To me, not only did Sakic do a great job of “minding the gap” between the older players and giving the younger ones time to mature and be completely ready to join and be effective, he did it for guys that can help them win right now. The Avs can’t keep the guys they got in trades forever unless they’re willing to accept lower salary to play with a contender so the younger guys get time to properly develop while the rentals get a chance to win. This is really good cap and asset management by Sakic and I fully expect them to be at the top the mix for the Cup for the foreseeable future.
