Check out the latest on possible changes for the Maple Leafs, Rangers, and Devils in today’s NHL Rumor Mill.

THE LATEST ON THE MAPLE LEAFS

TORONTO SUN: Lance Hornby reports former Arizona Coyotes general manager John Chayka and Dallas Stars assistant GM Scott White are reportedly emerging as the finalists for the job of Maple Leafs general manager.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports White and Chayka are subject to further diligence, with Chayka holding an edge.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Hornby acknowledged Chayka’s messy departure from the Coyotes, but pointed out that he’s done ground-breaking analytics work, which would suit the Maple Leafs’ search for a data-driven general manager.

Terry Koshan believes the first order of business for whoever becomes the next Maple Leafs general manager is speaking with team captain Austin Matthews about the club’s plans going forward and what his role would be.

If Matthews balks at those plans, Koshan believes the Maple Leafs must trade him. The 28-year-old superstar center could fetch a return of top draft picks, top prospects, or players who are either stars or on the cusp of becoming ones.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: We already know that Leafs ownership wants to retool the roster rather than stage a rebuild. How that retooling will be done will be of interest to Matthews because it will determine the outcome of next season and of his decision whether to sign a contract extension next summer.

THE ATHLETIC: Jonas Siegel recently examined which Maple Leafs will go and which ones will stay this summer.

Among the notables most likely to move are forwards Max Domi and Nick Robertson, and defensemen Brandon Carlo and Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

WHICH RANGERS COULD BE MOVED THIS SUMMER?

THE ATHLETIC: Peter Baugh and Vincent Z. Mercogliano looked at some of the biggest questions facing the New York Rangers during the offseason.

What happens to Vincent Trocheck topped the list. Rangers GM Chris Drury attempted to move the 32-year-old center at last month’s trade deadline, but found the offers were restricted by limited buyers and limited salary-cap space. Drury believes the market for Trocheck will improve in the offseason.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It’ll be surprising if Trocheck isn’t moved this summer. There was genuine interest in him at the trade deadline, especially from Eastern Conference teams that were not on his no-trade list.

Braden Schneider could also be moved. The 24-year-old defenseman is valued within the organization for his defensive skills, but the need for right-shot blueliners around the league could make him a valuable trade piece.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Schneider recently said he’d love to remain a Ranger, but he seems resigned to his fate. Mercogliano stated that Drury is seeking a scoring forward and could target a team like the San Jose Sharks, who have plenty of young forwards but need blueline depth.

Alexis Lafreniere’s strong finish to this season should ensure he remains with the Rangers. Moving him wouldn’t make sense for a club that’s looking for forward depth. Mercogliano doesn’t rule out Lafreniere being moved as part of a trade package if a top trade target becomes available, but he thinks the young winger will be staying put.

WHAT CHANGES COULD BE IN STORE FOR THE DEVILS?

NEW JERSEY HOCKEY NOW: James Nichols recently looked at what might be in store for the New Jersey Devils under new GM Sunny Mehta.

It remains to be seen if head coach Sheldon Keefe will be back, but the fact that he was in attendance at Mehta’s introductory press conference suggests he could return behind the Devils’ bench next season.

Mehta must decide what happens with defenseman Dougie Hamilton, who has been the subject of frequent trade speculation since last summer. He could decide to move Hamilton and his $9 million cap hit, or see his 28 points in his last 37 games of this season and decide he’s worth retaining.

Whatever happens to Hamilton could determine Simon Nemec’s fate. The young blueliner is coming off his entry-level contract. He’s earned praise for his offense, but his defense game needs improvement.

Nichols also wondered whether Mehta will retain or trade the Devils’ 2026 first-round pick. He also mused about how aggressive the new GM will be to improve the roster, such as pursuing a big-name player like Brady Tkachuk of the Ottawa Senators or Jason Robertson of the Dallas Stars if they were to become available.

