NHL Rumor Mill – October 9, 2020

by | Oct 9, 2020 | Rumors | 82 comments

The NHL’s free-agent market opens at noon ET today. Check out the latest speculation on Alex Pietrangelo, Taylor Hall, Torey Krug and many more in today’s rumor mill.

PIETRANGELO

St. Louis Blues defenseman Alex Pietrangelo could head to market today (NHL Images).

TSN: Pierre LeBrun reports St. Louis Blues defenseman Alex Pietrangelo was ready to go to market as of yesterday afternoon. He’s up to visiting with interested clubs that are willing to have him travel. It could take a couple of days until he reaches a decision on his destination and next contract. The Vegas Golden Knights, Florida Panthers and Toronto Maple Leafs could be among the interested parties.

TORONTO SUN: Lance Hornby reports it could take moving a high-profile Leaf or two, such as William Nylander or Frederik Andersen, to free up cap space to sign Pietrangelo. He feels general manager Kyle Dubas has hinted that’s not going to happen, giving Andersen a vote of confidence while staying out of the Matt Murray trade market.

PHILLY.COM: Sam Carchidi expects Pietrangelo will be too costly for the Philadelphia Flyers. He suggests more affordable options like Toronto’s Tyson Barrie, Boston’s Torey Krug or Calgary’s T.J. Brodie.

EKMAN-LARSSON

TSN: Darren Dreger said the Arizona Coyotes might not be able to meet the Friday trade deadline set by defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson. He’ll only waive his no-movement clause for the Boston Bruins or Vancouver Canucks.

SPORTSNET: Chris Johnston and Elliotte Friedman report the Canucks appear the more interested buyer for Ekman-Larsson.

THE ATHLETIC: Thomas Drance and Rick Dhaliwal report the parameters of a deal with the Canucks would include “a draft pick of some magnitude, an inefficient contract from their bottom-six and a prospect.”

NBC SPORTS BOSTON: cites TSN’s Darren Dreger reporting the Bruins don’t like Arizona’s asking price. The Coyotes are believed to prefer the Bruins’ prospects over the Canucks.

HALL

SPORTSNET: Chris Johnston and Elliotte Friedman report there’s some talk Coyotes winger Taylor Hall would consider a reunion with the Edmonton Oilers. It would be difficult to achieve that unless the Oilers shed some salary.

THE DENVER POST: Mike Chambers suggests Hall would be a perfect fit for the Colorado Avalanche’s second line. He’s open to a short-term deal, perhaps a one-year contract that could pave the way for a longer contract in free agency after next season.

THE ATHLETIC: With the Columbus Blue Jackets shedding salary yesterday, Aaron Portzline wonders if they might get into the bidding for Hall. Other options could include Florida’s Mike Hoffman or Evgenii Dadonov or Vancouver’s Tyler Toffoli.

MARKSTROM

THE ATHLETIC: Thomas Drance and Rick Dhaliwal report the Vancouver Canucks remain confident of re-signing Jacob Markstrom despite persistent rumors linking the goaltender to the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers.

TSN: Pierre LeBrun reports the Oilers are among the teams that could be interested in Markstorm if he goes to market today.

SPORTSNET: Chris Johnston and Elliotte Friedman reported the Flames, Detroit Red Wings and Oilers (despite their salary-cap constraints) could pursue Markstrom.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: David Staples doesn’t see how the Oilers could afford Markstrom, who could seek $6 million annually on a long-term deal.

CALGARY SUN: Wes Gilbertson believes Markstrom should be the Flames’ top target in the UFA market. He feels Markstrom could become the high-end goalie they’ve been missing since Miikka Kiprusoff retired.

NEW YORK POST: Larry Brooks listed the Minnesota Wild as a possible destination for Markstrom if he goes to market.

STARTRIBUNE.COM: Sarah McLellan also included Markstrom among possible Wild UFA targets. Other options could include Washington’s Braden Holtby and Chicago Corey Crawford.

FLEURY

TSN: Frank Seravalli reports the Vegas Golden Knights have put trading goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury on the side burner for now. His no-trade clause and $7 million annual average value makes him difficult to move.

