St. Louis Blues trade winger Jordan Kyrou to the Washington Capitals (NHL Images).
The Buffalo Sabres trade defenseman Bowen Byram and forward Jordan Greenway to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for the fourth-overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, defenseman Louis Crevier, and a 2026 second-round pick.
The St. Louis Blues trade winger Jordan Kyrou to the Washington Capitals in exchange for forward Connor McMichael, prospect forward Milton Gastrin, and a first-round pick (No. 16) in the 2026 NHL Draft. Kyrou waived his no-trade clause to join the Capitals.
The Ottawa Senators acquire winger William Eklund, forward Kasper Halttunen, and the rights to forward prospect Brandon Svoboda from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for the No. 9 pick in the first round of the 2026 NHL Draft. That pick originally belonged to the Florida Panthers.
The New Jersey Devils traded defenseman Simon Nemec and forward Maxim Tsyplakov to the Calgary Flames for conditional first-round picks in the 2027 and 2028 drafts, a second-round pick in the 2026 draft, and prospect defenseman Etienne Morin. Both conditional picks are top-10 protected.
Out of the three, the Kyrou seems the most interesting for both teams. A lot of trades this week so far using this years 1st rounders thrown about.
3 big trades in the league today following yesterdays blockbuster. Feel like the Ottawa/ SJ trade and the Caps/ Blues trade were solid trades for all 4 teams. Confused the NJ/ Calgary trade in that I thought NJ wanted a young NHL ready top 6 forward instead of the draft choices they got back in the trade for Nemec. Hope the action continues!
the Nemec trade was interesting. I think part of it was to get rid of Tsyplakov’s contract, but also to get 2 1st and a 2nd, for a young player, who hired a new agent and was asking the team for a $9M AAV contract, straight out of his entry level contract. He showed offensive ability but struggled defensively, he hasn’t shown the ability to carry games nor that big deal already, unlike (former) teammate Luke Hughes
Sunny Mehta got ahead of it by getting some draft capital back. Morin was playing in the ECHL so he was just thrown in due to the 50 contract limit
I doubt Armstrong will keep 4 first rd picks probably another move or two. I also think Binnington and Parayko get traded. Regardless the Kyrou trade frees up 8 million in cap space.
Is Armstrong running this draft or is Steen..not sure what the handoff timeline is
Armstong running his last draft. Steen takes over July 1st.
Armstrong, Steen officially takes over in July I think. However I’m sure they are working closely together. The Swedish prospect in the Kyrou trade was probably because of Steen’s influence.
Geez. Just came home from visiting the wife again … and another deal. Staios certainly isn’t letting the grass grow under his feet. Less than 48 hours after peddling Tkachuk he uses their 9th obtained in that trade to obtain speedy LW Eklund, who isn’t afraid of the heavy going … and who happens to be close friends with Zetterlund. He’s also cost-controlled for the next 3 seasons, having just signed a $5.6 mil per extension in San Jose.
He certainly can’t be described as “big” … but apparently he plays that way.
The other two are admittedly long-shot prospects to make the NHL one day, but they do add to the depth in Belleville where they’ll learn the Ottawa system and hopefully progress. The 21 year old Halttunen, a Finn, is a C while Svoboda is a RW, currently with Boston U.
They still have the # 25 pick, but I’d bet that too is involved in another deal
Plus some not bad futures thrown in too…Don’t look at his +/- I know you hold that stat highly but one has to consider the team in his case. Still loads of cap, every trade has left doors wide open and quite entertaining…SJ with 2 top 10 picks…what are they up to?
on, with this unusual and, let’s face it, totally unexpected flurry of trades BEFORE the entry draft (and I don’t think it’s over yet), not only will it have a major impact on how the draft goes, but also on UFA day.
One probable effect on the entry draft is that, in some instances, the deals have altered standard drafting needs, changing who targets D vs wingers/Centers. Some contenders have relinquished high selection spots to solidify immediate roster upgrades while giving re-building (or re-tooling) teams multiple 1st and 2nd rounders, which then gives them the option to either trade up or keep the picks to bolster their prospect pool.
As for UFA Day, the blockbuster deals have freed up millions in cap space for a couple of teams, thereby joining those 6 or 7 who already had hefty cap reserves, and all this financial flexibility means more aggressive pursuit of the top UFAs.
I’m surprised Nemec didn’t get NJ more since none of the first rounders are Calagarys.
As for the SJ trade, Stenberg is going to SJ or they wouldn’t have made the trade. I think Washington got the slightly better deal

Man, I’m really happy that SJ most likely will be grabbing Stenberg! Now, will they use picks #9 and #27 to move up two spots to nail a really good defenceman? Exciting times!
They arent taking Stenberg, at least not from the sounds of Grier’s recent quote about how “6’3” RHD dont grow on trees”. Ill bet if they keep #2, they will grab Reid. Or they can trade with my Blues so they can get Otto’s brother, Ivar! Cmon Grier, trade down.

Why did Black Hawks do this ? Sabres may have another deal in the works
if they can extend Byram then they have a great young defense going forward. They were light on the left side, and Byram fills that in on the top pairing. Hawks are at a time to stop collecting prospects and time to move forward towards a playoff spot, similar to what the Sharks did last season (they almost made it…)

Yes, with 4OA they probably could have picked a possible top pairing D, but they settled for a 2nd pairing player. It’s not like Chicago is going anywhere this year.
Big haul for Sabres. Cleared up over $10 million in cap space. Wonder what Jarmo has next in mind? Could he trade up to #2 now to get Stenberg? Might he entice Stars with a sign and trade for Robertson using #2 and #20 and some moving pieces? Will they use the space now to sign Tuch? The Atlantic division sure is making a lot of noise before the draft.
Not a bough space to sign Tuch. They need to move another player. Good thought though.
Since we’re in silly season, how about a trade of Rob Thomas (not from Matchbox 20) for #4, #45, McLeod, and one of Crevier/Mrtka?
Thomas is not, and never has been available. The Blues would love Mrtka though. What about a 1st (#16), Buchnevich and a sweetener for Mrtka?
GMs will always listen, especially for an overpay.
There is a greater need at center in order to move Thompson to wing. With picks 4 and 20 this year, 16 won’t move the needle. Plus it would have made mosre sense to re-extend Tuck without having to give up Mrtka. Pass.

He’s working on signing another 3rd line player to a five year contract.
Or giving Rasmussen another 3 year extension, he’s 6’6 and plays like he’s 5’6 watch when there is a scrum he’s the first guy to the bench but he’s not the only one a very soft team to play against.