Mehta must also open contract extension talks with team captain Nico Hischier, who is UFA eligible next July.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Mehta’s coming into his new job with a lot on his plate. It will be interesting to see what he’s got in store for the Devils this summer.

  1. Stop with the Brady trade talk. He’s not going anywhere while the Sens are on an upward or positive trajectory.

Now…when he hits the last year of this contract, and if the Sens aren’t in a playoff spot, watch out. But you can say that about any youngish player with an expiring contract in the league. And that includes the other key Sens, Timmy S. and Sanderson.

    • If Sens get swept the trade chatter will get louder. If Ottawa can get a package like Vancouver got for Hughes it could benefit them. With Floridas asst GM now in charge in NJ, maybe a deal like Florida made for Brady’s brother? Hischier plus for Tkachuk?

      • If … when … they get swept I’m sure there will be changes coming in the off-season. But I doubt Tkachuk will be among them.

Up front I can see them attempting to move out Cozens or Pinto from the C aspect and maybe even Stutzle IF the return is considerable. And one or more could be made before the draft to bring in high picks in this draft.

      • I agree , the only option for Ottawa is to trae Tkachuk, first of all beside trying to fight he is certainly not the right player to be captain; the boatload Ottawa can get for him would certainly fill the holes and push them further ahead faster
The head shot on Sanderson is another joke for a league that is serious on getting away form head shots…should of been minimum 3 games

  2. Wonder if NJ would trade Hamilton for a guy like Faulk, whose cap hit is $6.5M, straight up, just to save $2.5M in cap and a year less on that contract.
I would think so. That would get them to be able to offer Nemec a long-term contract at $8M AAV.

    • Doesn’t make more sense and show more of your knowledge of the league/game to point out players that would improve your team than constantly pointing out players not fitting in? Like isn’t something that’s not working or is not optimal easy to spot whereas finding a missing puzzle not only more fun and interesting but also more fun to read about?

Talking about players who will go and who will stay is s#itty writing and lazy work. For example, if your team has a defenseman playing too high up in the lineup or is lacking a solid number 2, it would be nice if fans can read more about who the team should be eyeing vs, this sucks and should be shown the door? We kinda know who isn’t working out but we usually overlook how or who to get to fix it. When you look at teams like the Avs, Knights, and Panthers, you can’t help but think that’s their MO. See what guys will improve your team and get him, not look at your team and see what you can get for a player or look at players to move off of.

      Rant end.

      • OK, what has that got to do with anything I said??

      • No idea why it posted under yours. It took a while to show up so I never saw it until now…funny tho. makes no sense.

    • Nemec will like ly get a bridge deal for about 4 mil. (absolute tops) Simon Nemec will never make 8 mil per season in his lifetime. Nor should he.

Where do folks come up with these numbers?

      • AFP Analytics predicts the new contract with quite a bit of accuracy.
        7x$8.3M or 2x $4.3M are their predictions
yes, your # is close for a bridge
and my # is close for long term

  3. BUYER BEWARE
I’ve been watching the playoffs and conclude, this summer is buyer beware on veteran players. The younger players have dominated play in the playoffs. There is going to be a big change in hockey in the future with the younger players. It is time for many of our favorites to ride off into the sunset.

  4. 1st up for NYR is the lottery. Just over a week away, winning MCKenna sweepstakes could fill a top 6 spot next year. I like Trochek but seems like a forgone conclusion he’ll be dealt.
BJs, Pens, Wings and Sabres imo top landing spots. Lafreniere was in rumors when value was lowest. Could see him still being dealt for right price. Would be a more affordable option for Dallas than signing J Robertson. How much more would Stars want though? Pretty sure Drury would go all in for Brady if he became available. Not sure how I’d feel about that. Would assume Laf would be part of deal. Might have to throw in Cuylle who plays similar style.

  5. Why are the Rangers trading Schneider and Trocheck again ? Because they are flush with D and Center men and would like to finish lower than 3rd last

  6. Surely Jonas Seigal is as aware as the rest of us that the decision has already been made in Toronto – regardless of who comes in as GM – that a re-tool is the plan moving forward and not a re-build.