HOLTBY

TSN: Pierre LeBrun reports Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby is garnering interest from the Oilers.

NEW YORK POST: Larry Brooks believes the Dallas Stars and Minnesota Wild could be interested in Holtby.

KRUG

SPORTSNET: Chris Johnston and Elliotte Friedman report of increased chatter suggesting the Red Wings could pursue Boston Bruins defenseman Torey Krug. He was raised in a Detroit suburb and seeks long-term security. The Wings have the cap space to make a lucrative offer.

THE DETROIT NEWS: Ted Kulfan reports Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman would like to address his blueline issues with one or two defenseman signings. It remains to be seen if he’ll pursue Krug. Yzerman said he expects to be “relatively conservative” in the free-agent market.

KHUDOBIN

TSN: Goaltender Anton Khudobin is heading to market after talks broke off with the Stars. The Flames could be interested, along with the Canucks if they fail to re-sign Jacob Markstrom or the Golden Knights if they can move Marc-Andre Fleury.

TOFFOLI AND TANEV

THE ATHLETIC: Thomas Drance and Rick Dhaliwal report Canucks winger Tyler Toffoli and defenseman Chris Tanev are heading to market.

NBC SPORTS BAY AREA: Toffoli tops Brian Witt’s list of possible free-agent targets for the San Jose Sharks.

BRODIE AND HAMONIC

TSN: Darren Dreger reports the Flames renewed contract talks with defenseman T.J. Brodie. Dreger also believes Flames blueliner Travis Hamonic would sign with his hometown Winnipeg Jets but there’s not a lot of interest at the moment. The Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators and Oilers could be among Hamonic’s suitors.

BARRIE

SPORTSNET: Chris Johnston and Elliotte Friedman reported the Oilers could have an interest in Maple Leafs defenseman Tyson Barrie as a short-term replacement for sidelined blueliner Oscar Klefbom.

GREISS

TSN: Pierre LeBrun believes New York Islanders goalie Thomas Greiss could draw interest from the Canucks if they fail to re-sign Markstrom or Vegas if they trade Fleury.

NEW YORK POST: Larry Brooks suggested Greiss or Cam Talbot could be a fit with the New Jersey Devils.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The opening hours of the free-agent period tend to be very busy with the best available players being quickly signed. However, it will be interesting to see how the flattened salary cap affects the market and the pace of the signings.

  1. Re “ The opening hours of the free-agent period tend to be very busy with the best available players being quickly signed.”

I posted re this on morning coffee

This statement was definitely true in the past as there was an approved “courtship” /negotiation period (just before UFA day) to hammer out potential deals to be signed at noon on 1/7 (in the past)

Certainly buyouts like Hank are free to discuss … but reg UFAs can’t have any convos before the UFA period formally opens… that would be tampering… so doesn’t announcements of signed UFAs (to a new team) just minutes after UFA opens, infer that tampering was in fact going on??

Let’s say Hall signing with Columbus is announced at 12:30…. 30 minutes to negotiate, hammer out fine details, signed by both sides and faxed/registered with NHL in 30 mins??

*Not saying Hall will be going to Clb… was just using an example of a prominent UFA and a team that has recently created bucket o’ space

    • @ PENGY

      Taylor Hall

If Iam Taylor hall …and I look at the Nashville roster and look to play with Duchene and Johansen as my 2 centres double shifting and on power play with them and Jossi ..if it were me Iam going Nashville as opposed to the Jackets or Habs as the rumors say…. IMO

      Preds power play unit …

      Duchene – Johansen – Hall
      Jossi – Ellis

hall would and should put up amazing numbers in this line up !!

      IMO

      • @ GOERGE O

Dorion is doing a masterful job …I wasn’t a big fan on his trade deal of Karlsson to get this rebuild going ..but he has definitely earned my respect over the past year and a half ….who cares they didn’t get Lafrienier , they have done an amazing job

…this is Tkachucks team and id rather have him any day …LOVE THE KIDS STYLE OF PLAY …OG !

