN MARCHESSAULT BE THE NEXT PLAYER SHOPPED BY THE PREDATORS?
THE TENNESSEAN: Trade speculation is starting to swirl about Jonathan Marchessault, but he’s not keen to leave the Nashville Predators. He reminded reporters that he has a full no-movement clause but declined to say if he discussed the situation with GM Barry Trotz.
DEVILS STILL LISTENING TO OFFERS FOR SIMON NEMEC
TSN: Pierre LeBrun reports the New Jersey Devils continue to entertain offers for Simon Nemec. The 22-year-old defenseman is due to become a restricted free agent this summer. The Devils will only move him if they get a return that improves their top-six forwards.
WILL THE HURRICANES SIT OUT THIS DEADLINE?
THE HOCKEY NEWS: The Carolina Hurricanes made significant moves during the last two trade deadlines. However, the exorbitant asking prices for players such as Robert Thomas and Vincent Trocheck could force them to stand pat or consider making low-cost depth additions.
POTENTIAL CANUCKS TRADE CANDIDATES
THE PROVINCE: Forwards Teddy Blueger, Evander Kane, and David Kampf could be among the players the Vancouver Canucks attempt to trade today. Others could include forwards Brock Boeser, Elias Pettersson, and defenseman Marcus Pettersson.
PENGUINS EYEING A REUNION WITH TEDDY BLUEGER
THE ATHLETIC: Josh Yohe reports league sources claim the Pittsburgh Penguins are considering a deal with the Vancouver Canucks to bring back center Teddy Blueger to help them in the faceoff circle.
Max Shabanov for AJ Greer would be a good get.
Shabanov for just about anyone would be a good move. He is to small and not good along the boards.Take Duclair and Druoin with him. I hope Darche see’s the light and move out Lee and JGP as well both have value but unless Sorokin stands on his head the team is only average. Build for 2 years out surround Schaefer with a lot of young players and the team has a chance to win. Can they get a first plus for JGP and a 2nd plus for Lee? With these GM’s giving away picks and prospects why not.
Would love to see Blue back in the ‘Burgh
Despite a decent showing for Finland at the Olympics, it seems 6′ 3″ 215lb 27y/o RD Nikolas Matinpalo, essentially a stay-at-home D-first-type, is not in the picture for Ottawa as he continues to be a healthy scratch. Since he apparently still has options, why is he not in Belleville, staying sharp? Being a RD, he could be one on the move today.
During an in game interview, Jackets GM Don Waddell stated that “this team needs to stay together”. The Jackets are buyers (note the Conor Garland trade), not sellers. And Waddell may yet surprise us with another roster boosting trade.
It looks like Sweeney is about to do something based on this news flash from their farm team.
PROVIDENCE BRUINS RECALL BROOKLYN KALMIKOV FROM MARINERS, SIGN CHRISTOPHER BROWN TO PTO
https://www.providencebruins.com/post/providence-bruins-recall-brooklyn-kalmikov-from-mariners-sign-christopher-brown-to-pto
The big question, is it a roster player being replaced by a Providence Bruin, or a prospect from the farm team?
Time will tell.
Cheers.
looks like binnington is going to be traded at deadline. do u think st louis would take merzlinking or greaves plus ceulmans voronkov and johnson for either thomas or kyrou. just curious if not what would everybody think cbj would have to give st louis for either thomas or kyrou
Wonder if STL would want Ellis back from the Sabres? They will need someone, if Binnington is sent away.
Toronto St Pats, they will need a backup in a trade involving Binnington for sure. And wouldn’t it be ironic if the Blues had to give up a pick for a guy they already had and released him. As well as further embarrassment to Armstrong.
Parayko has seemed to take all air out of the Blues sails. What could have started a major quick rebuilding process has become more like a funeral.
Stay the course. Waddle will fill in the gaps with the appropriate people. I wouldn’t meddle too much. Its a real good team coming together at the right time.
Maybe reunite with my pal, Bob from Florida?
Waddel already said Coyle isn’t available, and the Blue Jackets are heavy in the playoff chase, why would they trade a key piece?
A Risto replacement has been found! Jiresak headed to Philly for Brink. Billy G making more headway!
It will be really interesting to see how deep the Sabres can go , as per this years playoffs !
Logan Stanley and Schenn , new additions , ideal playoff players
Talk about a Cinderella team !!
NYR: Drury holding tight I think in deal with Wild he wants Yurov. Seems like Carolina might be favorite to land him now. Don’t have to trade him, but a playoff contender more likely to overpay now. Small detail… his 12 team ntc drops to 10 teams in the summer. Lafreniere has 9 points in last 10 games. A lot of talk he’s played better with Panarin gone. Tended to defer to him. Can’t see NY trading him unless it’s part of package for a stud in offseason. (Brady T, Jason Robertson, Thomas, Kyrou etc…)
I wouldn’t mind this trade. It might actually help the Cats next year.
Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin calls John Carlson trade the saddest day of his career
Maybe Ovi does not re-sign for a year with the Caps unless they bring his buddy John back……….
Better than seeing a close buddy shipped off to the Ukraine front.