So, to that end, why does he think they’re likely to move out Domi, Robertson, Carlo and Ekmann-Larsson? It’s not like they are going to get anything immediately better than any of them in deals – assuming they can even find takers beyond those teams identified in the MNTC held by all but Robertston.

    • I guess Domi wasnt very good, Robertson faded, OEL will get you something younger and Carlo hasnt fit in.

      Just guesses

      • I’m not disagreeing with your assessment Kent … but if the intent is a re-tool only, then moving those particular players is not going to bring back anything better who could step into the line-up immediately. Which is the intent of a re-tool, I would think.

    • Disagree George,

anything they get in return would be better than keeping Domi.
Water bottles, bundle of sticks, bag of picks…discount card to local dollar store….all better than Domi. He’s a complete slug. He just takes a roster spot that could be used for some of all that high end talent Wickenheiser has “developed”.

Only Toronto media types that get paid for professional b*llwashing think Robertson is anything more than a spare part.

  7. Regarding the Jonas Siegel article…if he’s suggesting that Carlo and OEL should move along, why didn’t Toronto take the rumoured 1st round pick for OEL?

Completely agree that Domi should be gone. An added bonus to moving him would be to remove the idea of his dad joining the management team.

Will be interesting for the Leafs this off-season, especially his the draft lottery plays out.

If the new GM were to convince upper management that moving their two biggest stars, Matthews and Nylander, along with getting a top 5 pick in this year’s draft, could conceivably see the Leafs re-tool with youth.

  8. Same old end of season speculation by beat writers with nothing factual to talk about. Brady T is NOT the problem in Ottawa. Matthews is Not the Problem in Toronto. OEL has already planted his flag with staying in Toronto at the deadline. It is VERY doubtful that the Leafs would get better offers in the summer.
Domi fills a role, though his inconsistency makes his salary a little too generous. (Who exactly wants to trade for that?) Certainly not much chance of a fair return unless the Leafs eat salary. If they eat salary and try to replace Domi, I think they end up paying more in total for a less versatile player. Another Aube-Kubel? Noah Gregor? “Your name here” type guy.

Carlo, I can see being moved, as his upside is low and his health is unreliable, BUT his replacement is NOT likely to be a noticable improvement. He is essentially a higher paid Philippe Meyers who is more defensively responsible.

Robertson, has finally shown steady play and hints at reaching his potential as a sniper if he can get better line-mates on a nightly basis. His salary ask is unlikely to be unreasonable. Unless you have a trade partner who believes Robertson’s potential is worth over-paying, a GM would be wasting money by letting him walk.

How about Ottawa avoid pulling a “Toronto” and dumping their most productive player.
How about Toronto fans and media wait and see who is in charge of team moves before they start trying to read their minds?

  9. Jonas doesn’t have a clue I try and listen to him on overdrive but most of time he leaves my shaking my head he once said there’s never been a player in history of NHL like Matthews lol really. I think key word is think the Leafs are not as bad as this year showed but also not a cup team. Personally Nylander’s attitude bothers me kid definitely has skill but floats around most of the game. Leafs have hard decisions this summer will be interesting for sure. Sorry George I was hoping for Ottawa couldn’t believe how well Andersson played.

    • Well, Obe, when you break it all down, the difference had to be losing both of your top-pairing D, having a third (your second-pairing LD) obviously come back too early from a broken arm, and not having your best 3rd-pairing LD for most of the series.

Can’t think of too many teams that could lose equivalents on their D and still advance. And against a top defensive team that can also score with the best of them …. it just wasn’t going to happen.

I think there have to be a few judici ous moves this summer … but no “gutting”

  10. Definitely were short handed but every game was so close both goalie’s outstanding they should be back next year would you resign Claude Giroux ?

    • I think he has 1 more year as a 3rd/4th-line RW at maybe $1.4 mil.