What a past 3 days it has been for the Sens …drafting amazing players ..to an all ready amazing talent pool ..getting Matt Murray for a bag of pucks and now putting a nice bow on the day with Gudbranson to calm things down in front of Murray so there is no BULLSH?? ..in the way of teams trying to take advantage of a young roster and a soft D …great move by Dorion to help out Murray !

        BRILLIANT DORION …BRILLIANT !

        Dubas …pay attention….

        Cheers

    • “Let’s say Hall signing with Columbus is announced at 12:30…. 30 minutes to negotiate, hammer out fine details, signed by both sides and faxed/registered with NHL in 30 mins??”

Would beat the Hell out of Chara’s signing of a five-year deal worth $37.5 million dollars complete with no-trade clause literally within seconds of the opening of free agency in 2006.

      • Ya … I had forgot about that

Had they traded his rights for a pick?

      • Nope. That idiot Muckler let him walk after declaring that Redden was “the priority.”

      • Chara was the best UFA signing in the history of the NHL, so far.
There has to be some type of communications going on.
Say EDM was interested, Kassian played with Hall in Jr and I am guessing they stay in touch.
Hey Zach do you think Taylor would come back and play in Edmonton?
I dunno, how much you paying?
        Off you go.

      • Ray

I’m on board with you there

There is certainly no telepathic negotiations happening last night and this morning

        George

In retrospect … completely blown..l Redden over big Z… but at the time there certainly was the massive disparity that we subsequently came to know

Completely a “maniacal” move reviewed after probably two years, but at the time it was done… just maybe a “head scratcher“

There were some at the time that thought it was a tough choice that could have gone either way

Ahhh but a crystal ball shall I wish for

      • While I’m not a Muckler fan either, most of the -Redden is our guy- story was cover up for the real reason Big Z left. The sign and flip of his countryman Hossa was a huge slap in the face. Marian signed that deal under the impression he was taking a hometown discount to stay. Chara wasn’t even open to speaking to the Sens after that.

      • Good point Dark G. I remember my reaction after hearing of the Hossa move within hours of his signing – W T F? Muckler had the perfect name because he was a classic muck up.

And Kal El – since our positions in here almost always reflect those of the average fan – one way or another – the reaction within my group of friends and associate was “is he an idiot?” Redden over Chara? Not – even – close at the time.

    • Hi Lyle

Any word on what the Jets sent the Knights for Stastny acquisition ??

      Thx

      • A fourth and Carl Dahlstrom.

        Vegas easily wins this trade.

        Total desperation by Chevy.

      • Thx Caper

        …Cheers

      • @Casper,
Realy? A 4th round pick and a 25 year old d-man who only played 15 games last season is better than Stastny?
IMO the Jets got Stastny for pretty much nothing.

      • Agree Kejvam. It’s not as if UFAs are clamoring for a chance to move to Winnipeg – which goes a long way to explain why they have never been that active on UFA Day since coming to Winnipeg 9 years ago. And right now, anyway, there isn’t a better second line C among the UFAs than Stastny who also has the benefit of knowing the system and the players he’ll be with right off the bat.

  2. Good morning Lyle

Love the bold outline of each players name …then the remarks …Mmmmm…LOL

    PETRO –

    As a Leaf fan

..Iam passing on Petro and $9 million plus ..and would rather save some money for elsewhere and my deal would be

..Nylander and Lilijergen to the Sabres for Risto & 2 / 2nd round picks in 2021 2022.

    reasoning..

Risto for Nylander straight up leafs get size a short contract and a right D man save about $1.5 million on Nylander and will get a solid D man they can look to resign on an extension…for roughly the same money and fill the need !

Moving Lilijergen to play with Dahlin as they both grew up playing in Swedens system and would pair well together…Lilijergen was a 1st rounder hence my 2 picks in separate years …

Big thing here is Leafs get Cap room fill the need and control assets moving forward and have a window of 2 years to make more decisions as opposed to getting boxed in with an older player and a NMC

With the savings of Nylander $1.5 million
I go out and get Bogosian on a 2 year deal with that money and make a play like the Sens did with Gudbranson for net coverage !

