Hockey Canada invites 42 NHL players to their National Teams orientation camp, a list of the top remaining unrestricted free agents, the Kings re-sign Alex Laferriere, the latest on Leafs winger Nick Robertson, and more in today’s Morning Coffee Headlines.

TSN: Hockey Canada invited 92 players from its’ mens’, womens’, and para hockey teams to attend its National Teams Orientation Camp in preparation for the 2026 Winter Olympics. The camp will be held from Aug. 26-28 in Calgary.

Forty-two NHL players (three goaltenders, 13 defensemen, and 26 forwards) were selected by Team Canada general manager Doug Armstrong and his staff:

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Many of these players were part of Canada’s gold-medal squad in last February’s 4 Nations Face-Off. Most of that 4 Nations group will be selected for the 2026 Winter Olympics team.

DAILY FACEOFF: Forward Jack Roslovic, defenseman Matt Grzelcyk, and winger Max Pacioretty remain among the noteworthy players still available in this summer’s unrestricted free-agent market.

Other notables include winger Victor Olofsson, goaltender James Reimer, winger Luke Kunin, netminder Ilya Samsonov, and center Evgeny Kuznetsov.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Some of these players will be signed to low-cost, one-year contracts before training camp opens in mid-September. The others will get professional tryout offers (PTOs), or face the choice of retirement or continuing their playing careers in Europe.

MAYOR’S MANOR: The Los Angeles Kings signed forward Alex Laferriere to a three-year contract with an average annual value of $4.1 million.

Laferriere, 23, was a restricted free agent after completing his entry-level contract last season. He enjoyed a promising sophomore campaign in 2024-25, netting 19 goals and 42 points in 77 games.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Kings have their full 23-man roster under contract for this season. Management’s focus will shift to signing first-line forward Adrian Kempe to a contract extension. The 28-year-old winger carries a $5.5 million salary-cap hit this season and is UFA-eligible next summer.

Team captain Anze Kopitar is also due to become a UFA next summer, but he intends to finish his career with the Kings.

TORONTO SUN: cited Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reporting there is a $1 million cap between Nick Robertson and the Maple Leafs as they prepare for his arbitration hearing on Aug. 3.

Friedman claims the Robertson camp seeks $2.25 million, while the Maple Leafs are countering with $1.25 million.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Robertson is the last player scheduled for salary arbitration this summer. The others all reached agreements on new contracts before their hearings.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: Former Oilers defenseman and captain Jason Smith was named the new head coach of the WHL’s Edmonton Oil Kings on July 31.

Smith spent 15 seasons in the NHL, eight of those with the Oilers from 1998-99 to 2006-07. His previous head-coaching job was with the WHL’s Kelowna Rockets from 2016 to 2019. He was also an assistant coach with the Philadelphia Flyers’ AHL affiliate in Lehigh Valley.

THE ATHLETIC’s Aaron Portzline reported on July 31 that former NHL player Stefan Matteau has joined the coaching staff of the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters.

The Oilers and Hurricanes take commanding 3-1 leads in their second-round series, Ken Holland is expected to be named the next GM of the Kings, and more in today’s NHL Morning Coffee Headlines.

RECAPPING MONDAY’S PLAYOFF GAMES

NHL.COM: Edmonton Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner made 23 saves to shut out the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0 in Game 4 of their best-of-seven second-round series.

Adam Henrique scored two goals and Evander Kane had a goal and an assist for the Oilers, who hold a 3-1 lead in the series. Adin Hill stopped 29 shots for the Golden Knights.

The Oilers can wrap things up on Wednesday, May 14, in Las Vegas at 9:30 PM ET.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: This was a dominating performance by the Oilers, especially in the fast-paced first period, where Henrique scored his goals as the action was end-to-end for most of that frame. They were physical from the start, generating plenty of traffic around the Vegas net, and played with consistent, determined energy that the Golden Knights couldn’t match.

Another effort like that by the Oilers in Game 5, and they’ll be heading to the Western Conference Final for the third time in four years.

Carolina Hurricanes forwards Sean Walker and Taylor Hall each had a goal and an assist in a 5-2 victory over the Washington Capitals in Game 4 of their second-round series.

Frederik Andersen turned aside 19 shots for the Hurricanes, who’ve taken a 3-1 stranglehold on this series. Jakob Chychrun and Alex Ovechkin scored for the Capitals and Logan Thompson kicked out 32 shots.

The Hurricanes can win this series and advance to the Eastern Conference Final for the second time in three years on Thursday, May 15, in Washington at 7 pm ET

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Washington had a strong start for the second straight game but failed to capitalize. The Hurricanes soon took over, dominating the Capitals over the remainder of the game. Ovechkin scored his first goal of this series on a 5-on-3 power-play, but the Hurricanes’ checkers have otherwise neutralized him.