This gives Leafs …2 Solid BIG size D men who are familiar with each other and then add in Muzzin for 3 lines of SOLID D !

To fill Nylanders position Id like to sign Hoffman @ $4.75 AAV for 5 years plus bonus structure…..and move out Johnson to make room for that money and then add in
Nic Roberston and his entry level deal to fill in for Johnson …the money all works

More to come on the rest not just a leafs post ..LOL …thx …take care

    • D pairings

      Rielly – Muzzzin

      Risto – Sandin

      Bogosian – Dermott

      Holl

Eichel needs a skating Winger hence Nylander deal for Risto sorry meant to say that.

      …Cheers

    • Hi Kal El

Sorry, posted below before I read your post

I would much rather move WW for Ekblad (far superior to Risto)

If it is WW & Liljgren going to Sabres..the return should be substantially more than Risto and two 2nds

Risto is certainly big … but has only two years left, and is a more of a “fair” DMan to me, than a “top notch” RHD that I think they need

I’d love to see Leafs get Ekblad

      • Hi Pengy

Ekblad comes with serious issues and injuries and many unknowns and has no physical game like Risto does …he is a Rielly 2.0 …and not of the multiple uses the Leafs actually need on the D side of the puck ..I M H O.

Risto is a shut down D man and can play in both power play units ..as he does posses quality hands as well.

As far as I hear and read he is not available and Risto will be IMO

    • Ristoleinen for Nylander and Liljgren is an awful trade.
Nylander is on a good value contract for a player coming off a 31G season. Ristoleinen has been struggling for the past couple seasons in BUF. The Leafs would be better off keeping Nylander and signing Benning as a UFA for about $2M a year.

If you want to trade Nylander these are the players you’d want to consider…STL for Parayko, CAR for Pesce +, or FLA for Ekblad.

The Leafs have 3 RHD prospects including Liljgren. They need to keep Liljgren, he’s only 21. He may not be the next Hedman but he could be a Strallman type D.

The players to move out are Johnsson and Kerfoot. That is $6.9M in cap space. Add to that and they’ve got about $12M in cap space with two RFA to sign,

Dermott and Mikhayev should be around $1.5M a year on a 2 year deal.

The Leafs have lots of LHD and very little RHD. They need to deal 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 this depth to shore up their RHD.

      How about this

      To ANA: Dermott, Johnsson
      To TOR: Manson, Kesler

TOR would put Kesler on LTIR and use his cap savings to sign other FA to cover for trading Johnsson

      • hi Daryl

..I have no issues with Manson ..for sure for a shut down roll only!

      • I agree, I like Risto’s brusing style but there are deficiencies in his defensive play. Nylander is a decent contract for his production. The issue is the top 3 and their hefty pay but you can’t exactly move AM, JT or MM
At some point a decision needs to be made on those three, we can’t see Reilly going into UFA

      • Most of what Daryl said makes sense except: Benning is a zero and the ANA trade is totally unrealistic as they are not taking LD as they r loaded there. You would have to substitute Holl and Liligren to be realistic. Ducks likely still say no when they can have Gibson in net with fowler lindholm manson and barrie as a top 4.

  3. Hamonic wants to be close to home. As a result I think he takes less to do so and does not sign in the eastern time zone.
Nashville will do something today Poile has never bought out players prior to Turris.
Pietrangelo will take a few days.

I think you will see a lot of $5m deals.

    • You could be right on the $54M deals SilverSeven.
I think the top guys – Petro, Hall, Markstrom maybe a couple others – get their $$.
      The others get squeezed.
Teams cleared some space over the last few days.
Some to simply save the $$, other to pursue UFA’s.
I don’t remember as many buyouts for players with as much term before. Nor have we had as many RFA’s not get qualified.
So save $$ or to spend more?

There are teams that are still trying to win, and some that are still profitable based only on TV deals. Some have rich owners that the losses aren’t that big in the grand scheme of things.
      Others are hurting.

Maybe Bergevin will prove to be brilliant for betting on Anderson and taking advantage of a suppressed market.

Maybe guys like Hall take a 1 year deal in Boston to go for it and chases the $$ next off season. He has made over $44M in his career already so not as big a gamble as it might be for others.

Who knows, I definitely don’t. Should be interesting.

      • I mean $5M deals

  4. Re “ Lance Hornby reports it could take moving a high-profile Leaf or two, such as William Nylander ”

WW for Ekblad please and thank you

    • “Lance Hornby reports it could take moving a high-profile Leaf or two, such as William Nylander or Frederik Andersen, to free up cap space to sign Pietrangelo. ”

I think we can safely file that under “No s*&t Sherlock?”

Unless Hornsby knows of another way that escapes everyone else.

      • The advantage of being an “insider”.

        lmao

      • Ron, now all Hornsby has to do is pinpoint the teams that could then clear the same amount of cap space – and where THAT would go – in order to bring in a Nylander’s almost $7 mil per and be prepared to deal with Andersen’s pending free-agency coming off $5 mil per. And before someone suggests the latter would only be seen as a 1-year stop-gap by the team that trades for him – what moron GM would give up any sort of asset for that when there are close to 40 goalies on the market?

That’s why I skim over 99% of what these so-called “journalists” toss around – never mind similar off-the-wall proposals in these pages – as if there was nothing to it but do it.

      • LMAO – could be bang on.

    • Pengy, Florida needs to fix defense. Can’t see them trading their best. Rumors this morning that Columbus is shopping Savard. They need to sign Dubois, and I think they’ll target Hall today.

      • Hi Slick

With you in your evaluation… wishful thinking on my part

Panthers are trying to cut costs … and with WW only owed about a cash AAV of ~$5M per… the WW for Ekblad would work towards that

        Again wishful thinking

Yep… Jarmo has a lot of space to work with; and even more with Dubinsky LTIR

I expect him to be talking to Hall’s camp

      • Pengy. I think Florida letting Hofman and Dadinov walk is their cost cutting moves. Should see a couple of their prospects move into lineup

      • Probably Slick62, although as matters now stand they are committed to 13 with just over $19 mil to sign 10, and although they still have 4 NHL roster RFAs to re-sign, when that’s settled they should still have a good chunk left over, so it wouldn’t be a lack of cap that prevents them from re-upping either Hoffman or Dadonov (for sure they won’t even think of retaining both).

If they do fill with ELCs, that’s a clear sign they intend to function well below the flat cap limit – which make you wonder how that will sit with veteran coach Quenneville?

    • Pengy—as i mentioned above I think you’re right on with that trade. Maybe TOR would have to add something to the deal or there would be more pieces involved but it’s not a bad start.

Nylander and Barkov would be a deadly duo.

Is STL signs Pietrangelo do you think Nylander could pry Parayko from STL?

      • Daryl

WW for CP…. would be my early and lovingly received a Christmas present … please gedderdone

      • @ daryl & pengy …

You guys need to evaluate the serious injuries Ekblad has had over the years …he is not worth Nylander on his own due to these unknowns

Nothing aganst teh player …he is a good soldi D man for puck posession and playmaking BUT THAT IS IT !!

that’s not what the Leafs need in a well rounded D man who will shy away from the play in the coming years …guys !

        IMO !

      • Pengy as a fellow Leafs fan I’d loe nothing more than WW for CP but I think we both know with a massive amount of certainty that there is literally zero chance of that happening.

    • That is a fair trade because of actual salary but stop dreaming dubas is not trsding a core 4. If he did it would be better to move marner but FLA would never take that cap hit.

    • This is the first I have heard about Ekblad. Why would Florida trade him? Isn’t Florida looking to fix their defence and not tear it apart by trading their best d-man. Florida doesn’t have a cap issue as they have $19 million to play with. Doesn’t make sense to me.

    • Nylanders is “high profile”?

The only thing “high” about Nylander is his salary and the baked out fool that signed him…

you are high….. way too high…..lol

  5. To recap, every team is somehow going to make a trade to clear cap space, most teams have interest in signing the top free agents if they can clear cap space, and most teams have interest in trading for top players available on the trade market….once they clear cap space.