HEADLINES

MAYOR’S MANOR: The Los Angeles Kings are expected to name Ken Holland as their new general manager this week. The announcement could come as early as Tuesday, May 13.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Holland spent this season as an NHL operations department consultant. He has an impressive resume from his 27 years with the Detroit Red Wings and Edmonton Oilers, including three Stanley Cups with the Wings and building the Oilers into a Cup Finalist last season.

The Kings have been a playoff club for the past four seasons, but were eliminated by the Oilers in the opening round four times. They’ll look to Holland to help them take the next step toward Cup contention.

NHL.COM: Toronto Maple Leafs forward Max Domi was fined $5,000 for boarding Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov during Game 4 of their second-round series on Sunday.

ROTOWIRE: Panthers forward Evan Rodrigues is questionable for Game 5 against the Leafs on Wednesday, May 14. He suffered an undisclosed injury in Game 4.

THE WINNIPEG SUN: The Jets hope to improve their struggling power play for Game 4 of their second-round series with the Dallas Stars. They are 1-for-13 with the man advantage through the first three games. The Stars lead the series two games to one.

DAILY FACEOFF: Top 2026 NHL Draft prospect Gavin McKenna’s historic WHL points streak ended at 54 games. The Medicine Hat Tigers’ forward was held scoreless in a 6-2 loss to the Spokane Chiefs in Game 2 of the WHL Championship Series.

McKenna, 17, finished second among this season’s WHL scorers with 129 points in 56 games. He has 37 points in 16 playoff games.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: McKenna has been compared to Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid and Chicago Blackhawks’ star Connor Bedard. He is already expected to be the first-overall pick in the 2026 draft.

THE HOCKEY NEWS: Former NHL center Stefan Matteau has announced his retirement. The son of former NHL winger Stephane Matteau, Stefan was selected in the first round (29th overall) by the New Jersey Devils in the 2012 draft. He spent eight seasons with the Devils, Montreal Canadiens, Vegas Golden Knights, Columbus Blue Jackets and Colorado Avalanche. Matteau had six goals and five assists for 11 points in 92 games.

BOSTON HOCKEY NOW: Brad Marchand is considered among the candidates to replace retired center Patrice Bergeron as the Bruins’ captain. However, the 35-year-old winger believes the club has plenty of leadership regardless of who wears the captaincy.

“You know we have always done it collectively as a group, so regardless of who wears it, it’s a collective thing,” said Marchand. “Even guys without letters step up”.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Marchand is the longest-serving active member of the Bruins, having been with the club since 2009-10. Charlie McAvoy, David Pastrnak, Brandon Carlo and Hampus Lindholm have also been mentioned as candidates to succeed Bergeron as Bruins captain.

THE HOCKEY NEWS: Florida Panthers general manager Bill Zito provided an update on sidelined defenseman Aaron Ekblad and Brandon Montour. Both players are recovering from offseason shoulder surgeries.

Zito anticipates Ekblad and Montour will be back before the 2024 All-Star break in early February but he didn’t provide more specific timelines. “I think you are safe to say November to January is the range as long as they continue to progress in September and October.”

Of the two, Zito alluded to Montour returning to action before Ekblad.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Panthers will find it challenging to remain a playoff contender this season without their top two defensemen during the opening weeks of the schedule.

SPORTSNET: Vancouver Canucks defenseman Tyler Myers and his family were forced to evacuate their lakefront home in British Columbus last month when embers from the West Kelowna wildfires jump Okanagan Lake.

Myers said the fire jumped close to his house on the east side of Okanagan Lake. He and his family spent a week in Vancouver before they were allowed to return home. “House is all good,” said Myers. “We got back and, you know, a lot of debris and ash everywhere as I’m sure there was around the whole city. But it was scary for sure.”

THE PROVINCE: Speaking of the Canucks, defenseman Tucker Poolman is not expected to attend training camp in Victoria later this month. The 30-year-old blueliner has been suffering from migraines since 2021-22 and played just three games last season. He could be sidelined for the entirety of the upcoming campaign.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Poolman is in the third season of a four-year contract with an average annual value of $2.5 million. He will likely be placed on long-term injury reserve if unable to play this season.

BOSTON HOCKEY NOW: The Bruins signed winger Danton Heinen to a professional tryout offer (PTO).

DAILY FACEOFF: Forward Stefan Matteau is attending Columbus Blue Jackets training camp on a PTO.

Goaltender Jean-Francois Berube has signed a PTO with the Los Angeles Kings.