    • Exactly!

There simply is not enough cap-space to go around. Add to that the “internal cap” that many teams are reportedly implementing and there’s no way every UFA has a job when the season begins.

I think there will be some NHL talent playing in other leagues then signing pro-rated contracts with NHL contenders around the TDL. Going to be an interesting year for sure.

  6. I think Barrie would be a decent replacement for Klefbom if they can get him signed at $4million AAV or less.
Holby would be a good story if he signs with the Oilers. Holby, who grew up in the border city of Lloydminster 2 and a half hours east of Edmonton, grew up as an Oilers fan. I think he would be a better fit than Markstom. He would be cheaper and he would also be able to keep Koskinen’s games played around 50.

    • I dunno about Barrie KevJam. Depends what he wants.
Agree Markstrom is a pipe dream for the Oil. They will get a goalie, there are plenty.
      They could use a 3C.
Koivu is being talked about, even with his lack of foot speed. A leader plus a mentor for JP. They were discussing on 1260 this AM.
They have internal options for other positions, D and wing.
What they “have” to add from outside is 3C and a tender. Plenty of tenders out there. Focus on 3C first.
Sounded like a good plan to me.

      • Last season the Oilers struggled more in the games that Klefbom missed then they did in the games McDavid missed. So if Klefbom is going to be out for any length of time, plus missing training camp, the Oilers are going to need a proven d-man who can take some of the slack from missing Klefbom. Plus the Oilers are already missing Benning because of the flat cap.
I do agree that a 3rd line centre and a goalie are are also needed, and Koivu would be a great add.

      • KevJam, just heard on the radio that the Oil are going to go hard after Markstrom.
No idea what that means in $$ but the rumor is max term.
Not sure how they pull that off without trading Koskinen?
        Agree on Klefbom. Huge problem.
The other problem is they don’t know yet how long he will be out, and they don’t know when the season will start. So how do you make a decision until you know the answers to those questions?
Not a great spot to be in for Holland. I am guessing, but doesn’t he need to wait until he knows?

      • Yeah, I heard that too about Markstrom. Not sure I like that. I would suspect that Holland may have a deal in place if they sign Markstom. Or maybe he is going with Markstom and Koskinen this season and banking on Seattle taking Koskinen in the expansion draft. Not sure how he will get this done.

  7. Kal El—yes Ekblad has had concussions. If I recall didn’t Nylander suffer a concussion at the WJC several years ago?

Plenty of players have had concussions and had successful careeers afterwards…Bergeron and Crosby cone to mind.

My point is that Ristoleinen isn’t the D to target if giving up a player like Nylander. He has a higher value now and a higher ceiling. The two second round picks aren’t going to help the Leafs for years and they need help NOW.

If the Leafs are to dangle Nylander for a trade they need to target a high end D-man. Ristoleinen for Johnsson would be a better trade value for both teams.

    • @ daryl

…needs and wants are fair value all have to come into any equation…Leafs need a BIG strong D that can play all aspects of the game ..Risto does that ..at $5.5 million on controlled contract !

I would not touch Ekblad with a 10 foot pole..way to many serious issues IMO ..for $7.5 million and his stats and very little physical play !

he is a Rielly 2.0 but for more money and maybe a downgrade!

You are not going to conn the Sabres to give up Risto for Johnson ..IMO ..they need a winger to play with Eichel ..it also save the Leafs $1.5 million in cap as opposed to getting Ekblad for %1.5 million more than Nylander …its apples and oranges ! NOT GOOD ..

there is a deal and need by both teams here for position Leaf and Sabres ..as well as money issues ..makes the….. MOST SENSE… IMO!

dead horse ..LOL ..needs and wants ..along with money make this more a deal both can swallow !

      Cheers

      • STASTNY – Laine – Ehlers

Bringing back Stastny really puts a burden on the jets to try and fill out a better D CORE … is this a sign that Lanie is on the move …or is Ehlers teh odd man out !
Jets need to do something as they have only 5 million left and a very weak D core …even if they get Hamonic at a low cost they still need something else !

Running out of runway and money $$$

        JANKOWSKI

Would be nice if the Leafs would pick up Jankokwsi from the Flames for the 4th line centre position ASAP !!

        BOESER & Toffoli

Id move out Boeser …and keep Toffoli ..

Toffoli has the same skill sets as Boeser ..and doesn’t get injured and plays more man games …which in return will give you more production over an entire season..

NUCKS should capitalize on Boeser and sign Toffoli instead…. IMO !

      • @ Kal El…ok, let’s agree to disagree. Nylander has more value as an offensive weapon than Ristoleinen does as a defenceman. Ristoleinen is a career -145…how good is he defensively?

Offense is usually paid at a premium.

Look at it this way…if salary cap wasn’t an issue would the Leafs make this trade? Let’s not forget that while Nylander has a $6.9M cap hit 45% of his cash salary has been paid already.

I just read that the Leafs are listening on Nylander…we shall see where that leads.

      • @ Daryl …agree to disagree …not a problem ..Cheers

By sending Nylander and his money out the door to Buffalo for Risto saves you $1.5 million ..and you fill a BIG hole …while Nylander has put up some pints he scores around the net ..his possession numbers are wayyyy over inflated because he is given all the offensive zone break outs across the neutral zone…and makes his way into the offensive zone on power plays /..BUT DIOES NOTHING WITH THE PUCK THERE AFTER …he can be upgraded with the savings for a more ROBST player in a cycle game who causes turnover to compensate for the rushes …

I like this deal personally for all those reasons …but more so it gives the Leafs 3 lines of D with size …and skill.

Nylander is one dimensional player and can be replaced !

need to fill that big hole on the back end and save money doing it !

  8. Couple of Bruins rumors ….. they might look into Hoffman if Fla part ways ….. thinking about signing K Miller on a 1 year if he’s finally healthy still need some size on the bottom 6 and probably add another Dman…. $$$ is very tight with the Bruins ownership has lost a ton of $$$ because of pandemic

    • Sounds realistic Joe.
Jeremy Jacobs has lost $1.7B according to Forbes.
As a % it is almost 40% of his net worth.
It’s not like his businesses have stopped bleeding either.
Not a guy known for being loose with his cash.

      • He’s definitely lost a lot of money, but at the end of the day he is still worth around $2.5 billion and his businesses will rebound.

What difference, really, would spending say $75M on payroll this year versus spending to the cap be for Jacobs? I’m not saying he will spend it, as he does have a history of being a tightwad.

I work in aviation, and while I’ve been fortunate to keep my job (so far), I’ve seen way too many friends and colleagues cleaning out their desks in the last few months to feel sorry for billionaires.

      • He can definitely afford DM, just saying it he might not.
I have no idea what BOS will do with a year or 2 of a window to contend.
Need an LD and 2nd line scoring winger.
Should be able to get DeBrusk on a bridge, so they have a little bit of $$ to play with.

    • That sounds like a typical Don Sweeney move.
Resign an over 30 defenseman with multiple knee surgeries forcing him to miss an entire year

      Its called Bruins!

  9. Its no there’ll be bluebirds over the white cliffs of dover by the late great Vera Lynn, but i like it!

    • WOW! A reference to Vera Lynn?

Apparently you and I share a fondness for the old-time music, Wendel. My “hobby’ since retiring has been gathering – now in a special hard-drive in mp.3 format – a history of the development of popular music right up to 1979 (I’ve told my sons if they want to start adding 80s and up – fill their boots) of every song that made the various U.S. singles charts since 1920 – Pop, Blues/R&B, Country, Easy Listening (at last estimate I have over 35,000 songs).

  10. not a huge vote of confidence for Mete in Montreal , 1 yr .735 deal ….a couple of years ago he was touted as a big part of the rebuild. MB figured out that was a misguided dream.

  11. Bob McKenzie has tweeted that the Oilers are planning on offering Markstrom max term. Don’t know if I like this.

    • Me neither KevJam, depends if they can move out Koskinen or some other $$.
Koskinen is OK, but overpaid IMO and plenty of tenders out there. Would you trade for him and the contract?
      Maybe they buy out Neal?

  12. Bergevin waaaaaaaaay overpaid Anderson.

    7 years?!?!

    Total Benning move, lol.

    • @ Ron Jull

Neither here nor there on Anderson when your Jeff Molson …$$$$$$ !!

Money is not an issue when he goes on LTIR and frees up a roster spot with a serious injury!

Worth a shot for nothing but money !

    • Wayne Simmonds a leaf $1.5 million…neither here nor there for me ..hope he’s healthy!

This is where the ( TERRIBLE SIGNING )
of the SMALL and USELESS Denis Malgin and his money comes into play ..eating away at the cap …what a joke of a signing that was…. just a joke!

That money could have gone towards Athanasiau or Jankownski !!

      Just terrible !!

      • Is that a return to pre-Shanaplan Days when they commonly tried adding old crocks in the hope of capturing past glories (Owen Nolan and the second coming of Dougie jump to mind – can still see Gilmour in my mind’s eye crawling off the ice on all fours in what, his first game back?).

Now they’ll ice a 4th line with Simmonds AND Spezza? Wow.

  13. Idea of the day

    to CMB: Andersen & Nylander

to TML: Bjorkstrand, Savard & Korpisalo

What are the Pro’s? I know the Con’s already 🙂

    • You never ever trade an elite scoring forward for a defensive defenceman or a goalie.

The leafs should offer Johnsson and a throw in for korpisalo though.

      • I was thinking bc Bjorkstrand has good offensive numbers and pretty good on the defensive side of the game. Savard pair with Reilly will help him too by allowing him to run & gun more. Put the pressure up ice even more. IMO.

Plus Muzzin & Savard on the PK would be a dramatic upgrade over what they had.

Upgrades CMB for what they are looking to do and for TML upgrades them in certain areas (defensive side of the game) they NEEDED to improve and cap space to do more tweeking.

      • TURRIS

WHY IN THE WORLD …did Holand sign Turris with RNH Mc David and Draistil as Centres ..Mc D and Draisatil don’t play together all the time ..they did not need a 3rd or 4th line Centre for that amount of money !!

        HOLTBY – NUCKS

LOVED this signing by Benning ..if you are a NUCKS fan you should be over the moon you have a Holtby to bring along Thatcher Demko as he is your legit future and saved money doing it ..GREAT JOB by Benning !!!

        He always surprises !! …good job ..

Cant wait to see what Markstrom is going to get and see what the Nucks saved to keep the core together !

      • Wendel— that’s what I’ve been saying all along.

Nylander is not on a bad contract. 31G last year…24 years old. There’s a certain injury prone LW looking for more money with a long injury history and one 39G season under his belt…

        If Nylander can’t garner a good #2-4 D-man you don’t trade him.

There are options available on the FA market and better options in trades

Johnsson for Korpisalo is a good deal.

Then Andersen and Kerfoot to CAR for Pesce Foegele

      • Elite?

        hahahaha

        yerrrrr funny

  14. @ Daryl

Would love if they could pick up Foegele

would have to blow them away on that one I think
    LOVE this player though..

  15. Nothing Brewin for the Bruins!

Frightened and inept GM Don Sweeney is out golfing while others are making deals.

Donnie cant GM with the big boys

    • Your kind of like the talking Barbie commercials Tony.
Pull the string and it says the same thing over and over and over and over and over….

  16. Leafs sign TJ Brodie from CGY…

That’s one spot taken at RD…to play alongside Reilly I suppose.

Who is next at RD to play with Muzzin? I thought the Leafs would take a shot at Benning ?

Rumours that they’re looking at Weegar from FLA?
Apparently he was on a $1.6M contract and is projecting at a $3.8M salary on a multi year deal? This has a certain familiarity to it…Jeff Finger comes to mind…

    Reilly- Brodie
    Muzzin- Holl
    Dermott- Lehtonen

Looks a little thin after #3D…

  17. Boston will sign both Alex and Hall , Taylor will sign a one year deal than will be extended next year when Krech and Rask are off the books. Hey sounds good doesn’t it Bruin fans.
